- a pump installed in the ink flow path is used as a means of controlling pressure.
- using a pump to control the internal pressure of the inkjet head and the pressure in the ink flow path can cause pressure fluctuations due to pump pulsations, etc. These pressure fluctuations not only hinder stable ink supply, but can also interfere with stable operation of the inkjet head.

- This feature prevents deterioration of the flexible membrane separating the liquid chamber and the gas chamber, extending its service life.
- the pressure buffer device is the pressure buffer device according to the first aspect, wherein the difference between the surface energy of the flexible membrane and the surface tension of the liquid is preferably 5.5 mN/m or more.

- the thickness of the flexible membrane is 0.3 mm or more and 1.0 mm or less.
- the thickness of the flexible membrane is 0.3 mm or more and 0.6 mm or less.
- the liquid includes water.
- a liquid supply device is a liquid supply device comprising: a liquid flow path that connects a liquid ejection head that ejects liquid with a liquid tank that stores the liquid; a pump that applies a predetermined pressure to the liquid in the liquid flow path; and a pressure buffer device according to any one of the first to sixth aspects that is provided in the liquid flow path.
- the liquid supply device is the liquid supply device according to the seventh aspect, further comprising at least one processor and a valve that switches between opening and closing the gas chamber to the atmosphere, and preferably the processor changes the amount of deflection of the flexible membrane using a pump while the gas chamber is open to the atmosphere, and closes the gas chamber to the atmosphere when the amount of deflection reaches a predetermined amount.

