Abstract
フロー電池システムを用いて二酸化炭素のレドックス制御による充放電可能なRF電池を提供する。このレドックスフロー電池システムは、少なくとも一対の正極及び負極と、二酸化炭素及びその還元体からなる負極レドックス対を含む負極電解液と、正極レドックス対を含む正極電解液と、正極電解液及び負極電解液の間でそれぞれのレドックス対を隔離するとともに、プロトンを伝導する陽イオン交換膜からなるセパレータと、負極レドックス対を酸化還元しうる金属錯体触媒と、を備え、金属錯体触媒が、負極表面に担持されるか、及び/又は負極電解液中に含まれる。
Description
本出願は、2021年7月30日に日本国において出願された特願2021-125048に基づき優先権を主張し、当該出願に記載された内容は、本明細書に援用する。また、本願において引用した特許、特許出願及び文献に記載された内容は、本明細書に援用する。
本発明は、二酸化炭素(CO2)のレドックス制御によるフロー電池システムに関する。
地球温暖化対策として、太陽光、風力を初めとする再生可能エネルギーが導入されるようになると、これらの間欠的エネルギーの需給バランスを調整するために、大容量蓄電池の利用が重要になっている。レドックスフロー(RF)電池は、このような蓄電池の一種であり、長寿命で安全性が高いこと、電池出力(kW)と電池容量(kWh)を独立に設計できるため用途に応じた最適設計が可能となるなどの優れた特徴を有している。しかし、ライフサイクルアセスメントの観点からは、蓄電池のCO2排出量は多いため電気化学的にCO2の利用を図ろうとする技術が開発されている。
特許文献1には、二酸化炭素をベースとするレドックス対、例えば、二酸化炭素-ギ酸又はギ酸塩のレドックス対と、エネルギー貯蔵サイクル中に二酸化炭素をギ酸又はギ酸塩に還元し、かつエネルギー生成サイクル中にギ酸又はギ酸塩を二酸化炭素に酸化するように選ばれた2成分パラジウム-スズ二機能性触媒とを使用するレドックスフロー電池の概念が提案されている。さらに、非特許文献1には、バッチ式電解液と活性化したPdSn/LaCoO3触媒を含むガス拡散負極を用いた予備的なCO2レドックスフロー電池を用いて、318Kで19.2mW/cm2のピーク電力密度が得られたことが記載されている。

特許文献1には、確かにPd-Sn触媒被覆ポリマー膜負極と、Br2/Br-陽極を備えたCO2レドックスフロー電池の作製方法が記載されているが、充放電サイクル試験が実施されておらず、仮想的な実験方法が開示されているに過ぎない。一方、非特許文献1では、バッチ型電池を作製して、定電流充放電を行って電池の充電状態を調べているが、電解液をフローさせておらず、生成物の分析結果も示されていない。
本発明は、フロー電池システムを用いて二酸化炭素のレドックス制御による充放電可能なRF電池を提供することを課題とする。
本発明は、このような課題を解決するためになされたものであって、二酸化炭素及びその還元体からなるレドックス対を負極電解液に溶解し、これらを酸化還元しうる金属錯体触媒を用いることとした。
すなわち、本発明の第一の視点におけるレドックスフロー電池システムは、少なくとも一対の正極及び負極と、二酸化炭素及びその還元体からなる負極レドックス対を含む負極電解液と、正極レドックス対を含む正極電解液と、正極電解液及び負極電解液の間でそれぞれのレドックス対を隔離するとともに、プロトンを伝導する陽イオン交換膜からなるセパレータと、負極レドックス対を酸化還元しうる金属錯体触媒と、を備え、この金属錯体触媒が、負極表面に担持されるか、及び/又は負極電解液中に含まれることを特徴とする。

異なる視点において、レドックスフロー電池システムは、二酸化炭素の還元体が、ギ酸、シュウ酸又はそれらの塩であり、正極レドックス対が、臭素-臭化物、塩素-塩化物、ヨウ素-ヨウ化物、バナジウム(IV)-バナジウム(V)、クロム(III)-二クロム酸塩(VI)、セリウム(III)-セリウム(IV)及びマンガン(II)-マンガン(III)からなる群より選択されるレドックス対であることが好ましい。この正極レドックス対がマンガン(II)-マンガン(III)レドックス対であるとき、正極電解液は、反応性金属イオンを含有し、この反応性金属イオンは、バナジウムイオン、チタンイオン、クロムイオン、亜鉛イオン、鉄イオン、コバルトイオン、銅イオン、モリブデンイオン、ルテニウムイオン、パラジウムイオン、銀イオン、タングステンイオン、水銀イオン及びセリウムイオンからなる群より選択される少なくとも一種であることが好ましい。
さらに異なる視点において、レドックスフロー電池システムは、負極が、ガス拡散型電極、触媒被覆膜、トリクルベッド電極及び金属有機構造体(MOF)からなる群より選択される高表面積多孔性電極であり、また、負極電解液へ二酸化炭素ガスを供給する手段、及び/又は前記負極電解液から二酸化炭素ガスを回収する手段をさらに備えることが好ましい。
なお、本明細書で記載する好ましい実施形態のそれぞれは相互に独立しており、それぞれの実施形態は任意に組み合わせることができるものとする。

本発明によれば、金属錯体触媒を含むフロー電池システムを用いることにより、二酸化炭素のレドックス制御による充放電可能なRF電池を提供することができる。

