Description

液晶表示素子
 本発明は、液晶表示素子に関する。
 一般に、液晶パネルや液晶ディスプレイなどの液晶表示素子は、液晶分子の配列の状態を電場等の外部刺激によって変化させて、これに伴う光学特性の変化を表示に利用している。このような液晶表示素子は、二枚の透明基板の間隙に液晶分子を充填された状態の構成をしており、当該液晶分子と当接する基板の表面には液晶分子を予め特定の方向に配列させるための配向膜を形成しているのが一般的である。
 しかし、液晶表示素子の製造工程において配向膜表面に生じた傷やほこりが原因で配向欠陥が発生する問題や基板のサイズの大型化に伴い、基板全面に亘って、かつ長期間均一な配向を得るための配向膜の設計および管理が困難になるという問題がある。
 そこで、近年、液晶分子の配向を制御する自発配向材を含む液晶組成物を液晶層に用いることで、配向膜を必要としない液晶表示素子の開発が求められている。
 例えば、特許文献1では、液晶分子との相互作用が比較的弱いラウリルアクリレートの代わりに、オクチル基を備えた高い直線性を示す単官能のビフェニルモノマーと、ステアリル基を備えた低い直線を示す二官能のビフェニルモノマーとを含む液晶組成物により、電圧保持率の低下を抑制する自発配向材を含む液晶組成物が記載されている。また、特許文献2では、配向膜の代わりに液晶分子の配向を制御する重合性自己配向添加剤を含む液晶組成物について種々開示されており、ネマチックLC媒体と、重合性自己配向添加剤と、必要により重合性化合物とを含む液晶組成物を配向層なしの試験セル中に充填すると、基板表面に関して自発的なホメオトロピック(垂直)配向を有することおよびこの垂直配向は、透明点までずっと安定であり、形成したVAセルを、電圧印加により可逆的に切り換えることができると記載している。

 しかしながら、上記の特許文献1で示すようなアルキル鎖が長くビフェニル骨格を備えた疎水性のモノマーを2種含む組成物は、一対の基板間に充填された液晶層の液晶分子との相互作用はラウリルアクリレートより強くなると考えられるが、基板に対する吸着力が低いことことに起因して、重合性自己配向添加剤自体が基板に固定化されていないため液晶分子の配向方向を規制できないという問題が生じる。
 また、特許文献2では、水酸基などの吸着基を備えた重合性自己配向添加剤を使用しているため、基板に対する吸着力は上記特許文献1のモノマーより高いと考えられる。しかし、重合性自己配向添加剤の基板に対する吸着力が高すぎると、重合性自己配向添加剤が基板上に均一に展開しないため配向ムラが生じるという問題が生じる。
 また、特許文献1および2では、基板に対して直接相互作用する重合性自己配向添加剤が記載されているが、基板表面の凹凸や基板表面のオーバーコート層との相互作用を考慮していないためオーバーコート層上で配向ムラが生じるという問題が生じる。
 そこで本発明が解決しようとする課題は、絶縁層、特に有機絶縁層に対する垂直配向性に優れた液晶表示素子を提供することにある。
 本発明者らが鋭意検討した結果、第1の基板および前記第1の基板と対向して設けられた第2の基板と、前記第1の基板上に設けられた第1の絶縁層および第1の電極層と、前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に設けられ、かつ前記第1の絶縁層と相互作用を奏する吸着部位を2つ以上備えた化合物を含む液晶層と、を備えた液晶表示素子により、上記課題を解決できることを見出し、本願発明を完成するに至った。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子は、高い相溶性と液晶分子に対する優れた垂直配向性とを示す。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子は、基板に対して優れた展開性(濡れ広がり)を示す。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子は、配向ムラが無いまたは配向ムラを低減することができる。

 本発明の第1は、第1の基板および前記第1の基板と対向して設けられた第2の基板と、前記第1の基板上に設けられた第1の絶縁層および第1の電極層と、前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に設けられ、液晶分子に配向を付与する配向付与成分を含有する液晶層とを有し、前記液晶層は、前記第1の絶縁層と相互作用を奏する吸着部位を2つ以上備える配向付与化合物を含有する液晶組成物から形成されることを特徴とする液晶表示素子である。
 液晶層中に含まれる配向付与成分は、液晶層を構成する液晶分子の配向を制御することができるため、従来、液晶分子を一定方向に配列させるために使用されていた配向膜(ラビング配向膜、光配向膜)などの代わりや配向膜と併用して使用することで、電圧無印加の状態における液晶分子の配向方向を一定方向に規制する効果を向上することができる。また、上記配向付与成分を含有する液晶層は、例えばSiNxやオーバーコート層などの絶縁層と相互作用を奏する吸着部位を2つ以上備え、かつ液晶分子を一定方向に配列させる配向付与化合物を含む液晶組成物から形成されているため、当該配向付与成分が絶縁層に対して多点で相互作用をすることに起因して、基板に対する固定力が向上するため液晶分子に対する配向規制力がより大きくなる。
 以下、図面に基づいて本発明に係る液晶表示素子の全体像を説明した後、各構成要素について詳説する。図1~6は本発明に係る液晶表示素子の好ましい一例として、垂直電界型液晶表示素子について説明するがこれに限定されることはない。
 図1は、垂直電界型の液晶表示素子の構成を模式的に示す図である。また、図1では、説明のために便宜上各構成要素を離間して記載している。図2および図3は、当該図1における基板上に形成された薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3(または薄膜トランジスタ層3とも称する。)のII線で囲まれた領域を拡大した平面図である。図3は、図2の薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3の変形例である。図4は、図2におけるIII-III線方向に図1に示す液晶表示素子を切断した断面図である。図5は、図4のIVの領域である薄膜トランジスタの一態様を示す図である。図6は、図4に記載の液晶表示素子の断面図の変形例を示す図であり、いわゆるカラーフィルタオンアレイの構造を示す図である。
 以下、図1~6を参照して、本発明に係る垂直電界型の液晶表示素子を説明する。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子10の構成は、一方の面上に第1の偏光層1を備え、他方の面上に画素電極および各画素に具備した前記画素電極を制御する薄膜トランジスタを形成した電極層3を含む第1の基板2と、一方の面上に第2の偏光層8を備え、他方の面上に(透明)電極層3’(または共通電極層3’とも称する。)およびカラーフィルタ6を備えた第2の基板7と、前記第1の基板2と第2の基板7との間に挟持された液晶層5(液晶分子に配向を付与する配向付与化合物を含有する液晶組成物から形成される)を有する。また、図1に記載の液晶表示素子は、液晶層5中の液晶分子が電圧無印加時の液晶分子の長軸方向が前記基板2,7に対して略垂直に配向し、かつ電圧印加時の液晶分子の長軸方向が前記基板2,7に対して略平行に配向する形態であり、電圧に応答して液晶分子の長軸方向を可逆的に制御する液晶表示素子である。また、本発明に係る配向付与化合物及び前記配向付与成分は、前記第1の基板2及び/又は前記第2の基板7に対して、略垂直方向の配向を前記液晶層中の液晶分子に付与する役割を有する。即ち、液晶層中の配向付与化合物又は前記配向付与成分は、吸着部位を備えているため液晶層の界面近傍に安定して存在でき、また、電圧無印加時では配向付与化合物又は前記配向付与成分により液晶分子を第1の基板2及び/又は前記第2の基板7に対して、略垂直方向に配向させる。その結果、配向層が不要な液晶表示素子を提供することができる。
