Process for the solidification of liquid substances.
The remarkable observation was made that liquids can easily be converted into more or less solid form if they are mixed with magnesium alcoholates in the presence of small amounts of water.
According to the experiments made, the formation of a magnesium half methylate is to be assumed.
You already have magnesium compounds of organic substances such. B. Magnesium salts of certain fatty acids are used to gelatinize liquids, a magnesium compound of casein has also been proposed for this purpose. From this, however, no conclusion can be drawn as to the above-mentioned property of a hitherto not described semi-methylate of magnesium. A major advantage of the new process is that solidification can be brought about with an extremely small amount of magnesium. Usually% is sufficient.
A few examples may explain the process:
Example 1: 120 parts of methyl alcohol with about 0.5-1% water are mixed with a solution of one part of magnesium in 30 parts of methyl alcohol. After a short time, the mixture solidifies into a solid jelly.
Ethyl and other alcohols behave in the same way. With this method you can produce a hard spirit with only 1% residue, which has the great advantage that it does not melt when it burns off.
Example 2: 1-2 parts of magnesium alcoholate solution are added to 10 parts of castor oil and one part of water, dissolved in a little alcohol, is added to this mixture. The jelly formation occurs very soon. The consistency of other oils, such as B. machine oil, can be increased in this way.
Example 3: Liquid hydrocyanic acid with a low water content can be caused to form a solid jelly after standing for some time by adding magnesium alcoholate solution, the handling of which offers advantages over the liquid form in many cases.
A few other examples of liquids that are easy to solidify are: epichlorohydrin, chloroform, benzene, xylene. In addition to uniform liquids, mixtures of liquids with one another or of liquids with solid or gaseous substances, such as. B. alcoholic ammonia solidify by this method.
The method can also be carried out in conjunction with other known methods for the same purpose.
