DESIGN FOR TYPE.
SYECIFICATIQN forming part of Design No. 18,790, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed November 8, 1888. Serial No. 290,335. Term of patent '7 years To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing, at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and original Design for a Font of Printing-'lype; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying typographic impression, and to the letters marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My design consists of a text-letter of the hack-hand class in which the lines forming the letters are all of the same width or strength and the termination of each line is a small round dot, with the exceptions to be named: The horizontal lines of the letters A, B, H, P, R, f, and t and the vertical line of the do not so terminate, but are rounded at their ends. The upper ends of the vertical or approximately-vertical lines in the letters A, H, J, K, L, M, N, U, V, W, X, Y, b, d, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, t, u, v, w, x, y, and the numeral 1 terminate in the curve and dot to the left, as shown, and the same is true of the upper horizontal lines of B, D, E, F, P, R, T, Z, a, 2, 3, and 7. The upper horizontal lines of O, G, S, c, e, r, 5, and 6 and the lower ends of the ver tical or approXimately-vertical lines of A, F,
ll, L, I, K, M, N, P, Q, R, T, V, \V, X, Y, &, a, l), d, f, h, i, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, t, u, v, w, X, y, 1, 4, and 7 terminate in the curve and dot to the right, as shown, and the same is true of the lower line and cross-bar of E, the crossbars of F and G, the tail of the g, and the lower line of 2. The tail of y and the lower terminal lines of 3, 5, and 9 end in. the curve and dot to the left, as shown, as does the top curve of the character 8, The 0, Q, a, h, d, e, o, p, q, 8, and numeral 0 are not closed, but have a re-entrant curve and dot, as shown. The letters Q, g, j, p, q, and y extend below the line and b, d, f, h, k, l, and t extend above it, as usual. The characters I and harmonize with the remaining letters of the design.
\Vhat I claim as new is The design for a font of printing-type comprising large and small letters, numerals, and punctuation-marks, consisting of characters in which the lines forming them are all of the same strength and terminating in the curved lines and dots, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN WEST.