 なお、本発明に係る液晶層5と隣接し、かつ当該液晶層5を構成する液晶組成物と直接接するよう配向層(図示せず)を電極(層)3または共通電極層3’の表面の少なくとも一方に必要により形成してもよい。すなわち、前記配向層4は、液晶層5と電極層3’との間または前記配向層4は、液晶層5と電極層3との間の一方に設けてもよい。
 配向膜と本発明の配向付与成分を併用することで、電圧無印加の状態における液晶分子の配向方向を一定方向に規制する効果を向上することができる。
 したがって、本発明に係る液晶表示素子10の好ましい形態の一つは、第1の偏光層1、第1の基板2、薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3、配向付与成分を含む液晶層5、透明電極(層)3’、カラーフィルタ6、第2の基板7および第2の偏光層8が順次積層されている。
 また、後述の図6に示すように、カラーフィルタ6は、第1の基板上の薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3に設けてもよい。
 また、図1における矢印は液晶表示素子に取り付けられるバックライトからの光の方向を示す。矢印の先がいわゆる視覚側に相当する。
 図2は、電極層3の一画素の電極、いわゆる画素電極21の形状の一例として“」”型(逆L字型)を示した図であり、図1における基板2上に形成された電極層3のII線で囲まれた領域を拡大した平面図である。
 図2において、画素電極21は表示画素毎に配置され、スリット状の開口部が形成されている。共通電極と画素電極とは、例えばITO(Indium Tin Oxide)によって形成された透明電極であり、電極層3は、液晶表示素子の表示部において、複数の表示画素が配列する行に沿って延びるゲートバスライン26(GBL1、GBL2・・・GBLm)と、複数の表示画素が配列する列に沿って延びるソースバスライン25(SBL1、SBL2・・・SBLm)と、ゲートバスライン26とソースバスライン25とが交差する位置近傍に画素スイッチとして薄膜トランジスタ(図4のIVの領域)を備えている。また、当該薄膜トランジスタのゲート電極28は対応するゲートバスライン26と電気的に接続されており、当該薄膜トランジスタのソース電極27は対応するソースバスライン25と電気的に接続されている。さらに、薄膜トランジスタのドレイン電極24は、対応する画素電極と電気的に接続されている。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子の薄膜トランジスタを含む電極構造の好適な一態様は、図2に示すように、第1の基板2の表面に形成されている薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3において、走査信号を供給するためのゲートバスライン26と表示信号を供給するためのソースバスライン25とが互いに交差しており、かつ前記複数のゲートバスライン26と複数のソースバスライン25とに囲まれた領域には、画素電極21がマトリックス状に形成されている。画素電極21に表示信号を供給するスイッチ素子として、前記ゲートバスライン26と前記ソースバスライン25とが互いに交差している交差部近傍において、ソース電極27、ドレイン電極24およびゲート電極28を含む薄膜トランジスタが、前記画素電極21と隣接して設けられている。さらに、前記複数のゲートバスラインと複数のソースバスラインとに囲まれた領域には各画素毎に書き込まれた電位を保存するストレイジキャパシタが設けられていてもよい。
 また図2に示すように、ドレイン電極24が接続されている薄膜トランジスタ部分(図4のIVの領域)や画素電極21(電極層3)を被覆されていない画素の縁領域は絶縁層30が露出されている。特に、液晶層5と当接する配向膜を使用しない形態、いわゆる自発性配向剤といった配向膜の代わりに液晶分子を一定方向に配列させるための化合物(配向付与化合物)を液晶層に添加する形態では、絶縁層30や凹凸のある薄膜トランジスタが直接液晶層5と接する。しかしながら、ITO電極と、絶縁層30の材質が異なるため、絶縁層30と液晶層5とが接する領域や凹凸のある薄膜トランジスタの領域では、著しく自発性配向剤との密着力が低下するため、自発性配向剤自体が基板に対して固定化されず、結果として当該領域では液晶分子を一定方向(例えば、基板に対して垂直方向)に配列できないことに起因する配向ムラが生じる。一方、本発明では、一分子中に絶縁層30と多点で固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物を用い、かつ絶縁層30と多点で固定化した状態で配向付与成分を形成しているため、後述の図4に示すように、配向付与成分4が凹凸のある薄膜トランジスタや絶縁層30などを一様に被覆できていると考えられ、実施例で示す通り、絶縁層30と液晶層5とが接する領域や凹凸のある薄膜トランジスタの領域での配向ムラが抑制できていると考えられる。また、多点で固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物又は前記配向付与成分は、前記第1の基板2又は前記第2の基板7に対して略垂直方向の配向を液晶分子に付与することが好ましい。
 電極層3は、複数の表示画素を駆動する駆動手段として、ゲートドライバとソースドライバとを備えており、前記ゲートドライバおよび前記ソースドライバは、液晶表示部の周囲に配置されている。また、複数のゲートバスラインはゲートドライバの出力端子と電気的に接続され、複数のソースバスラインはソースドライバの出力端子と電気的に接続されている。
 ゲートドライバは複数のゲートバスラインにオン電圧を順次印加して、選択されたゲートバスラインに電気的に接続された薄膜トランジスタのゲート電極にオン電圧を供給する。ゲート電極にオン電圧が供給された薄膜トランジスタのソース-ドレイン電極間が導通する。ソースドライバは、複数のソースバスラインのそれぞれに対応する出力信号を供給する。ソースバスラインに供給された信号は、ソース-ドレイン電極間が導通した薄膜トランジスタを介して対応する画素電極に印加される。ゲートドライバおよびソースドライバは、液晶表示素子の外部に配置された表示処理部(制御回路とも称する)により動作を制御される。
 図2では、ゲートバスライン26とソースバスライン25とに囲まれた領域の略全面に“」”型に形成されているが、画素電極の形状はこれに限定されるものではなく、図3で示すフィッシュボーン構造の画素電極でもよい。
 図3は、電極層3の一画素の画素電極の形状の他の一例として“フィッシュボーン”型を示した図であり、図1における基板2上に形成された電極層3のII線で囲まれた領域を拡大した平面図である。
 ここで、前記した画素電極21として微細スリット電極を用いる場合、図3に示す様な所謂フィッシュボーン型電極であることが配向方位の安定性の点から好ましい。該フィッシュボーン型電極を図3に基づいて詳述すれば、該電極はITOなどの透明電極から構成され、その電極材料(ITO)の一部を抜いたスリット部512cが設けられている。より具体的には、長方形のセルの各対向辺の中点を結ぶ十字状の背骨となる画素幹部電極512aに対して、適切な間隔で画素枝部電極512bを配置することにより、画素枝部電極512b間に配向規制用構造物としてのスリット部512cが形成される。図3の態様では画素幹部電極512aから斜め45°方向に画素枝部電極512bが延びてスリット部512cが複数形成されており、これらが傾斜時の方位角方向の乱れを抑える補助的な配向制御因子として機能する。画素幹部電極512aの表示用画素電極の幅dは、例えば3~10μm、好ましくは5~9μm、さらに好ましくは7μm程度である。例えば、画素枝部電極512bの電極幅を5μmとし、この画素枝部電極512bを8μmピッチで配置することにより、スリット部512cの幅は3μmとなる。図3では、画素幹部電極512aと画素枝部電極512bは45度の角度を有しながら、画素中央を対称中心として90度ずつ異なる4方向に枝部電極が延在された構造を有している。また、図3では薄膜トランジスタ513を有している。