- FIG. 13 is a diagram showing the overall configuration of an inkjet printing apparatus.
- ⁇ Overall configuration of non-circulating ink supply device> 1 is a diagram showing the overall configuration of an ink supply device.
- the ink supply device 10 (an example of a “liquid supply device") is connected to an inkjet head 50 (an example of a “liquid ejection head") that ejects ink (an example of a "liquid”) from a plurality of nozzles (not shown), and an ink tank 52 (an example of a "liquid tank”) that stores the ink.
- the ink supply device 10 is a non-circulating ink supply device that supplies ink from the ink tank 52 to the inkjet head 50.
- the ink supply device 10 includes a supply flow path 12, a supply valve 14, a pressure sensor 16, a supply sub-tank 18, a supply pump 20, a drain flow path 28, a drain valve 30, an air flow path 32, an air connect valve 34, an air tank 36, an atmosphere communication path 38, and an air valve 40.
- the supply flow path 12 (an example of a "liquid flow path") connects the inkjet head 50 and the ink tank 52.
- the supply flow path 12 is equipped with a supply valve 14, a pressure sensor 16, a supply sub-tank 18, and a supply pump 20.
- the supply valve 14 switches between communication and non-communication between the inkjet head 50 and the supply flow path 12.
- the supply valve 14 is a normally open or latch type electromagnetic valve whose opening and closing is controlled by a control signal.
- the pressure sensor 16 converts the internal pressure of the supply flow path 12 into an electrical signal and outputs it.
- the pressure sensor 16 may be a semiconductor piezo-resistive, capacitive, or silicon resonant sensor.
- the supply sub-tank 18 is an example of a pressure buffer device, and a flexible membrane 22 separates the liquid chamber 24 and the gas chamber 26.
- the liquid chamber 24 has an ink outlet 24A, an ink inlet 24B, and an air bubble outlet 27.
- the ink outlet 24A communicates with the inkjet head 50 via the supply flow path 12 and the supply valve 14, allowing ink to flow out of the liquid chamber 24.
- the ink inlet 24B communicates with the ink tank 52 via the supply flow path 12 and the supply pump 20, allowing liquid to flow into the liquid chamber 24.
- the air bubble outlet 27 communicates with the ink tank 52 via the drain flow path 28 and the drain valve 30.
- the drain flow path 28 is a flow path used to forcibly discharge ink from the liquid chamber 24.
- the drain valve 30 When the drain valve 30 is opened, the ink in the liquid chamber 24 is sent to the ink tank 52 via the drain flow path 28.
- Air (an example of "gas") is stored in the gas chamber 26.
- the gas chamber 26 has an air flow path communication port 26B.
- the air flow path communication port 26B communicates with the air tank 36 via the air flow path 32 and the air connect valve 34.
- the air tank 36 communicates with the atmosphere via an air valve 40 provided in the atmosphere communication passage 38.
- the volume of the gas chamber 26 increases when the air connect valve 34 is opened and the air valve 40 is closed.
- the gas chamber 26 and air tank 36 are opened to the atmosphere when the air connect valve 34 and the air valve 40 are opened. In other words, the air connect valve 34 and the air valve 40 switch between opening and closing the gas chamber 26 to the atmosphere.
- the supply pump 20 is positioned between the supply sub-tank 18 and the ink tank 52 in the supply flow path 12.
- the supply pump 20 applies pressure to the inside of the supply flow path 12.
- the supply sub-tank 18 and air tank 36 form a pressure buffer that suppresses fluctuations in the internal pressure of the inkjet head 50 and fluctuations in the internal pressure of the supply flow path 12 due to pulsating flow caused by operation of the supply pump 20.
- the air tank 36 has a volume three times the maximum volume of the gas chamber 26.
- the "maximum volume of the gas chamber 26" is the volume of the gas chamber 26 when the flexible membrane 22 is in the initial deflection state described below. From the perspective of pressure buffering function, a larger volume of the gas chamber 26 is preferable. However, because the amount of deformation of the flexible membrane 22 is finite, the volume of the gas chamber 26 is limited by the amount of deformation of the flexible membrane 22.
- an air tank 36 is provided as a buffer tank for the gas chamber 26.
- the air tank 36 only needs to have a volume that exceeds the maximum volume of the gas chamber 26, and is preferably at least three times the maximum volume of the gas chamber 26.
- the volume of the air tank 36 is made too large, the responsiveness of pressure control will decrease, so there is an optimal value for the total volume of the gas chamber 26 and the air tank 36.
- a normally open electromagnetic valve is used for the air connect valve 34. Furthermore, a normally closed electromagnetic valve is used for the air valve 40. This prevents ink from leaking from the inkjet head 50 even if the power is cut off due to an emergency stop function being activated, for example.
- FIG. 2 is a diagram showing an example of the structure of the supply subtank 18.
- Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the supply subtank 18.
- the supply subtank 18 divides the interior of the sealed container using a flexible membrane 22, with one side of the flexible membrane 22 forming a liquid chamber 24 and the other side forming a gas chamber 26.
- the ink outlet 24A is located at the bottom vertically, where air bubbles have difficulty flowing, to prevent them from flowing into the inkjet head 50.
- the air bubble discharge port 27 is located at the top vertically, so that air bubbles can easily escape from the top.
