Abstract

본 발명은 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 촉매층은 전기 전도성 소재로, 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공되고, 설정 간격 이격되어 배열되는 복수의 촉매지지체; 이온 전도성 물질로, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에 위치되는 이온 전도 채널; 설정 크기의 입자 형태로 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 촉매; 및 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 이오노머를 포함한다.

Description

촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지
본 발명은 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세히 전기화학적 반응의 반응성이 향상되는 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지에 관한 것이다.
연료전지는 연료와 산소를 전기화학적으로 반응하는 자유에너지의 변화를 전기에너지로 변환시키는 장치이다.
고분자전해질 연료전지는 수소이온교환 특성을 갖는 고분자막을 전해질로 사용하는 연료전지로서 다른 형태의 연료전지에 비하여 작동온도가 낮은 고분자전해질 연료전지는 효율이 높고 전류밀도 및 출력밀도가 크며 시동시간이 짧은 동시에 부하변화에 대한 응답특성이 빠른 특성이 있다. 또한, 셀 저항이 낮기 때문에 고출력밀도가 얻어져 소형 및 경량화가 가능하며, 특히 전해질을 고분자막으로 사용하기 때문에 전해질 손실이 없고, 기존의 확립된 기술인 메탄올 개질기의 적용이 가능하며, 반응기체 압력변화에도 덜 민감하다. 또한 디자인이 간단하고 제작이 쉬우며 연료전지 본체재료로 여러 가지를 사용할 수 있는 동시에, 부피와 무게도 작동원리가 같은 인산연료전지에 비해 작다. 이러한 특성 이외에도 다양한 범위의 출력을 낼 수 있는 장점이 있기 때문에 고분자전해질 연료전지는 무공해 차량의 동력원, 현지 설치형 발전, 우주선용 전원, 이동용 전원, 군사용 전원 등 매우 다양한 분야에 응용될 수 있다. 또한, 수소를 연료로 사용할 경우, 순수한 물만이 배출이 되어 미래의 청정에너지원으로 사용될 수 있는 장점으로 많은 관심을 받고 있다.
본 발명은 전기화학적 반응의 반응성이 향상되는 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지를 제공하기 위한 것이다.
또한, 본 발명은 이온 전도 채널을 갖는 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지를 제공하기 위한 것이다.
또한, 본 발명은 상대적으로 낮은 이오노머 부피 분률에서도 이온전도에 유효하게 기여하는 유효 이오노머의 비율이 높은 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지를 제공하기 위한 것이다.
또한, 본 발명은 상대적으로 낮은 이오노머 부피 분률에서도 전기화학적 반응에 유효하게 기여하는 유효 촉매의 비율이 높은 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지를 제공하기 위한 것이다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 전기 전도성 소재로, 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공되고, 설정 간격 이격되어 배열되는 복수의 촉매지지체; 이온 전도성 물질로, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에 위치되는 이온 전도 채널; 설정 크기의 입자 형태로 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 촉매; 및 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 이오노머를 포함하는 촉매층이 제공될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에는, 상기 촉매지지체의 길이 방향을 따라 형성되고 일단이 외부와 연결되게 형성되는 제1 연통부; 및 상기 제1 연통부와 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면을 연결하도록 형성되는 제2 연통부가 형성되고, 상기 이온 전도 채널은 상기 제1 연통부 및 상기 제2 연통부에 상기 이온 전도성 물질이 채워져 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 제2 연통부는 상기 촉매지지체의 둘레 방향을 따라 복수 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 제2 연통부는 상기 촉매지지체의 길이 방향을 따라 복수 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 촉매지지체는 전기전도성 고내식성 산화물, 전기전도성 고분자 또는 전기전도성의 탄소 동소체일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 이온 전도 물질은 퍼플루오로술폰산 계열 화합물 또는 이온전도성 고분자 물질일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 