液晶分子は電圧印加により傾斜配向するが、傾斜配向の方位がこれらの4方向と一致しするように傾斜配向するので、4分割されたドメインを一つの画素内に形成させて表示の視野角を広くすることができる。
 図3で示すようなフィッシュボーン構造の画素電極の形態でも同様に、スリット部512cは絶縁層が露出されているため、図2で示す電極の構造と同様に、液晶層に当接させて液晶分子を一定方向に配列させる役割を備えた配向膜を使用しない形態、いわゆる自発性配向剤といった配向膜の代わりに液晶分子を一定方向に配列させるための化合物(配向付与化合物)を液晶層に添加する形態では、薄膜トランジスタ513の凹凸やITO電極と絶縁層30との材質の違いにより、基板に対する自発性配向剤の密着力が低下するため、当該領域では液晶分子を一定方向に配列できないことに起因する配向ムラが生じる。しかしながら、本発明では、一分子中に絶縁層30と多点で固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物を用い、かつ絶縁層30と多点で固定化した状態で配向付与成分を形成しているため、絶縁層と液晶層とが接する領域や凹凸のある薄膜トランジスタ513の領域での配向ムラが抑制できていると考えられる。また、多点で絶縁層に対して固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物又は前記配向付与成分は、基板に対して略垂直方向の配向を液晶分子に付与することが好ましい。
 垂直配向型の液晶表示素子の液晶パネル部は、共通電極である電極3’(図示せず)が画素電極21と対向離間して、TFTと対向する基板上に形成されている。換言すると、画素電極21と、共通電極22とは別の基板上に形成されている。
 図4は、図2におけるIII-III線方向に図1に示す液晶表示素子を切断した断面図である。すなわち、本発明に係る液晶表示素子10は、第1の偏光層1と、第1の基板2と、薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3(又は薄膜トランジスタ層や画素電極とも称する)3と、液晶層5に含まれる配向付与成分4と、液晶組成物を含む液晶層5と、配向付与成分4と、(透明)電極3’(共通電極3)と、カラーフィルタ6と、第2の基板7と、第2の偏光層8と、が順次積層された構成である。
 配向付与成分4は、吸着部位を2以上有する配向付与化合物を含む液晶組成物から形成される。また、配向付与成分4は、液晶層5と、当該液晶層5と当接する基板表面の電極層3、3’や絶縁層(図示せず)との界面に存在すると考えられる。また、配向付与成分4は、第1の基板2および第2の基板7の最表面を被覆している。
 本発明においては、図4に記載するように薄膜トランジスタが逆スタガード型である液晶表示素子に好適に使用でき、ゲートバスラインやソースバスラインなどは金属膜であることが好ましく、アルミニウム配線を用いる場合が特に好ましい。さらに、ゲートバスラインおよびデータバスラインはゲート絶縁膜を介して重なっている。
 本発明においては、薄膜トランジスタが逆スタガード型である液晶表示素子に好適に使用できる。逆スタガード型の薄膜トランジスタの構造の好適な一態様は、例えば、図5で示すように、基板102上に形成されたゲート電極111と、当該ゲート電極111を覆い、且つ前記基板102の略全面を覆うように設けられたゲート絶縁層112と、前記ゲート電極111と対向するよう前記ゲート絶縁層12の表面に形成された半導体層113と、前記半導体層113の一方の側端部を覆い、かつ前記基板102上に形成された前記ゲート絶縁層112と接触するように設けられたドレイン電極116と、前記半導体層113の他方の側端部を覆い、かつ前記基板102表面に形成された前記ゲート絶縁層112と接触するように設けられたソース電極117と、前記ドレイン電極116および前記ソース電極117を覆うように設けられた絶縁保護層118と、を有している。ゲート電極111の表面にゲート電極との段差を無くす等の理由により陽極酸化被膜(図示せず)を形成してもよい。なお、本明細書における「基板上」とは、基板と直接当接するだけでなく間接的に当接する、いわゆる基板に支持されている状態も含む。
 前記半導体層113には、アモルファスシリコン、多結晶ポリシリコンなどを用いることができるが、ZnO、IGZO(In-Ga-Zn-O)、ITO等の透明半導体膜を用いると、光吸収に起因する光キャリアの弊害を抑制でき、素子の開口率を増大する観点からも好ましい。
 さらに、ショットキー障壁の幅や高さを低減する目的で半導体層113とドレイン電極116またはソース電極117との間にオーミック接触層を設けても良い。オーミック接触層には、n型アモルファスシリコンやn型多結晶ポリシリコン等のリン等の不純物を高濃度に添加した材料を用いることができる。
 ゲートバスライン26やソースバスライン25、共通ラインは金属膜であることが好ましく、Al、Cu、Au、Ag、Cr、Ta、Ti、Mo、W、Ni又はその合金がより好ましく、Al又はその合金の配線を用いる場合が特に好ましい。また、絶縁保護層118は、絶縁機能を有する層であり、窒化ケイ素、二酸化ケイ素、ケイ素酸窒化膜等で形成される。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子の好ましい態様の一例は、薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3が形成されている基板と同一の基板側にカラーフィルタ6が形成されていることが好ましい。当該形態は、一般的にカラーフィルタオンアレイ(COA)などと呼ばれている。具体的な構造について図6を用いて以下説明する。図6は、図2のIII-III線方向に液晶表示素子を切断した図4の断面図の変形例である。当該液晶表示素子の構成は、配向付与成分4、薄膜トランジスタ20(111,113,116,117)、カラーフィルタ6および画素電極21が表面に形成された第1の基板2と、配向付与成分4および共通電極22が表面に形成された第2の基板7とが前記配向層同士向かい合うよう離間しており、この空間に液晶組成物を含む液晶層5が充填されている。また、前記第1の基板2の表面の一部に薄膜トランジスタ20やゲート絶縁膜112が形成されており、さらに当該薄膜トランジスタ20を被覆するように平坦膜でもある絶縁層30が形成されており、当該絶縁層30上にカラーフィルタ6、画素電極21および配向付与成分4の順で積層されている。そのため、図5などとは異なり、第2の基板7上にはカラーフィルタ6が存在しない。
 また液晶表示素子は、中央部に位置した矩形状の表示領域R1と、表示領域周縁部に沿って位置した枠状の非表示領域R2とを有しており、表示領域R1において、赤色、緑色または青色のカラーフィルタを形成している。より詳細にはカラーフィルタの周縁部を信号線(データ配線やゲート配線等)に重ねて配設されている。
