Summary
Technical Problem
However, the conventional cover structure around a motorcycle step requires separate cover parts, resulting in more components and cost increase. Moreover, during assembly work, attention should be given to align the cover parts with each other, which reduces workability. In particular, the vicinity of the step for the driver to rest his/her foot on is easily damaged or soiled due to foot operation such as shifting operation and braking operation, and this section alone may be formed with a separate component. In such a case, however, the number of components increases to increase the cost, and in addition, the workability in assembly is reduced, as described above.
The present invention is made in view of such circumstances and aims to provide a cover structure around a motorcycle step, in which a step portion located forward of the step and not having its outer surface painted in a color different from the color of the material of a cover member is integrally formed in a center cover, thereby reducing the number of components to reduce costs, and improving easiness of assembly. An embodiment of the present invention will be specifically described below with reference to the drawings.
A cover structure around a motorcycle step according to the present embodiment is applied to a motorcycle shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and mainly includes: a step 30 that is provided below a motorcycle seat 16 for a driver to sit on and that the driver is supposed to rest his/her foot on; and a center cover 33 (right center cover 33R and left center cover 33L) formed of a cover member for covering the side of the motorcycle. The cover member covers a section below the seat 16 and the vicinity of the step 30. Additionally, in the drawings, the vehicle forward side is denoted by a reference sign FR, the vehicle rearward side is denoted by a reference sign RR, the vehicle right side is denoted by a reference sign RS, and the vehicle left side is denoted by a reference sign LS.
Additionally, as shown in the drawings, the motorcycle applied in the present embodiment includes a handle cover 1, a front cover 2, a head light 3, a rear- view mirror 4, a handle 5, a front tire 6, a front fender 7, a leg shield 8, a main pipe side cover 9 covering the side of a main pipe 11, a head pipe 10, the main pipe 11, a seat frame 12 for supporting the seat 16, a canister 13, a back stay 14 extending rearward of the seat frame 12, a pillion step bracket 15 for supporting a pillion step 22, a utility box 17 formed of a container provided under the seat 16, a rear side cover 18, a rear fender 19, a rear tire 20, a muffler 21, the pillion step 22 formed on the vehicle rearward side for a pillion passenger to rest his/her foot on, a pivot frame 23, a pivot shaft 24, a swing arm 25 coupled to the main pipe 11 with the pivot shaft 24 interposed therebetween, a rear cushion 26, an engine 27 serving as a drive source, an engine case 28, an exhaust pipe 29, a brake pedal 31 , and a gear operating pedal 32.
The center cover 33 (cover member) is formed of a resin molded product extending integrally from a section below the seat 16 to a step portion 33a located forward of the step 30 (the right side in Figs. 1 and 2). As shown in Fig. 3, the center cover 33 includes a right center cover 33R covering the vehicle right side and a left center cover 33L covering the vehicle left side. As shown in Figs. 3 and 8, the right center cover 33R and the left center cover 33L overlap in alignment with each other together with a rearward portion of a main pipe upper cover 36 at the center of the vehicle and are fastened together with a bolt B2.
As shown in Fig. 9, the center cover 33 according to the present embodiment (the right center cover 33R and the left center cover 33L) is formed integrally with the step portion 33a as well as a bracket cover portion 33b and a utility box cover portion 33 c. The bracket cover portion 33b covers the side of the pillion step bracket 15 of the motorcycle. The utility box cover portion 33c covers the side of the utility box 17. Additionally, at the vehicle rear side of the center cover 33 (the left side in Figs. 1 and 2), connection holes hi for connection with the rear side cover 18 and a bolt fastening portion H2 are formed.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the step portion 33a includes a section located at the toe of the driver's foot rested on the step 30. The foot toe may interfere with this section during operation of the brake pedal 31 and the gear operating pedal 32. In addition, as shown in Figs. 2 and 9, the step portion 33a according to the present embodiment has a lower end formed to be bent approximately in an inverted V shape and extend to a position below the step 30 (as shown in Fig. 1, the position below an installation position M for the step 30). That is, the center cover 33 according to the present embodiment is formed of the cover member extending over the engine case 28 in the motorcycle and is formed integrally with the step portion 33a at a position that covers the section above the step 30.
Furthermore, the step portion 33a covers the section forward of the engine case 28. As shown in Fig. 9, the lower end of the step portion 33a has an edge portion 33ab extending from a bend apex portion 33aa to the vehicle forward side and an edge portion 33ac extending from the bend apex portion 33aa to the vehicle rearward side. The edge portion 33ab, the bend apex portion 33aa, and the edge portion 33ac as a whole are shaped so as to be bent in an inverted V shape (a notch shape projecting upward). This configuration improves the strength of the step portion 33a and ensures that the range of the driver's foot operation is covered.
Furthermore, as shown in Fig. 4, the step portion 33a is to be connected to a section on the rearward side in the main pipe side cover 9 of the motorcycle (the left-side section in Figs. 1 and 2). As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the main pipe side cover 9 has a pawl 9a mounted in engagement with an engagement hole 35 formed in the step portion 33 a. This configuration facilitates the positioning and assembly of the center cover 33 to the main pipe side cover 9. In addition, the pawl 9a is formed in the main pipe side cover 9, which is relatively large in size to ensure the rigidity of the pawl 9a and prevent cracks and other damages.
