Description

ORAL FRESHNESS COMPOSITION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of oral freshness products for improving mouth hygiene, freshness and wellness of a user. It relates to oral products that, similar to snuff products, are provided in small cellulose pouches for easy adaption under the lip of a user. The products are tobacco and nicotine free and are intended to provide mouth freshness and energy to the user.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
As of today, there are many products on the market for improving the mouth hygiene and the general mouth freshness of a user. There are also similar products which are more focused on assisting in fighting caries and gum disease, such as toothpastes and mouth washes containing fluoride. Products in this field also include chewing gums which are intended to stop the acidic process in the mouth after a meal which can lead to tooth decay. All in all, the oral care industry, including chewing gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, breath fresheners and mints is an industry that is continuously developing and growing.
In addition, sport and energy drinks are continuously becoming more popular.
Smokeless tobacco products for oral use, such as snuff, are very common in some countries, particularly Sweden. These products are available in loose form or as portion-packed in a soft material formed from a small pouch. The pouch is typically used by the user by placing the pouch containing the snuff product between the upper or lower gum and the lip, or in the cheek and then maintaining it there for a while until the contents of the product has been released into the mouth. Accordingly, the pouch material is permeable and releases parts of the snuff products continuously when placed in the mouth of the user. The pouch material holds the snuff product in place and should be formed from a material convenient for the user to have positioned against the sensitive mucous membrane in the mouth.
As tobacco products contain nicotine and other products that are not healthy for the user, there is of course always a need to lessen the use of such products in the society, or at least to provide alternatives thereto which are less damaging to the health. In addition, smokeless tobacco products are also associated with a general odour that is not pleasant for the user or to the surroundings of the user. More importantly, snuff products provide damage to the gum of the long-term user. Chewing gum is a product used by most people in the western world today. Even if chewing gum has benefits for the general mouth health and well-being of the user it is presented with other problems such as littering, being a product which is not easily broken down by nature.
As mentioned above, energy drinks are also widely used today. There is always a need to find new alternatives to energy drinks and in particular products that provide beneficial effects in addition to an energizing effect of an energy drink.
Taken the above into account, there is still a need in the art to identify products for improving mouth health and general mouth well-being of users, which will also lessen the need for other products having similar effects but being associated with disadvantages affecting the health of the users and thereby the society. There is also a need to complement and replace energy drinks for active and aware people. Finally, there is a general need for new products within this area that will provide both similar effects to existing products, but which also provides additional beneficial effects to the user.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The above set drawbacks or problems have now been resolved, or at least mitigated, by the provision of a novel pouched oral freshness composition for easy application under the lip of the user. The composition of the present disclosure provides an optimized mix of ingredients or components which offers a surprisingly convenient texture for the user to place under the lip while at the same time providing freshness, energy and hygiene effects to the user.
The product is free from tobacco, nicotine and sugar and hence provides a healthy alternative also to users of such products.
Accordingly, there is provided by the present disclosure an oral freshness composition comprising the following components:
(i) A herbal tea composition, preferably yerba mate;
(ii) One or more flavouring agent(s);
(iii) Magnesium;
(iv) Zink;
(v) A pH regulating agent, such as Sodium carbonate;
(vi) Vitamin C;
(vii) Stevia;
(viii) Sodium fluoride;
(ix) Sodium chloride;
(x) Vitamin B;
(xi) Vitamin D; and (xii) optionally caffeine, wherein the herbal tea composition is present in an amount to form an aggregate oral freshness composition comprising components (i) to (xi) or (i) to (xii) when said herbal tea composition has been infused or mixed with components (ii) to (xi) or (ii) to (xii).
Alternatively, the herbal tea composition (i) is mixed thoroughly with the components (ii) to (xi) or (ii) to (xii) to form an aggregate composition. The mixing may include adding water to the composition.
Accordingly, the oral freshness composition can be provided with or without caffeine. Preferably, the product contains caffeine.
Preferably, the herbal tea composition is yerba mate or comprises yerba mate.
There is also provided a cellulose pouch for application under the lip of a user, said cellulose pouch comprising an oral freshness composition as defined herein.
There is also provided a container comprising one or more cellulose pouches comprising an oral composition as defined herein.
There is also provided the use of an oral freshness composition as defined herein or a cellulose pouch comprising such an oral freshness composition for strengthening the gum and/or teeth of a user. In addition, there is provided an oral freshness composition as defined herein for use in strengthening the gum and/or teeth of a user. There is also provided a method for strengthening the gum and/or teeth of a user, said method comprising applying a cellulose pouch comprising an oral freshness composition under the lip of a user as further defined herein. Said method may also comprise positioning the cellulose pouch comprising said oral freshness composition elsewhere in the mouth than under the lip, such as under the tongue or in the cheek of a user.
There is furthermore provided the use of an oral freshness composition as defined herein or a cellulose pouch comprising an oral freshness composition for generating a fresh breath of a user. There is furthermore provided the use for providing an energizing effect to and/or improved mouth health of a user.
