Abstract
본 발명은, 다공성 확산막 및 이를 포함하는 수전해 시스템에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 다공성 확산막은 다공성막의 일면 또는 양면의 일부분에 불소계 수지 영역을 포함하는 다공성막을 포함할 수 있다.
Description
본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른 다공성 확산막 및 이를 포함하는 수전해 시스템에 관한 것이다.
수전해 기술은 친환경적 에너지원을 통해 생성된 전기에너지를 고에너지 밀도를 지닌 수소 또는 탄소화합물 가스 등으로 전환하는 기술이다. 즉, 수전해 기술은 물을 전기 화학적인 수전해 반응에 의해 전기분해하여 수소를 생산하는 기술이다. 수전해 반응에서 수소 발생 반응(Hydrogen Evolution Reaction, HER) 및 산소 발생 반응(Oxygen Evolution Reaction, OER)을 위해서 효율적인 전극 촉매가 필요하다. 수전해 반응에 의한 수소 생산의 핵심은 물을 전기분해하여 수소와 산소를 생성하는 기술에 해당되지만, 물분해 특성상 수용액에서 반응이 진행되기 때문에 상(phase)이 다른 가스가 발생할 시에 전극 표면에서 분리되지 않는 가스가 존재할 수 있다(도 2a를 참조). 이러한 분리되지 않은 가스가 전극에 붙어 전극의 표면적 및 가스 생산 촉매반응 활성부위를 감소시켜 효율을 저하시킬 수 있다.
일반적으로 수전해 시스템(예: AEMWE(Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis) cell)에서는 물의 전기분해를 통해 수소와 산소가 발생하기 때문에, 셀 내부에는 액체상(예: 물 또는 전해질)과 기체상(예: 수소 또는 산소)이 존재한다. 이 과정에서, 생성물인 수소/산소 기체가 촉매층(MEA)과 다공성 확산막(PTL; porous transport layer) 사이에 쌓일 수 있다. 기체방울(즉, 버블)이 촉매층(MEA)/다공성 확산막(PTL) 사이에 축적되는 경우, 반응물(예: 물, 전해질)이 촉매와 닿는 면적이 감소(즉, 촉매 불활성 면적의 증가)하여, 과전압(overpotential)이 생겨 수전해 효율을 감소시키는 원인이 될 수 있다.
이에 일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, 언급된 문제점을 해결하기 위해서, 셀 내부의 생성물인 수소/산소 기체들을 촉매층(즉, MEA)에서 빠르게 제거시켜 셀 효율을 향상시킬 수 있는, 다공성 확산막을 제공하는 것이다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, 본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른, 다공성 확산막의 제조방법을 제공하는 것이다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, 본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른, 다공성 기제 확산막; 및 막전극 접합체; 를 포함하는, 수전해 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.
그러나, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는 이상에서 언급한 것들로 제한되지 않으며, 언급되지 않은 또 다른 과제들은 아래의 기재로부터 해당 분야 통상의 기술자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있을 것이다.
실시 예들에 따른, 다공성 확산막은 다공성막의 일면 또는 양면의 일부분에 불소계 수지 영역을 포함하는 다공성막; 을 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 다공성막은, 단일층 또는 복수층을 포함하고, 상기 다공성막의 복수층 중 적어도 하나 이상이 불소계 수지 영역을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 다공성막은, 하부층; 및 상기 하부층 상에 불소계 수지 영역을 갖는 상부층; 을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 다공성막은, 금속, 산화물, 합금, 폴리머, 실리콘, 유리, 석영 및 탄소계 물질 중 적어도 하나 이상을 포함하는 폼, 직조물, 펠트 또는 부직포인 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 다공성막의 두께는, 50 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 1000㎛(마이크로미터)이고, 다공도는 70 % 이상인 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지 영역은, 다각형, 밴드, 선, 원형, 타원형, 도트 또는 메쉬 형태의 패턴을 갖는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지 영역은, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 테트라플루오로에틸렌-퍼플루오로알킬비닐에테르 공중합체(PFA), 테트라플루오르에틸렌-헥사플루오르프로필렌 공중합체(FEP), 에틸렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 코폴리머 수지(ETFE), 테트라플루오로에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 공중합체(TFE/CTFE), 에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 수지(ECTFE), 플루오르화 에틸렌-프로필렌 공중합체, 퍼플루오로 알콕시 중합체 및 폴리클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 중 적어도 하나 이상 또는 이들의 조합을 포함하는 불소계 수지를 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지 영역이 두께는 40 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 800 ㎛(마이크로미터)이고, 상기 불소계 수지 영역은 상기 다공성막 일면의 면적 기준으로 0 % 초과 내지 90 %인 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지 영역은, 상기 다공성막 상에 불소계 수지의 코팅 이후에 350 ℃ 내지 450 ℃ 온도에서 열처리된 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지 영역은, 70 % 이상의 다공도를 갖는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지 영역은, 수소 또는 산소에 대한 표면 접촉각이 20 도(°) 이하이고, 물에 대한 표면 접촉각이 100 도(°) 이상이며, 상기 불소계 수지 영역이 형성되지 않은 다공성막의 영역은, 수소 또는 산소에 대한 표면 접촉각이 100 도(°) 이상이고, 물에 대한 표면 접촉각이 10 도(°) 이하인 것일 수 있다.
