Abstract
698,303. Casting processes. BOCHUMER VEREIN FUR GUSSTAHLFABRIKATION AKT.-GES. Nov. 1, 1951 [Nov. 10, 1950], No. 25586/51. Class 83 (i). [Also in Group XI] Cast steel ingots are cooled in the mould by first passing air or other gas through a cooling tube in the mould, gradually adding water to the air and finally passing water alone. The mould has the cooling tube 4 embedded in a loose dry sand layer 3, 10 to 40 mm. thick, adjacent a thin sheet-metal liner 1 which forms the inner face of the mould. The liner may be 1 to 4 mm. thick and becomes fused to the ingot. The molten steel may be produced in a " Siemens-Martin " or an electric furnace and in the mould may be subjected to the effect of low frequency induction currents insufficient to prevent cooling. This may be effected by passing the electric current through the cooling tube 4. The mould may be preheated by induction to 60-200‹ C. There may be a separate tube 4 in each of the sections A, B, C, as shown, so that the ingot can be solidfied from the bottom up by accelerating the cooling of the lower sections. The top section D has the same cross-section but the metal therein may be kept liquid by an arc electrode 7 to allow time for impurities rising from the centre of the ingot to be absorbed by a layer of slag.