次に、本発明の各実施形態について、図面を参照して説明する。なお、以下に説明する各実施形態は、特許請求の範囲に係る発明を限定するものではなく、また、各実施形態の中で説明されている諸要素及びその組み合わせの全てが本発明の解決手段に必須であるとは限らない。
[レドックスフロー電池]
本発明の一実施形態に係るレドックスフロー電池の構成を図1に示す。レドックスフロー電池11は、交流/直流変換器を介して、発電所(例えば、太陽光発電機、風力発電機、その他、一般の発電所など)と、電力系統や需要家などの負荷とに接続され、発電所を電力供給源として充電を行い、負荷を電力提供対象として放電を行う。上記充放電を行うにあたり、レドックスフロー電池11と、この電池11に電解液を循環させる循環機構(タンク、配管、ポンプ)とを備える以下の電池システムが構築される。
本発明の一実施形態に係るレドックスフロー電池の構成を図1に示す。レドックスフロー電池11は、交流/直流変換器を介して、発電所(例えば、太陽光発電機、風力発電機、その他、一般の発電所など)と、電力系統や需要家などの負荷とに接続され、発電所を電力供給源として充電を行い、負荷を電力提供対象として放電を行う。上記充放電を行うにあたり、レドックスフロー電池11と、この電池11に電解液を循環させる循環機構(タンク、配管、ポンプ)とを備える以下の電池システムが構築される。
レドックスフロー電池11は、電池セルの中に、正極1と、負極3と、正極電解液2と、負極電解液4と、両電解液2、4の間に介在するセパレータ5とを備える。正極電解液2は、タンク6から配管を介して(図1では、Mn2+/Mn3+レドックス対を含む正極電解液が)循環供給される。負極電解液4は、タンク7から配管を介して(図1では、CO2/HCO2
-レドックス対を含む負極電解液が)循環供給される。配管には、電解液を循環させるためのポンプ8、9を備える。レドックスフロー電池11は、配管、ポンプを利用して、タンク6の正極電解液、及びタンク7の負極電解液を循環供給して、各極の電解液中のレドックス対を酸化還元することで充放電を行う。
正極1及び負極3の材質は、炭素繊維を主体とするもの、例えば、不織布(カーボンフェルト)やペーパーが挙げられる。カーボンフェルト製の電極を利用すると、電解液に水溶液を用いた場合において充電時に酸素発生電位になっても、酸素ガスが発生し難い、表面積が大きい、及び電解液の流通性に優れるなどの利点があり、公知の電極を利用できる。負極3が、金属錯体触媒を担持している場合、当業者に知られている高表面積多孔性電極、例えば、ガス拡散電極、触媒被覆膜、トリクルベッド電極又は金属有機フレームワーク(MOF)をベースとする電極の群から選ばれた型のものであってもよい。それにより同電極上の二酸化炭素の有効な還元及びギ酸(又はギ酸塩)の酸化を促進する。
正極1は、正極レドックス対であるマンガンイオン(Mn2+/Mn3+)と相互作用する電極である。この電極は高表面積カーボン(例えば、グラファイトフェルト、カーボンペーパー)であってもよく、それはまた触媒としての金属、例えば、白金、パラジウム、金を含み得る。
セパレータ5は、例えば、陽イオン交換膜や陰イオン交換膜といったイオン交換膜が挙げられる。イオン交換膜は、正極レドックス対の金属イオンと負極レドックス対のCO2/HCO2
-との隔離性に優れる、及びH+イオン(電池内部の電荷担体)の透過性に優れる、といった効果があり、セパレータ5として好適に利用することができる。好ましい実施形態では、セパレータ5はプロトン交換膜、例えば、固体ポリマー電解質膜又はプロトン伝導セラミック膜を含む。
レドックスフロー電池11は、図1において実線で示されるような電池充電モード及び破線で示されるような電池放電モードで運転し得る。電池充電モードでは、負極表面又はその近傍に供給された二酸化炭素が金属錯体触媒によりギ酸に還元される。生成したギ酸は、タンク7に流され貯蔵される。電池放電モード(即ち、エネルギー生成)では、負極表面又はその近傍に供給されたギ酸が金属錯体触媒によりCO2とH+イオンに酸化される。次いでCO2がタンク7に流され貯蔵される。CO2は、例えば、圧縮CO2として貯蔵でき、又は多様な高表面積吸着剤、例えば、ゼオライト、金属-有機フレームワークに吸着でき、こうしてそれが電池充電モードで再使用し得る。こうして、CO2をベースとするレドックス対が還元段階と酸化段階の間で往復させられる。一方、正極表面又はその近傍では、図1に示される電池充電モードを参照して、Mn2+/Mn3+を含む正極レドックス対がタンク6から正極1に供給され、その中に含まれるMn2+イオンが正極1で酸化されてMn3+を生成する。次いでMn3+イオンがタンク6に流される。電池放電モードでは、Mn3+がタンク6から正極1に供給され、その中に含まれるMn3+が正極1で還元されてMn2+イオンを生成する。こうして、正極1で、Mn2+/Mn3+レドックス対が酸化段階と還元段階の間で往復させられる。
図1に示す実施形態の電気化学反応におけるそれぞれの標準電極電位及びセル電位は以下のとおりである。