 カラーフィルタ6上には、ITO(インジウム・ティン・オキサイド)等の透明な導電膜により形成された複数の画素電極21が設けられている。各画素電極21は絶縁膜30および各カラーフィルタに形成されたスルーホール(図示せず)を介して対応する薄膜トランジスタに接続されている。より詳しくは、画素電極21は、上記したコンタクト電極を介して薄膜トランジスタに接続されている。画素電極21内若しくは画素電極21外には柱状スペーサー(図示せず)などが複数本配設されていてもよい。
 また、当該カラーフィルタ6は、光の漏れを防止する観点で、薄膜トランジスタおよびストレイジキャパシタに対応する部分にブラックマトリックス(図示せず)を形成することが好ましい。
 図6で示すようなCOA構造の形態でも同様に、使用する電極がフィッシュボーン電極の場合は、スリット部512cは絶縁層30やカラーフィルタ6が液晶層5と当接する領域であり、また図2で示す電極の構造の場合でも絶縁層30やカラーフィルタ6が液晶層5と当接する。そのため、液晶分子を一定方向に配列させる役割を備えた配向膜を使用しない形態、いわゆる自発性配向剤といった配向膜の代わりに液晶分子を一定方向に配列させるための化合物(配向付与化合物)を液晶層に添加する形態では、カラーフィルタ6又は絶縁層30と、ITO電極との材質の違いやカラーフィルタ間又は絶縁層30の凹凸により、基板に対する自発性配向剤の密着力が低下するため、当該領域では液晶分子を一定方向に配列できないことに起因する配向ムラが生じる。しかしながら、本発明では、一分子中に絶縁層30と多点で固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物を用い、かつ絶縁層30と多点で固定化した状態で配向付与成分を形成しているため、絶縁層と液晶層とが接する領域や凹凸のある薄膜トランジスタの領域での配向ムラが抑制できていると考えられる。
 本発明に係るCOA構造の別の実施形態を図7(a)~図7(d)に示す。これらの4つの実施形態は、特に色変換させるいわゆるカラーフィルタ76と薄膜トランジスタを含む層73とが同一基板上に形成されている形態を示す。図7(a)に示す形態は、ガラス基板71上に所定の薄膜トランジスタ配線74(ゲートバスラインやソースバスライン)を作製し、その後カラーフィルタ76を各画素に相当するように作製し、さらにその上に画素電極73としてのITO72を形成する。そのため、図7(a)に示す形態は、液晶層75とカラーフィルタ76とが直接当接する形態である。なお、当該画素電極73において、画素電極のITO72と薄膜トランジスタのドレイン電極との導通を取るためのコンタクトホールをも形成しているが、本図面では記載を省略している。さらに液晶層75の厚みを保持するフォトスペーサも画素間や薄膜トランジスタ上に配置するのが望ましいが、本図面では記載を省略している。なお、対向基板側には、画素間からの光り抜けを防止するためのブラックマトリックス(BM)層78を設けている。
 図7(b)に示す形態は、薄膜トランジスタ配線74上に形成されたカラーフィルタ76の表面に無機絶縁膜77であるSiNxを形成し、カラーフィルタ76から液晶層75への汚染を防止する形態を示している。他の点では図7(a)と同様である。
 図7(c)に示す形態は、カラーフィルタ76上に透明な有機絶縁膜77’を形成し、図7(b)と同様カラーフィルタ76から液晶層75への汚染を防止する効果がある。他の点では図7(a)と同様である。
 図7(d)に示す形態は、薄膜トランジスタ配線74上に形成されたカラーフィルタ76と共にBM層を形成した実施形態を示している。液晶層75とカラーフィルタ76とが直接当接する形態である。
 これら例や図3で示すとおり、画素電極間及びフィッシュボーン電極のスリット部はITOで覆われないため、下地の絶縁膜が最表面に現れ、注入した液晶はITO面と共に、これら絶縁膜とも直接接触する。そのため、本発明の配向付与化合物は、一分子中に絶縁層と多点で固定化しうる吸着部位を複数備えており、かつ吸着部位には重合性が含まれているため、配向付与化合物が絶縁層と多点で固定化した状態で層(又はドメイン)を形成することで、これら絶縁膜との吸着度合いが高まり、液晶の配向度合いを向上させる必要がある。この形態では、多点で絶縁層に対して固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物又は前記配向付与成分は、基板に対して略垂直方向の配向を液晶分子に付与することが好ましい。
 本発明に係る絶縁層は、第1の基板上に形成されており、必要により第2の基板上に第2の絶縁層を形成してもよい。第1の基板上に形成される絶縁層を第1の絶縁層、第2の基板上に形成される絶縁層を第2の絶縁層と称する。また、当該第1の絶縁層と第2の絶縁層とは同じであっても異なっていてもよい。
 本発明に係る第1の絶縁層としては、有機絶縁層または無機絶縁層が好ましい。また、本発明に係る第2の絶縁膜も同様である。なお、本明細書において絶縁層は、第1の絶縁層と第2の絶縁層との総称をいい、便宜上、第1の基板に形成されている絶縁層を第1の絶縁層、第2の基板上に形成されている絶縁層を第2の絶縁層と称している。
 上記有機絶縁層としては、オーバーコート層またはカラーフィルタ層が好ましい。本明細書におけるオーバーコート層は、絶縁機能の他に平坦化機能または下層の保護機能のいずれかを備えていることが好ましく、本明細書では有機材料の層をオーバーコート層と称する。上記オーバーコート層としては、光学異方性が小さく、所望の絶縁性と高い透明性を備えていればよく、一般的に液晶表示素子のカラーフィルタなどに使用されるオーバーコート層が挙げられる。当該オーバーコート層の材料は、光硬化性樹脂または熱硬化性樹脂が挙げられ、具体的には、アクリル系樹脂、フェノール系樹脂、エポキシ系樹脂、カルド系樹脂、ビニル系樹脂、イミド系樹脂、ノボラック系樹脂などの単一層またはこれら層の複数の組み合わせによる積層構造としてもよい。
 本発明に係るオーバーコート層の平均膜厚は、0.4μm~2.5μmの範囲内であることが好ましい。
 上記カラーフィルタ層は、赤色(R)、緑色(G)および青色(B)の光を透過させる3つのカラーパターンと、光漏れを防止し、かつ隣接するカラーパターン同士の混色を防ぐブラックマトリクスと、を含むことが好ましい。また、前記3色のカラーパターンは周期的に配列されており、カラー画像表示の単位である1画素は、複数の副画素(サブピクセル)から構成されている。好ましい1画素の形態は、赤色表示の副画素(R)と、青色表示の副画素(B)と、緑色表示の副画素(G)との3つの副画素を含む。
 上記カラーフィルタ層を構成する画素を形成するカラーフィルタは、少なくとも3原色の色彩を含む。すなわち、加色法によりカラー表示を行う場合は、赤(R)、緑(G)、青(B)の3原色が選ばれ、減色法によりカラー表示を行う場合は、シアン(C)、マゼンタ(M)、イエロー(Y)の3原色が選ばれる。一般には、これらの3原色を含んだ要素を1単位としてカラー表示の絵素とすることができる。カラーフィルタには、着色剤により着色された樹脂が用いられる。
 上記カラーフィルタ層に用いられる着色剤としては、有機顔料、無機顔料、染料などを好適に用いることができ、さらには、紫外線吸収剤、分散剤、レベリング剤などの
種々の添加剤を添加しても良い。有機顔料としては、フタロシアニン系、アジレーキ系、縮合アゾ系、キナクリドン系、アントラキノン系、ペリレン系、ペリノン系が好適に用いられる。
 上記カラーフィルタ層に用いられる樹脂としては、エポキシ系樹脂、アクリル系樹脂、ウレタン系樹脂、ポリエステル系樹脂、ポリイミド系樹脂、ポリオレフィン系樹脂、ゼラチンなどの感光性または非感光性の材料が好ましく用いられ、着色剤をこれらの樹脂中に分散あるいは溶解させて着色することが好ましい。感光性の樹脂としては、光分解型樹脂、光架橋型樹脂光重合型樹脂などのタイプがあり、特に、エチレン不飽和結合を有するモノマー、オリゴマまたはポリマと紫外線によりラジカルを発生する開始剤とを含む感光性組成物、感光性ポリアミック酸組成物などが好適に用いられる。非感光性の樹脂としては、上記の各種ポリマなどで現像処理が可能なものが好ましく用いられるが、透明導電膜の成膜工程や液晶表示装置の製造工程でかかる熱に耐えられるような耐熱性を有する樹脂が好ましく、また、液晶表示装置の製造工程で使用される有機溶剤への耐性を持つ樹脂が好ましいことから、ポリイミド系樹脂が特に好ましく用いられる。
