Definitions
- the present invention refers to a connection device to join metal structures, such as the longitudinal joints of metal parapets, which are used as a vehicle containment system or for fences and railings, industrial equipment or other products in its range. , which can use the connection device of the invention to join longitudinal sections of the metal structures.
- the connection device of the invention manages to streamline the joints and also manages to ensure immobilization of the joints without requiring the use of welding, as is conventionally the case in some cases.
- connection device has the particularity of joining two elements without the union screws and nuts being seen from the outside with the aim of guaranteeing the rigidity of the union while taking care of the aesthetics of the profiles to be joined depending on their geometry.
- each joint is made by means of a connecting piece in combination with screws and nuts, so that the connecting piece It has holes aligned with other holes located in the adjacent end sections of longitudinal profiles that are part of the metal structures.
- the screws are inserted through the aligned holes and then the nuts are fitted with tightening on said screws, so that to strengthen the union and prevent the nuts from loosening or unscrewing, in some cases the nuts are immobilized to the connecting piece by means of one or several welding points.
- connection piece by piece connection in addition to being difficult to make, connection piece by piece connection, nut by nut, generate weaknesses in the materials, both in the nut and in the connection piece, generating weakened areas, which could cause breakage.
- connection pieces must be treated with chemical and anticorrosive products, capable of generating resistance to the environment in which they are installed, that is, to the elements. These chemical treatments also affect each nut and its weld, weakening it and causing breakage or weakness of the materials, which shortens its useful life.
- welding points generates points where the material can corrode and this corrosion can mechanically affect the connecting piece and, logically, can produce breakages and weakening.
- connection device for joining metal structures that comprises a connection piece in combination with screws and nuts.
- connection piece has first holes aligned with other second holes located in adjacent end sections of longitudinal profiles that are part of the metal structures to be joined.
- the connecting piece sits on coplanar surfaces of the two longitudinal profiles; where the screws are introduced through the first and second holes located in the longitudinal profiles, and then said screws are coupled to the nuts with tightening.
- Each of the nuts comprises a truncated conical annular projection integral with one of the two opposite faces of said nut; where said truncated conical annular projection is coaxial with the threaded hole of the nut; and where said truncated conical annular projection is configured to be embedded in the lateral surface that delimits the contour of the first hole of the connection piece.
- Each frustoconical annular projection of the nuts includes a grooved outer lateral surface, which achieves a much more effective rotational immobilization of the nut.
- the joining of the adjacent end sections of the two metal profiles is carried out in combination with a head that is part of a post; where the head includes third holes aligned with the first and second holes; and where the screws are introduced through the first, second and third holes located, respectively, in the longitudinal profiles and in the head of the post.
- each nut is embedded in the first hole of the connection piece by means of interlocking by means of pressure that prevents the nut from turning.
- the nuts have a hardening treatment to be able to fit into other steels.
- an anti-corrosion treatment is added with a durability of more than 1000 hours in a salt fog chamber.
- Figure 1. Shows a perspective view of two metal structures joined by the connection device, object of the invention.
- said metal structures are two parapets joined to a post by means of the connection device that includes among its elements a connection piece.

- connection device for joining metal structures 1 comprises a connection piece 2 in combination with screws 3 and nuts 4, so that the connection piece 2 has first holes 5 aligned with other second holes 6 located in adjacent end sections of longitudinal profiles 1a, 1b that are part of the metal structures 1 to be joined.
- the connecting piece 2 sits on coplanar surfaces of the two longitudinal profiles 1a, 1b; where said coplanar surfaces are located in correspondence with the extreme sections of said longitudinal profiles 1a, 1b.
- connection piece 2 comprises a base 2b and two opposing side fins 2a that form an acute angle with space to the plane of said base 2b, which includes the first holes 5.
- the joining of the end sections of the two metal profiles 1a, 1b is carried out in combination with a head 7a that is part of a post 7; where in this case the head 7a includes third holes 8 aligned with the first 5 and second 6 holes.
- the screws 3 are introduced through the first 5 and second 6 and third aligned holes of the longitudinal profiles 1a, 1 b, and then the nuts 4 are coupled with tightening on the threads of said screws 3, so that to secure the connection and prevent the nuts 4 from loosening or unscrewing, the invention has provided a locking system to prevent said nuts 4 from being unscrewed once the connection device has been mounted.
- the locking system comprises truncated conical annular projections 4a integral with one of the two opposite faces of the nuts 4; where said truncated conical annular projections 4a are coaxial with the threaded holes of the nuts 4 themselves; and where said truncated conical annular projections 4a are configured to be embedded or embedded in the lateral surface of the first holes 5 of the connection piece 2, thus achieving the rotational immobilization of the nuts 4.
- each truncated conical annular projection 4a of the nuts 4 includes a grooved outer lateral surface that will be embedded more effectively on the lateral surface of the corresponding first hole 5 of the connecting piece 2.
- connection piece 2 is placed, resting it on the coplanar surfaces of the adjacent end sections of the two longitudinal profiles. 1a, 1b to be joined by matching, so that they are aligned, the first holes 5 of the connection piece 2 and the second holes 6 of the longitudinal profiles 1a, 1 b.
- the screws 3 are introduced through the pairs of first 5 and second 6 holes to thread them on the nuts 4 previously placed by inlay on the first holes 5 of the connection piece 2 (figure 2), so that as The screws 3 are turned by screwing them into the embedded and immobilized nuts 4. As the screws 3 are screwed, the necessary tightening can be achieved in total safety without fear of the nuts 4 turning. Obviously the head of the screws 3 is in contact with the one surface of the longitudinal profiles 1a, 1b of the metal structures to be joined.
- connection piece 2 is shown in Figures 5 to 9 and are described below. They are different configurations that are adapted according to the geometry and size of the structural elements to be connected, even in the case of an expansion joint.
- Figure 5 shows a connecting piece 2, whose side fins 2a form an angle of 90° with respect to the plane of the base 2b.
- This connection piece 2 is intended for a square or rectangular geometry, so that simply changing the dimensions of the tube (longitudinal profiles 1a, 1 b shown in figure 1) would adapt it. In this case, the number of nuts 4 can be variable.
- Figure 6 shows a connecting piece 2 comprising a flat configuration without the side fins 2a. It is a flat 2 connection piece designed for a very small geometry; where it can be applied to a square or round tube, so simply changing the width of the flat connecting piece 2 would fit the tube. Likewise, in this case the number of nuts 4 can be variable.
- Figure 7 shows a connecting piece 2 in which its two side fins 2b have an arched or rounded configuration. It is a connecting piece 2 designed for a very small circular geometry. In this case the entire structure is smaller and few nuts are included 4.
- Figure 8 shows a connecting piece 2 similar to that shown in Figure 7, but without the upper arched part; where in this case, the ends of the base 2b of the connection piece 2 include recesses 9. It is to connect 3 bars forming a cross-shaped configuration; where the recess 9 is coupled to the geometry of a through bar, while the connection piece 2 joins the other two remaining bars. These bars are not represented in the figures.
