Abstract
391,125. Tempering castings. BAILEY, R. W., 20, Grange Avenue, Hale, Cheshire, ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd., Vickers Works, Sheffield. Oct. 15, 1931, No. 28609. [Class 72.] In casting iron or other metal or alloy, a metal of low melting point, or a gas or both, is admitted to the space formed between the casting and the mould, to regulate the rate of cooling after as well as during solidification. The mould may, at the same time, be cooled externally by air or water. The method may be applied to the casting of an iron roll 6 in a chill 1 with boxes 2, 3 lined with refractory material 4 for the journals. Fusible metal is admitted by a pipe 12 after the pouring of the iron has commenced. In a modification the moulds for the journals comprise thin metal walls lagged externally. The fusible metal may be withdrawn and reintroduced as required to obtain the desired temper. Specifications 360,980 and 369,640, [both in Group XXII], are referred to.