- the flexible membrane 22 expands and contracts like a balloon when absorbing pressure fluctuations. For example, when ink flows into the liquid chamber 24 from the ink inlet 24B, the flexible membrane 22 deforms toward the gas chamber 26 in accordance with the volume of the ink that flows in. On the other hand, the volume of ink flowing out from the ink outlet 24A does not change, so even if pressure fluctuations occur in the supply flow path 12, the pressure fluctuations are suppressed by the action of the supply sub-tank 18.
- the supply sub-tank 18 has a pressure buffering function that suppresses internal pressure fluctuations in the inkjet head 50 and fluctuations in the internal pressure of the supply flow path 12 due to pulsating flow caused by the operation of the supply pump 20.
- the gas chamber 26 of the supply subtank 18 has a dome-shaped inner wall surface 26A that faces the flexible membrane 22 and is made up of curved surfaces. This prevents the flexible membrane 22 from being damaged even if it deforms and comes into contact with the inner wall surface 26A, ensuring the durability of the flexible membrane 22.
- the flexible membrane 22 has a three-dimensional shape that follows the shape of the inner wall surface 26A of the gas chamber 26.
- the negative pressure characteristics of the flexible membrane 22 are such that there is almost no pressure change in the slackened area of the flexible membrane 22 while the amount of ink flowing in and out is small, but when the flexible membrane 22 bulges, a sudden change in pressure occurs.
- the negative pressure characteristics of the flexible membrane 22 vary depending on the type and thickness of the membrane, etc.
- the negative pressure characteristics of the gas chamber 26 are uniformly determined once the capacities of the gas chamber 26 and air tank 36 are determined. Furthermore, the negative pressure characteristics of the entire system are the sum of the negative pressure characteristics of the flexible membrane 22 and the negative pressure characteristics of the gas chamber 26 and air tank 36. Therefore, the capacities of the gas chamber 26 and air tank 36 can be determined taking into account the pressure control performance in the slack region of the flexible membrane 22. In other words, the lower limit of the capacity is determined by the stability and pressure buffering properties of the pressure control, and the upper limit is determined by the responsiveness of the pressure control, so there are optimal values for the capacities of the gas chamber 26 and air tank 36. Furthermore, since the lower limit of the capacity of the gas chamber 26 is determined by the initial deflection amount of the flexible membrane 22, and the upper limit is determined by the maximum deformation amount of the flexible membrane 22, there is an optimal value for the capacity of the gas chamber 26.
- the flexible membrane 22 is fixed by bending it so that the gas chamber 26 side forms a three-dimensional convex shape, but the flexible membrane 22 may also be fixed by bending it so that the liquid chamber 24 side forms a three-dimensional convex shape.
- the hardening and deterioration of the flexible film can be solved by either preventing the ink from penetrating the flexible film or by preventing the plasticizer from dissolving into the ink. In other words, it is necessary to (1) make it difficult for the ink to penetrate the flexible film, and (2) prevent the flexible film from hardening even when it contains ink.
- fluororubber is known to be more expensive than other rubber materials. Furthermore, in recent years, environmental regulations for fluorine-based materials have been tightened. For example, in Europe, restrictions on the use of fluorine-based materials have been tightened as they are now subject to PFAS (Per- and PolyFluoroAlkyl Substances) regulations, which increases the risk that fluororubber will no longer be used actively. Therefore, the use of fluororubber is difficult.
- PFAS Per- and PolyFluoroAlkyl Substances
- ⁇ Configuration of flexible film> 3 is a perspective view of the flexible membrane 22.
- the flexible membrane 22 has a three-dimensional shape including a flange portion F formed on a flat surface and a dome portion D formed in a dome shape.
- the dome shape refers to a shape with a bulge formed by a curved surface, and includes a shape obtained by cutting a portion of a sphere with a flat surface and a shape with a parabolic cross section.
- the dome shape is suitable for being inflated like a balloon, which allows for efficient pressure suppression.
- FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the flexible membrane 22 taken perpendicular to the flange portion F.
- the dome portion D is made up of a membrane with a uniform thickness t.
- the membrane thickness t (an example of “membrane thickness”) is preferably 1.0 mm or less, and is particularly preferably relatively thin, between 0.3 mm and 0.6 mm. This is because if the membrane is relatively thick, the rigidity of the elastic member increases, reducing the pressure suppression effect. On the other hand, if the membrane is thinner than 0.3 mm, the material may not be strong enough when expanded, resulting in rupture.
- the flexible film 22 is made of ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM: Ethylene Propylene Diene Methylene Linkage).
- EPDM Ethylene Propylene Diene Methylene Linkage
- the plasticizer forming the EPDM has a high molecular weight substance containing adipic acid ester, which is an ester-based plasticizer.
- the surface energy of the EPDM is 22.5 mN/m.
- flexible film 22 made from EPDM containing adipic acid ester will not harden even when used with water-based inks with a surface energy of 28 mN/m and water-based inks with a surface energy of 35 mN/m.
- the inventors have also confirmed that flexible film 22 made from EPDM containing adipic acid ester has a lifespan that is more than 10 times longer than flexible films made from conventional materials.
- Example 1 [Changes in mass and hardness]
- the film was immersed in ink, and the changes in film mass and hardness were measured.
- the immersion time was 168 hours, and the immersion temperature was 60°C.