이오노머의 부피 분률은 0.07 이상 0.25이하일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 이오노머의 부피 분률은 0.07 이상 0.12이하일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 이오노머의 부피 분률은 0.12 이상 0.17 이하일 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 측면에 따르면, 연료극 촉매층; 공기극 촉매층; 및 상기 연료극 촉매층 및 상기 공기극 촉매층 사이에 위치되어, 양이온을 상기 연료극 촉매층에서 상기 공기극 촉매층으로 전달하는 고분자 전해질막을 포함하되, 상기 연료극 촉매층 또는 상기 공기극 촉매층은, 전기 전도성 소재로, 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공되고, 설정 간격 이격되어 배열되는 복수의 촉매지지체; 이온 전도성 물질로, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에 위치되는 이온 전도 채널; 설정 크기의 입자 형태로 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 촉매; 및 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 이오노머를 포함하는 연료 전지가 제공될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에는, 상기 촉매지지체의 길이 방향을 따라 형성되고 일단이 외부와 연결되게 형성되는 제1 연통부; 및 상기 제1 연통부와 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면을 연결하도록 형성되는 제2 연통부가 형성되고, 상기 이온 전도 채널은 상기 제1 연통부 및 상기 제2 연통부에 상기 이온 전도성 물질이 채워져 형성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시 예에 의하면, 전기화학적 반응의 반응성이 향상되는 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지가 제공될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 의하면, 이온 전도 채널을 갖는 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지가 제공될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 의하면, 상대적으로 낮은 이오노머 부피 분률에서도 이온전도에 유효하게 기여하는 유효 이오노머의 비율이 높은 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지가 제공될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 의하면, 상대적으로 낮은 이오노머 부피 분률에서도 전기화학적 반응에 유효하게 기여하는 유효 촉매의 비율이 높은 촉매층 및 이를 포함하는 연료전지가 제공될 수 있다.

본 발명에 따른 촉매층은 전기 전도성 소재로, 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공되고, 설정 간격 이격되어 배열되는 복수의 촉매지지체; 이온 전도성 물질로, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에 위치되는 이온 전도 채널; 설정 크기의 입자 형태로 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 촉매; 및 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 이오노머를 포함할 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명의 실시 예를 첨부된 도면들을 참조하여 더욱 상세하게 설명한다.
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 연료전지를 나타내는 도면이다.
도 1을 참조하면, 연료전지(10)는 고분자 전해질막(11), 연료극 촉매층(12) 및 공기극 촉매층(13)을 포함한다.
고분자 전해질막(11)은 양이온을 연료극 촉매층(12)에서 공기극 촉매층(13)으로 전달한다. 고분자 전해질막(11)은 탄화수소계의 고분자 전해질이 막 구조로 형성될 수 있다. 탄화수소계의 고분자 전해질로서는 주사슬이 지방족 탄화수소로 구성되는 탄화수소계 고분자, 주사슬이 지방족 탄화수소로 구성되며 주사슬의 일부 또는 전부의 수소 원자가 불소 원자로 치환된 고분자, 주사슬이 방향족고리를 가지는 고분자 등을 들 수 있다. 또한 고분자 전해질은 산성기를 가지는 고분자 전해질일 수 있다. 이때 산성기는 설폰산기, 설폰이미드기, 카르복실산기, 포스폰산기, 인산기, 페놀성 수산기 등일 수 있다.
연료극 촉매층(12) 및 공기극 촉매층(13)은 고분자 전해질막(11)을 기준으로 서로 반대 방향에 각각 위치된다.
연료극 촉매층(12)은 연료의 산화 반응을 통해, 전자와 양이온을 생성한다. 연료극 촉매층(12)에서 산화되는 연료는 수소 등일 수 있다.
공기극 촉매층(13)은 연료극 촉매층(12)에서 발생된 후 고분자 전해질막(11)을 통해 전달된 양이온과 산화제를 반응시킨다. 일 예로, 산화제는 산소를 포함하는 공기 등일 수 있다.