正極は、さらに他の適切なレドックス対を採用してもよい。正極に適する他のレドックス対の例としては、限定はしないが、臭素-臭化物、塩素-塩化物、ヨウ素-ヨウ化物、バナジウム(IV)-バナジウム(V)、クロム(III)-二クロム酸塩(VI)、セリウム(III)-セリウム(IV)及び鉄(II)-鉄(III)、などが挙げられる。
これらの中でもマンガンイオンは標準酸化還元電位が高く(Mn2+/Mn3+の標準酸化還元電位は1.51V)、バナジウムよりも比較的安価であって資源供給面においても優れていると考えられる。しかし、正極レドックス対としてMn2+/Mn3+対を用いた場合、充放電に伴って固体のMnO2(4価)が析出するという問題がある。Mn3+は不安定であり、マンガンイオンの水溶液では、以下の不均化反応によって、Mn2+及びMnO2(4価)を生じる。

そこで、正極電解液にマンガンイオンとともに特定の金属イオンを含有させることで上記析出を抑制することが好ましい。1つの実施形態において、上記正極電解液は、マンガンイオンと、反応性金属イオンとを含有する。反応性金属イオンとは、バナジウムイオン、クロムイオン、鉄(Fe)イオン、コバルト(Co)イオン、銅(Cu)イオン、モリブデン(Mo)イオン、ルテニウム(Ru)イオン、パラジウム(Pd)イオン、銀(Ag)イオン、タングステン(W)イオン、水銀(Hg)イオン及びセリウム(Ce)イオンから選択される少なくとも一種である。この反応性金属イオンは、正極電解液中で活物質として機能すると共に、マンガン酸化物のような析出物の発生を抑制する機能を有する。
上記正極電解液は、更に添加金属イオンを含有してもよい。添加金属イオンとは、アルミニウム(Al)イオン、カドミウム(Cd)イオン、インジウム(In)イオン、錫(Sn)イオン、アンチモン(Sb)イオン、イリジウム(Ir)イオン、金(Au)イオン、鉛(Pb)イオン及びビスマス(Bi)イオンから選択される少なくとも一種である。この添加金属イオンは、実質的に活物質として機能せず、析出物の発生を抑制する機能を有する。すなわち、上述の添加金属イオンは、正極電解液にマンガンイオンと共に存在することで、マンガン酸化物といった析出物の発生を抑制することができる。特に、添加金属イオンは、その含有量が極僅かであっても、析出物の発生の抑制効果が得られる。したがって、反応性金属イオンに加えて、添加金属イオンを含有することで、析出物の発生をより効果的に抑制することができる。また、反応性金属イオンと添加金属イオンとが共存する場合は、電解液中における活物質の割合の低下を抑制し、高いエネルギー密度を得るためには添加金属イオンの含有量を少なくすることが好ましい。
[電解液]
負極電解液は、負極レドックス対を溶解しうるものであれば特に制限されないが、二酸化炭素とその還元体の溶解性及び安全性の観点から水溶液であることが好ましい。水溶液中の二酸化炭素の存在状態はpHによって変化し、酸性条件下では炭酸ガスが水に溶けた状態で存在するため好ましい。一方、pHが6.5以上になると、二酸化炭素は炭酸水素イオン(HCO3 -)や炭酸イオン(CO3 2-)と平衡化するため、負極電解液は炭酸水素ナトリウム溶液のような弱塩基性水溶液であってもよい。
負極電解液は、負極レドックス対を溶解しうるものであれば特に制限されないが、二酸化炭素とその還元体の溶解性及び安全性の観点から水溶液であることが好ましい。水溶液中の二酸化炭素の存在状態はpHによって変化し、酸性条件下では炭酸ガスが水に溶けた状態で存在するため好ましい。一方、pHが6.5以上になると、二酸化炭素は炭酸水素イオン(HCO3 -)や炭酸イオン(CO3 2-)と平衡化するため、負極電解液は炭酸水素ナトリウム溶液のような弱塩基性水溶液であってもよい。
ここで、本実施形態のレドックスフロー電池は、負極電解液へ二酸化炭素ガスを供給する手段、及び/又は負極電解液から二酸化炭素ガスを回収する手段をさらに備えてもよい。二酸化炭素ガスを供給する手段としては、例えば、バブリングによる注入手段が挙げられる。バブリングによる注入は、通常は連続的に行われるが、間欠的に行うようにしてもよい。又バブリングによる注入は、常温常圧下で行われるが、二酸化炭素の溶解度を上げるべく、なるべくなら常温以下で1気圧以上の加圧状態のもとで、行うとよい(ヘンリーの法則)。これにより負極電解液中の二酸化炭素は、飽和状態で溶存、維持することができる。
正極でのレドックス反応に使用する電解液は、所望のレドックス対に適した任意の塩溶液である。一実施形態において、正極電解液は、臭素および臭化物(Br-)イオンの供給源、例えばKBrを含む。一実施形態において、正極電解液は、塩素および塩化物(Cl-)イオンの供給源、例えばKClを含む。一実施形態において、正極電解液は、Mn2+及びMn3+の供給源、例えばMnSO4を含む。一実施形態において、正極電解液は、V4+およびV5+イオンの供給源、例えばVOSO4を含む。一実施形態において、正極電解液は、第1鉄(Fe2+)および第2鉄(Fe3+)イオンの供給源、例えばFeCl3を含む。正極電解液のイオンを供給する塩の濃度は、約0.01M~約10M、約0.05M~約5M、さらには約0.1M~1Mであり得る。
