Process and bath for chemical nickel plating of solid non-metallic surfaces
The invention relates to a method and a bath for electroless nickel plating of solid non-metallic surfaces, in particular plastic materials.
From the USA patents No. 2, 690, 401 and No. 2, 690, 402 it is known that processes for electroless nickel plating, in which the object to be coated with nickel is immersed in a bath at 990 ° C., the nickel plating and contains hypophosphite ions as well as various additives, can be used for materials which do not catalyze the reduction of the nickel salts by the hypophosphite ions due to a previous treatment of the surface of the object in order to deposit particles of metallic palladium thereon.
The most common type of treatment is to immerse the object in a solution of the palladium salt and then in a reducing solution that reduces the salt to metallic palladium.
It has been found that the results of this process can be improved to a considerable extent if an additional step is included in the overall sequence of this process, which is hereinafter referred to as "initiation and consists in the surface covered with seeds of metallic palladium in one to treat chemical nickel plating solution, which has a very special composition, before carrying out the actual chemical nickel plating in a conventional bath.
The initiating bath according to the invention has the following composition:
EMI1.1

<tb> Nickel ions <SEP> 0, <SEP> 07-0, <SEP> 10 <SEP> Mol / l <SEP>
<tb> Ratio <SEP> Niokelionen / Hypophosphitionen <SEP> 0, <SEP> 45-0, <SEP> 55 <SEP>

although its rate of deposition increases with temperature, it must be used at a temperature between 20 and 300 C. Of. Similarly, although the rate of deposition increases with the pg, one must work at a pH of less than 6.0, preferably at a pH of about 5.8.
Under these conditions, the rate of nickel plating provided by this bath is of the order of 1 micron / hour. The initiation time is practically 10 to 30 minutes.
After this initiation, the object is subjected to the action of a conventional bath for chemical nickel plating.
The advantages of this prior initiation are the elimination of the "induction time" of the actual nickel plating; H. the time interval before nickel is deposited on the palladium nuclei, and the substantial increase in the adhesion of the nickel layer.
A special embodiment of such an initiating bath is the following:
EMI1.3
<tb>
<tb> Ingredients <SEP> mol / l <SEP> g / l
<tb> Nickel hypophosphite <SEP> 0, <SEP> 09 <SEP> 26, <SEP> 7 <SEP>
<tb> Orthoboric acid <SEP> 0, <SEP> 02 <SEP> 1, <SEP> 2 <SEP>
<tb> Ammonium sulfate <SEP> 0, <SEP> 02 <SEP> 2, <SEP> 64 <SEP>
<tb> Sodium Acetate <SEP> 0, <SEP> 06 <SEP> 4, <SEP> 92 <SEP>
<tb>
The pH of this initiating bath for nickel plating is regulated before use so that it is between 5.5 and 6.0, this setting being made with sulfuric acid or soda, as the case may be. This initiation bath for nickel plating gives a deposition rate of 1 micron / hour.
A plate made of plastic material which has been activated by the known method with palladium chloride is immersed in this bath and the initiation is carried out with the aid of this bath at room temperature (210 ° C.) for 10 to 20 minutes. It is important to rinse the activated plate carefully before this initiation, for about 15 minutes, otherwise the initiation bath could decompose.
After initiation, the plate is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
water, then placed in a pickling bath of 100% sulfuric acid for about 30 seconds, whereupon it is rinsed again as before.
The plate is then subjected to electroless nickel plating in a nickel plating bath maintained at a temperature of about 93 to 990 ° C for the time required
EMI2.1
To obtain starch, 4 minutes is generally sufficient and this electroless nickel plating bath has a nickel plating rate of about 22.5 to 25 microns / hour.
The most suitable chemical nickel plating bath consists of an aqueous solution of the following composition.
EMI2.2
<tb>
<tb>
Nickel sulfate <SEP> 0, <SEP> 09 <SEP> mol / l <SEP>
<tb> Sodium hypophosphite <SEP> 0, <SEP> 225 <SEP> "<SEP>
<tb> Malic acid <SEP> zo
<tb> Sodium succinate <SEP> 0, <SEP> 06 <SEP> "<SEP>
<tb>
Before using the bath, the pH of the bath must be set between about 5.8 and 6.0, using either sulfuric acid or soda.
Another bath for electroless nickel plating forms an aqueous solution of approximately the following composition:
EMI2.3
<tb>
<tb> Nickel sulfate <SEP> 0, <SEP> 07 <SEP> Mol / l <SEP>
<tb> sodium hypophosphite <SEP> zo
<tb> Lactic acid <SEP> 0, <SEP> 30 <SEP>
<tb> (propionic acid <SEP> 0, <SEP> 03 <SEP> n <SEP>
<tb>
Before using the bath, the pil of this bath must be set between about 4.5 and 4.7, using either sulfuric acid or soda.
Although the two baths given for electroless nickel plating are completely satisfactory for the execution of electroless nickel plating on appropriately prepared surfaces of the plate, the first-described composition on the basis of malic and succinic acid is to be preferred, namely because the quality of the adhesion of nickel is significantly improved if you use this bath.
The process described for chemical nickel plating of the surfaces of non-metallic bodies is the subject of earlier patents owned by the inventor.
After the last step of the chemical nickel plating mentioned above, the plate is placed in an oven and left there at about 1620 C for about 30 minutes so that it is completely dry and degassed.
It can then be subjected to a further galvanic treatment, for which the nickel deposit provides a particularly advantageous support. However, this application is only a special one and the nickel plating process alone could be the final stage of a nickel deposition.
EMI2.4
Are made of material, it forms at the same time an intermediate stage in the plating or decorating with copper and other metals, which can be deposited by galvanic means on objects that are essentially made of non-conductive materials.
Although the invention has been described on the basis of what appears to be the best embodiment at present, various modifications can be made here without departing from the scope of the invention.