 上記カラーフィルタ層を形成する方法としては、例えば、着色ペーストを基板上に塗布・乾燥した後に、パターニングを行う方法などがある。着色剤を分散または溶解させ着色ペーストを得る方法としては、溶媒中に樹脂と着色剤を混合させた後、三本ロール、サンドグラインダー、ボールミル等の分散機中で分散させる方法などがあるが、この方法に特に限定されない。
 上記着色ペーストを塗布する方法としては、黒色ペーストの場合と同様、ディップ法、ロールコータ法、スピナー法、ダイコーティング法、ワイヤーバーによる方法などが好適に用いられ、この後、オーブンやホットプレートを用いて加熱乾燥(セミキュア)を行う。セミキュア条件は、使用する樹脂、溶媒、ペースト塗布量により異なるが通常60~200℃で1~60分加熱することが好ましい。
 上記このようにして得られた着色ペースト被膜は、樹脂が非感光性の樹脂である場合は、その上にフォトレジストの被膜を形成した後に、また、樹脂が感光性の樹脂である場合は、そのままかあるいはポリビニルアルコールなどの酸素遮断膜を形成した後に、露光・現像を行う。必要に応じて、フォトレジストまたは酸素遮断膜を除去し、また、加熱乾燥(本キュア)する。本キュア条件は、樹脂により異なるが、前駆体からポリイミド系樹脂を得る場合には、通常200~300℃で1~60分加熱するのが一般的である。以上のプロセスにより、基板上にパターニングされたカラーフィルタが形成される。
 画面内や土台の上に形成される柱材料としては、エポキシ系樹脂、アクリル系樹脂、ウレタン系樹脂、ポリエステル系樹脂、ポリイミド系樹脂、ポリオレフィン系樹脂、ゼラチン、ノボラック樹脂とナフトキノンジアジスルホン酸エステルドとの混合物などの感光性または非感光性の樹脂材料が好ましく用いられる。これらの樹脂の中でも、積層のし易さからアクリル系樹脂やポリイミド系樹脂が特に好ましく用いられる。感光性の樹脂は、ネガ型とポジ型の2種類があるが、本発明においてはどちらでも構わない。ただし、柱の1個当たりのサイズが小さい場合(100μm以下)にはパターン形成の容易さから、ポジ型の方が好ましい。一方で柱形成の生産性の点からはネガ型の方が好ましい。ネガ型材料でスペーサーをフォトリソ加工する際に用いるフォトマスクの開口領域は、ポジ型に比べて圧倒的に少なくなる。従って生産時フォトマスクに汚れが生じた際にも、ネガ型用のフォトマスクの場合には開口領域に汚れが生じる確率が少なくなる。この様な点から、柱形成の生産性の点からネガ型が好ましい。ネガ型材料としては中でもアクリル系材料が好ましい。
 上記オーバーコート層としては、ジペンタエリスリトールヘキサアクリレートとジペンタエリスリトールペンタアクリレートの混合物(例えば、「アロニックス(登録商標)M-403」、東亞合成社製)、アクリル系樹脂(例えば、「オプトマーSS」、JSR社製)などが挙げられる。
 上記無機絶縁層としては、光学異方性が小さく、所望の絶縁性を備えていればよく、例えば、酸化シリコン層、酸化窒化シリコン層、窒化シリコン層などの単一層またはこれら層の複数の組み合わせによる積層構造としてもよい。
 本発明に係る配向付与成分を含む液晶層は、絶縁層と相互作用を奏する吸着部位を2つ以上備える配向付与化合物を含有する液晶組成物から形成される。具体的には、配向付与化合物と1種以上の液晶化合物とを含む組成物に対してUV照射などで配向付与化合物を硬化させることで配向付与成分を形成する。また、配向付与化合物は絶縁層と相互作用を奏する吸着部位を2つ以上備えるため、絶縁層、電極層などの基板表面の部材と多点で吸着する。前記配向付与化合物と1種以上の液晶化合物とを含む組成物を上記液晶表示素子の電極間に充填すると、前記配向付与化合物が液晶層と絶縁層、電極層などの基板表面との界面に偏在し、この状態で配向付与化合物をUV照射などで硬化させることで基板表面が配向付与成分で被覆されると考えられる。そのため、本発明に係る配向付与成分は、層状に形成していることが好ましい。当該配向付与成分は、基板上の全面を被覆する形であっても基板の一部を被覆する形であってもよい。また、多点で絶縁層に対して固定化しうる吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物又は前記配向付与成分は、基板に対して略垂直方向の配向を液晶分子に付与することが好ましい。上記オーバーコート層やカラーフィルタと配向付与化合物又は配向付与成分との組合せに関しては、両素材の重合性基が同じ、例えばアクリレート系樹脂のオーバーコート層やカラーフィルタとの吸着力が高いと考えられる。
 以下、本発明に係る配向付与化合物と液晶化合物とについて説明する。
 本発明に係る2つ以上の吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物は、メソゲン基と、2つ以上の吸着部位とを有することが好ましい。より具体的には、メソゲン基と、前記メソゲン基から延伸された1以上の側鎖とを有し、前記メソゲン基側から延伸された1以上の側鎖の枝を2つ以上有し、かつ前記側鎖中に2つ以上の吸着部位を有する構造であることが好ましい。より好ましくは、配向付与化合物は、液晶分子と類似するメソゲン基と、前記メソゲン基から延伸された1以上の直線状または分岐状の側鎖とを有し、当該側鎖中に、2以上の吸着部位と、必要により液晶分子の配向を誘起する屈曲基を有することが好ましい。
 また本発明に係る吸着部位は絶縁層と相互作用を奏する部位であり、当該吸着部位は、直接吸着媒と吸着可能な吸着基と重合するための重合性基とを含むことが好ましい。
 したがって、本発明に係る2つ以上の吸着部位を備えた配向付与化合物の特に好ましい形態は、メソゲン基と、吸着基と、重合性基と、屈曲基を有し、吸着基と重合性基との合計数が1分子あたり2以上である。
 本発明に係るメソゲン基は、剛直な部分を備えた基、例えば環式基を1つ以上備えたものをいい、環式基を2~4個を有していることが好ましく、必要に応じ環式基は連結基で連結されていても良い。メソゲン基は液晶層に使用される液晶化合物と類似の骨格であることが好ましい。
 なお、本明細書において「環式基」は、構成する原子が環状に結合した原子団をいい、炭素環、複素環、飽和又は不飽和環式構造、単環、2環式構造、多環式構造、芳香族、非芳香族などを含む。また、環式基は、少なくとも1つのヘテロ原子を含んでもよく、さらに、少なくとも1つの置換基(ハロゲン原子、反応性官能基、有機基(アルキル、アリール等)によって置換されてもよい。環式基が単環である場合には、メソゲン基は2以上の単環を含んでいることが好ましい。
 本明細書で言う「吸着部位の数」とは、絶縁層と相互作用を奏する部位の数をいい、具体的には、メソゲン基と結合する側鎖中の原子から前記側鎖中のある1つの末端原子まで辿る間に、ヘテロ原子と結合した1つの炭素原子の合計数が2つ目になるまで辿った分子鎖の枝数、メソゲン基から側鎖中の1つの先端のヘテロ原子までの側鎖の枝数、又はメソゲン基からヘテロ原子と結合する1つの先端の原子までの側鎖の枝数のいずれかのうち最も小さい数をいう。