正極電解液に含まれる金属イオンは、いずれも水溶性イオンである。従って、正極電解液には、溶媒を水とする水溶液を好適に利用することができる。特に、電解液を硫酸や硫酸塩を含有する酸の水溶液とすると、各種の金属イオンの安定性の向上、活物質となる金属イオンの反応性の向上、溶解度の向上が得られる場合がある。また、マンガンイオンのような電位が高い金属イオンを用いる場合でも、副反応が生じ難く(分解が生じ難い)、イオン伝導度が高く、電池の内部抵抗が小さくなる。さらに、硫酸塩などと水とを用いて電解液が容易に得られ、製造性に優れる、といった複数の効果が期待できる。上記硫酸や硫酸塩を用いて作製した酸の水溶液(電解液)は、例えば、硫酸アニオン(SO4
2-)が存在する。電解液を酸溶液とする場合、酸の濃度を高めると、マンガン酸化物といった析出物の発生をある程度抑制できる。反応性金属イオンといった析出物の発生を抑制可能な金属イオンを含む電解液では、電解液中における酸の濃度をある程度低くしても、析出物の発生を抑制できる可能性がある。電解液には、硫酸や硫酸塩の他、公知の酸や公知の塩を用いて作製した水溶液を利用することができる。
[金属錯体触媒]
本実施形態のレドックスフロー電池において、CO2を酸化還元するための触媒は、金属錯体触媒であり、とりわけ遷移金属からなる有機金属錯体であることが好ましい。酸化還元反応を起こすための触媒に用いられる遷移金属種は、イリジウム、ロジウム、ルテニウム、コバルト、オスミニウム、ニッケル、鉄、パラジウム、白金又は金から、少なくとも1種類以上の遷移金属を含む有機金属錯体又はこれらの塩を用いることができるが、好適にはイリジウム、ロジウム、ルテニウム、コバルトを、更に好適には、イリジウム、ルテニウムを用いることができる。
本実施形態のレドックスフロー電池において、CO2を酸化還元するための触媒は、金属錯体触媒であり、とりわけ遷移金属からなる有機金属錯体であることが好ましい。酸化還元反応を起こすための触媒に用いられる遷移金属種は、イリジウム、ロジウム、ルテニウム、コバルト、オスミニウム、ニッケル、鉄、パラジウム、白金又は金から、少なくとも1種類以上の遷移金属を含む有機金属錯体又はこれらの塩を用いることができるが、好適にはイリジウム、ロジウム、ルテニウム、コバルトを、更に好適には、イリジウム、ルテニウムを用いることができる。
触媒として用いられる遷移金属から構成される有機金属錯体の構造は、負極電解液中で少しでも溶解する錯体構造を有していることが好ましく、その錯体構造は、一般式(1)で表される遷移金属錯体、複合金属錯体、その互変異性体もしくは立体異性体、またはそれらの塩を含む錯体が触媒として用いることができる。
上記式(1)において、Mは、Ir、Rh、Ru、Co、Os、Ni、Fe、Pd、Pt、又はAuであり、A~F(A~Fのうちの1~3個は存在しなくても良い。)は、それぞれ独立に、ハロゲン、リン、窒素、炭素、酸素、硫黄、もしくは水素を配位原子として含む配位子であるか、または、A~Fのうちの2つは、Mに配位する2座配位子であり、nは、金属錯体の電荷を表し、正の整数、0、または負の整数である。
具体的には、塩化ルテニウムトリフェニルホスフィン、クロロルテニウムトリフェニルホスフィントリスルホネート錯体などが挙げられるが、更に選択制の高い触媒として用いることが可能な金属錯体の構造を具体的に述べると、その錯体の構造は、一般式(2)で表される遷移金属錯体、複合金属錯体、その互変異性体もしくは立体異性体、又はそれらの塩を含む錯体が触媒として用いることができる。
上記式(2)において、Mは、Ir、Rh、Ru、Co、Os、Ni、Fe、Pd、Pt、又はAuであり、AとBは、Mに配位する2座配位子であり、Zは、芳香族性アニオン配位子、又は芳香族性配位子であり、Lは、任意の配位子であるか、又は存在せず、nは、金属錯体の電荷を表し、正の整数、0、または負の整数である。
AとBを含む2座配位子の具体例としては、芳香族性を有する配位子であり、置換基を有していても有していなくてもよく、置換基を有する場合には置換基は一つでも複数でも良い。より具体的には、式(2)のA-Bで示される配位子としては、2,2’-ビピリジン、6-ヒドロキシ-2,2’-ビピリジン、6,6’-ジヒドロキシ-2,2’-ビピリジン、6-ヒドロキシ-4-メチル-2,2’-ビピリジン、4,4’-ジメチル-6-ヒドロキシ-2,2’-ビピリジン、6,6’-ジヒドロキシ-4-メチル-2,2’-ビピリジン、6,6’-ジヒドロキシ-4,4’-ジメチル-2,2’-ビピリジン、6-ヒドロキシ-5-メチル-2,2’-ビピリジン、5,5’-ジメチル-6-ヒドロキシ-2,2’-ビピリジン、6,6’-ジヒドロキシ-5-メチル-2,2’-ビピリジン、6,6’-ジヒドロキシ-5,5’-ジメチル-2,2’-ビピリジン、1,10-フェナントロリン、2-ヒドロキシ-1,10-フェナントロリン、2,9-ジヒドロキシ-1,10-フェナントロリン、2-ヒドロキシ-4-メチル-1,10-フェナントロリン、4,7-ジメチル-2-ヒドロキシ-1,10-フェナントロリン、2,9-ジヒドロキシ-4-メチル-1,10-フェナントロリン、2,9-ジヒドロキシ-4,7-ジメチル-1,10-フェナントロリンが例示できる。