Furthermore, as shown in Figs. 4 and 9, the step portion 33a has a bolt fastening portion HI at its bottom. As shown in Fig. 5, the bolt fastening portion HI is superimposed on the back surface side of a bolt fastening portion K4 formed in the main pipe side cover 9 of the motorcycle and is fastened together with a bolt Bl. Specifically, as shown in the drawing, the bolt B 1 is inserted and screwed in a nut Nl firmly welded to a stay 34 for supporting the main pipe side cover 9, whereby the main pipe side cover 9 and the step portion 33a are fastened together. This configuration strengthens the fixing structure of the center cover 33 to the main pipe side cover 9. In addition, since the bolt fastening portion HI formed in the step portion 33a is superimposed on the back surface side of the bolt fastening portion K4 formed in the main pipe side cover 9 and is fastened together with the bolt Bl, the bolt fastening portion HI is hidden from the outer surface of the step portion 33 a, thereby avoiding interference of the foot with the bolt fastening portion HI during the driver's foot operation.
The bracket cover portion 33b includes a section that covers the side of the pillion step bracket 15 as shown in Figs. 10, 12, and 13 and has a bolt fastening portion H3 to be coupled with the pillion step bracket 15 as shown in Figs. 9 and 11. That is, as shown in Fig. 11 , a bolt B3 inserted in the bolt fastening portion H3 is inserted through a bolt hole formed in the pillion step bracket 15 and screwed in a nut N2, whereby the bracket cover portion 33b is fastened to the pillion step bracket 15. Additionally, the pillion step bracket 15 is thus covered and protected. Additionally, the pillion step bracket 15 is fastened to the back stay 14 with a bolt B4 as shown in Figs. 12 and 13.
In addition, the pillion step 22 according to the present embodiment is pivotable between a protruding state in which the pillion passenger may rest his/her foot on the pillion step 22 and a retracted state in which the pillion step 22 is folded and retracted. The bracket cover portion 33b is fastened to the pillion step bracket 15 at a position where it overlaps with the pillion step 22 and is hidden when the pillion step 22 is in the retracted state. That is, the pillion step 22 is folded and retracted in a range P shown by the dashed and double-dotted line in Fig. 10 in the retracted state, and the bolt fastening portion H3 is formed within the range P. This configuration improves the appearance design when the pillion step 22 is in the retracted state.
Furthermore, as shown in Fig. 10, the bracket cover portion 33b according to the present embodiment has a step bracket receiving portion 33ba fitted in a support section 37 for the pillion step 22 (a base on which the pillion step 22 is pivotably mounted) in the pillion step bracket 15. Specifically, the step bracket receiving portion 33ba is formed of a notch in conformity with the shape of the outer periphery of the support section 37 and can be temporarily secured by fitting the step bracket receiving portion 33ba in alignment with the support section 37. Thus, when the center cover 33 is assembled to the vehicle, the step bracket receiving portion 33ba can be fitted in the support section 37 of the pillion step 22 to be temporarily secured, thereby improving easiness of assembly.
Additionally, the utility box cover portion 33 c is formed of a section that covers the side of the utility box 17 under the seat 16, and is mounted on the vehicle with a bolt inserted in the bolt fastening portion H2. The center cover 33 according to the present embodiment (the right center cover 33R and the left center cover 33L) is formed of the cover member formed integrally with the step portion 33 a, the bracket cover portion 33b, and the utility box cover portion 33c and is to be mounted on the vehicle.
Here, almost the whole of the center cover 33 according to the present embodiment, including the step portion 33 a, is formed to be unpainted and in a dark color. That is, the center cover 33 is not coated with paint on its surface and formed in a dark color such as black or navy blue. This configuration minimizes scratches and dirt due to foot operation such as shifting operation and braking operation, and if any, scratches and dirt on the step portion 33a are less noticeable. Thus, in the cover member (that is, the center cover 33 according to the present embodiment) that covers the section below the seat 16 and the vicinity of the step 30, the unpainted and dark-color step portion 33a located forward of the step 30 is integrally formed, thereby reducing the number of components to reduce costs, and improving easiness of assembly.
In particular, almost the whole of the center cover 33 according to the present embodiment, including the step portion 33 a, is formed to be unpainted and in a dark color, thereby reducing costs compared with a product in which the step portion 33a alone is unpainted and in a dark color. In addition, since a large part of the center cover 33 is hidden under the driver's foot when the driver sits on the seat 16, having the center cover 33 unpainted and in a dark color does not impair the appearance design, and the number of components can be reduced to reduce costs, and easiness of assembly can be improved.
However, The center cover 33 according to the present embodiment is thus configured to extend integrally from at least part of the section below the seat 16 to the step portion 33a located forward of the step 30 and not having its outer surface painted in a color different from the material color and such that the lower end of the step portion 33a extends to below the step 30. Additionally, the step portion 33a may be coated with clear paint having the same color as the material color.
Although the present embodiment has been described above, the present invention is not limited to this embodiment. As long as at least the step portion 33a is formed so as not to be painted in a color different from the material color, for example, a section other than the step portion 33a may be coated with paint or may be colored with a color different from dark colors. In addition, in the center cover 33 according to the present embodiment, besides the step portion 33 a, the bracket cover portion 33b is integrally formed. However, the center cover 33 may not have the bracket cover portion 33b. Additionally, in a vehicle not equipped with the utility box 17, for example, the utility box cover portion 33c may not be formed.
Industrial Applicability
The cover structure around a motorcycle footstep, in which the cover member is formed of the center cover (33) that extends integrally from at least part of the section below the seat to the step portion (33 a) located forward of the step and not having its outer surface painted in a color different from the material color of the cover member and the step portion has a lower end extending to below the step, is applicable to any other structure that has a different outer shape or other additional functions.
