Definitions
- This Utility Model patent application refers to an unprecedented three-piece intraocular lens being one optical part and two modified elongated haptics, of different lengths, initially of "C" shapes that derive to a section. needles without lumen that facilitates the handling and externalization of said haptics.
- the human eye has a system of two natural lenses.
- the first of these lenses is the cornea and the second is the lens.
- these two lenses should deflect the rays of light entering the eye (refraction) to focus on the retina, which is the sensorine layer located at the back of the eye, which is responsible for transmitting the captured images to the brain.
- surgery is performed to remove this opacified natural lens from the eye, leaving only a thin layer of the lens called a capsule, which will support the proper placement of an artificial intraocular lens.
- the absence of lens is called aphakia and causes large refractive errors.
- Aphakia is treated by placing artificial intraocular lenses inside the eye.
- the lens is contained within a structure called the capsular sac, which is in turn attached to the inner part of the eye by a fiber network called the zonula.
- the capsular sac which is in turn attached to the inner part of the eye by a fiber network called the zonula.
- the zonula a fiber network
- the artificial intraocular lens can also be attached to the sclera (white, opaque, dense part that gives resistance to the outside of the eye and is covering the posterior 5/6 of the eyeball) by suturing with threads in the sclera or by inserting the haptic itself into the sclera.
- the sclera white, opaque, dense part that gives resistance to the outside of the eye and is covering the posterior 5/6 of the eyeball
- Known lenses are made up of two parts.
- a transparent optical part with the function of deflecting light rays through refraction and focusing them on the retina and the haptic with the function of fixing and stabilizing the lens within the eye.
- the Japanese document lens applied in suture-free techniques for attaching the haptic itself to the sclera, uses three-piece lenses, one piece being the optical part and the other two pieces being the haptics, which are attached to the sclera, whose highlight is to present a locking means that avoids its return during the procedure and promotes fixation on the sclera.
- Microforceps are used to pin the haptics toward the insulin needles.
- the Intraocular Lens Arrangement with Long and Needle Haptics consists of a three-piece intraocular lens with an optical part from which two modified haptics are derived, ie of longer lengths than conventional intraocular lenses. They need to have their ends needled in order to facilitate the capture of the haptic in the anterior chamber of the eye during surgery, as well as its externalization with greater technical ease and minimal need for intraocular manipulation. This avoids the reflux of the haptics and achieves a safer procedure with fewer intra and postoperative complications.
- the haptics may have a locking means.

- the Intraocular Lens Arrangement with Long and Needle Haptics is an intraocular lens (1) consisting of three parts and an optical part (2) from which two haptics (3 and 4) of longer lengths are derived, which take a needled constructive arrangement (5 and 6) at their ends, with the aim of facilitating the capture and externalization of the sclera avoiding its reflux into the eye (O).
- the innovative intraocular lens (1) is comprised of three pieces being an optical part (2) of foldable or rigid material having a preferred diameter of 6mm but which may range from 4.5mm to 7.5mm , from which two C-shaped curvilinear conformal haptics (3 and 4) are derived to the locking means (7), represented by a thickening of the haptics, which prevents reflux into the eye (O) of the already exterior of the haptic (3 or 4) extending beyond the locking means.
- the shorter length of the needled end (6) of the second haptic (4) is warranted to facilitate insertion through a small corneal incision when the optic part (2) is already positioned within the eye (O).
- the thicknesses of the haptics (3 and 4) are about 0.15mm and the locking medium about 0.33mm, however such measurements may vary more or less.
- the thickness of the optical part (2) will depend on the diopter of the lens and the constant / refractive index of the material used for its manufacture, such as hydrophilic or hydrophobic acrylic, silicone, among others.
- the intraocular lens (1A) is made up of three parts, one optical part (2A) being two haptics (3A and 4A) of curvilinear “C” shape, at the end of which it has rectilinear conformation (3A 'and 4A') for a preferred length of 3mm, but which may vary from 1mm to 10mm from where it extends into a rectilinear needle construction (5A and 6A) at its ends in the same dimensions as above.
- two lumen insulin needles are needed, which transfix the sclera at antipodal points about 1.5mm from the corneal limb, serving as a tunnel for the capture and externalization of the needles (5 and 6) without lumen of the innovated intraocular lens (1).
- the needle ends (5 and 6) are inserted into the eye (O) through a corneal incision and are placed within the lumens of the respective insulin needles which transfix the sclera so that the haptic / needle end assembly can be externalized.
