Definitions
- Electrode composition and electrode with the electrode composition are Electrode composition and electrode with the electrode composition
- the present invention relates to an electrode composition, an electrode with the electrode composition and the use of the electrode, in particular in a lithium-ion battery.
- lithium ion battery is used synonymously for all terms commonly used in the prior art for galvanic elements and cells containing lithium, such as lithium battery, lithium cell, lithium ion cell, lithium polymer cell and lithium ion cell. Accumulator. In particular, rechargeable batteries (secondary batteries) are included.
- battery and “electrochemical cell” are also used synonymously with the term “lithium ion battery”.
- a lithium-ion battery has at least two different electrodes, a positive electrode (cathode) and a negative electrode (anode). Electron and lithium-ion movements in the cell therefore form an elementary function of lithium-ion batteries.
- the composition of the electrode represents an important aspect for the cell chemistry of the lithium-ion battery, since certain electrochemical properties (such as high-current capacity or cycle stability) of the lithium-ion battery can be specifically adjusted through a suitable selection of the components present in the electrode composition.
- electrodes have at least one active material that is able to reversibly absorb or release lithium ions.
- additives such as electrode binders and electrical conductivity additives are often added to the electrode.
- Such an electrode is also known in the art as a composite electrode.
- the individual components of the electrode composition must be intimately mixed with one another in order to ensure both good contact between the components and a certain level of contact to achieve mechanical stability of the electrode itself.
- the selection of components in the electrode composition not only affects the properties of the lithium-ion battery made from it, but also the manufacturing process of the electrode. For example, some components lead to an improvement in the electrochemical and mechanical properties of the electrode, but are difficult to process in the electrode manufacturing process, and vice versa.
- the invention is therefore based on the object of providing an electrode composition which enables simple and cost-effective production of a lithium-ion battery in terms of process and material costs and which meets the electrochemical performance requirements for use in a lithium-ion battery.
- the object is achieved by an electrode composition, in particular for a lithium-ion battery, the electrode composition comprising the following components:
- (B) at least one mixture of conductive blacks comprising at least a first conductive black and a second conductive black, wherein the first conductive black differs from the second conductive black.
- the invention is based on the basic idea of providing an electrode composition which has a mixture of at least two different conductive blacks.
- the use of at least two conductive blacks that are different from each other allows both a cost-effective provision of the electrode composition and a simple production of an electrode made from the electrode composition.
- the use of two different carbon blacks according to the invention offers a greater electrochemical and process engineering variability for an electrode made from it.
- the cell properties and manufacturing costs of a lithium-ion battery made from the electrode composition according to the invention can thus be influenced in a targeted manner.
- the electrode composition according to the invention for a lithium ion battery is not limited with regard to the electrode.
- the electrode composition can be used for both a cathode and an anode.
- the electrode active material provided in the electrode composition is also not limited.
- any electrode active material known in the art that is capable of forming an electrode, in particular a cathode or an anode, of a lithium ion battery can be used.
- the electrode active material may therefore comprise either a cathode active material or an anode active material, depending on the appropriate use of the electrode composition.
- Suitable cathode active materials for the cathode can be all cathode active materials known in the art that can reversibly absorb or release lithium ions.
- Preferred cathode active materials for the electrode composition include lithium cobalt oxide (LOO), lithium nickel oxide (LNO), lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA), lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC), lithium and manganese-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide or lithium nickel manganese oxide (LMR), lithium manganese oxide (LMO), lithium iron phosphate (LFP). , lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP), lithium nickel manganese oxide high-voltage spinel (LNMO) and derivatives and combinations thereof.
- LEO lithium cobalt oxide
- LNO lithium nickel oxide
- NCA lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide
- NMC lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide
- LMR lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide
- LMR lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide
- LMO lithium iron phosphate
- LFP lithium iron phosphate
- LNMO lithium nickel manganese oxide high-voltage spinel
- Lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide compounds are also known under the abbreviation NMC, and occasionally also under the technical abbreviation NCM.
- NMC-based cathode active materials are used in particular in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
- NMC as a cathode active material has an advantageous combination of desirable properties, such as a high specific capacity reduced cobalt content, high high-current capability and high intrinsic safety, which is reflected, for example, in sufficient stability in the event of overcharging.
- Certain stoichiometries are given in the literature as number triples, for example NMC-811, NMC622, NMC532 and NMC111. The triple number indicates the relative nickel : manganese : cobalt content.
- lithium and manganese-rich NMCs with the general formula unit Lii +£ (NixMn y Coz)i- £ O2 can be used, where E is in particular between 0.1 and 0.6, preferably between 0.2 and 0.4.
- These lithium-rich layered oxides are also known as Overlithitated (Layered) Oxides (OLO).
- the anode active material is also not limited, and any anode active material in the art capable of reversibly absorbing or releasing lithium ions can be used.
