Description

フェルール
 本発明は、光コネクタを構成する部材であるフェルールに関する。このフェルールを用いた光コネクタについても言及する。
 本願は、2024年3月13日に、日本に出願された特願2024-038888号に基づき優先権を主張し、その内容をここに援用する。
 フェルールの一種として、特許文献1に記載されるようなレンズフェルールが知られている。レンズフェルールには、光ファイバが取り付けられ、取り付けられた光ファイバの前方にレンズが位置する。
 レンズフェルールにおいて、固定したファイバからレンズまでの距離は光学特性の高効率化に重要である。特許文献1に記載のように、光ファイバを円柱の空洞部に突き当たるまで挿入することで距離のばらつきを抑えることが多い。
米国特許出願公開第2020/0209490号明細書
 上述した光ファイバの取り付けの際は、空洞部と光ファイバとの隙間が接着剤により埋められる。この時に気泡が残留すると、光学特性の悪化の一因となる。
 発明者は、気泡が残留しにくい構造について検討を重ね、本発明を完成させた。
 本発明は、光ファイバを突き当てて取り付ける空洞部を有しつつ、空洞部と光ファイバとの隙間を接着剤で埋める際に気泡が残留しにくいフェルールを提供することを目的とする。
 本発明の第1の態様は、複数の光ファイバが取り付けられるフェルールであって、前面と、前記前面より後ろ側に突き当て面を有し、前記突き当て面から後方に延びて後端が開口する第一穴を備えるフェルール前部と、前記第一穴の後ろ側に前記第一穴と略同軸に位置する第二穴を備えるフェルール中部と、前記第一穴と前記第二穴との間に位置し、接着剤が充填される内部空間を有する封止部と、を備え、前記第一穴は、内周面に前記封止部内に連通するスリットを有している。
 本発明によれば、光ファイバを突き当てて取り付ける空洞部を有しつつ、空洞部と光ファイバとの隙間を接着剤で埋める際に気泡が残留しにくいフェルールを提供できる。

 本発明の第一実施形態について、図1から図5を参照して説明する。
 図1は、本実施形態に係るフェルール1を示す斜視図である。本実施形態に係るフェルール1は、光コネクタを構成する部品であり、樹脂を用いた一体成型により形成されている。
 図2は、フェルール1を前方から見た図である。フェルール1は、図2に示すように、前面10に複数のレンズ11からなる光学部15を有し、いわゆるレンズフェルールとして構成されている。
 図1に示すように、フェルール1は、後部に開口20を有する。フェルール1に取り付けられる複数の光ファイバは、開口20から挿入される。
 以降の説明において、前面10と開口20とを結ぶ方向を前後方向、複数のレンズ11が並ぶ方向を左右方向、左右方向及び前後方向と直交する方向を上下方向、とそれぞれ称することがある。
 図3に、フェルール1を側方から見た状態の透過図を示す。光ファイバが通される空洞は、前側に位置する第一穴31と、後側に位置する第二穴40とを有する。つまり、フェルール1は、第一穴31を備えるフェルール前部1aと、第二穴40を備えるフェルール中部1bと、を含む。
 図4は、フェルール1を上方から見た状態の部分透過図である。第二穴40は、フェルール1の左右方向に並んだ状態で前後方向に延びる貫通穴であり、断面形状は円形である。第二穴40の後端は、すべて開口20内に開いており、第二穴40と開口20とが連通している。
 複数の第二穴40の一つ一つに対応する形で、略円柱状の第一穴31が第二穴40の前方に形成されており、第一穴31と第二穴40とが概ね同軸となっている。さらに、第一穴31の一つ一つに対応する形で、レンズ11が第一穴31の前方に位置しており、第一穴31の中心軸とレンズ11の光軸とが概ね一致している。第一穴31の中心軸と第二穴40の中心軸とは概ね一致しているため、第二穴40に通した光ファイバを前進させると、第一穴31に向かって進めることができる。
 第一穴31は、フェルール1の前後方向に延びる非貫通状態の穴であり、図3に示すように、最もレンズ11に近い前端部に突き当て面32を有する。本実施形態の突き当て面32は、戻り光を低減するために第一穴31の軸線に対してわずかに傾いているが、これは必須ではなく、第一穴31の軸線に垂直とすることもできる。
 図3に示すように、第一穴31と第二穴40との間の部位は、上下方向に貫通する封止部50となっている。封止部50内の内部空間には、第一穴31に光ファイバが取り付けられた後に接着剤が充填される。封止部50内には、第一穴31の後端部と第二穴40の前端部が開口している。
 本実施形態に係るフェルール1においては、第一穴31の後側に加え、第一穴31の上側の一部も封止部50内に開口している。