Zで示される配位子は、芳香族性を有するアニオン性配位子または芳香族性を有する配位子である。より具体的には、シクロペンタジエニル、1-メチルシクロペンタジエニル、1,2-ジメチルシクロペンタジエニルとその位置異性体、1,2,3-トリメチルシクロペンタジエニルとその位置異性体、1,2,3,4-テトラメチルシクロペンタジエニルとその位置異性体、1,2,3,4,5-ペンタメチルシクロペンタジエニル(以下「Cp*」と省略して記載する場合がある。)、1,2,3,4,5-ペンタフェニルシクロペンタジエニル、ベンゼン、1,2,3,4,5,6-ヘキサメチルベンゼンが例示できる。
Lで示される配位子の具体例としては、水分子、水素原子、アセトニトリルに代表されるニトリル化合物、テトラヒドロフランに代表されるエーテル化合物、アセトンに代表されるケトン化合物、ヒドリドイオン、アルコキシドイオン、水酸化物イオン、ハロゲン化物イオン、炭酸イオン、トリフルオロメタンスルホン酸イオン、硫酸イオン、硫酸水素イオン、硝酸イオン、ギ酸イオン、もしくは酢酸イオンの配位子であるか、または存在しなくても良い。アルコキシドイオンとしては、特に限定されないが、例えば、メタノール、エタノール、n-プロピルアルコール、イソプロピルアルコール、n-ブチルアルコール、sec-ブチルアルコール、イソブチルアルコール、又はtert-ブチルアルコール等から誘導されるアルコキシドイオンが挙げられる。
例えばより具体的には、下記式(3)~(7)のいずれかで表される遷移金属錯体、複合金属錯体、その互変異性体もしくは立体異性体、またはそれらの塩を含む錯体などが触媒として用いることができる。
上記式(3)~(7)において、5員環及び6員環は、芳香族性を有するものであり、また、A1及びA2は、いずれも窒素であるか、又はそれぞれ独立に窒素もしくは炭素であり、X1~X8は、それぞれ独立に、窒素又は炭素であり、R1~R8は、それぞれ独立に、水素原子、アルキル基、フェニル基、ニトロ基、ハロゲン基、スルホン酸基(スルホ基)、アミノ基、カルボン酸基(カルボキシ基)、ヒドロキシ基、オキシアニオン基、又はアルコキシ基(ただし、Xiが窒素である場合、その窒素の位置のRiは存在しない。)であり、Z1は、芳香族性アニオン配位子又は芳香族性配位子であり、L1は、それぞれ独立に、任意の配位子であるか、または存在せず、nは、正の整数、0、又は負の整数であり、Mは、それぞれ独立に、イリジウム、ロジウム、ルテニウム、コバルト、オスミウム、ニッケル、鉄、パラジウム、白金及び金からなる群より選択される金属である。
一般式(3)~(7)で示される遷移金属錯体において、そのカウンターイオンは、特に限定されないが、陰イオンとしては、例えば、六フッ化リン酸イオン(PF6
-)、テトラフルオロほう酸イオン(BF4
-)、水酸化物イオン(OH-)、酢酸イオン、炭酸イオン、リン酸イオン、硫酸イオン、硝酸イオン、ハロゲン化物イオン(例えばフッ化物イオン(F-)、塩化物イオン(Cl-)、臭化物イオン(Br-)、ヨウ化物イオン(I-)等)、次亜ハロゲン酸イオン(例えば次亜フッ素酸イオン、次亜塩素酸イオン、次亜臭素酸イオン、次亜ヨウ素酸イオン等)、亜ハロゲン酸イオン(例えば亜フッ素酸イオン、亜塩素酸イオン、亜臭素酸イオン、亜ヨウ素酸イオン等)、ハロゲン酸イオン(例えばフッ素酸イオン、塩素酸イオン、臭素酸イオン、ヨウ素酸イオン等)、過ハロゲン酸イオン(例えば過フッ素酸イオン、過塩素酸イオン、過臭素酸イオン、過ヨウ素酸イオン等)、トリフルオロメタンスルホン酸イオン(OSO2CF3
-)、テトラキスペンタフルオロフェニルボレートイオン[B(C6F5)4
-]等が挙げられる。陽イオンとしては、特に限定されないが、リチウムイオン、マグネシウムイオン、ナトリウムイオン、カリウムイオン、カルシウムイオン、バリウムイオン、ストロンチウムイオン、イットリウムイオン、スカンジウムイオン、ランタノイドイオン、等の各種金属イオン、水素イオン等が挙げられる。また、これらカウンターイオンは、1種類でも良いが、2種類以上が併存していても良い。
なお、本明細書において、アルキル基としては、特に限定されないが、例えば、メチル基、エチル基、n-プロピル基、イソプロピル基、n-ブチル基、イソブチル基、sec-ブチル基、tert-ブチル基、ネオペンチル基、ペンチル基、ヘキシル基、ヘプチル基、オクチル基、ノニル基、デシル基、ウンデシル基、ドデシル基、トリデシル基、テトラデシル基、ペンタデシル基、ヘキサデシル基、ヘプタデシル基、オクタデシル基、ノナデシル基、イコシル基等が挙げられる。アルキル基から誘導される基、例えばヒドロキシアルキル基、アルコキシアルキル基、ジアルキルアミノアルキル基、や原子団(アルコキシ基等)についても同様である。カルボン酸エステル基、カルボン酸アルキルアミド基を構成するアルキル基も同様である。アルコキシ基としては、特に限定されないが、例えば、前記各アルキル基が酸素原子に結合した構造(RO-)であり、例えば、メトキシ基、エトキシ基などが挙げられる。また、本発明において、「ハロゲン」とは、任意のハロゲン元素を示すが、例えば、フッ素、塩素、臭素、ヨウ素が挙げられる。さらに、本発明において置換基等に異性体が存在する場合は、特に制限しない限り、どの異性体でもよい。例えば、単に「プロピル基」という場合はn-プロピル基およびイソプロピル基のどちらでもよい。単に「ブチル基」という場合は、n-ブチル基、イソブチル基、sec-ブチル基およびtert-ブチル基のいずれでもよい。
