Description

에테르계 용매 기반 전해질 조성물 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 금속 전지
관련 출원(들)과의 상호 인용
본 출원은 2024년 6월 27일자 한국 특허 출원 제10-2024-0084471호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함된다.
본 발명은 에테르계 용매 기반 전해질 조성물 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 금속 전지에 관하여 개시한다.
최근 휴대전화, 노트북 컴퓨터, 전기 자동차 등 전지를 사용하는 전자기기의 급속한 보급에 따라, 작고 가벼우면서도 상대적으로 고용량인 이차전지의 수요가 급속히 증가하고 있다. 특히, 리튬 이차전지는 경량이고 고에너지 밀도를 가지고 있어, 휴대 기기의 구동 전원으로서 각광을 받고 있다. 이에 따라, 리튬 이차전지의 성능향상을 위한 연구개발 노력이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 특히 리튬은 이론상 가장 높은 비용량(3860 mAh g-1)과 가장 낮은 환원 전위(-3.04V vs. SHE)를 가지므로, 음극으로 사용할 때 기존 리튬 이온전지의 에너지 밀도의 한계를 뛰어넘을 수 있는 차세대 음극으로 각광받고 있다.
그러나 리튬 음극은 충방전 동안 수지상으로 리튬 전착되는 특성이 있으며, 이는 분리막 관통 및 데드 리튬 생성으로 이어져 전지의 안전성을 위협하는 요소로 작용하게 된다. 수지상으로 성장하는 주된 원인으로 리튬과 전해질 계면에 자연적으로 형성되는 불안정한 유기물 피막을 들 수 있는데, 이는 불균일한 리튬 탈리/전착을 가속화하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
따라서, 리튬 금속층 표면에 보호층을 형성하거나, 리튬 금속 표면에서 전해질 분해 반응이 억제될 수 있는 신규 전해질을 개발하는 등 상기 리튬 금속 전지의 문제점을 해결하기 위한 다각적인 시도가 이루어지고 있다.
이러한 다각적 시도 중 하나로서, 최근 들어, 전해질 중 리튬염의 농도를 높이는 한편, 리튬염에 대해 상대적으로 용해도가 낮은 비용매(anti-solvent)를 첨가하는 소위 국부적 고농도 염 전해질(Localized High-Concentration Electrolytes; LHCE)이 제안된 바 있다(Chem Vol.4, Issue 8,, August 9, 2018, p1877-1892). 이러한 국부적 고농도 염 전해질은 리튬염의 고농도 영역을 형성하여 리튬 금속 전지의 출력 특성 등을 향상시키면서도, 리튬염의 고농도 영역을 상기 비용매가 둘러쌈에 따라, 리튬 금속층과 전해질의 부반응을 억제하고 리튬 금속 전지의 수명 특성을 향상시킬 수 있는 것으로 예측된다.
또한 종래의 연구에서는 이를 해결하기 위한 접근 방법으로 리튬 표면에 리튬 이온의 이동성을 높이면서도 물리적 특성이 뛰어나다고 평가받는 LiF, Li3N 등으로 이루어진 SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interphase)를 리튬 전극에 형성시키는 방법이 있으며, 이때 수지상을 억제하여 전지 수명을 크게 향상시킬 수 있다고 다수 보고하고 있다.
한편, 대표적으로 리튬 표면에 Li3N 성분의 SEI를 형성시키는 것으로 잘 알려진 LiNO3는 전해액 첨가제로 용해되었을 때 전극 계면을 안정화하여 수명을 향상시킬 수 있으나, 자체 용해도의 한계로 인하여 현재는 저농도 에테르 계열 전해액에 한해 제한적으로 사용할 수 있는 문제가 있다.
이에 본 발명의 발명자들은 리튬 메탈 전지 시스템에서 이온성의 해리유도 첨가제를 적용하여 LiNO3 첨가제의 용해도 한계를 극복하고자 한다. 또한 이를 통하여 수지상을 억제하여 전지 수명을 크게 향상시키고자 한다.