연료극 촉매층(12)의 외측, 공기극 촉매층(13)의 외측에는 가스 확산층(14, 15)이 각각 위치될 수 있다. 가스 확산층(14, 15)은 각각 연료극 촉매층(12), 공기극 촉매층(13)으로 연료, 산화제가 효과적으로 확산되고, 연료극 촉매층(12), 공기극 촉매층(13)이 건조되는 것을 억제한다. 가스 확산층(14, 15)은 도전성 다공질 소재로 제공될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 가스 확산층(14, 15)은 카본지, 카본 크로스, 카본 펠트 등의 탄소계 다공체 일 수 있다.
가스 확산층(14, 15)의 외측에는 각각 분리막(16, 17)이 위치될 수 있다. 분리막(16, 17)은 전자 전도성을 갖는 소재로 제공된다. 예를 들어, 분리막(16, 17)은 카본, 수지 몰드 카본, 티타늄, 스테인리스 등일 수 있다. 분리막(16, 17)에는 연료, 산화제가 유동하는 유로가 형성될 수 있다.
도 2 내지 도 5는 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 촉매층이 형성되는 과정을 나타내는 도면이다.
도 2는 촉매지지체가 형성된 상태를 나타내는 도면이고, 도 3은 이온 전도 채널이 형성된 상태를 나타내는 도면이고, 도 4는 촉매지지체의 외측면에 촉매가 부착된 상태를 나타내는 도면이고, 도 5는 촉매지지체의 외측면에 이오노머가 부착된 상태를 나타내는 도면이다.
도 2 내지 도 5에 따른 촉매층(100)은 도 1의 연료극 촉매층(12) 또는 공기극 촉매층(13)일 수 있다.
이하, 연료극 촉매층(12) 또는 공기극 촉매층(13)의 구분 없이, 하나의 촉매층(100)으로 하여 설명한다.
도 2 내지 도 5를 참조하면, 촉매층(100)은 촉매지지체(110), 이온 전도 채널(120), 촉매(130) 및 이오노머(140a, 140b)를 포함한다.
촉매지지체(110)는 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공된다. 촉매지지체(110)는 길이 방향이 고분자 전해질막(11)과 가스 확산층(14, 15)의 이격 방향을 향할 수 있다. 촉매지지체(110)는 복수가 서로 이격 되어 위치될 수 있다. 촉매지지체(110)는 전기 전도성 소재로 제공된다. 촉매지지체(110)는 니오븀 도핑된 이산화타이타늄(Nb-TiO2) 등과 같은 전기전도성 고내식성 산화물, 폴리아닐린 등과 같은 전기전도성 고분자, 카본블랙, 그래핀 등과 같은 전기전도성의 탄소 동소체 등이 바람직하다. 촉매지지체(110)는 전자가 이동되는 경로로 제공된다.
이온 전도 채널(120)은 촉매지지체(110)의 내측에 위치된다. 구체적으로, 촉매지지체(110)는 내측에 빈 공간이 연통부(111)가 형성된다. 그리고, 이온 전도 채널(120)은 연통부(111)에 이온 전도성 물질이 채워져 형성될 수 있다. 이온 전도성 물질은 내피온(Nafion, 듀퐁사, 상표명)과 같은 퍼플루오로술폰산 계열 화합물이나 기타 이온전도성 고분자 물질 등이 바람직하다.
촉매(130)는 설정 크기의 입자 형태로 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에 위치된다. 예를 들어, 촉매(130)는 백금, 루테늄, 이리듐, 로듐, 팔라듐, 오스니움, 텅스텐, 연, 철, 크롬, 코발트, 니켈, 망간, 바나듐, 몰리브덴, 갈륨, 알루미늄 등의 금속, 또는 이들의 합금 등일 수 있다. 촉매(130)는 연료가 산화되거나, 양이온과 산화제가 반응되게 한다.
이오노머(140a, 140b)는 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에 위치된다. 이오노머(140a, 140b)는 탄화수소계의 고분자 전해질일 수 있다. 탄화수소계의 고분자 전해질로서는 주사슬이 지방족 탄화수소로 구성되는 탄화수소계 고분자, 주사슬이 지방족 탄화수소로 구성되며 주사슬의 일부 또는 전부의 수소 원자가 불소 원자로 치환된 고분자, 주사슬이 방향족고리를 가지는 고분자 등을 들 수 있다. 또한 고분자 전해질은 산성기를 가지는 고분자 전해질일 수 있다. 이때 산성기는 설폰산기, 설폰이미드기, 카르복실산기, 포스폰산기, 인산기, 페놀성 수산기 등일 수 있다. 이오노머(140a, 140b)는 고분자 전해질막(11)과의 사이에 양이온이 전달되게 한다.