- the surface tension of the ink was measured using a surface tensiometer, BVP-Z (Kyowa Interface Science Co., Ltd.).
- the hardness of the film was measured using a nanoindenter, TI-950 (Bruker), under the conditions of a 1 ⁇ m spherical indenter, an indentation load of 7 ⁇ N, and an indentation depth of 500-700 nm.
- film The films were prepared from the following four materials:
- Level 1 Thermoplastic elastomer with a mineral oil-based plasticizer
- Level 2 EPDM with a mineral oil-based plasticizer
- Level 3 EPDM containing an adipate ester as a plasticizer
- Level 4 Fluorine rubber (FKM)
- the ink used contains water, pigment, dispersant, oxidant, organic solvent, modifier, colloidal silica, resin particles, wax particles, silicone surfactant, and acetylene glycol surfactant.
- the dispersant has the function of dispersing the pigment. To improve the ejection properties of the ink, the dispersant is crosslinked.
- Figure 5 is a table showing the amount (parts by mass) of the active ingredients of the ink.
- the total amount of the active ingredients and the amount of water shown in Figure 5 is 100 parts by mass. Details of the following components in Figure 5 are as follows: Sannix GP250: Polyoxypropylated glycerin manufactured by Sanyo Chemical Industries, Ltd.

- the active ingredients of the ink shown in Figure 5 were mixed with water, and coarse particles were removed from the resulting mixture to obtain an aqueous ink.
- the surface energy of the aqueous ink is 28 mN/m.
- FIG. 6 is a table showing the relative ratio of material prices of the films of levels 1 to 4, surface energy, difference in surface energy from water-based ink, change in mass as a result of Experimental Example 1, and change in hardness.

- Control system configuration 10 is a block diagram showing the configuration of a control system of the ink supply device 10.
- the ink supply device 10 includes a processor 70, a memory 72, a pump control unit 74, and a valve control unit 76.
- the processor 70 executes instructions stored in the memory 72 and performs overall control of the ink supply device 10.
- the hardware structure of the processor 70 is made up of various processors as shown below.
- the various processors include a CPU (Central Processing Unit), which is a general-purpose processor that executes software (programs) and functions as various functional units, a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), which is a processor specialized for image processing, a PLD (Programmable Logic Device), which is a processor whose circuit configuration can be changed after manufacture such as an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), and a dedicated electrical circuit, such as an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), which is a processor with a circuit configuration designed specifically to perform specific processing.
- a CPU Central Processing Unit
- GPU Graphics Processing Unit
- PLD Programmable Logic Device
- ASIC Application Specific Integrated Circuit
- a single processing unit may be configured with one of these various processors, or may be configured with two or more processors of the same or different types (for example, multiple FPGAs, or a combination of a CPU and an FPGA, or a combination of a CPU and a GPU).
- Multiple functional units may also be configured with a single processor. Examples of multiple functional units configured with a single processor include, first, a form in which one processor is configured with a combination of one or more CPUs and software, as typified by client or server computers, and this processor acts as multiple functional units. Second, a form in which a processor is used to realize the functions of an entire system including multiple functional units on a single IC (Integrated Circuit) chip, as typified by SoCs (System On Chips). In this way, the various functional units are configured as a hardware structure using one or more of the various processors listed above.
- the hardware structure of these various processors is, more specifically, an electrical circuit that combines circuit elements such as semiconductor devices.
- Memory 72 stores instructions to be executed by processor 70.
- Memory 72 includes RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read Only Memory), not shown.
- Processor 70 uses RAM as a working area, executes software using various programs and parameters stored in ROM, and performs various processes of ink supply device 10 by using parameters stored in ROM, etc.
- the pump control unit 74 controls the supply pump 20 based on a control signal sent from the processor 70.
- the valve control unit 76 controls the opening and closing of the supply valve 14, drain valve 30, air connect valve 34, and air valve 40 based on control signals sent from the processor 70.
- the ink supply device 10 controls the operation of the supply pump 20 based on pressure information within the supply flow path 12 (see Figure 1) obtained from the pressure sensor 16, so that the internal pressure of the supply flow path 12 is adjusted to a predetermined pressure.
- the supply subtank 18 of the ink supply device 10 may experience changes in the amount of deformation (amount of deflection) of the flexible membrane 22 over time. If the amount of deflection of the flexible membrane 22 changes, variations in the pressure control of the supply flow path 12 occur. Therefore, adjustment of the initial amount of deflection of the flexible membrane 22 is performed as appropriate to avoid variations in the pressure control of the supply flow path 12. Examples of times when adjustment of the initial amount of deflection of the flexible membrane 22 is performed include when the ink supply device 10 is started up, after a so-called pressure purge of the inkjet head 50 is performed, and when the pressure in the supply flow path 12 changes significantly due to an abnormality in the supply pump 20, etc.
- FIG 11 is a flowchart showing the process for adjusting the initial deflection amount of the flexible membrane 22 in the ink supply device 10.
- the processor 70 controls the valve control unit 76 to close the supply valve 14. This causes the supply flow path 12 and the inkjet head 50 to become disconnected.
- the processor 70 controls the valve control unit 76 to open the air connect valve 34 and the air valve 40. This opens the gas chamber 26 and the air tank 36 to the atmosphere.
- step S4 the processor 70 rotates the supply pump 20 in the forward direction to pressurize the liquid chamber 24 and send ink into the liquid chamber 24.
- the flexible membrane 22 deforms toward the gas chamber 26, and the amount of deformation increases over time.
- step S5 the processor 70 monitors the pressure detected by the pressure sensor 16 and determines whether the internal pressure of the supply flow path 12 has reached the designated pressure.
- the designated pressure is a predetermined pressure within a range in which the volume of the liquid chamber 24 and the pressure maintain a proportional relationship. If the pressure detected by the pressure sensor 16 has not reached the designated pressure, the processor 70 maintains the processing of step S5 and continues monitoring the pressure. On the other hand, if the pressure detected by the pressure sensor 16 has reached the designated pressure, the processor 70 proceeds to processing of step S6.
- step S6 the processor 70 reverses the supply pump 20 to reduce the pressure inside the liquid chamber 24, causing ink to flow out of the liquid chamber 24.
- the flexible membrane 22 which had been deformed toward the gas chamber 26, deforms toward the liquid chamber 24.
- the amount of deformation of the flexible membrane 22 is proportional to the amount of ink flowing out.
- step S7 the processor 70 monitors the time that has elapsed since the supply pump 20 was operated in the depressurization direction, and determines whether the specified time has elapsed. If the specified time has not elapsed since the start of depressurization, the processor 70 maintains the processing of step S7 and continues monitoring the time. On the other hand, if the specified time has elapsed since the start of depressurization, the processor 70 proceeds to processing of step S8.
- step S8 the processor 70 controls the valve control unit 76 to close the air valve 40. This causes the flexible membrane 22 to deform a predetermined amount in a direction that contracts the liquid chamber 24 in accordance with the amount of ink flowing out, adjusting it to a predetermined deflection. Finally, the processor 70 controls the valve control unit 76 to open the supply valve 14. This connects the supply flow path 12 to the inkjet head 50.