There is also provided a method for preparing an oral freshness composition as defined herein, said method comprising mixing components (i) to (xi) or (i) to (xii) by infusing or mixing component (i) with components (ii) to (xi) or (i) to (xii) in a blender or mixer or the like, until components (i) to (xi) or (i) to (xii) have aggregated or formed an aggregation. Aggregating in this regard means that the components of the composition are merged conveniently and small grains from the aggregate are not easily released therefrom. There is also provided an oral freshness composition obtained by a method for preparing an oral freshness composition as defined herein.
There is also provided a cellulose pouch comprising an oral freshness product obtained by a method as defined herein.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Definitions
All words and terms used herein shall be considered to have the same meaning usually given to them by the person skilled in the art unless another meaning is apparent from the context.
The singular “a” and “an” shall be construed as including also the plural.
Compositions “comprising” one or more recited elements may also include other elements not specifically recited.
Herein, the terms percent per weight, % by weight, % per dry weight and the like, may be used interchangeably. It is referred to herein a % dry weight of some components.
The term “oral composition” is used herein to define a composition which is suitable for the user to place in the oral cavity. A composition is suitable if it has a texture, odour, taste and content to make it suitable for this purpose.
A “flavouring agent” is a compound or substance that is used in an oral composition of the present disclosure to affect the taste of the composition.
Herein, when it is referred to “a herbal tea” or “a herbal tea composition” being present in an amount sufficient to form an aggregate oral freshness composition comprising components (i) to (xii) or (i) to (xi) when said herbal tea composition has been infused or mixed with components (ii) to (xi) or (ii) to (xii)” this is intended to mean that the resulting composition forms a blend or mixture where the components are held or aggregated together in one piece. This is also referred to herein as an “aggregate oral freshness composition”.
A “pouch” herein, usually made from a cellulosic material is a form of a small, soft, sealed but permeable bag for keeping an oral composition of the present disclosure. The pouch is made from a permeable material that allows substances from the composition to travel through the material for release into the oral cavity of the user. The pouch is made from a material that is comfortable for the user to position under the lip. The pouch may also be freely positioned elsewhere in the mouth, i.e. other than under the lip of a user, i.e. the user may carefully chew or suck the pouch. A “cellulose pouch” as referred to herein means that the material for the pouch includes cellulose, but it may also include other constituents suitable for the purpose of the pouch. Suitable sizes for the pouch are further described herein.
Detailed description
The present disclosure is directed to an oral freshness and/or hygiene composition for positioning in the mouth of a user, preferably under the lip, providing said user with a hygienic mouth freshness while boosting the user’s energy levels and lessening the need for other similar oral products that are less healthy both for the user and for the society. In addition, it provides an alternative for users of energy drinks, which may damage the teeth of the user in view of the acidic nature of the drink.
The oral composition comprising the carefully selected ingredients as defined herein provides a composition coming together as one single entity the texture thereof making it suitable for packaging in a permeable cellulose pouch for subsequent oral use. As mentioned, the pouch is preferably placed under the lip of the user. The coming together of the composition into one entity or aggregate avoids grainy parts of the composition leaking out from the pouch causing discomfort for the user. The composition is also suitable not only for positioning under the lip, but it can be positioned elsewhere in the mouth of a user to allow the user to suck or chew the composition. This provides a product that appeals to many users as it solves the problem of providing an alternative to previous users of chewing gum, snuff and/or energy drinks. Accordingly, it is not only a replacement or alternative product for a user of e.g. snuff. As mentioned elsewhere herein, according to the best knowledge of the inventor this is the first product made available of this type.
The texture of the composition and the softness of the cellulose material presents the user with an appealing combination for comfortable positioning in the mouth. Accordingly, the composition provides both freshness to the mouth and also an energy boost to the user by virtue of the inventive combination of ingredients provided by the present disclosure. This can also function as an alternative to energy drinks which excessive use is associated with disadvantages.
According to the best knowledge of the inventor, this is the first product made available of this type. The product does not contain nicotine or tobacco but may for some users of such products present an attractive and healthier alternative. The specific blend of ingredients as presented herein was shown to result in a particularly useful texture for a product for use as disclosed herein. In addition, it was capable of providing sought-after effects, a feeling of freshness and energy while at the same time reducing any potential odour from the users mouth. Accordingly, the product may also be seen as an alternative to several products, including energy drinks and chewing gums.
The composition of the present disclosure is preferably manufactured by infusing the herbal tea composition (e.g. yerba mate or a herbal tea composition comprising yerba mate) with all other ingredients or components of the composition in a blender or mixer, to result in a blend or mixture, wherein the herbal tea composition of choice binds together all components into one single entity or aggregate or the like. A single entity herein is intended to mean that the ingredients of the composition are essentially held together by virtue of the texture of the composition, forming an aggregate or the like. Naturally, the herbal tea composition is the main ingredient of the composition as disclosed herein, the amount of the total composition being provided elsewhere herein. Herein it was shown that the herbal tea composition yerba mate or a composition comprising yerba mate was a particularly useful ingredient for the purpose of the oral composition of the present disclosure. Yerba mate surprisingly provided superior properties to the composition for its intended use as described further herein. A herbal tea composition comprising yerba mate can be defined as a herbal tea composition that comprises mainly or essentially of yerba mate but which may contain other similar herbal teas that will create at least the same sense of comfort in the mouth. It is also envisaged by the present disclosure a herbal tea composition possessing similar functional and/or structural characteristics to yerba mate, which is also encompassed by the present disclosure. Further characteristics of the herbal tea composition is described elsewhere herein.