촉매층(100)에서 촉매지지체(110)로 채워지지 않은 공간(이하, 공극)은 연료, 산화제, 전기화학반응의 부산물이 수송되는 경로를 형성한다.
이하, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따라 촉매층(100)이 형성되는 과정의 모델링을 통해, 본 발명에 따른 촉매층(100)을 보다 구체적으로 설명한다.
도 2를 참조하면, 촉매지지체(110)는 기둥 형상의 구조로 제공된다. 일 실시 예에 따라 모델링된 촉매층(100)에서, 촉매지지체(110)는 외측면 사이의 직경이 50 nm가 되게 하였다.
촉매지지체(110)의 내측에는 연통부(111)가 형성된다. 연통부(111)는 제1 연통부(112) 및 제2 연통부(113)를 포함한다. 제1 연통부(112)는 촉매지지체(110)의 길이 방향을 따라 형성되고, 상단이 외부(고분자 전해질막(11))와 연결되게 형성된다. 일 실시 예에 따라 모델링된 촉매층(100)에서, 제1 연통부(112)의 직경은 20 nm로 하였다.
제2 연통부(113)는 제1 연통부(112)와 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면을 연결하도록 형성된다. 제2 연통부(113)는 촉매지지체(110)의 길이방향, 둘레 방향, 또는 길이방향 및 둘레 방향을 따라 복수 형성된다. 일 실시 예에 따라 모델링된 촉매층(100)에서, 제2 연통부(113)의 직경은 20 nm로 하였다.
촉매지지체(110)는 길이 방향에 수직한 방향으로 설정 거리 이격되어 복수 제공된다. 일 실시 예에 따라 모델링된 촉매층(100)에서, 촉매지지체(110)는 길이 방향 중심축을 기준으로 80 nm 간격을 갖도록 배열하였다. 이에 따라, 촉매지지체(110)의 부피 분률은 0.165이다.
도 3을 참조하면, 촉매지지체(110)의 내측에 형성된 연통부(111)에 이온 전도성 물질을 채워 넣어, 이온 전도 채널(120)이 형성된다.
도 2에서 상술한 촉매지지체(110)의 연통부(111)에 빈 공간 없이 이온 전도성 물질이 채워지면, 이온 전도성 물질의 부피 분률은 0.128이고, 이온 전도 채널(120)이 형성된 상태의 촉매지지체(110)의 부피 분률은 0.293이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 촉매(130)는 증착 등의 형태로, 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에 부착될 수 있다. 촉매(130)가 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에 무작위적으로 부착되면, 촉매(130)는 이온 전도 채널(120)이 외측면으로 노출된 영역 및 이온 전도 채널(120)이 없는 영역에 부착될 수 있다.
일 실시 예에 따라 모델링된 촉매층(100)에서, 촉매(130)의 지름은 4 nm, 촉매(130)의 함량은 0.175 mg/cm2으로 하고, 이에 따라 촉매(130)의 부피 분률은 0.01이다.
도 5를 참조하면, 촉매(130)가 부착된 후, 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에는 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 부착된다. 이오노머(140a, 140b)는 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에 무작위적으로 부착됨에 따라, 촉매(130)가 부착된 위치 또는 촉매(130)가 부착되지 않은 위치에 부착될 수 있다. 또한, 촉매지지체(110)의 외측면에 부착되는 이오노머(140a, 140b)의 양이 증가됨에 따라, 촉매(130)가 부착된 위치에 부착되는(즉, 촉매(130)를 덮는) 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 증가된다.
도 5는 촉매지지체(110), 촉매(130), 이오노머(140a, 140b) 및 기공이 각각 0.293, 0.01, 0.125 및 0.572일 때의 촉매층(100)의 구조를 나타낸다.