- the anode active material is preferably selected from the group consisting of synthetic graphite, natural graphite, graphene, meso-carbon, doped carbon, hard carbon, soft carbon, fullerene, silicon-carbon composite, silicon, nano-silicon, surface-coated silicon, silicon suboxide (SiOx), silicon alloys, metallic lithium , aluminum alloy, indium, indium alloys, tin alloys, cobalt alloys and mixtures thereof.
- the electrode composition according to the invention comprises at least one mixture of conductive carbon black, which comprises at least a first conductive carbon black and a second conductive carbon black, wherein the first conductive carbon black differs from the second conductive carbon black.
- a conductive carbon black is understood to mean a paracrystalline carbon-based powdery material whose structure predominantly includes non-graphitized areas, i.e. amorphous areas, and partially graphitized areas, i.e. crystalline areas.
- carbon black has structural characteristics no areas with sp 3 hybridization as is the case, for example, with carbon with a diamond structure.
- Carbon black is also commonly known as carbon black or industrial carbon black.
- a conductive carbon black can also contain a small proportion of hydrogen, oxygen and/or sulfur, in the form of functional polar groups such as acid or acid anhydrides or carboxylates.
- Conductive carbon blacks are characterized by the fact that they are advantageously electrically conductive. Therefore, the electrical conductivity of an electrode can be increased by using a conductive carbon black. This offers the particular technical advantage that an electrode with increased conductivity usually has the electrochemical properties such as. B. High-current capacity of a lithium-ion battery made from it is improved.
- conductive carbon blacks with an electrical conductivity of at least 0.1 S cm -1 , preferably at least 1 S cm -1 , particularly preferably at least 4 S cm -1 .
- the invention is not restricted in terms of the number of lead blacks, as long as the mixture of lead blacks comprises at least two different lead blacks. There can therefore also be several carbon blacks present in the mixture. For example, a mixture of three or four different carbon blacks can be used in the electrode composition.
- the first carbon black differs from the second carbon black in at least one of the following properties:
- Carbon blacks are generally present as particles. A distinction can be made between primary particles and secondary particles.
- Primary particles represent the isolated, i.e. not agglomerated, particles of the carbon black used. However, primary particles can agglomerate with one another or associate with one another. Such agglomerates of primary particles are called secondary particles or secondary structure.
- the first conductive carbon black and the second conductive carbon black each have a particle size distribution of primary particles with an average particle diameter (d50) in a range from 1 to 1000 nm, preferably 10 to 100 nm, the average particle diameter of the first conductive carbon black differing from that average particle diameter (d50) of the second carbon black differs by at least 10%, preferably by at least 15%.
- the particle size distribution and the average particle diameter (d50) can be determined using electron micrographs (TEM).
- the electrode active material is usually first mixed with the conductive carbon black and electrode binder in a suspension of a carrier solvent.
- the conductive carbon black is homogenized and dispersed in the carrier solvent together with the electrode active material in a mixing process.
- a homogenized mixture of the electrode active material and a conductive additive and binder a carrier solvent is also referred to as an electrode coating material (“slurry”).
- a metallic current conductor for example a rolled aluminum foil, can then be coated with this to form a finished electrode.
- a non-homogeneous electrode coating compound reduces the electrochemical properties, for example the service life, of an electrode made from it and thus also that of the lithium-ion battery. This is due in particular to inadequate mixing of the components.
- the inventors have recognized that a shortened mixing time can be achieved by mixing two conductive blacks with different properties, in particular a different particle diameter. Surprisingly, however, the shortened mixing time does not lead to a reduced electrochemical performance or service life for the lithium-ion battery made from the electrode composition.
- further advantageous properties of the electrode composition can be set with an electrode composition which has a mixture of two conductive blacks which are different from one another and which differ at least with regard to the average particle diameter of the primary particles.
- the use of carbon blacks with a larger average particle diameter can result in a lower oil absorption coefficient because the interaction of the carbon blacks with the carrier solvent decreases with increasing particle size. This means that less carrier solvent can be used to form the electrode coating composition and the solids content in the slurry can be increased.
- the use of smaller particles can lead to a higher oil absorption coefficient, resulting in higher absorption or wetting of the carrier solvent.
- conductive blacks with larger particle diameters also results in a lower viscosity of the electrode coating composition can be achieved, whereas smaller particle diameters can lead to a higher viscosity of the electrode coating compound.
- the dispersibility of the carbon blacks can also be influenced by the average particle size. While the use of conductive blacks with larger particle diameters leads to easier dispersibility in the mixing process, smaller particle diameters can make the dispersibility of the electrode composition in the mixing process more difficult.
- the electrical conductivity of the electrode resulting from the electrode composition can be influenced by the particle size. Conductive blacks with a larger particle diameter typically result in a lower electrical conductivity of the electrode, while conductive blacks with a smaller particle diameter result in a higher electrical conductivity of the resulting electrode.
- the above-mentioned properties can advantageously be specifically adjusted in the electrode composition.
- the mixture of carbon blacks has a bimodal particle size distribution.
- the average particle diameter of the conductive blacks and the particle size distribution of the primary particles can be measured, for example, by evaluating electron micrographs, for example with electron microscopy, in particular transmission electron microscopy.
