DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of :Design No. 19,674, dated March 4, 1890. Application tiled January 8, 1890. Serial No. 336,314. Term of patent 14 years.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY BEEHMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State ot New York, (assignor to DAVID WOLFE BRUCE,) have invented a nevi1 and original Design for a Font of Printing-Types, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographic impression, forming part thereof.

These typographie impressions are exact representations ot the design and comprise capital and lower-case letters, punctuationpoints, numerals, and the dollar and poundsterling symbols, and its nature is fully set forth and shown therein.

The characteristic features of this design are the longitudinal splitting or division of most of the up and down strokes of the capital letters into two detached or semi-detached lines, as shown in the capital letters A, B, D, E, and others; the very light Weight of the lines forming the up and down strokes and the heavy weight of the cross-lines and terminals; the additional heavy lines or detached or semi-detached portions of heavy lines (equivalent to the cross-lines of the capital letters A and H) drawn in the central portions of all the capital letters; the flattened proj eotion of some of the curved lines, as shown in the upper portion otthe capital letters C and G and in both the upper and lower portions of the capital letter S, and the short curved and dot-terminated line extending from the lower left-hand portion of nearly all of the capital letters, and with slight modification utilized in other positions, as in the pendants in the upper portion of the capital letters E, F, and T and similar uses in other letters. All the above refers to the capital letters only. The lower-case letters, punctuation-points, numerals, and the dollar and pound-sterling symbols are all drawn in keeping with the capital letters in so far as relates to the light Weight of the lines forming the up and down strokes, the heavy Weight of the cross-lines and terminals, the flattened projection of some of the curve-lines, and the utilization of the short curved and dot-terminated line; but the longitudinal splitting or division of the up and down strokes is omitted, and the only approach to the heavy detached or semidetached lines (equivalent to the cross-lilies of the capital letters A and H) described as being drawn in the central portions of all the capital letters is found in the lozengeshaped ligure in the inner center of the cipher and in the cross-line of the pound-sterling symbol.