본 발명의 일 구현예에서는, 리튬염, 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매, 및 유기 비용매를 포함하는 전해액; LiNO3를 포함하는 SEI 형성제; 및 해리 유도 첨가제;를 포함하며, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 하기 화학식 1로 나타내는 플루오린기를 갖는 이온성 첨가제이고, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제의 양이온(An+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력이 리튬 이온(Li+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력보다 더 큰, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물을 제공한다.

일 구현예에서, 상기 리튬염은 상기 전해액 상에 용해되어 2 내지 5 M 농도 범위를 가질 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 상기 에테르계 유기 용매는 디메톡시에탄(DME), 1,2-디에톡시에탄(EGDEE), 디메틸 에테르, 디부틸 에테르, 테트라글라임, 및 디글라임 중 하나 이상의 용매를 포함할 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 상기 유기 비용매는 리튬염에 대해 상기 비수성 유기 용매보다 10배 이상 작은 용해도를 나타내는 것일 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 상기 유기 비용매는 1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸-2,2,3,3-테트라플루오로프로필 에테르(TTE), 에틸렌글라이콜 비스(1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸)에테르(TFEE), 비스(2,2,2-트리플루오로에틸) 에테르(BTFE), 1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸-2,2,2-트리플루오로에틸 에테르(TFTFE), 메톡시노나 플루오로부탄(MOFB), 1H,1H,5H-옥타플루오로펜틸-1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸 에테르(OTE) 및 에톡시노나플루오로부탄(EOFB)으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 상기 SEI 형성제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.5 내지 1.5 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.3 내지 1.0 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.4 초과 내지 0.6 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있다.
일 구현예에서, 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여, 상기 SEI 형성제는 0.5 내지 1.5 중량%으로 포함되고, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 0.5 내지 1.0 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 구현예에서는, 전술한 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물; 리튬 금속 전극; 및 상기 리튬 금속 전극 상에 형성된 SEI층;을 포함하며, 상기 SEI층은 LiF 및 Li3N을 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지를 제공한다.
상술한 바와 같이, 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 리튬 금속 전지용 전해질 조성물은 리튬 메탈 전지 시스템에서 이온성의 해리유도 첨가제를 적용하여 LiNO3 첨가제의 용해도 한계를 극복할 수 있다. 특히 SEI 형성제와 해리 유도 첨가제를 특정 함량으로 첨가하여 고농도염 에테르계 전해질에서 이종의 SEI 형성 첨가제의 용해를 촉진시키며, 그 자체로도 SEI 형성에 참여하여 리튬 계면을 안정화함으로써 전지 수명을 향상시킬 수 있다.
본 발명의 효과들은 이상에서 언급한 효과들로 제한되지 않으며, 언급되지 않은 또 다른 효과들은 청구범위의 기재로부터 당업자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있을 것이다.
도 1은 본 발명에 따른 실시예 1 및 비교예 1의 고농도염 에테르계 전해질의 첨가제 유무에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지의 사이클 수명 성능(방전용량)을 비교 도시한다.
도 2는 본 발명에 따른 실시예 1 및 비교예 2-3의 각 리튬 금속 전지용 전해질 별 첨가제 효과에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지의 사이클 수명 성능(초기 사이클 대비 용량 유지율)을 비교 도시한다.
이하, 발명의 구체적인 구현예에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물 등에 대해 설명하기로 한다.
본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.

본 발명의 일 구현예에서는, 리튬염, 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매, 및 유기 비용매를 포함하는 전해액; LiNO3를 포함하는 SEI 형성제; 및 해리 유도 첨가제;를 포함하며, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 하기 화학식 1로 나타내는 플루오린기를 갖는 이온성 첨가제이고, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제의 양이온(An+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력이 리튬 이온(Li+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력보다 더 큰, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물을 제공한다.

여기서, A는 Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, 및 Zn 중 어느 하나를 포함한다.