本実施形態に係る金属錯体触媒は、一般式(1)~(7)のいずれかで表される金属錯体触媒、その異性体、または、前記錯体もしくは異性体の塩を有効成分として含む。例えば、上記配位子成分の1または複数種の配位子を、一般式(1)~(7)のいずれかの金属成分と混合して金属錯体触媒としてもよいし、はじめから配位子成分と金属成分を混合して、金属錯体触媒を合成単離して用いてもよい。また、他の成分を適宜(好ましくは、10wt%未満)添加して用いてもよい。
次に実施例を挙げ、本発明を更に詳しく説明するが、本発明はこれら実施例に何ら制約されるものではない。なお、以下の実施例において、各種成分の添加量を示す数値の単位%は、質量%を意味する。
[合成例1]
[錯体合成]
触媒配位子(0.1mmol)と[Cp*Ir(H2O)]SO4(47.8mg、0.1mmol)を水中30℃で12時間撹拌した。反応溶液を減圧下濃縮し、得られた生成物を減圧下12時間乾燥し、金属錯体触媒(8)~(10)を得た。なお、錯体触媒(8)の合成に用いた配位子は、4,4‘-ジヒドロキシ-2,2’-ビピリジンであり、錯体触媒(9)の合成に用いた配位子は、4-ヒドロキシ-N-メチルピコリンアミドであり、錯体触媒(10)の合成に用いた配位子は、4-ヒドロキシ-N-フェニルピコリンアミドである。これらの配位子は、市販されているか又は当業者に公知の方法により合成することができる。以下、合成した触媒の分析値を示す。

[実施例1]
合成例1で合成した錯体触媒20μmolを1.5M炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(6mL)に溶解させ負極電解液を調製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(5.4mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.6mL)を加え正極電解液を調製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積5cm2)を作製した。調製した正負極の電解液を25mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して充放電試験を実施した。充放電試験中、負極電解液にはCO2(5mL/min)を流通させている。充電条件は、15mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が2.5Vに到達するまで充電を行った。放電条件は、-15mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が0Vに到達するまで放電を行った。想定される正負極の反応は以下の通りである。
合成例1で合成した錯体触媒20μmolを1.5M炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(6mL)に溶解させ負極電解液を調製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(5.4mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.6mL)を加え正極電解液を調製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積5cm2)を作製した。調製した正負極の電解液を25mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して充放電試験を実施した。充放電試験中、負極電解液にはCO2(5mL/min)を流通させている。充電条件は、15mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が2.5Vに到達するまで充電を行った。放電条件は、-15mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が0Vに到達するまで放電を行った。想定される正負極の反応は以下の通りである。

錯体触媒(8)~(12)のそれぞれを添加した負極電解液を導入した小型セルを用いて行った充放電試験の結果を図2A~図2Eに、錯体触媒(9)を用いたときの充放電時の生成物のHPLCによる分析結果を図2Fに、また、充放電特性を表1に示した。
[実施例2]