도 5에는 촉매층(100)의 상단에 고분자 전해질막(11)이 위치되었을 때를 기준으로, 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 고분자 전해질막(11)과 유효하게 연결되어 양이온을 전달할 수 있는 영역을 빨간색(140a)으로 표시하고, 고분자 전해질막(11)과 유효하게 연결되지 않은 영역은 파란색(140b)으로 표시하였다. 또한, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용될 수 있는 촉매(130a)는 노락색으로 표시하고, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용되지 않는 촉매(130b)는 검은색으로 표시하였다.
도 6은 비교예 1에 따른 촉매층을 나타내는 도면이다.
도 6을 참조하면, 비교예 1에 따른 촉매층은 이온 전도 채널이 생략되었다.
비교예 1에 따른 촉매층은 이온 전도 채널이 생략된 점 외에는 본 발명이 일 실시예에 따른 도 5의 촉매층(100)과 동일한 구조를 갖도록 하였다. 이에 따라, 촉매지지체의 부피 분률은 이온 전도 채널(120)이 형성된 상태의 촉매지지체(110)의 부피 분률과 동일하게 0.293으로 하였다.
도 6은 촉매지지체, 촉매, 이오노머 및 기공의 부피분률이 각각 0.293, 0.01, 0.125 및 0.572일 때의 촉매층의 구조를 나타낸다.
도 6에는 촉매층의 상단에 고분자 전해질막이 위치되었을 때를 기준으로, 이오노머가 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결되어 양이온을 전달할 수 있는 영역을 빨간색으로 표시하고, 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결되지 않은 영역은 파란색으로 표시하였다. 또한, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용될 수 있는 촉매는 노락색으로 표시하고, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용되지 않는 촉매는 검은색으로 표시하였다.
도 7은 비교예 2에 따른 촉매층을 나타내는 도면이다.
도 7을 참조하면, 비교예 2에 따른 촉매층은 이온 전도 채널이 생략되었다. 또한, 비교예 2에 따른 촉매층은 복수의 촉매지지체들이 번들 형태 배열되었다.
이 때, 번들에 포함된 촉매지지체의 직경은 20 nm으로 하였으며, 촉매지지체의 부피 분률은 도 5에 따른 촉매층(100) 및 비교예 1의 촉매층과 동일하게 0.293으로 하였다.
도 7은 촉매지지체, 촉매, 이오노머 및 기공의 부피분률이 각각 0.293, 0.01, 0.175 및 0.522일 때의 촉매층의 구조를 나타낸다.
도 7에는 촉매층의 상단에 고분자 전해질막이 위치되었을 때를 기준으로, 이오노머가 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결되어 양이온을 전달할 수 있는 영역을 빨간색으로 표시하고, 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결되지 않은 영역은 파란색으로 표시하였다. 또한, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용될 수 있는 촉매는 노락색으로 표시하고, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용되지 않는 촉매는 검은색으로 표시하였다.
도 8은 비교예 3에 따른 촉매층을 나타내는 도면이다.
도 8을 참조하면, 비교예 3에 따른 촉매층은 촉매지지체가 카본블랙을 이용하여, 무정형으로 형성되었다. 카본블랙은 Vulcan XC 72R을 가정하였으며, 직경 20 nm의 카본블랙으로 구성된 직경 100 nm의 탄소 응집체가 무정형의 촉매지지체를 형성하도록 하였다. 이때 촉매지지체의 부피 분률은 도 5에 따른 촉매층(100), 비교예 1 및 비교예 2의 촉매층과 동일하게 0.293으로 하였다. 그리고, 촉매지지체의 구조 외에는 도 5에 따른 본 발명의 실시예와 동일한 조건으로 촉매지지체의 외면에 촉매 및 이오노머를 부착하였다.
도 8은 촉매지지체, 촉매, 이오노머 및 기공의 부피 분률이 각각 0.293, 0.01, 0.125 및 0.572일 때의 촉매층의 구조를 나타낸다.
