handelt.Process for applying galvanic metal coatings on chrome and
Chromium alloys It is known that the production of metal coatings on chromium
and chromium alloys presents great difficulties. For electroplating of chromium-containing
Metal alloys such as stainless steel have already been proposed
has been used to pickle out the chromium from the surface of the alloy. This method
but is practically unusable because of its inconvenience and in its results
unsatisfactory. Furthermore, it contains more chromium for the purpose of electroplating
Alloys have been proposed, the chromium-containing surface to be electroplated
with one produced in a molten way and then mechanically post-processed
Intermediate layer, for example made of tin, to be provided and the galvanic deposit
to effect over this tin layer. Although this procedure gives good results,
but also requires a relatively large amount of work and is therefore expensive. Even bigger
are inherently the difficulties when it is not a question of the production of metal coatings
on alloys containing chromium, but on pure chromium, for example on chromium deposits,
acts.
The subject of the present 'invention is now a simple'
Process by which it succeeds; not only on chromium-containing alloys, but
also on pure chrome, such as chrome deposits, firmly adhering galvanic metal coatings
to produce whose adhesion is sufficient to, for example, easily polished
will.
galvanischen Bades aufzubringen.According to the invention, the surface to be provided with the coating
of chromium or chromium-containing alloys during the application of the coating
exposed to acidic agents; taking abnormally acidic baths with a pH
below 2.5 can be applied. Adhere when using such an abnormally acidic bath
the galvanic deposits, as numerous tests have shown,
completely solid on the surface made of chrome or chrome-containing alloy. With the
Process according to the invention can firmly adhere metal coatings, such as nickel, tin,
Zinc, cadmium and the like coatings. One would get the same coatings
Made with a less acidic bath, the coatings would peel off easily.
Another aspect of the invention is the abnormally acidic baths
with a pH value below 2.5 only apply for a short time until a
thin deposit on the surface of chromium or chromium-containing alloys
has formed galvanically, and then another precipitate of the same or
another metal by means of a common, weaker acidic or alkaline one
to apply galvanic bath.
The effect achieved according to the invention can probably be explained by the fact that the chromium, because of its great passivity, does not allow the deposits applied in the usual way to adhere, but that the passivity of the chromium is overcome by the use of abnormally acidic baths during electroplating, or that the chromium is activated by the high excess of acid in such a way that the deposited metal coatings adhere firmly. For example, a bath can be used which contains about 1 g of nickel sulfate, 30 g of sodium sulfate, 20 g of boric acid and 10 g of ammonium chloride and which is acidified by adding sulfuric acid.
