Definitions
- the invention relates to a composition for use as a repellent, biocide or pesticide containing (i) a volatile active ingredient and (ii) a cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivative and (iii) a humectant in a solvent.
- a formulation containing this composition can be used, for example, as a crop protection agent, as a biocide or else in other areas such as the perfume industry, the cleaning agent industry, the cosmetics industry or others.
- a further object of the invention is therefore a formulation containing this composition, characterized in that it is used as a repellent, biocide or pesticide.
- methods for repelling pigeons and protecting against insects characterized in that the formulation is applied to a surface, are the subject of the invention.
- Some active ingredients have an increased vapor pressure due to their molecular structure. This vapor pressure means that the active ingredients are volatile. In some cases, this property is a prerequisite for the substance to have any effect at all, such as insect repellents, which can only function in the gas space. This consists in the insect repellents docking onto the insect's receptors in order to trigger a defensive reaction. In other cases, volatile substances have a specific effect that is unrelated to vapor pressure. This applies, for example, to essential oils which, depending on the type of molecule, are bactericidal or fungicidal or can also have other properties. Another example of volatile active ingredients are perfumes that only due to their volatility can reach the olfactory organs of people, for example.
- Insect repellents are synthetic active ingredients such as DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Icaridin (1-(1-methylpropoxycarbonyl)-2-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperidine), IR3535 (ethylbutyl acetylaminopropionate) or but also essential oils such as citronella oil, geraniol or Citriodiol®, which is also called PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol). These are placed in a suitable solvent such as an aqueous-ethanolic solution and then applied to surfaces such as the skin or textiles. The insect repellent active ingredient evaporates and forms a barrier around the treated surface.
- DEET N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide
- Icaridin 1-(1-methylpropoxycarbonyl)-2-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperidine
- IR3535 ethylbutyl acetylaminoprop
- volatile pyrethrins or pyrethroids which can be used to both repel and control insects. The following substances can be mentioned as examples of the representatives of these volatile pyrethroids: empenthrin, profluthrin, transfluthrin, furamethrin, metofluthrin, allethrin, prallethrin, phenothrin or else permethrin.
- active ingredients are also processed in suitable formulations and applied to surfaces to repel or control insects. These active ingredients can either also have a repellent effect if they act on insects in the gas space or else have a toxic effect if the insects come into direct contact with treated surfaces. An effect will only occur as long as the active ingredient is present at the site of action.
- volatile insect pheromones which are used, for example, to confuse pests in order to prevent them from reproducing.
- Suitable formulations of these active ingredients are sprayed onto the foliage of fruit trees, for example, in order to prevent the fruit from multiplying and being attacked by harmful insects.
- the duration of action is limited to the period in which the pheromones are detectable by insects in the ambient air.
- volatile active substances are used in a suitable formulation in order to achieve a specific effect.
- this can be a pesticidal, biocidal, purely olfactory application or another application.
- the application rate depends on the type of product and the use.
- There are different methods to reduce the volatility of volatile substances in compositions such as the use of polymers. These affect the viscosity of formulations, resulting in delayed release of the active ingredient.
- Another method is the micro-encapsulation of volatile active ingredients or the use of so-called fixatives, with which volatile substances form a physical bond, which also reduces their volatility.
- the volatility of volatile substances can be very elegantly reduced with the aid of cyclodextrins.
- Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides containing six ( ⁇ -), seven (ß-) or eight (g-) D-glucopyranose units connected to one another via ⁇ -(1,4) bonds and which are obtained enzymatically from starch. Due to their circular molecular structure with a hydrophobic cavity, cyclodextrins can form reversible complexes with hydrophobic guest molecules. Due to the hydrophilic surface of cyclodextrins, they can be used to improve the water solubility of hydrophobic substances. At the same time, it is possible to reduce the volatility of volatile substances by forming complexes with cyclodextrins and to achieve delayed release.
- a prerequisite for the formation of cyclodextrin complexes is a suitable size and geometry of the guest molecule, so that it can at least partially fit into the cavity of the cyclodextrin in order to form intermolecular interactions.
- the guest molecules must have hydrophobic molecular areas. If cyclodextrin complexes are dissolved in water, an equilibrium is quickly established between the free guest, cyclodextrin and the cyclodextrin complex, which is the prerequisite for the delayed release of the active substance.
- the guest-host ratio in the cyclodextrin complex is usually 1:1. However, 2:1, 1:2 and 2:2 complexes can also form.