도 8에는 촉매층의 상단에 고분자 전해질막이 위치되었을 때를 기준으로, 이오노머가 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결되어 양이온을 전달할 수 있는 영역을 빨간색으로 표시하고, 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결되지 않은 영역은 파란색으로 표시하였다. 또한, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용될 수 있는 촉매는 노락색으로 표시하고, 전기화학적반응에 유효하게 활용되지 않는 촉매는 검은색으로 표시하였다.
도 9는 이오노머의 부피 분률에 따라 고분자 전해질막과 유효하게 연결된 이오노머의 비율을 나타내는 그래프이고, 도 10은 이오노머의 부피 분률에 따라 전기화학반응에 유효하게 기여하는 촉매의 비율을 나타내는 그래프이다.
도 9 및 도 10을 참조하여, 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 촉매층(100)과 비교예들의 촉매층을 비교한다.
촉매지지체는 하단에 위치된 가스확산층에 연결된 경우 전자전도에 유효하게 활용될 수 있다. 기공은 하단에 위치된 가스확산층에 연결된 경우 반응가스의 수송에 유효하게 활용될 수 있다. 이오노머는 상단에 위치된 고분자 전해질막에 연결된 경우 이온전도에 유효하게 활용될 수 있다. 촉매는 촉매지지체, 이오노머, 기공에 연결되어 이들로부터 전자, 이온 및 반응가스를 전달받을 수 있어야 전기화학반응에 유효하게 활용될 수 있다.
촉매지지체, 이오노머, 기공의 연결성 분석을 통해 촉매지지체를 통한 전자 수송 가능 경로, 이오노머를 통한 이온 수송 가능 경로, 기공을 통한 반응가스의 수송가능 경로를 도출하였다.
본 발명의 일 실시예의 촉매층(100), 비교예 1 내지 3의 촉매층 각각에 대해 이오노머의 부피 분률의 변화에 따라, 전체 이오노머 중 이온전도에 효과적으로 활용될 수 있는 이오노머 비율의 변화 조사하였다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시예의 촉매층(100), 비교예 1 내지 3의 촉매층 각각에 대해, 이오노머의 부피 분률의 변화에 따라 촉매지지체, 이오노머 및 기공에 연결되어, 이들 각각으로부터 전자, 이온 및 반응가스가 효과적으로 수송되어 표면에서 전기화학반응 반응을 일으킬 수 있는 촉매의 비율을 도출하였다.
비교예 1 내지 3의 촉매층에 포함된 이오노머의 경우, 직접적으로 또는 인접한 이오노머에 의해 상단에 위치된 고분자 전해질막에 연결되어야 유효한 이온 전달 경로가 될 수 있다. 이에 반에 본 발명의 실시 예에 따른 촉매층(100)은, 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 촉매지지체(110)의 내측에 형성된 이온 전도 채널(120)을 통해 고분자 전해질막(11)에 연결될 수 있어, 인접한 이오노머(140a, 140b)와 연결되지 않은 이오노머(140a, 140b)도 유효한 이온 전달 경로를 형성할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 촉매층(100)은 고분자 전해질막(11)의 반대쪽에 위치된 영역에도 이온전도에 유효한 이오노머(140a)가 고르게 분포되어 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
반면 도 6에 도시된 비교예 1의 촉매층의 경우 이오노머가 도 5와 동일한 부피 분률을 가짐에도 불구하고, 촉매층 하부에 이온전도에 유효한 이오노머가 효과적으로 생성되지 않음을 확인할 수 있다.