- the supply pump 20 is rotated forward to generate a negative pressure in the supply-side manifold 54
- the recovery pump 120 is rotated reversely to generate a negative pressure in the recovery-side manifold 154 that is lower than the pressure on the supply side.
- This causes ink to flow from the supply-side manifold 54 through the inkjet head 50 to the recovery-side manifold 154, and then circulates the ink via the recovery flow path 112, the recovery subtank 118, etc.
- bypass flow path valve 196 provided in the bypass flow path 192 can be opened to connect the supply side manifold 54 and the recovery side manifold 154 via the bypass flow path 192. - the conveying unit 208 also rotates the reel of the take-up roll 206 using a take-up motor, causing the printed substrate 202 to be wound onto the take-up roll 206.
- the conveying section 208 guides the substrate 202 delivered from the delivery roll 204 using multiple guide rollers 210, and conveys it through the treatment liquid application section 220, the treatment liquid drying section 222, the image recording section 224, and the ink drying section 232 in that order.

Description

例えば、欧州ではPFAS(Per- and PolyFluoroAlkyl Substances)規制の対象物質として使用制限が強められており、積極的にフッ素ゴムを使用できなくなるリスクが高い。

<実験例2>

各種のプロセッサには、ソフトウェア(プログラム)を実行して各種の機能部として作用する汎用的なプロセッサであるCPU(Central Processing Unit)、画像処理に特化したプロセッサであるGPU(Graphics Processing Unit)、FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array)などの製造後に回路構成を変更可能なプロセッサであるPLD(Programmable Logic Device)、ASIC(Application Specific Integrated Circuit)などの特定の処理を実行させるために専用に設計された回路構成を有するプロセッサである専用電気回路などが含まれる。
メモリ72は、不図示のRAM(Random Access Memory)、及びROM(Read Only Memory)を含む。
