.IOHX GEORGE )IEXGEL, JR., OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 15,723, dated January 13, 1885.
Application filed Xovember .25, 1884. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Jon): G. )IENGEL, Jr., of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of PrintingType, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying typographical impression, making a part thereof.
This fontis designed forthe printing of ornamental head-lines, names, titles, &c., and not for general printing, and it does not comprise the lower-case letters, but includes, beside the capital letters, numerals and punctuationmarks, an et-cetera type, poundsterling type, and initial, terminal, and other rosette types. The letters, numerals, &c., are composed of fine hair'lines, combined with heavily-shaded lines, and in general are characterized by a fine curved line terminating in a small round dot. In every character which contains a single vertical line that line is a heavy line, and except in cases when the vertical line merges into a curve line, as in J and U, has a light horizontal finishing-line at top and bottom. In H, which has two vertical lines, the righthand line is like the vertical lines in the other characters; but the left-hand line, which is also heavy, diminishes to a point at its lower end. In M the right-hand lineis heavy, and the left-hand line light. In N both vertical lines arehair-lines. In U the left-hand line is heavy and the righthand line light. All straight lines which incline downward from left to right are heavy lines, and all straight lines which in :line upward in the opposite direction (with the exception of the inclined line in Z, which, being the main line, is a heavy stroke. cal lines are heavy at their basesand diminish one) are hair-lines. In every case where two the character they are joined by a loop; and the inclined line in Njoins the vertical line at the bottom by a similar loop. All horizontal lines are hair-lines, except the bar in A, the hyphen, and the main horizontal lines in 2. 4, 5, and 7. All curve lines are hair-lines where they join each other and the straight lines, and are heavily shaded on the down- In E, F, L, T, and Z the short vertidown to their points, terminating in a small round dot. The letters A, B. C. D, F, G, ll, J, K, L, N, O, P, R, S, U, V, \V, X. and Y, the numerals l, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, the et-cctera and pound-sterling types, the interrogationmark, the comma, the quotation-mark, and the dash are each ornamented with one or more fine curved lines terminating in asmall round dot, in every case said curved line and dot being solely for the purpose of ornamentation and taking no part in the necessary Configuration of the character. In addition to these characters, the font comprises one initial, one terminal, and two intermediate rosettes, as shown.
I claim as my invention The design for a font of printing-type, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