실시 예들에 따른, 수전해 시스템은, 전해질막; 및 상기 전해질막의 양면에 촉매층을 포함하는 막전극 접합체; 및 상기 막전극 접합체의 일면 또는 양면에 제1항의 다공성 확산막; 을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 다공성 확산막에서 상기 막전극 접합체로 향하는 면은 불소계 수지 영역이 프리한 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 수전해 시스템은, 음이온 교확막 수전해 시스템인 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, 셀 내부의 생성물인 수소/산소 기체들을 촉매층(즉, MEA)에서 빠르게 제거시켜 과전압(예: 옴 저항(ohmic overpotential), 물질 전달 저항(mass transport overpotential))을 낮추고, 수전해 효율을 향상시킬 수 있는, 다공성 확산막 및 이를 포함하는 수전해 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.
도 1은 본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른, 다공성 확산막(10)의 구성을 예시적으로 나타낸 것이다.

도 1은 본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른, 다공성 확산막(10)의 구성을 예시적으로 나타낸 것으로, 도 1에서 다공성 확산막(10)은 다공성막(110)을 포함하고, 다공성막(110)의 일면 또는 양면의 일부분에 불소계 수지 영역(120)을 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 다공성막(110)은 단일층 또는 복수층을 포함하고, 다공성막(110)이 복수층일 경우에 복수층 중 적어도 하나 이상에 불소계 수지 영역(120)을을 포함할 수 있다. 어떤 실시 예에서 복수층의 모두에 불소계 수지 영역(120)을 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 다공성막(110)은 하부층(110a) 및 하부층(110a) 상에 배치되고, 불소계 수지 영역(120)을 갖는 상부층(110b); 를 포함할 수 있다. 상부층(110b)의 일면의 적어도 일부분에 불소계 수지 영역(120)을 포함할 수 있다.

일 실시 예에 따라, 다공성막(110)에서 기공의 크기는 0.01 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 800 ㎛(마이크로미터)일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 다공성막(110)의 표면은 평평한 표면, 도출되거나 오목한 요철에 의한 표면 거칠기를 갖거나 텍스쳐링된 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 다공성막(110)의 적어도 일부분에 형성되는 것으로, 2b를 참조하면, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 촉매층에서 발생되는 기체(수소 및 산소)의 확산을 촉진시키고, 초소수성(superhydrophobic) 및 호기성(aerophilic) 특성을 제공하며, 불소계 수지 영역(120)이 형성되지 않은 다공성막(110)의 일부분은 친수성(hydrophilic) 및 혐기성(aerophobic)을 나타내거 물에 대한 젖음성이 좋고, 반응에 이용되는 물의 공급을 원활하게 진행시킬 수 있다. 이는 기체를 빠르게 제거하여 촉매층 상에 기체 버블에 의한 비활성 면적이 증가되는 것을 방지하고, 촉매 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다. 즉, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 "Janus wettability"를 갖는 다공성 확산막을 구현할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 다공성막(110) 표면에서 다양한 형태로 형성하는 것으로, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 다각형, 밴드, 선, 원형, 타원형, 도트 또는 메쉬 형태의 패턴으로 형성될 수 있다. 어떤 실시 예에서 특정 영역에서 밴드 형태, 원형, 다각형 또는 선 형태의 패턴으로 형성될 수 있다. 어떤 실시 예에서 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 특정 영역에 국한되어 형성되거나 분산되어 형성될 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 테트라플루오로에틸렌-퍼플루오로알킬비닐에테르 공중합체(PFA), 테트라플루오르에틸렌-헥사플루오르프로필렌 공중합체(FEP), 에틸렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 코폴리머 수지(ETFE), 테트라플루오로에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 공중합체(TFE/CTFE), 에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 수지(ECTFE), 플루오르화 에틸렌-프로필렌 공중합체, 퍼플루오로 알콕시 중합체 및 폴리클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 중 적어도 하나 이상 또는 이들의 조합을 포함하는 불소계 수지를 포함할 수 있다. 