이러한 일 구현예의 전해질은 국부적 고농도 염 전해질(Localized High-Concentration Electrolytes; LHCE)의 범주에 속할 수 있고, 전지의 충, 방전 중에 리튬염이 고농도로 비수성 유기 용매에 용해된 고농도 영역과, 이러한 고농도 영역 주위에 상기 유기 비용매가 분포하는 형태를 나타낼 수 있다. 이에 상기 전해질을 사용할 경우, 상기 리튬염의 고농도 분포에 의해 전지의 출력 특성이 향상될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 유기 비용매 분포 영역에 따라, 리튬 금속층과 전해질의 부반응을 억제하고 리튬 금속 이차전지의 수명 특성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
구체적으로, 플루오린기를 갖는 이온성 첨가제의 양이온(An+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력이 리튬 이온(Li+)과 NO3 -보다 크므로 두 이온성 물질을 함께 첨가했을 때, 해 양이온은 NO3 - 이온에 의해 배위 되며(coordinate), 이에 LiNO3의 용해를 촉진시킬 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 전해질 조성물은 저농도 에테르계 전해질에서만 적용 가능했던 기존 제약을 벗어나, 전해액의 농도에 무관하게 작용할 수 있다는 점에서 의의를 가질 수 있다.
상기 전해액에 포함되는 리튬 염은 리튬 이차전지 내에서 이온을 전달하기 위한 매개체로서 사용되는 것으로서, 일반적으로 전해액에 널리 적용되는 리튬 염을 사용할 수 있다. 리튬염은 예를 들어 양이온으로 Li+를 포함하고, F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, NO3 -, N(CN)2 -, BF4 -, ClO4 -, B10Cl10 -, AlCl4 -, AlO2 -, PF6 -, CF3SO3 -, CH3CO2 -, CF3CO2 -, AsF6 -, SbF6 -, CH3SO3 -, (CF3CF2SO2)2N-, (CF3SO2)2N-, (FSO2)2N-, BF2C2O4 -, BC4O8 -, PF4C2O4 -, PF2C4O8 -, (CF3)2PF4 -, (CF3)3PF3 -, (CF3)4PF2 -, (CF3)5PF-, (CF3)6P-, C4F9SO3 -, CF3CF2SO3 -, CF3CF2(CF3)2CO-, (CF3SO2)2CH-, CF3(CF2)7SO3 - 및 SCN-으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 음이온을 함께 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, LiCl, LiBr, LiI, LiClO4, LiBF4, LiB10Cl10, LiPF6, LiCF3SO3, LiCF3CO2, LiC4BO8, LiAsF6, LiSbF6, LiAlCl4, CH3SO3Li, CF3SO3Li, (C2F5SO2)2NLi, (SO2F)2NLi(즉, LiFSI), (CF3SO2)2NLi(즉, LiTFSI), (CF3SO2)3CLi, 클로로보란 리튬, 탄소수 4 이하의 저급 지방족 카르본산 리튬, 4-페닐 붕산 리튬 및 리튬 이미드로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택되는 1종 이상을 예시할 수 있으나, 이에 제한되지 않는다. 상기 리튬 염은, 비수성 에테르계 용매에 용해되어, 리튬 이온의 공급원으로 작용하여 리튬 금속 전지의 기본적인 작동을 가능하게 하고, 양극과 음극 사이의 리튬 이온의 이동을 촉진하는 역할을 할 수 있다.
또한 예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매는 리튬염에 대하여 높은 용해도를 갖는 것으로서, 예를 들어 디메톡시에탄(DME), 1,2-디에톡시에탄(EGDEE), 디메틸 에테르, 디부틸 에테르, 테트라글라임, 및 디글라임 중 하나 이상의 용매를 포함할 수 있다. 한편, 전해액 용매로 널리 쓰이는 카보네이트 계열 용매는 상기 비수성 에테르계 용매에 비하여 환원 전위가 높아 리튬 메탈 음극에서 쉽게 환원되게 된다. 이에, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물에서는 카보네이트계 용매에 비하여 비수성 에테르계 용매 사용이 유리할 수 있다.