合成例1で合成した錯体触媒(9)20μmolを1.5Mの炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(3mL)に溶解させ負極電解液を調製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(2.7mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV4+OSO4/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.3mL)を加え正極電解液を調製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積1cm2)を作製した。調製した正負極の電解液を5mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して充放電試験を実施した。充放電試験中、負極電解液にはCO2(5mL/min)を流通させている。充電条件は、3mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が2.5Vに到達するまで充電を行った。放電条件は、-3mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が0Vに到達するまで放電を行った。充放電試験曲線を図3に、充放電特性を表2に示した。10サイクル後の放電容量、クーロン効率はそれぞれ5mAh、86%であった。2サイクル目を基準にした10サイクル後の容量保持率は80%であった。なお、放電容量、クーロン効率、容量保持率は実施例1と同様の式に従い算出した。
合成例1で合成した錯体触媒(9)20μmolを1.5Mの炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(3mL)に溶解させ負極電解液を調製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(2.7mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV4+OSO4/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.3mL)を加え正極電解液を調製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積1cm2)を作製した。調製した正負極の電解液を5mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して充放電試験を実施した。充放電試験中、負極電解液にはCO2(5mL/min)を流通させている。充電条件は、3mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が2.5Vに到達するまで充電を行った。放電条件は、-3mAの定電流とし、セル電圧が0Vに到達するまで放電を行った。充放電試験曲線を図3に、充放電特性を表2に示した。10サイクル後の放電容量、クーロン効率はそれぞれ5mAh、86%であった。2サイクル目を基準にした10サイクル後の容量保持率は80%であった。なお、放電容量、クーロン効率、容量保持率は実施例1と同様の式に従い算出した。
[比較例1]
1.5Mの炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(6mL)に錯体触媒を添加せずに負極電解液を調製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(5.4mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.6mL)を加え正極電解液を調製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積5cm2)を作製した。負極電解液へのCO2の流通は行わず、調製した正負極の電解液を15mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して、実施例1と同一の条件で充放電試験を実施した。その結果を図4Aに示す。図4Aの結果は、錯体触媒とCO2が存在しない条件では電池は動作しないことを示している。

[比較例2]
合成例1で合成した錯体触媒(9)20μmolを1.5M炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(6mL)に溶解させ負極電解液を調製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(5.4mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.6mL)を加え正極電解液を調製した。1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液は1.0MのV4+OSO4/3MのH2SO4溶液は電気化学的に酸化して調製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積5cm2)を作製した。負極電解液へのCO2の流通は行わず、調製した正負極の電解液を25mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して、実施例1と同一の条件で充放電試験を実施した。その結果を図4Bに示す。図4Bの結果は、CO2が存在しない条件では電池は動作しないことを示している。