바람직하게는 상기 불소계 수지는 PTFE일 수 있다. 상기 불소계 수지는 초소수성(Superhydrophobicity), 열 안정성(Thermal stability) 및/또는 화학적 안정성(chemical stability)을 갖는 것일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 불소계 수지의 분자량(수평균 분자량)은, 1,000,000 내지 15,000,000 g/mol; 2,000,000 내지 15,000,000 g/mol; 3,000,000 내지 10,000,000 g/mol; 또는 4,000,000 내지 5,000,000 g/mol일 수 있다. 이러한 분자량 범위를 적용하여 다양한 소재 또는 구조의 다공성막 상에 코팅이 잘 이루어지고, 기체 확산을 촉진시킬 수 있는 표면 특성을 제공할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)의 두께는, 40 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 800 ㎛(마이크로미터); 40 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 600 ㎛(마이크로미터); 40 ㎛(마이크로미터) ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 500 ㎛(마이크로미터); 60 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 200 ㎛(마이크로미터); 또는 50 ㎛(마이크로미터) ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 100 ㎛(마이크로미터)일 수 있다. 언급된 두께 범위를 적용하여 촉매층에서 생성되는 기체의 확산을 빠르게 진행시시키고, 촉매 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라 불소계 수지 영역(120)의 면적은, 상기 다공성막 일면의 면적 기준으로 0 % 초과 내지 100 % 미만; 10 % 내지 100 % 미만; 30 % 내지 90 %; 30 % 내지 80 %; 또는 30 % 내지 50 %; 일 수 있다. 바람직하게는 30 % 내지 60 %일 수 있다. 언급된 범위를 적용하여 낮은 압력에서 촉매층에서 생성된 기체를 빠르게 제거하고, 촉매층 내로 물의 공급을 원활하게 진행할 수 있는 다공성 확산막을 제공할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 50 ℃ 내지 300 ℃ 온도; 70 ℃ 내지 280 ℃; 100 ℃ 내지 250 ℃; 150 ℃ 내지 250 ℃ 또는 200 ℃ 내지 250 ℃ 온도의 다공성막(110) 상에 불소계 수지의 코팅막을 형성한 이후에 100 ℃ 내지 400 ℃; 150 ℃ 내지 450 ℃; 200 ℃ 내지 450 ℃; 250 ℃ 내지 450 ℃; 300 ℃ 내지 400 ℃ 또는 바람직하게는 350 ℃ 내지 450 ℃ 온도 및 1분 내지 30분; 5분 내지 20분; 또는 5 분 내지 10 분 동안동안 열처리된 것일 수 있다. 언급된 공정으로 열처리한 이후에 불소계 수지 영역의 안정적으로 다공성 막 상에 코팅막을 형성하고, 빠른 기체 확산을 유도할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은, 기체(예: 수소, 산소 또는 에어)에 대한 표면 접촉각이 20도(°) 이하; 15도 이하; 10 도 이하; 또는 9 도 이하이고, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 물에 대한 표면 접촉각이 100 도 이상; 120 도 이상; 140도 이상인 것일 수 있다. 이는 다공성막(110)의 표면 에너지 또는 표면 특성에 의해서 촉매층에서 발생되는 가스(예: 수소 또는 산소)를 신속하게 배출시켜 막전극접합체의 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 도 2a 및 도 2b는 촉매층 및 다공성 확산막 간의 가스 버블의 흐름을 나타낸 것으로, 도 2a에서 불소계 수지 영역(120)이 형성되지 않은 종래의 다공성 확산막(Conventional PTL)이 적용된 것이다. 도 2a에서 MEA 표면의 전기촉매로부터 생성된 기체가 쉽게 빠져나오지 못하고 다공성 확산막 간에 축적되고, 가스 버블에 의해 비활성 촉매 영역이 형성되는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 도 2b에서 불소계 수지 영역(120)이 형성된 다공성 확산막(즉, Janus PTL)이 적용되며, MEA 표면의 전기촉매에서 생성된 수소 및 산소 기체가 다공성 확산막을 통해 쉽게 빠져나와 전체적인 수전해 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.