한편, 상기 예시적인 구현예의 전해질은 상술한 리튬염 및 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매 외에, 상기 리튬염에 대해 상기 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매보다 10배 이상, 혹은 10배 내지 30배 작은 용해도를 나타내어 리튬염을 실질적으로 용해시키지 않는 유기 비용매를 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 유기 비용매는 리튬염에 대해 실질적으로 용해도를 나타내지 않으며, 예를 들어, 리튬염을 0.1M 이하, 혹은 0 내지 0.1M, 혹은 0 내지 0.05M의 농도로만 용해시킬 수 있는 것으로 정의될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 유기 비용매는 상기 리튬염에 대한 낮은 용해도를 나타내면서, 상기 비수성 유기 용매와 혼화 가능한 유기 용매일 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 유기 비용매는 1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸-2,2,3,3-테트라플루오로프로필 에테르(TTE), 에틸렌글라이콜 비스(1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸)에테르(TFEE), 비스(2,2,2-트리플루오로에틸) 에테르(BTFE), 1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸-2,2,2-트리플루오로에틸 에테르(TFTFE), 메톡시노나 플루오로부탄(MOFB), 1H,1H,5H-옥타플루오로펜틸-1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸 에테르(OTE) 및 에톡시노나플루오로부탄(EOFB)으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.

상기 유기 비용매를 더 포함하는 예시적인 구현예의 전해질은, 상술한 바와 같이, 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매 내에 국부적으로 고농도의 리튬염이 존재하는 영역과 함께, 리튬염이 실질적으로 존재하지 않는 상기 유기 비용매 분포 영역을 포함할 수 있다. 이와 같이, 전해질 내에 국부적으로 고농도의 리튬염이 용매화된 형태로 존재함에 따라, 리튬 이차전지의 출력 특성이 더욱 향상될 수 있으면서도, 상기 유기 비용매 분포 영역에 의해 전해질의 점도 증가 및 유동성 저하를 줄일 수 있다.
상기 유기 비용매는 상기 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매 및 리튬염의 종류나, 리튬염의 전체적인 농도에 따라 그 사용량을 조절할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 상기 유기 비용매 : 상기 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매의 몰비가 1 : 0.4 내지 1 : 1, 혹은 1 : 0.4 내지 1 : 0.67로 되는 함량으로 전해질에 포함될 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 리튬염은 상기 전해액 상에 용해되어 2 내지 5 M 농도 범위를 가질 수 있다. 예를 들어, 2.5M 이상, 3.0M 이상, 3.5M 이상, 또는 4.5M 이하, 4.0M 이하, 3.5M 이하의 농도 범위를 가질 수 있다. 종래의 전해액 조성물과 달리, 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 전해질 조성물은 상기 범위와 같은 고농도염 조성에서도 SEI 형성제를 충분히 용해시킬 수 있으며, 이를 통하여 전극 계면을 안정화하여 수명을 향상시킬 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 SEI 형성제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.5 내지 1.5 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있다. 상기 범위에서 우수한 전지 수명 향상 효과를 가질 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.3 내지 1.0 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 0.4 중량% 이상, 0.5 중량% 이상, 0.4 중량% 이상, 또는 0.9 중량% 이하, 0.8 중량% 이하, 0.7 중량% 이하, 0.6 중량% 이하 일 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.4 초과 내지 0.6 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있다. 상기 범위로 해리 유도 첨가제를 포함하는 경우 SEI 형성제 용해도를 향상시킬 수 있으며 특히 과소량 첨가시 수명 특성 향상 효과가 감소할 수 있고 과량 첨가시 용해도에 문제가 있을 수 있다.
한편 예시적인 구현예에서, 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여, 상기 SEI 형성제는 0.5 내지 1.5 중량%으로 포함되고, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 0.5 내지 1.0 중량%로 포함될 수 있으며, 이때 SEI 형성제 용해도를 향상시킴으로써 우수한 전지 수명 향상 효과를 가질 수 있으며, 다만 과다하게 포함되는 경우 용해되지 않고 침전될 수 있다.