 より具体的には、封止部50内の内部空間の一部が第一穴31の後側開口よりも前側かつ上側まで存在することにより、図5に拡大して示すように、第一穴31の内周面に封止部50の内部空間と連通するスリット33が形成されている。スリット33は、一定の幅で第一穴31の軸線に概ね平行に延び、突き当て面32よりも後の位置で終わっている。
 フェルール1に光ファイバを取り付ける際は、開口20に光ファイバを差し込んで第二穴40に通す。第二穴40から突出した光ファイバは、封止部50内の空間を通って対応する第一穴31に挿入される。
 光ファイバを前進させて光ファイバの先端面を突き当て面32に接触させた状態で、光透過性を有する接着剤を封止部50内に充填する。接着剤は、第一穴31内にも流入して光ファイバと第一穴31との隙間を埋め、接着剤が硬化することにより、光ファイバがフェルール1に対して固定される。
 その後、各部に必要な工程を施すと、フェルール1を用いた光コネクタが完成する。
 特許文献1に記載のような従来のレンズフェルールでは、光ファイバが突き当てられる穴は、ファイバが挿入される後側の開口しか開放されていない。このため、後側の開口から穴の内部に進入した接着剤が隙間を十分埋めることができず、穴内に気泡が残留する現象が一定の頻度で発生していた。気泡内の空気は、光ファイバ、接着剤、およびフェルールの材質のいずれとも屈折率が大きく異なるため、気泡が残留すると、コネクタの光学特性が低下することが問題であった。
 発明者は、接着剤が穴内に流入する際に、隙間に存在している空気の唯一の出口をふさいでいることが気泡の残留に大きく関与していることに着目した。そして、突き当て面32を有する第一穴31にスリット33を形成し、光ファイバが挿入される後方の開口だけでなく側方の一部も開放することで、接着剤に押される空気の逃げ道を増やす構成に想到した。その結果、流入する接着剤に押された空気を円滑に第一穴31外に逃がすことができ、隙間内をまんべんなく接着剤で埋めて気泡の残留をほぼゼロにすることに成功した。
 光コネクタの光学特性上は、光ファイバが挿入される穴の中心軸と、挿入される光ファイバの中心軸とが一致しているのが理想であるが、上述した工程を踏まえると、穴の内径と光ファイバの外径とを同一とすることは実際には不可能であり、穴の内径を光ファイバの外径よりも大きくする必要がある。
 穴の内径と光ファイバの外径との差を小さくすることで、両者の中心軸のずれを小さくすることができるが、隙間に存在する空気は穴の外に逃げにくくなるため、気泡は残留しやすくなる。
 本実施形態に係るフェルール1では、第一穴31内に接着剤が流入した際にスリット33からも空気が逃げられるため、第一穴31の内径と光ファイバの外径との差を従来のレンズフェルールより小さくしても気泡が残留しにくい。その結果、気泡の残留を抑制しつつ、第一穴31に挿入される光ファイバの位置決め精度も高く保てるという優れた効果を奏する。
 本発明の第二実施形態について、図6から図8を参照して説明する。以降の説明において、既に説明した構成と共通する構成については、同一の符号を付して重複する説明を省略する。
 図6に、本実施形態に係るフェルール101を示す。フェルール101は、第一実施形態に係るフェルール1と若干形状が異なっているものの、光学部15、第一穴131を備えるフェルール前部101a、第二穴40を備えるフェルール中部101b、封止部50等を備えており、その基本構造は概ね同様である。
 フェルール101における特徴は、図7に拡大して示すように、第一穴131に設けられたスリット133が、第一穴131の軸線方向全体にわたって、すなわち突き当て面132に達するまで延びている点である。言い換えると、第一穴131の上方は、軸線方向の全体において開放され、封止部の内部空間と連通している。
 本実施形態に係るフェルール101も、第一実施形態に係るフェルール1と同様の効果を奏するが、フェルール101においては、特に気泡が残留しやすい突き当て面132付近の空気がスリット133から第一穴131の外に逃げやすいため、気泡の残留をさらに低減できるという利点がある。
 一方で、本実施形態では、スリット133が設けられた第一穴131の上側においては、光ファイバの移動を規制する構造物が存在しないため、第一穴内において光ファイバがスリットのある方向に動きやすくなる可能性がある。
 これを踏まえて、発明者がスリットの寸法と第一穴131内における光ファイバのずれとの関係について検討した結果を以下に示す。
 スリット133の設定幅が異なる3種類のフェルール101を、樹脂成型により各種類について3つずつ作製した。各フェルール101は36個の第一穴131を有するため、各設定幅について108個ずつの第一穴が準備された。