일 실시 에에 따라, 불소계 수지 영역(120)은 다공성막(110)과 동일한 다공도를 갖거나 60 % 이상; 70 % 이상; 80 % 또는 90 % 이상의 다공도를 갖는 것일 수 있다. 이러한 다공도는 불소계 수지 영역(120)의 전체 면적으로 기준으로 기공 면적에 관련된 것일 수 있다.

일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, 다공성 확산막(예: 도 1의 다공성 확산막(10))의 제조방법을 제공할 수 있다. 상기 제조방법은, 다공성막을 준비하는 단계; 및 상기 다공성막 상에 불소계 수지를 코팅하는 단계; 및 상기 코팅하는 단계 이후에 열처리하는 단계; 를 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 다공성막을 준비하는 단계는 도 1의 다공성 확산막(10)의 설명에서 언급된 다공성 확산막(10)에 적용되는 다공성막(110)을 준비할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 코팅하는 단계는 불소계 수지 20 중량% 이상; 30 중량% 이상; 40 중량%; 50 중량% 이상 또는 60 중량% 이상을 포함하는 코팅액을 이용하여 코팅할 수 있다. 상기 코팅액은 불소계 수지 용해 또는 분산시킬 수 있는 용제라면 제한 없이 적용될 수 있다. 상기 코팅하는 단계는 스핀 코팅, 분사 코팅 등을 이용할 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 따라, 코팅하는 단계는 원하는 부위 또는 원하는 패턴 형태에 따라 다공성막 상에 마스크를 형성한 이후 코팅 공정을 진행할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 코팅하는 단계는 다공성막을 50 ℃ 내지 300 ℃ 온도; 70 ℃ 내지 280 ℃; 100 ℃ 내지 250 ℃; 150 ℃ 내지 250 ℃ 또는 200 ℃ 내지 250 ℃ 온도에서 예열한 이후에 코팅 공정을 진행할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 열처리하는 단계는 100℃ 내지 400 ℃; 150 ℃ 내지 450 ℃; 200 ℃ 내지 450 ℃; 250 ℃ 내지 450 ℃; 300 ℃ 내지 400 ℃; 또는 바람직하게는 350 ℃ 내지 450 ℃ 온도에서 1분 내지 30분; 5분 내지 20분; 또는 5 분 내지 10 분 동안 열처리(예: 어닐링)할 수 있으며, 이러한 열처리(예: 어닐링)에서 분위기는 비활성 기체, 산소 등을 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 열처리를 통해 불소계 수지막의 기계적 결착(interlocking) 및 결집(agglomeration)시켜 안정적인 코팅막을 형성할 수 있다. 상기 열처리하는 단계는 상기 코팅하는 단계 보다 높은 온도에서 진행될 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명의 다공성 확산막은 연료전지 또는 수전해 시스템에 적용될 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 다공성 확산막은 막전극 접합체에 접합되어 연료전지 또는 수전해 시스템에 적용될 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 도 3은 본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른, 수전해 시스템(200)의 구성을 나타낸 것으로, 수전해 시스템(200)은, 막전극 접합체(210, MEA; Membrane Electrode Assembly), 다공성 확산층(210a, 210b, PTL; porous transport layer), 가스켓(230a, 230b), 바이폴라 플레이트(240a, 240b), 엔드 플레이트(250a, 250b))를 포함할 수 있다. 도 3에서 수전해 시스템(200)은 수전해 시스템의 단일셀(Single cell)구성에 해당될 수 있다. 막전극 접합체(210, MEA; Membrane Electrode Assembly), 가스켓(230a, 230b), 바이폴라 플레이트(240a, 240b), 엔드 플레이트(250a, 250b)는 본 발명의 기술 분야에서 알려진 구성을 적용할 수 있으며, 본 문서에는 구체적으로 언급하지 않는다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 막전극 접합체(210)는 멤브레인(즉, 전해질막) 및 상기 멤브레인의 양면에 촉매층을 포함하고, 막전극 접합체(210)의 일면 또는 양면에 본 발명의 실시 예들에 따른, 다공성 확산층(210a, 210b)(예: 다공성 확산막(10))을 포함할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 다공성 확산층(210a, 210b)는, 막전극 접합체(210)로 향하는 면이 불소계 수지 영역(120)을 포함하지 않을 수 있으며, 막전극 접합체(210)와 접촉하지 않는 다공성 확산층(210a, 210b)의 면에 불소계 수지 영역을 포함할 수 있다. 즉, 막전극 접합체(210)로 향하거나 접하는 다공성 확산층(210a, 210b)의 면에는 불소계 수지 영역(120)이 프리(free, 미포함) 할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 촉매층은, 연료전지 또는 수전해 시스템에 적용 가능한 전극 촉매라면 제한 없이 적용될 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 백금 촉매일 수 있다.