도 9를 살펴보면, 본 발명의 실시예에 의해 모델링 된 촉매층(100)은 비교예 1, 2 및 3과 비교할 때 이온전도에 기여하는 이오노머(140a)의 비율이 크게 개선되었음을 관찰할 수 있다. 특히, 본 발명의 실시예의 촉매층(100)은 이온 전도 채널(120)이 생략된 점 외에 유사 구조를 갖는 비교예 1보다 이온전도에 기여하는 이오노머(140a)의 비율이 현저하게 높음을 확인할 수 있다. 이는, 낮은 이오노머(140a, 140b)의 부피 분률로 인해 인접한 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 서로 연결되지 않는 조건에서도 촉매지지체(110) 내부의 이온 전도 채널(120)을 통한 이온 전도경로가 생성되는 것에 의한 것이다. 구체적으로, 비교예 1 및 3의 경우 이오노머의 부피 분률이 0.17이하가 되면 이온전도에 기여하는 이오노머의 비율이 급격히 낮아져, 이오노머의 부피 분률이 0.1에 이르면 이온전도에 기여하는 이오노머가 거의 존재하지 않는다. 반면 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 촉매층(100)의 경우, 이오노머(140a, 140b)의 부피 분률이 0.15 내지 0.13이되면 이온전도에 기여하는 이오노머(140a)의 비율이 낮아지기 시작한다. 또한, 이온전도에 기여하는 이오노머(140a)의 비율이 낮아지는 속도가 완만하며, 이오노머(140a, 140b)의 부피 분률이 0.1일 때에도 70%정도의 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 이온전도에 기여하며, 이오노머(140a, 140b)의 부피 분률이 0.07일 때에도 50%정도의 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 이온전도에 기여한다.
도 10을 살펴보면, 본 발명의 실시예에 의해 모델링 된 촉매층(100)은 비교예 1, 2및 3과 비교할 때 전기화학적 반응에 기여하는 유효 촉매의 비율이 크게 개선되었음을 확인할 수 있다.
먼저, 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 촉매층(100)은 유효 촉매(130a)의 비율의 최대값이 비교예 1, 2및 3보다 증가되었다. 또한 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 촉매층(100)은 비교예 1 내지 3의 촉매층과 비교할 때, 상대적으로 낮은 이오노머의 부피 분률에서도 높은 유효 촉매 비율을 나타내었다. 즉, 비교예 1 내지 3의 촉매층의 경우, 이오노머의 부피 분률이 증가하면, 이오노머에 의한 이온 전도 성능은 향상되나, 이오노머가 촉매를 덮어 촉매에 반응가스가 유효하게 전달되는 것을 차단하여, 유효 촉매의 비율이 떨어지게 된다. 반면, 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 촉매층(100)은 낮은 이오노머(140a, 140b) 부피 분률에서도 높은 비율의 이오노머(140a)가 이온전도에 기여한다. 그리고, 이오노머(140a, 140b)의 부피 분률이 낮아짐에 따라 이오노머(140a, 140b)가 공극에서 촉매(130)로 반응가스가 전달되는 것을 차단하는 정도가 감소한다. 이에 따라, 본 발명의 실시 예에 따른 촉매층(100)은 유효 이오노머의 비율이 설정 값 이상인 이오노머의 부피 분률 범위와 유효 촉매의 비율이 설정 값 이상인 이오노머의 부피 분률 범위가 상대적으로 넓은 영역에서 중첩된다. 이에 따라, 촉매층(100)은 이오노머의 부피 분률이 0.07이상 0.25이하인 범위에서 사용될 수 있다. 이때, 이오노머의 부피 분률 0.07은 유효 이오노머의 비율이 대략 50%정도에 해당되는 값이고, 이오노머의 부피 분률 0.25는 유효 촉매의 비율이 대략 50%정도에 해당되는 값이다. 특히, 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 촉매층(100)은 유효 이오노머의 비율이 낮아 종래 촉매층은 사용되기 힘든 이오노머의 부피 분률 0.07 이상 0.12 이하의 범위에서도 사용될 수 있다. 또한, 이온 전도성 물질의 부피 분률을 상대적으로 낮게 함에 따라 촉매층(100) 내 기공의 부피 분률을 증가시킬 수 있고, 이에 따라 반응가스의 전달경로를 개선 및 전기화학 반응의 효율성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 또한, 이오노머의 부피 분률이 0.12 이상 0.17이하인 영역에서는 종래 촉매층보다 유효 촉매(130a) 및 유효 이오노머(140a)의 비율이 모두 현저히 높아, 촉매층(100)의 반응성이 높게 나타난다.