 本明細書で言う「重合性基の数」は、側鎖に含まれる下記式(P-1)~式(P-7)で表されるいずれかの基の数をいい、これらの重合性基も吸着性を示す。本明細書で言う「吸着基の数」は、前記吸着部位の数から前記重合性基の数を引いた数をいう。また、「吸着部位」を簡略にいうと、重合性基の数と吸着基の数の合計である。「吸着基の数」を簡略にいうと、メソゲン基と結合する側鎖中に含まれる後述の一般式(T)で表される基の数をいい、より詳細にはメソゲン基と結合する側鎖中に含まれる後述の一般式(T-1-1)~(T-7-1)からなる群から選択される少なくとも1つで表される基の数をいい、より具体的には、側鎖の末端の-OH基、側鎖の末端の-NH、側鎖の末端の-CN基、側鎖の末端のシクロカーボネート基又は側鎖中に含まれる-C(=O)-(CH)z-C(=O)-基(zは0~3の整数である。)の数の合計を言う。
 例えば、以下の化合物の吸着部位の数は4であり、下記式(P-1)を含む2つの重合性基と2つの吸着基を有する。なお、別の吸着部位の定義では、下記の左下の側鎖部の化学式に示す通り、メソゲン基と結合する炭素原子から末端原子の一つのメチル基の水素原子まで辿る間に、ヘテロ原子と結合した1つの炭素原子の合計数が2つ目になるまで辿った分子鎖の枝数は黒い太線の1つである(別の末端原子の一つの=CHの水素原子と同じ枝になる)。また下記の左下の側鎖部が2つあるので配向付与化合物の吸着部位は2つ以上存在し、さらに、下記の右下の側鎖部の化学式に示す通り、メソゲン基と結合する酸素原子からある1つの末端原子である水素原子まで辿る間に、ヘテロ原子と結合した1つの炭素原子の合計数が2つ目になるまで辿った分子鎖の枝数は黒い太線と、白い枠線の2つになるため、この2つの吸着部位を加えると、合計4つになる。

 本発明に係る吸着部位の数の下限は、2以上であり、3以上が好ましく、4以上がより好ましい。本発明に係る吸着部位の数の上限は、10以下であることが好ましく、8以下であることがより好ましい。吸着部位が多すぎると液晶組成物中における配向付与化合物の相溶性が悪化し析出する。一方、吸着部位が少なすぎると基板や絶縁層に対する固定力が低減するため、表示ムラが生じる。
 本発明に係る吸着基の数の下限は、1以上であり、2以上が好ましく、3以上がより好ましい。本発明に係る吸着部位の数の上限は、8以下であることが好ましく、7以下であることがより好ましい。吸着基が多すぎると液晶組成物中における配向付与化合物の相溶性が悪化し析出する。一方、吸着基が少なすぎると基板や絶縁層に対する固定力が低減するため、表示ムラが生じる。
 本発明に係る重合性基の数の下限は、1以上であり、2以上が好ましく、3以上がより好ましい。本発明に係る重合性基の数の上限は、8以下であることが好ましく、6以下であることがより好ましい。重合性基が多すぎると液晶組成物中における配向付与化合物の相溶性が悪化し析出する。一方、重合性基が少なすぎると基板や絶縁層に対する固定力が低減するため、表示ムラが生じる。
 本発明に係る吸着基は、上記重合性基とは異なる基であり、絶縁層と相互作用を奏する基をいう。具体的には、本発明に係る吸着基は、基板、膜、電極などの吸着媒と吸着する役割を備えた基である。吸着は、一般的に、化学結合(共有結合、イオン結合又は金属結合)をつくって吸着媒と吸着質との間で吸着する化学吸着、又は当該化学吸着以外の物理吸着に分別され、本明細書の吸着は化学吸着又は物理吸着のいずれでもよいが、物理吸着により吸着媒と吸着することが好ましい。そのため、本発明に係る吸着基は、吸着媒と物理吸着可能な基であることが好ましく、当該吸着基は分子間力により吸着媒と結合することがより好ましい。当該分子間力により吸着媒と結合する形態としては、永久双極子、永久四重極子、分散力、電荷移動力又は水素結合などの相互作用により吸着媒と結合していることが挙げられる。本発明に係る吸着基の好ましい形態としては、水素結合により吸着媒と結合可能な形態が挙げられる。この場合、本発明に係る吸着基が水素結合を介在するプロトンのドナー若しくはアクセプターになってもよく、また両方であってもよい。
 本発明に係る吸着基は、炭素原子とヘテロ原子とが連結した原子団を有する極性要素を含む基であることが好ましい。本明細書でいう極性要素とは、炭素原子とヘテロ原子とが直接連結した原子団をいう。上記ヘテロ原子としては、N、O、S、P、B及びSiからなる群から選択される少なくとも1種であることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る吸着部位2つ以上有する化合物において、吸着基は、一分子中に1~8個有することが好ましく、1~4個有することがより好ましく、1~3個有することがさらに好ましい。
 本発明に係る極性要素の種類は、具体的には、酸素原子を含む極性要素(以下、含酸素極性要素)、窒素原子を含む極性要素(以下、含窒素極性要素)、リン原子を含む極性要素(以下、含リン極性要素)、ホウ素原子を含む極性要素(以下、含ホウ素極性要素)、ケイ素原子を含む極性要素(以下、含ケイ素極性要素)又は硫黄原子を含む極性要素(以下、含硫黄極性要素)で表される部分構造であることが好ましく、吸着能の観点から、含窒素極性要素、含窒素極性要素又は含酸素極性要素がより好ましく、含酸素極性要素がさらに好ましい。
 上記含酸素極性要素としては、水酸基(-OH)、アルキロール基(-R-OH;Rはアルキレン基)、アルコキシ基(-OR;但し、Rはアルキル基)、ホルミル基(-CHO)、カルボキシル基(-COOH)、エーテル基(-ROR’-;但し、R、R’はアルキレン基又はアルケニレン基)、カルボニル基(-C(=O)-)、カルボニルオキシ基(-C(=O)-O-)、カーボネート基(-O-C(=O)-O-)及びエステル基(-COOR’-;但しR’はアルキレン基又はアルケニレン基)からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種の基又は当該基が炭素原子に連結している基であることが好ましい。
 上記含窒素極性要素としては、シアノ基(-CN)、1級アミノ基(-NH)、2級アミノ基(-NH-)、3級アミノ基(-NRR’;但し、R,R’はアルキル基)、ピリジル基、カルバモイル基(-CONH)及びウレイド基(-NHCONH)からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種の基又は当該基が炭素原子に連結している基であることが好ましい。
 上記含リン極性要素としては、ホスフィニル基(-CX-P(=O)H)及びリン酸基(-CX-OP(=O)(OH))からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種の基又は当該基が炭素原子に連結している基であることが好ましい。
 上記含ホウ素極性要素としては、ホウ酸基(-B(OH))が炭素原子に連結している基であることが好ましい。
 上記含ケイ素極性要素としては、-Si(OH)基又は-Si(OR)(OR’)(OR’’);但し、R,R’,R’’はアルキル基)基が炭素原子に連結している基であることが好ましい。
 上記含硫黄極性要素としては、メルカプト基(-SH)、スルフィド基(-S-)、スルフィニル基(-S(=O)-)、スルホニル基(-SO-)、スルホンアミド基(-SONH)、スルホ酸基(-SOH)及びスルフィノ基(-S(=O)OH)からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種の基又は当該基が炭素原子に連結している基であることが好ましい。
 そのため、本発明に係る吸着基は、環式基が含酸素極性要素を備えた基(以下、含酸素環式基)、環式基が窒素原子極性要素を備えた基(以下、含窒素環式基)、環式基が含リン極性要素を備えた基(以下、含リン環式基)、環式基が含ホウ素極性要素を備えた基(以下、含ホウ素環式基)、環式基が含ケイ素極性要素を備えた基(以下、含ケイ素環式基)、環式基が含硫黄極性要素を備えた基(以下、含硫黄環式基)、鎖式基が含酸素極性要素を備えた基(以下、含酸素鎖式基)、鎖式基が窒素原子極性要素を備えた基(以下、含窒素鎖式基)、鎖式基が含リン極性要素を備えた基(以下、含リン鎖式基)、鎖式基が含ホウ素極性要素を備えた基(以下、含ホウ素鎖式基)、鎖式基が含ケイ素極性要素を備えた基(以下、含ケイ素鎖式基)及び鎖式基が含硫黄極性要素を備えた基(以下、含硫黄鎖式基)からなる群から選択される1種又は2種以上の基を含むことが好ましく、吸着能の観点から含酸素環式基、含硫黄環式基、含酸素鎖式基及び含窒素鎖式基からなる群から選択される1種又は2種以上の基を含むことがより好ましい。