리튬 메탈 전지
본 발명의 다른 구현예에서는, 전술한 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물; 리튬 금속 전극; 및 상기 리튬 금속 전극 상에 형성된 SEI층;을 포함하며, 상기 SEI층은 LiF 및 Li3N을 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지를 제공한다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 리튬 금속 전극은 리튬 금속 박막 또는 음극 집전체 상에 형성된 리튬 금속 박막을 포함하는 음극일 수 있으며, 일반적으로 알려진 리튬 금속 음극과 구조 상 차이는 없을 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 리튬 금속 음극은 1 내지 20 um 두께의 구리 집전체;만으로 이루어지거나, 상기 구리 집전체의 양면 또는 단면 상에 1 내지 100 um, 예컨대 1 내지 50 um의 두께로 코팅된 상기 리튬 금속 층;을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 예시적인 구현예에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지는 양극을 더 포함할 수 있으며, 이때 양극은 당업계에 일반적으로 알려진 리튬 금속 전지의 양극과 구조 상 차이는 없을 수 있으며, 구체적으로 양극 집전체 상에 형성되고, 리튬 금속 산화물을 포함하는 양극 활물질층을 포함한 양극일 수 있다.
여기서, 리튬 금속 산화물은, 일반적으로 양극 활물질로 알려진 것, 예컨대, LiFePO4, LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiNiO2, LiNi1-xCoxO2(0<x<1), LiMnO2 등의 복합금속 산화물들을 사용할 수 있다.
이와 달리, 상기 리튬 금속 산화물로, 하기 화학식 1로 표시되는 것을 사용할 수 있다:

상기 화학식 1에서, M1은 Zr, Mg, Al, Ni, Mn, Zn, Fe, Cr, Mo, 또는 W이고, Me는 하기 화학식 2로 표시되는 것이고,

상기 화학식 1 및 2에서, 0.97≤x≤1.03, 0.50≤a≤0.90, 0<b≤0.3, 0<c≤0.3, 0≤d<0.01이고, a+b+c+d = 1이다.
상기 화학식 1로 표시되는 리튬 금속 산화물은, 이른바 NCM으로 알려진 양극 활물질로, 결정 구조 상 레이어드(layered) 구조를 가지며, 앞서 나열한 LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiNiO2, LiNi1-xCoxO2(0<x<1), LiMnO2 등의 복합금속 산화물들에 대비하여 에너지 밀도가 높은 것일 수 있다.
보다 구체적으로, 상기 화학식 2에서 a가 상기 범위 내에서 더 높은 값을 가질수록, 전지의 출력 향상에 기여할 수 있으나, 상기 예시적인 구현예는 이에 제한되지 않는다.
상기 리튬 금속 산화물의 조성과 무관하게, 그 표면에 코팅층을 갖는 것도 사용할 수 있고, 또는 상기 리튬 금속 산화물과 코팅층을 갖는 화합물을 혼합하여 사용할 수도 있다. 상기 코팅층은 코팅 원소 화합물로서, 코팅 원소의 옥사이드, 하이드록사이드, 코팅 원소의 옥시하이드록사이드, 코팅 원소의 옥시카보네이트 또는 코팅 원소의 하이드록시카보네이트를 포함할 수 있다. 이들 코팅층을 이루는 화합물은 비정질 또는 결정질일 수 있다. 상기 코팅층에 포함되는 코팅 원소로는 Mg, Al, Co, K, Na, Ca, Si, Ti, V, Sn, Ge, Ga, B, As, Zr 또는 이들의 혼합물을 사용할 수 있다. 코팅층 형성 공정은 상기 화합물에 이러한 원소들을 사용하여 양극 활물질의 물성에 악영향을 주지 않는 방법(예를 들어 스프레이 코팅, 침지법 등으로 코팅할 수 있으면 어떠한 코팅 방법을 사용하여도 무방하며, 이에 대하여는 당해 분야에 종사하는 사람들에게 잘 이해될 수 있는 내용이므로 자세한 설명은 생략하기로 한다.