 設定幅は、第一穴131の直径の40%、50%、および60%の3種類とした。以降の説明において、図8に示すスリット幅aと第一穴131の直径bとの比a/bを、スリット133の「開口率」と定義する。
 実際に作製されたフェルール101において、各々の第一穴131におけるスリット133の開口率は、概ね設定幅に対応する値を中心として大小の両方向にばらつくため、各々の第一穴131のスリット133の幅を実測して各々の第一穴131における開口率を算出した。
 その後、各第一穴131に光ファイバを挿入して突き当て面132に接触させ、接着剤で固定した後、第一穴131内に固定された光ファイバの断面像を取得して各第一穴131における中心軸のずれ量を、スリット133のない左右方向(x方向)およびスリット133のある上下方向(y方向)でそれぞれ測定した。
 第一穴131の内径が光ファイバの外径よりも大きいことにより、従来構造のように全くスリットが無い場合でも、中心軸のずれ量はゼロにはならず、一定のずれが生じる。
 発明者の上記検討の結果では、スリット133の開口率が0.5未満であると、中心軸のずれ量は全くスリットが無い場合と同等であった。開口率が0.5以上0.6未満であると、y方向のずれ量がわずかに増加したが、完成した光コネクタの光学特性には影響しない程度であった。開口率が0.6以上になると、y方向のずれ量がさらに増加し、完成した光コネクタの光学特性にも影響が出ると推測された。
 実際のずれ量は、第一穴131の内径と光ファイバの外径との差分や、使用する接着剤等により異なるため、開口率が0.6以上になることで直ちに第一穴131に対する光ファイバの位置決め精度が低下する訳ではないが、スリットの開口率は0.6未満が好ましく、0.5未満がより好ましいことが上記検討から明らかになった。
 以上、本発明の各実施形態について図面を参照して詳述したが、具体的な構成はこの実施形態に限られず、本発明の要旨を逸脱しない範囲の構成の変更、組み合わせなども含まれる。以下にいくつかの変形例を例示するが、これらはすべてではなく、それ以外の変更も可能である。これらの変更はどの実施形態にも適用でき、2以上適宜組み合わされてもよい。
 本発明に係るフェルールは、光学部が一体成型されたフェルールには限られない。例えば、複数のレンズを有する光学プレートが別途フェルールに接合されることにより光学部が形成されてもよい。ただし、実施形態のように光学部が一体成型されたフェルールは、レンズと第一穴との位置関係における精度を高くしやすい点で優れている。
 本発明に用いられる接着剤は、透明であればよいが、フェルールおよび光ファイバのいずれかに近い屈折率を有することが好ましい。接着剤が光ファイバに近い屈折率を有していると、光ファイバの先端面と突き当て面との接触が十分でなかった場合にその隙間を埋めることで、先端面と突き当て面とが完全に接触したのとほぼ同様の状態とすることも可能である。
 封止部の内部空間の形状において、スリットの上方は必ずしも完全に開放されていなくてもよい。例えば、スリットの上方に一定距離離れた位置でフェルールの一部がスリットを覆っていてもよい。この場合、第一穴から逃げた空気の一部が覆いの下にたまる可能性があるが、第一穴外に気泡が存在しても光コネクタの光学特性に影響はないため、問題ない。
 本発明に係るフェルールを作製する際は、全体を透明な樹脂で形成することが簡便であるが、機能上は突き当て面と光学部との間の部位が光透過性を有していればよい。したがって、光透過性を有する樹脂と有色等により不透過性の樹脂とを用いた2色成型等によりフェルールが形成されてもよい。
 本発明に係るスリットは、必ずしも一続きである必要はなく、断続的に複数形成されてもよい。

Claims (4)

  1.  複数の光ファイバが取り付けられるフェルールであって、
     前面と、
     前記前面より後ろ側に突き当て面を有し、前記突き当て面から後方に延びて後端が開口する第一穴を備えるフェルール前部と、
     前記第一穴の後ろ側に前記第一穴と略同軸に位置する第二穴を備えるフェルール中部と、
     前記第一穴と前記第二穴との間に位置し、接着剤が充填される内部空間を有する封止部と、
     を備え、
     前記第一穴は、内周面に前記封止部内に連通するスリットを有する、
     フェルール。
  2.  前記スリットは、前記突き当て面から前記後端までの全体にわたり形成されている、
     請求項1に記載のフェルール。
  3.  前記第一穴の断面形状が円形であり、前記スリットの幅aと前記断面形状の直径bとの比である前記スリットの開口率a/bが0.6未満である、
     請求項2に記載のフェルール。
  4.  複数のレンズを有する光学部を前記前面に備える、
     請求項1に記載のフェルール。