- the first conductive carbon black and the second conductive carbon black each have a BET surface area in a range of 1 to 1000 m 2 g -1 , preferably 50 to 750 m 2 g -1 , particularly preferably 100 to 400 m 2 g - 1 , wherein the BET surface area of the first conductive carbon black differs from the BET surface area of the second conductive carbon black by at least 10%, preferably by at least 15%, particularly preferably at least 20%.
- the BET surface area is determined according to ASTM D6556-04.
- the interaction with the carrier solvent can be adjusted during the production of the electrodes.
- the use of conductive blacks with larger BET surface areas allows for greater interaction with the carrier solvent, while lower BET surface areas result in less interaction. Consequently, by using a mixture of conductive blacks, the interaction with the carrier solvent can be specifically adjusted, which, among other things, allows shortened mixing times to be achieved during electrode production.
- the first conductive black and the second conductive black each have an oil absorption coefficient in a range of 1 to 800 ml (100 g) -1 , preferably 40 to 400 ml (100 g) -1 , whereby the oil absorption coefficient of the first conductive black differs from the oil absorption coefficient of the second carbon black by at least 10%, preferably by at least 15%.
- the oil absorption coefficient is determined according to ASTM D2414-06 a.
- the oil absorption coefficient indicates the amount of oil or carrier solvent that can be absorbed per 100 g of carbon black.
- the oil absorption coefficient is therefore an important parameter in determining the interaction between the carrier solvent in the mixing process and the conductive carbon black. For example, a lower oil absorption coefficient means that a smaller amount of carrier solvent can be used in the mixing process, reducing energy input during drying. This in turn reduces the energy costs for the drying process.
- the invention is not restricted in relation to the conductive carbon black.
- any conductive carbon black known in the art for use in lithium-ion batteries can be used.
- the mixture of carbon blacks has at least two carbon blacks that are different from each other, one of which is obtainable from an incomplete combustion process and the other carbon black from thermal decomposition.
- two different conductive blacks are advantageously used, which differ in terms of their method of production.
- furnace black Conductive soot from incomplete combustion is also known as furnace black.
- Carbon black from thermal decomposition is also called acetylene black.
- soot can also be used, for example channel black, lamp black or gas black.
- Carbon blacks suitable for applications in electrode compositions are available, for example, from Denka, Japan, CABOT USA, Akzo Nobel and Imerys.
- the first and second conductive carbon black can also have secondary structures that differ from one another.
- the secondary structure is influenced by the production method of the respective carbon black.
- the secondary structure is changed, among other things, by the introduction of high shear forces when mixing the electrode coating materials, whereupon the electrical conductivity of the resulting electrode can decrease.
- the different secondary structures also result in different oil absorption coefficients.
- the secondary structures can be determined using electron micrographs (TEM).
- the first conductive black and the second conductive black each have a bulk density in a range of 10 to 100 g / liter, the bulk density of the first conductive black differing from the bulk density of the second conductive black by at least 10%, preferably by at least 15 %.
- the bulk densities are determined in accordance with the standards DIN ISO 697 and EN ISO 60.
- the first conductive carbon black and the second conductive carbon black each have a tap density in a range of 20 to 250 g/L, the tap density of the first conductive carbon black differing from the tap density of the second conductive carbon black by at least 10%, preferably by at least 15%.
- the tapping densities are determined in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 787-11 standards.
- the carbon blacks can also contain impurities.
- carbon blacks are used which contain a small proportion of impurities, in particular a small proportion of ash, in order to avoid later gassing in the cell.
- the carbon blacks can also differ in terms of their surface properties.
- the carbon blacks can be provided with different polar groups such as H, O, S, OH and COOH groups.
- the first carbon black is present in a proportion of 1 to 99% by weight in the mixture of carbon blacks, preferably 25 to 75% by weight, particularly preferably 45 to 55% by weight, based on the total weight of the mixture the leading Russian.
- the first conductive black can therefore be mixed with the second conductive black in almost any way.
- a lead additive can be provided which is selected from the group consisting of carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphite, expanded graphite and carbon nanofibers (CNT), porous carbons, gas-phase carbon nanofibers (vapor grown carbon fibers - VGCF) and combinations thereof.
- the electrode comprises at least one electrode binder selected from the group consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) copolymer (PVDF-HFP), polytertrafluoroethylene (PTFE), hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber ( HNBR), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), polyacrylate (PAA), lithium polyacrylate (LiPAA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and combinations thereof.

Description
• mittlerer Partikeldurchmesser;
• Partikelgrößenverteilung;
• Sekundärstruktur
• spezifische BET-Oberfläche; elektrische Leitfähigkeit;
Ölabsorptionskoeffizient;
Schüttdichte;
• Stampfdichte;
• Herstellungsart;
(A) 70 bis 99 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 90 bis 98 Gew.-%, wenigstens eines Elektrodenaktivmaterials;
3 Gew.-% Acetylene Black (Firma Denka, BET-Oberfläche: 140 m2/g, mittlerer