상기 예시적인 구현예의 양극 활물질 층은 비가역 보상 양극재를 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 비가역 보상 첨가제는, 리튬 이차전지의 최초 충전 시 리튬 이온이 탈리되어 음극 집전체의 단일층 상에 리튬 이온을 공급하며, 리튬 이온이 탈리된 비가역 보상 첨가제는 비가역 상으로 전환되어 리튬 이온을 흡장하지 않는 것일 수 있다. 여기서, 비가역 보상 첨가제는, 일반적으로 알려진 Li2NiO2, Li2CuO2, Li6CoO4, Li5FeO4, Li6MnO4, Li2MoO3, Li3N, Li2O, LiOH 및 Li2CO3를 포함하는 군에서 선택되는 1종 이상일 수 있다. 상기 비가역 보상 첨가제는 상기 양극 활물질 총 중량의 1 내지 50 중량% 범위로 포함될 수 있으나, 본 발명이 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 예시적인 구현예의 양극 활물질 층은 바인더, 경우에 따라서는 도전재, 충진재 등을 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 도전재는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 카본블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서머 블랙 등의 카본블랙; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본, 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스키; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 양극 활물질 입자들을 서로 잘 부착시키고, 또한 양극 활물질을 전류 집전체에 잘 부착시키는 역할을 하며, 그 대표적인 예로는 폴리비닐알콜, 카르복시메틸셀룰로즈, 히드록시프로필셀룰로즈, 디아세틸셀룰로즈, 폴리비닐클로라이드, 카르복실화된 폴리비닐클로라이드, 폴리비닐플루오라이드, 에틸렌 옥사이드를 포함하는 폴리머, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리우레탄, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 스티렌-부타디엔 러버, 아크릴레이티드 스티렌-부타디엔 러버, 에폭시 수지, 나일론 등을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 예시적인 구현예에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지는 상기 음극 및 양극 사이에 형성된 분리막;을 더 포함할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 전술한 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물은 상기 분리막에 함침된 것일 수 있으며, 예를 들어 상기 분리막 내 기공에 상기 전해질이 위치하는 것을 의미할 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 전해질 조성물은, 상기 음극 및 상기 양극 사이에 위치하는 다공성 분리막에 함침된 형태일 수 있다. 여기서, 다공성 분리막은, 음극과 양극을 분리하고 리튬 이온의 이동 통로를 제공하는 것으로 리튬 전지에서 통상적으로 사용되는 것이라면 모두 사용 가능하다.  즉, 전해질의 이온 이동에 대하여 저저항이면서 전해액 함습 능력이 우수한 것이 사용될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 유리 섬유, 폴리에스테르, 테프론, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE) 또는 이들의 조합물 중에서 선택된 것으로서, 부직포 또는 직포 형태이어도 무방하다.  예를 들어, 리튬이온전지에는 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌 등과 같은 폴리올레핀계 고분자 분리막이 주로 사용되고, 내열성 또는 기계적 강도 확보를 위해 세라믹 성분 또는 고분자 물질이 포함되거나 코팅된 분리막이 사용될 수도 있으며, 선택적으로 단층 또는 다층 구조로 사용될 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 고체 전해질 계면 막(SEI층)은 상기 리튬 금속 전극 상에 형성될 수 있는데, 상기 고체 전해질 계면 막은 고체 전해질 전지의 초기 충전과정을 통해 음극 활물질 표면에서 반응을 일으켜 형성될 수 있으며, 이를 통하여 음극의 퇴화를 방지할 수 있고, 이를 통해 전지의 수명 특성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
구체적으로, 상기 고체 전해질 계면 막은 10nm 내지 1 ㎛의 두께 범위를 가질 수 있다. 이러한 고체 전해질 계면 막의 두께는 리튬 금속 전지용 전해질 조성물에서 SEI 형성제 및 및 해리 유도 첨가제 구성의 함량에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 본 발명의 구현예에 따른 전해질 조성물을 적용하는 경우, 고체 전해질 계면 막이 리튬 메탈 전극 상에, 예컨대 10 내지 30 nm의 두께 범위 또는 15 내지 25 nm의 두께 범위인, 최적 두께 범위로 형성될 수 있으므로, 이를 통하여 우수한 전지 수명 특성 등을 구현할 수 있다.
