Process for the production of collector electrodes.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing the plates or electrodes of collectors which have, to a remarkable extent, the appreciable properties of a large capacity per unit weight, combined with cohesion of effective mass and mechanical resistance.
The present process eliminates the difficulty previously encountered in using lead sulfate to make such plates or electrodes and, as a result, enables lead sulfate alone to be used as the source of the effective composition.
The present procedure is as follows:
The lead sulphate is converted into a thick state by adding ammonia solution and brought into the desired shape before the dough is dried. However, the lead sulphate can also be converted into a thick state by adding water, brought into the appropriate shape and exposed to the action of ammonia gas before it is completely dried or immersed in a concentrated ammonia bath for about a quarter of an hour. The ammonia causes the dough to become a hard mass after drying.
The plates or masses of lead sulphate are then immersed in a forming bath, which consists of a saturated solution of ammonium sulphate and a sufficient amount of ammonia, for example 50%, to keep the bath in an alkaline state. In this bath, the lead sulphate is in Lead sponge covered in the usual way with dummy plates by the passage of an electric current.During this operation the bath must be in an alkaline state

will.
Those of plates produced in this way which are to be used as positive are converted into Ilyperoxide plates in the usual way. In order to increase the porosity of the mass even further, a certain amount of ammonium sulfate is added to the lead sulfate before it is converted into a paste. The ratio is up to 10 percent by weight for positive plates and 5 to 30 percent by weight for negative plates.
The doughy mass is combined with a grid or other conductive support before it hardens. Instead of a carrier of the usual type, however, a conductive wire or frame can also be embedded in the mass before it has hardened. Since the effective mass obtained by the present process is coherent and self-supporting, the attachment is some mechanical support