*57일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 전해질막은 연료전지 또는 수전해 시스템의 막전극 접합체에 적용 가능한 것이라면 제한 없이 적용될 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 상기 전해질막은 수전해 시스템에서 음이온 교확막일 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 상기 수전해 시스템은 음이온 교확막 수전해 시스템(AEMWE; Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis)이며, 다공성 확산층(210a, 210b)은 불소계 수지 영역(120)을 도입하여 수소/산소 기체들을 MEA에서 빠르게 제거시킬 수 있는, 비등방성 질량 수송(Anisotropic Mass Transport)을 위한 다공성 확산막일 수 있다.
이하, 실시예 및 비교예에 의하여 본 발명을 더욱 상세히 설명하고자 한다.
단, 하기 실시예는 본 발명을 예시하기 위한 것일 뿐, 본 발명의 내용이 하기 실시예에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
실시 예 1: Janus PTL의 제조
도 4에 나타낸 공정에 따라 Janus PTL를 제작하였다.
Pristine PTL(0.5 mm 두께의 NF(nickel foam)을 세척 및 건조하여 준비한 이후 PTFE 코팅이 필요한 부분을 고려하여 Pristine PTL 상의 일부분에 마스킹하고, 핫플레이트에서 250 ℃ (섭씨 온도)로 10분간 가열하였다. 다음으로, 60 wt% PTFE dispersion spray (air pressure: 1 bar, 0.3 mm nozzle size를 갖는 에어브러쉬 사용) 15 cm 높이에서 30초간 분사하여 한쪽면만 PTFE 코팅 진행하였다(즉, 마스킹 제외 부분). 다음으로, 380 ℃ (섭씨 온도)에서 10분간 열처리 진행할 수 있다.
도 5에서 Janus PTL의 SEM 이미지를 나타내었다. SEM 이미지에서 코팅면(top), 뒷면(bottom), 옆면(cross-section)을 확인했을 때, 한쪽면만 PTFE이 잘 코팅된 것을 확인할 수 있다. PTFE막의 두께는 약 150 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 200 ㎛(마이크로미터)이다.
도 6은 PTL의 기공 크기(Pore size)의 변화를 확인하기 위해 다공성(porosimetry) 분석을 진행하였다. 도 6에서 PTFE 코팅에 의해 포어크기가 약간 감소하였으나, 전체적인 분포에 크게 영향을 주지 않은 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 다공도(Porosity)도 비슷한 값을 보이는 것을 볼 수 있다(Pristine PTL: 79.94%, Janus PTL: 78.09%). 이는 Pristine PTL의 물리적인 구조에 큰 영향 없이 화학적으로 개질된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
실시 예 2
PTL로 1.6 mm 두께의 NF, 니켈 펠트(nickel felt), SUS 폼(foam)를 각각 실시 예 1과 동일한 방법으로 PTFE 코팅 공정으로 Janus PTL를 제작하였다.
도 7은 다른 구조 또는 다른 소재의 PTL(니켈폼(좌) 및 SUSU 폼(우))에 PTFE 코팅한 PTL의 SEM 이미지를 나타낸 것이다. 도 7에서 본 발명의 코팅 공정을 이용할 경우에 다양한 Pristine PTL 소재 및 구조에서 PTFE 코팅이 가능한 것을 확인할 수 있다.
실시 예 3
대면적 (225 cm2), 100 cm2 및 25 cm2 면적의 Pristine PTL(0.5 mm 두께의 NF(nickel foam)을 이용하여 실시 예 1과 동일한 공정으로 Janus PTL를 제작하였다. 모두 Pristine PTL 표면 상에 PTFE 코팅막이 형성된 것을 확인하였다. PTFE 코팅막의 면적은, Pristine PTL의 일면의 면적 중 약 50 % 내지 60 %에 해당된다.