예시적인 구현예에서, 상기 SEI층은 LiF 및 Li3N을 포함할 수 있다. 특히, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제의 음이온(F-)은 해리된 후 리튬 음극과 반응하여 Li3N 및 LiF이 풍부하게 포함된 SEI층을 형성할 수 있다. 상기 SEI 층은 LiF와 Li3N의 성분들을 포함하여, 기존 네이티브 SEI 대비 기계적 물성이 뛰어나 균일하게 유지시킬 수 있으며, 균일한 리튬 전착을 유도하며 화학적으로 안정하여 환원 전압대(<3.0)에서 부산물의 환원을 줄여 리튬 음극을 보호할 수 있다.
실시예
이하, 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 용이하게 실시할 수 있도록 본 발명의 실시예에 대하여 상세히 설명한다. 그러나 본 발명은 여러 가지 상이한 형태로 구현될 수 있으며 여기에서 설명하는 실시예에 한정되지 않는다.
비교예 1
LiFSI : DME : TTE = 1mol : 2.4mol : 2.4mol의 몰 비율이 되도록 고농도 리튬염 에테르계 전해액을 제조하였다. 즉, DME/TTE 용매에 LiFSI염은 4.62m로 용해되었다.
비교예 2
EC:DEC 1:1(v:v) 용매 혼합물에 LiPF6를 1M 농도 만큼 용해시켰다. 여기에 첨가제로 VC 1wt%와 FEC 10wt%를 첨가하고, SEI 형성제로 1wt% LiNO3와 해리 유도 첨가제로 0.2 wt% CuF2를 첨가하였고, 이를 충분히 교반하여 전해질 조성물을 제조하였다.
비교예 3
비교예 1의 에테르계 전해액 상에, SEI 형성제로 1wt% LiNO3와 해리 유도 첨가제로 0.2 wt% CuF2를 첨가하였고, 이를 충분히 교반하여 전해질 조성물을 제조하였다.
실시예 1
SEI 형성제로 1wt% LiNO3와 해리 유도 첨가제로 0.5 wt% CuF2를 첨가한 것을 제외하고 비교예 1과 동일한 방법으로 전해질 조성물을 제조하였다.
실험예 1: 전지 수명 특성
1) 비교예 1과 실시예 1의 전해질 조성물을 적용한 코인셀(2032 규격)을 제조하여 충방전 테스트를 수행하였다. 구체적으로, LFP(입수처: 엘지에너지솔루션)를 작업 전극, 45 μm 두께의 리튬을 카운터 전극으로 하여 서로 대면되도록 위치시키고, 양 전극 사이에 폴리에틸렌(PE) 분리막을 개재시킨 후, 비교예 1과 실시예 1의 전해질 조성물 60 μL를 각각 주입하고 밀봉하여 각각의 2032 코인형 LFP|Li 풀 셀 샘플을 제조하였다. 제조된 셀에 대하여, 첫 두 사이클은 0.1C/0.1C 조건으로 전 활성화(pre-activation)시켰으며, 이후 0.5C 충전 및 0.5C 방전 사이클을 반복하며 시간(사이클)에 따른 방전 용량(discharge capacity)을 측정하였으며, 그 결과를 도 1에 도시하였다.