The composition blend or mixture is then run in a portioning machine that portions the composition into small pouches (such as 14x30 mm) made of cellulose paper. The cellulose paper may be colored. When adding the composition blend to the machine, it is evenly distributed in the pipe, and thereafter covered by the cellulose paper. Once the composition has been weighted up in suitable portions, the pouch is sealed by lamination on both ends before it is cut according to a pre-installed size of 14x30 mm, but of course the size of the pouches are not limited thereto. Other sizes are also envisaged for the pouch, but the size will be prepared so that it is suitable for positioning in the mouth under the lip of the user.
As such, a major aim of the oral composition of the present disclosure was to generate fresh breath, to reduce volatile sulphur compounds, and/or also to some extent strengthen the gum and/or teeth of the user. The composition and the mix of ingredients disclosed herein was proven to be superior in this regard.
Again, this is the first time, to the inventor’s best knowledge, that a product such as the present one successfully has been produced. Being a healthier alternative both to snuff products, energy drinks and chewing gum is also particularly beneficial. It was not expected that a product such as the presently disclosed product could provide all the beneficial properties both in relation to the texture, but also in relation to the other effects presented to the user. In this regard, using yerba mate as the herbal tea composition, or comprised in the herbal tea composition, for this purpose was believed to be particularly useful.
As caffeine and/or antioxidants (Vitamin C) may be infused into the blend, the oral composition may also have beneficial effects on the user’s energy levels.
Zink is also capable to while used in the present composition provide a reduction on any odors developed in the mouth of the user.
Accordingly, there is provided herein an oral freshness composition comprising the following components:

The herbal tea composition used is preferably yerba mate, or comprises yerba mate, but it may also be selected from similar herbal tea products providing the same functional and/or structural characteristics. Still, in the present context it was believed that yerba mate was the product of choice assisting in all the beneficial properties provided by the present composition.
Yerba mate ( ilex paraguarensis) is a South American tea plant that grows in large parts of Argentina, Chile, Peru and Brasil. Yerba mate can be obtained from most well-sorted health food stores. As mentioned previously herein, the herbal tea composition used in the context of the present disclosure is preferably yerba mate or comprises yerba mate. To the inventor’s best knowledge, this is the first time that yerba mate has been used in a product for the present purpose. In this regard, the inventor surprisingly found that yerba mate presented superior properties when blended with the other ingredients of the composition. All in all, this provided a composition that was capable of providing the user with a great experience, both in terms of flavour and effect e.g. on the breath, but also in view of its texture that was perceived as comfortable when present in a pouch and placed under the lip or elsewhere in the mount of the user. Yerba mate tea composition is hence made from dried leaves from the yerba mate plant, accordingly a herbal tea composition as used herein is intended as a composition made from dried leaves as is generally the major basis for a herbal tea composition.

EXAMPLE 1
Preparations of the compositions
The ingredients of Table 1 and Table 2 can easily be obtained from suitable manufacturers and are provided as dry ingredients.
The dry ingredients of Table 1 or 2 are mixed to a homogenous blend and thereafter liquids are added. By infusing the yerba mate (i.e. the herbal tea) with all the ingredients in a specialized blender, the herbal tea composition merges together all components into one aggregate composition as previously described herein.
The specialized blender is a blender normally used for blending snuff products.
Preferably, the thereafter obtained composition is left to rest for 12-24 h before packaging.
The composition is run in a machine that portions it out into small pouches (14x30 mm) made out of cellulose paper (colored). The cellulose pouches. The cellulose pouches are pouches commonly used for packaging snuff products.
When adding the blend to the machine, it is thereafter evenly distributed in the pipe of the machine, subsequently covered by the paper (cellulose pouches), and once weighted up, laminated on both ends before cutting the pouches according to the pre-installed size of 14x30 mm.
The weight of the pouch produced by the present method is approximately 200 mg, of which 100 mg comprises herbal tea composition (yerba mate).
The products are also checked for any unwished presence of bacterial growth after some storage time.
EXAMPLE 2
Cellulose pouches comprising the above compositions were given to ten adult persons between the ages 15 and 55 years. All users placed the cellulose pouches under their lip and left it there for at least 3 minutes which is enough time for the small contents of the cellulose pouches to diffuse through the cellulose paper and affect the user. All users experienced that the cellulose pouches were convenient to use and comfortable to place under the lip.
All users experienced a freshness sensation after a few minutes of using the composition.
Some of the users experienced a somewhat energizing effect after a few minutes of placing the pouch under the lip of the user.
None of the users experienced discomfort when placing the pouch under the lip.