 本発明に係る吸着基としては、以下の一般式(T)で表される基が好ましい。

 本発明に係る配向付与化合物において、吸着基に含まれる極性要素や重合性基に含まれる極性部分を局在化させる形態が好ましい。吸着基は液晶組成物を垂直配向させるために重要な構造であり、吸着基と重合性基とが隣接していることで、より良好な配向性が得られ、また液晶組成物への良好な溶解性を示す。具体的には、メソゲン基の同一環上に重合性基及び吸着基を有する形態が好ましい。この場合、1以上の重合性基及び1以上の吸着基が直接又はスペーサー基を介してそれぞれ同一環上に結合している形態と、1以上の重合性基の少なくとも一つ又は1以上の吸着基の少なくとも一つのうち、一方が他方に結合して、同一環上に重合性基及び吸着基を有する形態とを含む。
 また、本発明に係る配向付与化合物において、Pal-Spal-の1以上の水素原子は、吸着基に置換されてもよい。この場合の好ましい形態としては、Pal又は必要により当該重合性基に連結されるSpalの1以上の水素原子が吸着基に置換されている形態が挙げられ、より好ましい形態としては、Pa1-Spa1-中の1以上の水素原子が上記一般式(T)で表される吸着基に置換されている形態が挙げられる。
 例えば、吸着基と重合性基とが連結した好適な形態としては、以下の式(T-1-1.1)、(T-6-1.1)又は(T-5-1.1)が挙げられる。

 上記式(T-5-1.1)において、Lt151a及びLt151aはそれぞれ独立して、メチレン基、エチレン基、ビニリデン基、ビニレン基、イソプロペニレン基またはエチリデン基が好ましい。
 上記式(T-1-1.1)、(T-6-1.1)及び(T-5-1.1)において、
t11a、nt11b、nt16a、nt16b、nt151a及びnt151bはそれぞれ独立して、1~8の整数であることが好ましく、1~5の整数であることがより好ましい。
 「屈曲基」
 本発明に係る屈曲基は、液晶分子の配向を誘導する機能を有しており、直鎖状若しくは分岐状の炭素原子数1~20のアルキレン基を表すことが好ましく、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~20のアルキレン基を表すことがより好ましく、直鎖状の炭素原子数2~15のアルキレン基を表すことがより好ましい。また、当該アルキレン基中の1個又は隣接していない2個以上の-CH-は、それぞれ独立して、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-O-、-CO-、-COO-又は-OCO-によって置換されていてもよい。
 配向付与化合物が液晶層に対していわゆる両親媒性を備えている観点から上記屈曲基は、メソゲン基に結合していることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る配向付与化合物において、上記屈曲基は、1~6つ有することが好ましく、1~4つ有することがより好ましく、1~3つ有することがさらに好ましい。
 上記配向付与化合物において、液晶層となじみにくい吸着基や重合性基などの極性部と、液晶層となじみやすいメソゲン基や屈曲基などの非極性部とは、分子内で偏在していることが好ましく、いわゆる液晶層に対して両親媒性を示すことが好ましい。そのため、本発明に係る配向付与化合物は、メソゲン基の一方の端部に液晶分子を配向させる屈曲基を有し、メソゲン基の他方の端部に重合性基及び吸着基を有する構造が好ましい。液晶層と基板との界面近傍では界面自由エネルギーが高くなるため、液晶層に対して親和性がある非極性部と、液晶層に対して親和性が低い極性部とを一分子内に有する物質が界面上に並ぶことにより、界面自由エネルギーを低下させると考えられる。
 本発明の液晶組成物における配向付与化合物の含有量の下限は、0.02質量%が好ましく、0.03質量%が好ましく、0.04質量%が好ましく、0.05質量%が好ましく、0.06質量%が好ましく、0.07質量%が好ましく、0.08質量%が好ましく、0.09質量%が好ましく、0.1質量%が好ましく、0.12質量%が好ましく、0.15質量%が好ましく、0.17質量%が好ましく、0.2質量%が好ましく、0.22質量%が好ましく、0.25質量%が好ましく、0.27質量%が好ましく、0.3質量%が好ましく、0.32質量%が好ましく、0.35質量%が好ましく、0.37質量%が好ましく、0.4質量%が好ましく、0.42質量%が好ましく、0.45質量%が好ましく、0.5質量%が好ましく、0.55質量%が好ましい。本発明の液晶組成物における一般式(I)で表される重合性化合物の含有量の上限は、2.5質量%が好ましく、2.3質量%が好ましく、2.1質量%が好ましく、2質量%が好ましく、1.8質量%が好ましく、1.6質量%が好ましく、1.5質量%が好ましく、1質量%が好ましく、0.95質量%が好ましく、0.9質量%が好ましく、0.85質量%が好ましく、0.8質量%が好ましく、0.75質量%が好ましく、0.7質量%が好ましく、0.65質量%が好ましく、0.6質量%が好ましく、0.55質量%が好ましく、0.5質量%が好ましく、0.45質量%が好ましく、0.4質量%が好ましい。
 本発明に係る配向付与化合物の特に好適な具体例は、以下の一般式(al-1-1)で表される化合物である。

 本発明に係る液晶表示素子において、配向付与化合物を含有する液晶組成物から配向付与成分を含む液晶層を形成する方法は、必須成分である配向付与化合物と必要により含まれる重合性化合物とを重合することが好ましく、当該必須成分である配向付与化合物と必要により含まれる重合性化合物とを重合させる方法としては、液晶の良好な配向性能を得るためには、適度な重合速度が望ましいので、紫外線又は電子線等の活性エネルギー線を単一又は併用又は順番に照射することによって重合させる方法が好ましい。紫外線を使用する場合、偏光光源を用いても良いし、非偏光光源を用いても良い。また、液晶組成物を2枚の基板間に挟持させた状態で重合を行う場合には、少なくとも照射面側の基板は活性エネルギー線に対して適当な透明性が与えられていなければならない。また、光照射時にマスクを用いて特定の部分のみを重合させた後、電場や磁場又は温度等の条件を変化させることにより、未重合部分の配向状態を変化させて、更に活性エネルギー線を照射して重合させるという手段を用いても良い。特に紫外線露光する際には、液晶組成物に交流電界を印加しながら紫外線露光することが好ましい。印加する交流電界は、周波数10Hzから10kHzの交流が好ましく、周波数60Hzから10kHzがより好ましく、電圧は液晶表示素子の所望のプレチルト角に依存して選ばれる。つまり、印加する電圧により液晶表示素子のプレチルト角を制御することができる。PSVAモードの液晶表示素子においては、配向安定性及びコントラストの観点からプレチルト角を80度から89.9度に制御することが好ましい。
 本発明の液晶組成物に含まれる配向付与化合物や重合性化合物を重合させる際に使用する紫外線又は電子線等の活性エネルギー線の照射時の温度は特に制限されることはない。例えば、配向膜を有する基板を備えた液晶表示素子に本発明の液晶組成物を適用する場合は、前記液晶組成物の液晶状態が保持される温度範囲内であることが好ましい。室温に近い温度、即ち、典型的には15~35℃で重合させることが好ましい。