도 1을 참고하면, 고농도 리튬염 에테르계 전해액의 경우, SEI 형성제(LiNO3)와 해리 유도 첨가제(CuF2)를 첨가한 실시예 1에서 리튬 음극에 유리한 LiF 및 Li3N 성분의 안정한 SEI가 형성되어 전해액과의 부반응을 줄이고 수지상 리튬 전착을 억제하여 더 우수한 수명 특성을 갖는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
2) 또한, SEI 형성제(LiNO3)와 해리 유도 첨가제(CuF2)를 첨가한 경우 염의 농도와 첨가제 양에 따른 수명을 동일한 조건의 충/방전 사이클에서 용량 유지율(retention rate)을 측정하여 그 결과를 도 2에 도시하였다.
도 2를 참고하면, 선행 연구 조건의 용매 및 첨가제 조성(1.0wt% LiNO3, 0.2wt% CuF2)의 저농도염 카보네이트계 전해질을 적용한 비교예 2의 경우 100사이클 이내에서 용량 유지율이 급격하게 낮아졌다. 고농도 리튬염 에테르계 전해질에 동일한 첨가제 조성을 적용한 비교예 3의 경우도 300사이클 이내에 용량 유지율이 낮아지는 것을 확인하였다. 한편, 해리 유도 첨가제를 0.5wt%까지 증가시킨 고농도 리튬염 에테르계 전해액 실시예 1은 약 400사이클 이내까지 용량 유지율 70% 이상의 수준을 보이며 셀 수명이 향상된 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
이상에서 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대하여 상세하게 설명하였지만 본 발명의 권리범위는 이에 한정되는 것은 아니고 다음의 청구범위에서 정의하고 있는 본 발명의 기본 개념을 이용한 당업자의 여러 변형 및 개량 형태 또한 본 발명의 권리범위에 속하는 것이다.

Claims (10)

  1. 리튬염, 비수성 에테르계 유기 용매, 및 유기 비용매를 포함하는 전해액;
    LiNO3를 포함하는 SEI 형성제; 및
    해리 유도 첨가제;를 포함하며,
    상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 하기 화학식 1로 나타내는 플루오린기를 갖는 이온성 첨가제이고, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제의 양이온(An+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력이 리튬 이온(Li+)의 NO3 -에 대한 결합력보다 더 큰, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.

    여기서, A는 Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, 및 Zn 중 어느 하나를 포함한다.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬염은 상기 전해액 상에 용해되어 2 내지 5 M 농도 범위를 갖는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 에테르계 유기 용매는 디메톡시에탄(DME), 1,2-디에톡시에탄(EGDEE), 디메틸 에테르, 디부틸 에테르, 테트라글라임, 및 디글라임 중 하나 이상의 용매를 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 유기 비용매는 리튬염에 대해 상기 비수성 유기 용매보다 10배 이상 작은 용해도를 나타내는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 유기 비용매는 1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸-2,2,3,3-테트라플루오로프로필 에테르(TTE), 에틸렌 글라이콜 비스(1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸)에테르(TFEE), 비스(2,2,2-트리플루오로에틸) 에테르(BTFE), 1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸-2,2,2-트리플루오로에틸 에테르(TFTFE), 메톡시노나 플루오로부탄(MOFB), 1H,1H,5H-옥타플루오로펜틸-1,1,2,2-테트라플루오로에틸 에테르(OTE) 및 에톡시노나플루오로부탄(EOFB)으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 SEI 형성제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.5 내지 1.5 중량% 범위로 포함되는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.3 내지 1.0 중량% 범위로 포함된, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여 0.4 초과 내지 0.6 중량% 범위로 포함된, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    리튬 이차전지용 전해질 전체 중량에 대하여, 상기 SEI 형성제는 0.5 내지 1.5 중량%으로 포함되고, 상기 해리 유도 첨가제는 0.5 내지 1.0 중량%로 포함된, 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물.
  10. 제1항 내지 제9항 중 어느 하나에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 전해질 조성물;
    리튬 금속 전극; 및
    상기 리튬 금속 전극 상에 형성된 SEI층;을 포함하며,
    상기 SEI층은 LiF 및 Li3N을 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지.