이상의 상세한 설명은 본 발명을 예시하는 것이다. 또한 전술한 내용은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시 형태를 나타내어 설명하는 것이며, 본 발명은 다양한 다른 조합, 변경 및 환경에서 사용할 수 있다. 즉 본 명세서에 개시된 발명의 개념의 범위, 저술한 개시 내용과 균등한 범위 및/또는 당업계의 기술 또는 지식의 범위내에서 변경 또는 수정이 가능하다. 저술한 실시예는 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 구현하기 위한 최선의 상태를 설명하는 것이며, 본 발명의 구체적인 적용 분야 및 용도에서 요구되는 다양한 변경도 가능하다. 따라서 이상의 발명의 상세한 설명은 개시된 실시 상태로 본 발명을 제한하려는 의도가 아니다. 또한 첨부된 청구범위는 다른 실시 상태도 포함하는 것으로 해석되어야 한다.
본 발명은 연료 전지에 사용될 수 있는 촉매층을 제공하며, 전기화학적 반응의 반응성이 향상될 수 있다.

Claims (11)

  1. 전기 전도성 소재로, 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공되고, 설정 간격 이격되어 배열되는 복수의 촉매지지체;
    이온 전도성 물질로, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에 위치되는 이온 전도 채널;
    설정 크기의 입자 형태로 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 촉매; 및
    상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 이오노머를 포함하는 촉매층.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 촉매지지체의 내측에는,
    상기 촉매지지체의 길이 방향을 따라 형성되고 일단이 외부와 연결되게 형성되는 제1 연통부; 및
    상기 제1 연통부와 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면을 연결하도록 형성되는 제2 연통부가 형성되고,
    상기 이온 전도 채널은 상기 제1 연통부 및 상기 제2 연통부에 상기 이온 전도성 물질이 채워져 형성되는 촉매층.
  3. 제2항에 있어서,
    상기 제2 연통부는 상기 촉매지지체의 둘레 방향을 따라 복수 형성되는 촉매층.
  4. 제2항에 있어서,
    상기 제2 연통부는 상기 촉매지지체의 길이 방향을 따라 복수 형성되는 촉매층.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 촉매지지체는 전기전도성 고내식성 산화물, 전기전도성 고분자 또는 전기전도성의 탄소 동소체인 촉매층.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 이온 전도 물질은 퍼플루오로술폰산 계열 화합물 또는 이온전도성 고분자 물질인 촉매층.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 이오노머의 부피 분률은 0.07 이상 0.25이하인 촉매층.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 이오노머의 부피 분률은 0.07 이상 0.12이하인 촉매층.
  9. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 이오노머의 부피 분률은 0.12 이상 0.17 이하인 촉매층.
  10. 연료극 촉매층;
    공기극 촉매층; 및
    상기 연료극 촉매층 및 상기 공기극 촉매층 사이에 위치되어, 양이온을 상기 연료극 촉매층에서 상기 공기극 촉매층으로 전달하는 고분자 전해질막을 포함하되,
    상기 연료극 촉매층 또는 상기 공기극 촉매층은,
    전기 전도성 소재로, 설정 길이를 갖는 기둥 형상으로 제공되고, 설정 간격 이격되어 배열되는 복수의 촉매지지체;
    이온 전도성 물질로, 상기 촉매지지체의 내측에 위치되는 이온 전도 채널;
    설정 크기의 입자 형태로 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 촉매; 및
    상기 촉매지지체의 외측면에 위치되는 이오노머를 포함하는 연료 전지.
  11. 제10항에 있어서,
    상기 촉매지지체의 내측에는,
    상기 촉매지지체의 길이 방향을 따라 형성되고 일단이 외부와 연결되게 형성되는 제1 연통부; 및
    상기 제1 연통부와 상기 촉매지지체의 외측면을 연결하도록 형성되는 제2 연통부가 형성되고,
    상기 이온 전도 채널은 상기 제1 연통부 및 상기 제2 연통부에 상기 이온 전도성 물질이 채워져 형성되는 연료 전지.
