Abstract
743,635. Casting-processes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 14, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 34761/53. Class 83 (1). In a method of casting anisotropic permanent magnets from an iron-base alloy containing Ni, Al and Co in which at least one of the pole faces is cooled, as by chill plates 3, 4, at least the major portion of the side-wall of the mould between the pole faces consists of metal sheet insulated against heat losses during casting. The mould cylinder 2 of molybdenum or iron sheet is insulated by a cylinder 1 of heat-insulating material which surrounds the cylinder 2 and forms an air-gap therewith, and by heat-insulating material 5 between the cylinder 2 and the plate 3. The casting- channel is at 6. In a modification, Fig. 2, in which the plate 4 is omitted, the molten alloy is poured through a channel 7 in a block of heat-insulating material into a space outside the cylinder 2 which is thereby heated and the alloy subsequently flows over the upper edge 8 into the mould which is vented at 9. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a number of magnets are cast in a mould divided into separate moulds by sheet-metal partitions and surrounded by an outer heat-insulating wall.