실시 예 4
마스크의 형태를 변화시켜 다양한 모양을 갖는 PTFE 코팅막을 갖는 Janus PTL를 제작하였다. 코팅 공정은 실시 예 1과 도일하게 진행하였다. 도 8에 나타낸 바와 같이, Pristine PTL상에 원형, 팔각형, 삼각형 또는 스트라이프 패턴을 갖는 코팅막을 제작할 수 있다.
실시 예의 Janus PTL 및 Pristine PTL에 대한 물성을 평가하였다. 특별한 언급이 없으면 실시 예 1의 Janus PTL 및 Pristine PTL에 해당된다.
(1) 젖음성
Janus PTL의 수중 특성 확인
도 9를 살펴보면, Janus PTL(실시 예 1)을 물에 넣었을 때, 코팅한 면의 경우(Janus NF) 물에 젖지 않아 은색으로 반짝거리는 기체층을 가지고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있는 반면, 뒷면은(NF) 물에 젖은 것을 확인할 수 있다.
X-ray 분석을 통해서 Janus PTL 내부의 PTFE가 코팅된 파트에는 내부 가스 필름(gas film)이 존재하는 것을 추가적으로 확인할 수 있다.
Janus PTL의 정접촉각(static contact angle) 분석
도 10을 살펴보면, PTFE 코팅된 면에서는 초소수성(superhydrophobic) 및 호기성(aerophilic)을 보여주는 반면, 코팅되지 않은 Ni 폼 면에서는 물이 스며들고 기체에 대해 높은 접촉각을 보여 친수성(hydrophilic) 및 혐기성(aerophobic) 특성을 보여주는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
Pristine PTL 및 Janus PTL의 동적 접촉각 분석
도 11을 살펴보면, Pristine PTL의 경우 친수성을 가지고 있어 물이 표면에 딸려 올라가는 모세관 상승(capillary rise)이 양쪽에서 관찰된다. Janus PTL에서는 PTFE 코팅된 부분에서 물이 밀려 아래로 내려가는 것을 볼 수 있으며, 코팅 뒷면은 모세관 상승(capillary rise)이 관찰되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
이를 통해 PTFE가 한쪽면만 잘 코팅이 되었고, PTFE에 의해 가스 필름(gas film)이 형성되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
(2) Pristine PTL 및 Janus PTL의 물과 공기에 대한 투과성
수중에서 기체의 투과성 비교
도 12를 살펴보면, Pristine PTL의 경우 가스 버블(gas bubble)이 투과되지 못하고 밀어내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 하지만, Janus PTL에서는 Ni(코팅 뒷면)에서 PTFE/Ni(코팅면)으로 기체가 투과되는 것을 확인할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 도 12에서 아래 도면은 기체 투과 현상에 대한 모식도로서, Pristine PTL은 친수성 특성에 의해 모세관 압력(capillary pressure)이 버블(bubble)을 밀어내는 방향으로 작용하는 것을 확인할 수 있다. Janus PTL은 필름(gas film)과 가스 버블(gas bubble)이 닿으면서 채널(channel)을 형성하고, 라플라스 압력(Laplace pressure) 차이에 의해 투과가 일어나는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 13에서 Janus PTL(좌)에서 반대 방향(PTFE/Ni to Ni 방향)으로는 투과가 되지 않는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 13에서 Janus PTL(우)에 있는 가스 필름(gas film)을 제거한 뒤, 도 13의 좌(Pristine PTL)와 같은 방향으로 버블(bubble)을 주입했을 때 투과가 일어나지 않는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이를 통해 가스 필름(gas film)에 의해 버블(bubble gas)의 투과성이 생기는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
두 물질의 물 투과성(Water permeability)의 확인,
도 14에서 Pristine PTL(좌)의 경우 양쪽으로 잘 움직이는 반면 Janus PTL(우)의 경우 PTFE/Ni to Ni 방향으로만 투과되는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 물 투과성은 NF가 Janus NF 보다 크다.