 一方、例えば、配向膜を有していない基板を備えた液晶表示素子に本発明の液晶組成物を適用する場合は、上記の配向膜を有する基板を備えた液晶表示素子に適用する照射時の温度範囲より広い温度範囲でもよい。
 紫外線を発生させるランプとしては、メタルハライドランプ、高圧水銀ランプ、超高圧水銀ランプ等を用いることができる。また、照射する紫外線の波長としては、液晶組成物の吸収波長域でない波長領域の紫外線を照射することが好ましく、必要に応じて、紫外線をカットして使用することが好ましい。照射する紫外線の強度は、0.1mW/cm~100W/cmが好ましく、2mW/cm~50W/cmが更に好ましい。照射する紫外線のエネルギー量は、適宜調整することができるが、10mJ/cmから500J/cmが好ましく、100mJ/cmから200J/cmが更に好ましい。紫外線を照射する際に、強度を変化させても良い。紫外線を照射する時間は照射する紫外線強度により適宜選択されるが、10秒から3600秒が好ましく、10秒から600秒が更に好ましい。
 以下に実施例を挙げて本発明を更に詳述するが、本発明はこれらの実施例に限定されるものではない。また、以下の実施例及び比較例の組成物における「%」は「質量%」を意味する。実施例において化合物の記載について以下の略号を用いる。
 図8は、一分子中に含まれる吸着基および重合性基の合計数である吸着部位の数と、配向度との関係を示すグラフである。また、図8における配向度とは、配向付与化合物を含む液晶組成物B~Eを所定量ITO電極基板上に滴下し、有機絶縁膜(オプトマーSS(アクリル樹脂) JSR社製)を最表面にコーティングした対向基板と真空下で貼り合せ、シール硬化(シール部のみにUV照射し120度で1時間アニール)した後、液晶配向をクロスニコル条件下偏光板に液晶セルを挟み、液晶部分からの光の透過度合い(輝度ムラ)を確認した結果に対して、以下の3段階の基準で優劣判定を行った実験結果である。
 不十分:セル面内のほぼ全面が黒くなっていない。
 やや不足:液晶を滴下した付近のみが黒くなっている。
 かなり良い:セル面内のほぼ全面に渡り黒く表示されている。
 上記3段階の基準を具体的に示すと、図8における配向度は「かなり良い」は図9C又は図9Dに相当し、液晶セルの全面からの光の透過が確認されない。図8における配向度は「やや不足」は、図9Bに相当し、液晶セルの縁部からの少し光の透過が確認される。図8における配向度は「不十分」は、図9Aに相当し、液晶は垂直配向とならず、水平配向に近い形となるため、光り抜けが発生する。
 一分子中に含まれる吸着基および重合性基の合計数を1から4つの化合物(b)~化合物(e)を用意し、それぞれに対して同一の液晶組成物を混合した場合、図8によれば、一分子中に含まれる吸着基および重合性基の合計数が1つだと配向度が不十分であるが、一分子中に含まれる吸着基および重合性基の合計数が3以上だと、表示ムラが少なく配向度が良好な結果が得られた。その結果を図9に示す。
 図9は、配向付与化合物を含む液晶組成物B~Eを充填した液晶セルの配向度を示す写真である。図9A~図9Dに示す通り、吸着部位が1つの化合物(b)を用いた液晶表示素子では、光り抜けが発生しており液晶分子が垂直に配向していないことが確認される。一方、吸着部位が3つ以上の化合物(c)、(d)を用いた液晶表示素子では、液晶セルの全面からの光の透過が確認されない。また、吸着部位が4つの場合、若干であるが全体として光の透過率が低い結果となった。
 上記結果から、吸着部位の数が1個だと、液晶配向を誘起する配向付与化合物が基板界面への吸着度合いが弱く、十分な垂直配向性が得られない。しかし、吸着部位の数が2、3,4個と増やしていく事で、液晶配向を誘起する配向付与化合物の基板界面への吸着度合いが強くなり、十分な垂直配向性が得られるようになると考えている。
 尚、配向付与化合物を含む液晶組成物B~Eの作製方法は以下の通りである。
 負の誘電率異方性を示す化合物と、中性の誘電率異方性を示す化合物とを混合した基準液晶組成物Aを調製した。20℃での各物性値は、誘電率異方性(Δε):-3.0、屈折率異方性(Δn):0.112、ネマチック相上限温度(Tni):77℃、回転粘度(γ1):110 mPa/sであった。
 次いで、基準液晶組成物A100質量部に対して、以下の式(a)で表される重合性化合物0.3質量部を添加した後、一分子中に含まれる吸着部位の数(吸着基および重合性基の合計数)が1~4の化合物として、以下の化合物(b)、化合物(c)、化合物(d)および化合物(e)をそれぞれ1.0質量部添加した液晶組成物B~液晶組成物Eを調製し、各組成物の物性値を測定した。化合物(b)、化合物(c)、化合物(d)および化合物(e)のそれぞれの化学構造と、吸着部位(吸着基および重合性基の合計)およびその数を以下に示す。

 また、上記作製した配向付与化合物を含む液晶組成物B~Eを充填した液晶セルそれぞれに対して、周波数100Hzで電圧を10V印加した状態で高圧水銀灯を用い、325nm以下の紫外線をカットするフィルターを介して紫外線を照射した。このとき、中心波長365nmの条件で測定した照度が100mW/cmになるように調整し、積算光量30J/cmの紫外線を照射した。これにより、配向付与化合物および重合性化合物を硬化することで配向付与成分を液晶層中に形成した液晶表示素子を作製した。その結果、当該液晶表示素子の配向度は、硬化する前後で変化がなかったことを確認した。

Claims (9)

  1.  第1の基板および前記第1の基板と対向して設けられた第2の基板と、
    前記第1の基板上に設けられた第1の絶縁層および第1の電極層と、
    前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に設けられ、液晶分子に配向を付与する配向付与成分を含有する液晶層とを有し、
    前記液晶層は、前記第1の絶縁層と相互作用を奏する吸着部位を2つ以上備える配向付与化合物を含有する液晶組成物から形成されることを特徴とする液晶表示素子。
  2.  前記絶縁層は、有機絶縁層または無機絶縁層である、請求項1に記載の液晶表示素子。
  3.  前記第2の基板上に第2の有機層および第2の電極層を有する請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示素子。
  4.  前記吸着部位として吸着基と重合性基とを有し、前記吸着基の数と前記重合性基の数との合計が2以上である、請求項1~3のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子。
  5.  前記液晶層中の前記配向付与成分は、前記第1の基板表面を被覆する請求項1~4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子。
  6.  前記第1の電極層は、フィッシュボーン型の画素電極を有する、請求項1~5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子。
  7.  前記配向付与化合物は2~5個の環式基が連結したメソゲン基を有し、前記メソゲン基の長軸方向の一端の1つの前記環式基に対して前記吸着部位が連結されている、請求項1~6のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子。
  8.  前記第1の絶縁層が有機絶縁層であり、当該有機絶縁層と前記配向付与成分とが当接している、請求項1~7のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子。
  9.  前記配向付与化合物及び前記配向付与成分は、前記第1の基板又は前記第2の基板に対して略垂直方向の配向を前記液晶層中の液晶分子に付与する、請求項1~8のいずれか1項に記載の液晶表示素子。