[比較例3]
1.5Mの炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(6mL)に錯体触媒を添加せずに負極電解液を作製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(5.4mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.6mL)を加え正極電解液を作製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積5cm2)を作製した。充放電試験中、負極電解液にはCO2(5mL/min)を流通させている。作製した正負極の電解液を25mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して、実施例1と同一の条件で充放電試験を実施したが、電池として動作しなかった(図4C)。この結果は、錯体触媒が存在しない条件では電池は動作しないことを示している。
1.5Mの炭酸水素カリウム水溶液(6mL)に錯体触媒を添加せずに負極電解液を作製した。1.1MのH2SO4水溶液(5.4mL)にMnSO4、TiOSO4をそれぞれ0.6mmol溶解させた後、1.0MのV5+/3MのH2SO4溶液(0.6mL)を加え正極電解液を作製した。各極の電極にはカーボンフェルト、隔膜にはカチオン交換膜を用いて小型セル(電極面積5cm2)を作製した。充放電試験中、負極電解液にはCO2(5mL/min)を流通させている。作製した正負極の電解液を25mL/minの速度で小型セルに導入して、実施例1と同一の条件で充放電試験を実施したが、電池として動作しなかった(図4C)。この結果は、錯体触媒が存在しない条件では電池は動作しないことを示している。
本発明のレドックスフロー電池は、太陽光発電、風力発電などの自然エネルギーの発電に対して、発電出力の安定化、余剰電力の蓄電、負荷平衡化などを目的とした大容量の蓄電池に好適に利用することができる。また、充電反応時には二酸化炭素を還元してその還元体の形態で貯蔵することができることからCO2の排出削減にも一定の効果を有すると考えられる。
Claims (10)
- 少なくとも一対の正極及び負極と、
二酸化炭素及びその還元体からなる負極レドックス対を含む負極電解液と、
正極レドックス対を含む正極電解液と、
前記正極電解液及び負極電解液の間でそれぞれのレドックス対を隔離するとともに、プロトンを伝導する陽イオン交換膜からなるセパレータと、
前記負極レドックス対を酸化還元しうる金属錯体触媒と、
を備え、
前記金属錯体触媒が、前記負極表面に担持されるか、及び/又は前記負極電解液中に含まれるレドックスフロー電池システム。 - 前記金属錯体触媒が、下記式(3)~(7):
のいずれかで表される金属錯体、その異性体又はそれらの塩である請求項1~3のいずれか一項に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。 - 前記金属錯体触媒が、前記負極電解液中に含まれる請求項1~4のいずれか一項に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。
- 前記二酸化炭素の還元体が、ギ酸、シュウ酸又はそれらの塩である請求項1~5のいずれか一項に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。
- 前記正極レドックス対が、臭素-臭化物、塩素-塩化物、ヨウ素-ヨウ化物、バナジウム(IV)-バナジウム(V)、クロム(III)-二クロム酸塩(VI)、セリウム(III)-セリウム(IV)及びマンガン(II)-マンガン(III)からなる群より選択されるレドックス対である請求項1~6のいずれか一項に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。
- 前記正極レドックス対がマンガン(II)-マンガン(III)レドックス対であるとき、前記正極電解液は、反応性金属イオンを含有し、前記反応性金属イオンは、バナジウムイオン、チタンイオン、クロムイオン、亜鉛イオン、鉄イオン、コバルトイオン、銅イオン、モリブデンイオン、ルテニウムイオン、パラジウムイオン、銀イオン、タングステンイオン、水銀イオン及びセリウムイオンからなる群より選択される少なくとも一種である請求項7に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。
- 前記負極が、ガス拡散型電極、触媒被覆膜、トリクルベッド電極及び金属有機構造体(MOF)からなる群より選択される高表面積多孔性電極である、請求項1~8のいずれか一項に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。
- 前記負極電解液へ二酸化炭素ガスを供給する手段、及び/又は前記負極電解液から二酸化炭素ガスを回収する手段をさらに備える請求項1~9のいずれか一項に記載のレドックスフロー電池システム。