보다 정량적인 분석을 위해 BPP(bubble point pressure)측정을 진행하였다. 도면에는 제시되지 않았으나, Pristine PTL의 BPP 및 Janus PTL은 기체방울이 보이는 시점을 BPP라고 하였으며, 기체 방울의 성장에서 다른 거동이 관찰되었다. 이는 도 15a에서 확인할 수 있다. 도 15a에서 Pristine PTL(NF)의 경우 기체방울이 불연속적인 성장하지만, Janus PTL의 경우 연속적으로 방울이 성장하는 것을 확인할 수 있다(도 15a에서 BPP 측정 조건: Syringe size : 1 mL, Compression speed : 0.2 μl/s)
도 15b에서 외부로 나온 기체 방울의 크기를 사용하여 내/외부 압력 차이를 그래프로 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있다. Pristine NF(니켈 폼)의 경우 약 1000 Pa정도의 높은 압력에서 버블이 배출되고, Janus NF의 경우 약 60 Pa 정도의 낮은 압력에서 버블이 배출되는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, Pristine NF은 불연속적, Janus NF는 연속적으로 버블이 배출된다.
도 15c에서 다른 구조, 소재로 이루어진 PTL에 대해서도 PTFE 코팅을 진행하였고(즉 실시 예 2), BPP 측정할 수 있다. 소재와 기공의 구조와 관계없이 BPP가 감소하는 것을 확인할 수 있다. sus 폼은 10 wt% PTFE 및 110 ℃ 어닐링 조건에서 코팅을 진행하였다.
도 16a 내지 16c는 BPP(bubble point pressure)에서 버블 부착성(bubble adhesion)를 측정하였다. 측정 조건은 "Needle size : 20 gage, Approach/retraction speed : 10 μm/s 및 Bubble diameter : 1 mm"이다.
도 16a에서 pristine NF에 대해 버블 부착성(bubble adhesion) 측정에서 Compression 하는 경우에도 bubble이 흡수되지 않으며, 약간의 adhesion이 관찰되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 16b에서 Janus NF에 대해 버블 부착성(bubble adhesion)에서 일정 힘(force) 이상으로 힘을 받는(compression) 경우 기체방울이 흡수되는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 16c에서 기체 방울이 흡수되는 힘을 접촉면적으로 나눠서 앞서 본 BPP와 비교하여 나타낸 것으로, Janus NF에서 비슷한 압력 값을 갖는 것을 통해 BPP 값의 측정이 잘 되었다는 것을 뒷받침할 수 있다.
AEMWE 수전해 전압/전류 그래프(Polarization curve)
도 17a에서 수전해 구동을 위해서 catalyst layer로서, OER 촉매를 NiFe, HER 촉매를 Pt/C로 사용하였고, Pristine PTL에 비해 Janus PTL의 경우 수전해 성능이 향상된 것을 확인할 수 있다.
AEMWE 수전해 임피던스 저항(EIS) 측정
도 17b에서 0.5 A/cm2 조건에서 임피던스 저항을 측정했을 때, Rmass 저항이 줄어드는 것을 확인하였다. Pristine PTL에서는 Semi circle이 2개 나오는 반면, Janus PTL에서는 두번째 Semi circle이 거의 없는 상태로 보아, Janus PTL은 Mass transport가 우수하다는 것을 임피던스 저항으로서 확인할 수 있다(도 17b에서 R1 : Activation loss, R3 : Mass transport resistance임).
AEMWE에서 성능 평가
도 18a는 PTL에 따른 성능을 평가한 것이다((Fixed Pt/C(HER)/NiFe(OER) electrocatalysts). 도 18b는 OER 전기촉매에 따른 성능을 평가한 것이다(Fixed NF to 500 um).
HER촉매 Pt/C, OER촉매 NiFe로 고정시킨 상태에서, PTL을 SUS foam, Ni felt, 1.5 mm 두께 Ni foam으로 사용했을 경우 모두 성능 향상을 관찰될 수 있다(도 18a)
수전해에서, HER촉매는 Pt/C로 고정시킨 상태에서, OER촉매를 IrO2, NiCo LDH, NiFe로 사용했을 경우 모두 성능 향상을 관찰될 수 있다(도 18b).
즉, 수전해 셀(Water electrolysis cell)에서 촉매의 종류 / PTL의 종류 상관 없이 모두 보편적으로 적용 가능한 것을 확인할 수 있다.
