Abstract

Un gen que codifica una proteína seleccionada del grupo que consiste en )i) una proteína que comprende una secuencia alfa-helicoidal anfifílica donde dichasecuencia comprende (H)u((h)x(H)y)z(h)w donde H es un residuo de aminoácido hidrofílico y puedevariar a lo largo de dicha proteína, h es un residuo deaminoácido hidrofobico y puede variar a lo largo de dicha proteína, u es igual a 0 o 1, x es igual a 1 o 2, y es igual a 1 o 2, z está seleccionado del grupoque consiste en 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16, 17, 18, 19, 20, y cualquier numero entero superior a 20, y w es igual a 0,1 o 2, y donde el valor de x en un((h)x(H)y) no necesita ser igual al valor de x en otro ((h)x(H)y) y donde el valor de y en un ((h)x(H)y) no necesita ser igual al valor de y en otro ((h)x(H)y)y (ii) una proteína que comprende una secuencia de una lámina beta-plegada donde dicha secuencia comprende (H)r(hH)s(h)t donde H es un residuo de aminoácidohidrofílico y puede variar a lo largo de dicha proteína, h es un residuo de aminoácido hidrofobico y puede variar a lo largo de dicha proteína r, es igual a 0o 1, s es cualquier numero entero superior a 0 y t es igual a 0,1 o 2. La expresion del gen que codifica para esta proteína en plantas de cultivo mejorará enormemente la calidad nutricional de los cultivos resultantes. Seha observado también que el gen aumenta el nivel general de produccion de proteínas en una planta. Esta propiedad permite mejorar los niveles de produccion deotras proteínas valiosasen una planta. Por ejemplo, una planta transgénica con un gen que codifica para la insulina puede producir niveles más elevados deinsulina cuando la planta expresa también un gen para una proteína de almacenamiento artificial. El método permite también mejorar la produccion de losproductos no proteicos.