- Patent WO18050211 describes the combination of volatile insect repellents with cyclodextrins. As a result, the release rate of the insect repellent active ingredients can be reduced, which means that the duration of action of the products can be extended.
- Japanese patent JP8133907 describes the use of cyclodextrins to improve the longevity of volatile pyrethroids.
- cyclodextrins are combined with volatile substances, which results in the formation of termolecular interactions between the two classes of molecules mentioned. This reduces the release of the volatile components to such an extent that the duration of action can be extended.
- One commercial product for example, is the insect repellent Pastor ® 34, which, in addition to the volatile active ingredient DEET, also contains methylated beta-cyclodextrin. The product is sprayed onto the skin to provide protection against annoying mosquitoes for a period of 12 hours.
- the mechanism of action is that DEET blocks the insects' scent receptors so that they can no longer perceive substances from the victims, such as lactic acid and carbon dioxide.
- insects can also perceive DEET through their olfactory receptors and therefore stay away from the treated surfaces.
- Geraniol-based repellents against pigeons can be cited as an example.
- an aqueous-ethanolic geraniol solution was applied at an application rate of 0.5 g geraniol per m 2 area.
- Geraniol is a volatile essential oil that has a repellent effect on pigeons.
- pigeons can only be repelled for a single day.
- the effect was enhanced by the addition of methylated beta-cyclodextrin, which was added in an equimolar ratio to geraniol. A prolongation of the effect by a further day could be observed.
- the cyclodextrin meant that it was volatile geraniol formed a complex so that the volatile geraniol evaporated from the treated surface to a lesser extent, allowing it to repel the pigeons for a longer period of time.
- the formulation on the treated surfaces dried up after the second day and thus lost its effectiveness.
- the release of geraniol from the surface-treated formulation continued.
- one would like to achieve that the release of the active ingredient lasts uninterruptedly until it has completely evaporated.
- the task was therefore to provide a composition for use as a repellent, biocide or pesticide, which is based on a volatile active ingredient and has an extended duration of action or increased effectiveness compared to a composition based on a volatile active ingredient mixed with a cyclodextrin or Has cyclodextrin derivative, so that this is particularly effective and economical.
- compositions for use as a repellent, biocide or pesticide containing a volatile active ingredient (i) and a cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivative (ii) and a humectant (iii) in a solvent.
- the composition for use as a repellent, biocide or pesticide consists of a volatile active substance (i) and a cyclodextrin or cyclodextrin derivative (ii) and a humectant (iii) in a solvent.
- a humectant (iii) to a composition containing Cyclodextrins or cyclodextrin derivatives (ii) and volatile active ingredients (i) could ensure maintenance of the release of the volatile substances from the cyclodextrin complex.
- the release of the active substance continued until it had completely passed into the gas space.
- the humectant does not reduce the effect of the volatile active ingredient, but actually increases it. Since the active ingredient does not have to be applied as frequently for the same effect in the presence of a humectant (iii), time can be saved, for example for the additional work involved in repeated application of the active ingredient, and costs, for example for the expensive active ingredient.
- a repellent is a substance that is usually perceived by an organism through its sense of smell and that deters it without killing it (e.g. incense, protective coatings, etc.).
- Repellents are used against various organisms that are viewed by the user as "harmful organisms" or organisms that are undesirable in a particular location.
- repelling biting insects is a strong human need in many areas.
- Bird repellent aims to attract birds
- measures to repel or deter city pigeons are taken, especially in inner cities, to reduce the size of the population of the city pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica). to limit.
- a repellent can also be a biocide, ie an agent for repelling or killing insects that is not used in agriculture and not in crop protection, but in particular for the protection of stored products and materials, in animal breeding including livestock farming, in the hygiene sector and in private households.
- a pesticide is a pesticide. Many different chemical-synthetic substances and substance combinations that have a toxic effect on undesirable organisms (animals or plants) in the respective area of application are referred to as pesticides.
- humectants (iii) can bind moisture from the ambient air. This moisture is then released into the formulation so that it does not dry out. As a result, an uninterrupted release of the complexed active ingredients from the cyclodextrin complex can take place.
- Humectants are substances that can bind water due to their molecular structure. This applies above all to molecules that carry hydroxyl groups, such as polyglycols or sugars. In addition, some inorganic salts of organic acids show pronounced hygroscopicity.

- an increase in the relative effectiveness of at least 50% means that the average protection time against an insect bite, i.e. the time until the second insect bite, increases from 2.5 hours to at least 3.75 hours.
- the repellent effect of the formulations was examined on free-living pigeons.

Description
untersucht, also Mücken ausgesetzt.