도 19에서 Pristine PTL(위)의 경우 버블 이스케이핑(bubble escaping)이 모든 위치에서 관찰되며, 불연속적인 것을 볼 수 있다. Janus PTL(아래)의 경우 PTFE 코팅된 부분에서 대부분의 버블 이스케이핑(bubble escaping)이 나타나며, 연속적으로 버블이 나오는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
HER촉매 Pt/C, OER촉매 NiFe를 사용한 경우에 3스택 셀에 적용한 결과.
앞서 single cell(단일셀)에서 성능 증가를 확인했고, 이를 대면적 스택셀에 적용했을 경우에도 효율 향상을 확인할 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, Janus wettability를 갖는 다공성 확산막(PTL; porous transport layer)을 불소계 수지(즉, PTFE)를 분사 코팅으로 쉽게 제조할 수 있다. 불소계 수지(즉, PTFE) 코팅은 큰 면적의 PTL에도 적용가능하고, 니켈(Ni)이나 스테인리스스틸(SUS) 등에도 코팅할 수 있으며, 다양한 모양(원형, 스트라이프 등)으로 코팅의 디자인이 자유롭게 가능할 수 있다. 불소계 수지(즉, PTFE) 코팅 후의 PTL의 경우, 수중에서 버블(bubble)이 투과되는 압력 (bubble point pressure)(=BPP)이 감소하며, 이는 AEMWE(anion exchange membrane water electrolysis cell)에 적용하여 수전해 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 본 발명은, 불소계 수지(즉, PTFE) 코팅을 통해 mass transportation overpotential 및 ohmic overpotential 감소시킬 수 있다. 즉, 야누스 젖음성(Janus wettability)를 갖는 PTL을 AEMWE에 적용했을 때 생성된 기체(산소, 수소)를 빠르게 제거하여 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.

- 제1항에 있어서,상기 다공성막의 두께는, 50 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 1000 ㎛(마이크로미터)이고, 다공도는 70 % 이상인 것인, 다공성 확산막.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 불소계 수지 영역은,다각형, 밴드, 선, 원형, 타원형, 도트 또는 메쉬 형태의 패턴을 갖는 것인,다공성 확산막.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 불소계 수지 영역은,폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 테트라플루오로에틸렌-퍼플루오로알킬비닐에테르 공중합체(PFA), 테트라플루오르에틸렌-헥사플루오르프로필렌 공중합체(FEP), 에틸렌-테트라플루오로에틸렌 코폴리머 수지(ETFE), 테트라플루오로에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 공중합체(TFE/CTFE), 에틸렌-클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 수지(ECTFE), 플루오르화 에틸렌-프로필렌 공중합체, 퍼플루오로 알콕시 중합체 및 폴리클로로트리플루오로에틸렌 중 적어도 하나 이상 또는 이들의 조합을 포함하는 불소계 수지를 포함하는 것인, 다공성 확산막.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 불소계 수지 영역이 두께는 40 ㎛(마이크로미터) 내지 800 ㎛(마이크로미터)이고,상기 불소계 수지 영역은 상기 다공성막의 일면의 면적 기준으로 0 % 초과 내지 90 %인 것인, 다공성 확산막.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 불소계 수지 영역은,상기 다공성막 상에 불소계 수지의 코팅 이후에 350℃ 내지 450℃ 온도에서 열처리된 것인, 다공성 확산막.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 불소계 수지 영역은, 70 % 이상의 다공도를 갖는 것인, 다공성 확산막.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 불소계 수지 영역은,수소 또는 산소에 대한 표면 접촉각이 20 도(°) 이하이고,물에 대한 표면 접촉각이 100 도(°) 이상이며,상기 불소계 수지 영역이 형성되지 않은 다공성막의 영역은,수소 또는 산소에 대한 표면 접촉각이 100 도(°) 이상이고,물에 대한 표면 접촉각이 10 도(°) 이하인 것인, 다공성 확산막.
- 전해질막; 및 상기 전해질막의 양면에 촉매층을 포함하는 막전극 접합체; 및상기 막전극 접합체의 일면 또는 양면에 제1항의 다공성 확산막;을 포함하는, 수전해 시스템.
- 제12항에 있어서,상기 다공성 확산막에서 상기 막전극 접합체로 향하는 면은 불소계 수지 영역이 프리한 것인, 수전해 시스템.
- 제12항에 있어서,상기 수전해 시스템은, 음이온 교확막 수전해 시스템인 것인, 수전해 시스템.
