Abstract
본 발명은 실리콘계 입자; 상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 형성되어 있는 탄소 코팅층; 및 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 형성되어 있는 고분자 코팅층을 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체로서, 본 발명의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 리튬 이온의 삽입에 따른 부피 팽창이 감소되어 높은 수명 특성을 발휘할 수 있으므로, 음극 활물질에 포함될 시 리튬 이차전지의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 리튬 이차전지용 음극 활물질 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 이차전지의 제조에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

[기술분야]
본 발명은 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체, 및 이를 포함하는 음극 활물질에 관한 것으로, 더욱 자세하게는 리튬 이온의 삽입에 따른 부피 팽창이 감소하여 음극 활물질에 포함시 리튬 이차전지의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있는 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체, 및 이를 포함하는 음극 활물질에 관한 것이다.
모바일 기기에 대한 기술 개발과 수요가 증가함에 따라 에너지원으로서의 이차전지에 대한 수요가 급격히 증가하고 있고, 그러한 이차전지 중에서도 높은 에너지 밀도와 작동 전위를 나타내고, 사이클 수명이 길며, 자기방전율이 낮은 리튬 이차전지가 상용화되어 널리 사용되고 있다.
리튬 이차 전지는 일반적으로 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 분리막 및 전해질로 구성되며 리튬 이온의 삽입-탈리(intercalation-decalation)에 의해 충전 및 방전이 이루어지는 이차 전지이다. 리튬 이차 전지는 에너지 밀도(energy density)가 높고, 기전력이 크며 고용량을 발휘할 수 있는 장점을 가지므로 다양한 분야에 적용되고 있다.
한편, 리튬 이차 전지의 양극을 구성하는 양극 활물질로서는 LiCoO2, LiMnO2, LiMn2O4 또는 LiCrO2와 같은 금속 산화물이 이용되고 있으며, 음극을 구성하는 음극 활물질로서는 금속 리튬(metal lithium), 흑연(graphite) 또는 활성탄(activated carbon) 등의 탄소계 물질(carbon based meterial), 또는 산화실리콘(SiOx) 등의 물질이 사용되고 있다. 상기 음극 활물질 중에서도 초기에는 금속 리튬이 주로 사용되었으나 충전 및 방전 사이클이 진행됨에 따라 금속 리튬 표면에 리튬 원자가 성장하여 분리막을 손상시켜 전지를 파손시키는 현상이 발생하여 최근에는 탄소계 물질이 주로 사용되고 있다. 그러나, 탄소계 물질의 경우 이론 용량이 약 400 mAh/g에 불과하여 용량이 작다는 단점을 지니고 있다.
따라서, 음극 활물질로서 높은 이론 용량(4,200 mAh/g)을 가지는 실리콘(silicon, Si)을 이용하여 상기 탄소계 물질을 대체하려는 다양한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 실리콘에 리튬이 삽입되는 경우의 반응식은 다음과 같다:

그러나, 대부분의 실리콘 음극 물질은 리튬 삽입에 의하여 최대 300%까지 실리콘 부피가 팽창하며 이로 인해 음극이 파괴되어 높은 사이클 특성을 나타내지 못한다는 단점이 있다. 또한, 실리콘의 경우, 사이클이 지속됨에 따라 상기 리튬 삽입에 의하여 부피 팽창이 일어나고, 분쇄(pulverization), 도전재(conducting agents) 및 집전체(current collector)와의 접촉 누손(contact losses), 및 불안정한 고체-전해액 인터페이스(solid-electrolyte-interphase, SEI) 형성과 같은 퇴화 거동(fading mechanism)을 나타낼 수 있다.
따라서, 이와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위하여, 나노와이어(nanowire), 나노튜브(nanotube), 나노입자(nanoparticle), 다공성 구조(porous structures) 및 탄소계 물질과의 복합체 형성과 같은, 구조가 제어된 실리콘 나노 구조체를 이용하는 연구가 보고되어 있다. 일례로, 탄소가 코팅된 실리콘 나노 구조체가 연구되었지만, 이를 음극 활물질로 사용한 리튬 이차 전지는 충방전 사이클이 반복됨에 따라 음극 활물질이 지닌 용량이 유지되지 못하는 단점이 있었다. 다르게는, 다공성 탄소-실리콘 복합체의 합성에 대한 연구가 진행되었지만, 복잡한 구조체의 형태 제어 기술과, 높은 공정 단가 등의 문제로 복합체의 합성 기술의 한계를 드러내고 있다.
따라서, 저가의 비용으로 비교적 쉽고 대량 생산이 가능하면서, 상기 종래의 실리콘 사용으로 인한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는, 실리콘 함유 복합체 및 이의 제조 방법의 개발이 여전히 요구되고 있는 실정이다.
본 발명의 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 리튬 이온의 삽입에 따른 부피 팽창이 감소되어 리튬 이차전지의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 다른 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질, 및 상기 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 또 다른 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 상기 음극을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공하는 것이다.
상기 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 본 발명은
실리콘계 입자;
상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 형성되어 있는 탄소 코팅층; 및
상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 형성되어 있는 고분자 코팅층을 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 제공한다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 다른 과제를 해결하기 위하여, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질, 상기 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 및 상기 음극을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공한다.
본 발명의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 리튬 이온의 삽입에 따른 부피 팽창이 감소되어 높은 수명 특성을 발휘할 수 있으므로, 음극 활물질에 포함될 시 리튬 이차전지의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 리튬 이차전지용 음극 활물질 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 이차전지의 제조에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

이하, 본 발명에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 본 발명을 더욱 상세하게 설명한다.
본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
본 발명의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 실리콘계 입자; 상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 형성되어 있는 탄소 코팅층; 및 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 형성되어 있는 고분자 코팅층을 포함하는 것이다.
상기 실리콘계 입자는 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 내부에 포함될 수 있고, 예컨대 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 내부의 코어를 이룰 수 있다.
상기 실리콘계 입자는 Si, 실리콘 산화물 입자(SiOx, 0<x≤2), Si-금속합금, 및 Si와 실리콘 산화물 입자(SiOx, 0<x≤2)의 합금으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있고, 구체적으로 Si, 실리콘 산화물 입자(SiOx, 0<x≤2) 및 이들의 합금으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있으며, 이때 상기 실리콘 산화물 입자(SiOx, 0<x<2)는 결정형 SiO2 및 비정형 Si로 구성된 복합물일 수 있다.
상기 실리콘계 입자는 하나의 덩어리로 이루어진 실리콘계 입자일 수 있고, 다르게는 작은 입경을 가지는 실리콘계 1차 입자가 뭉쳐서 형성된 실리콘 2차 입자일 수 있으며, 또는 이들 모두를 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
상기 실리콘계 입자의 평균 입경(D50)은 0.05 nm 내지 30 ㎛, 구체적으로는 0.5 nm 내지 15 ㎛일 수 있으며, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부를 기준으로 30 중량부 내지 99 중량부, 구체적으로는 70 중량부 내지 99 중량부일 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층은 상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 형성되어 있으며, 구체적으로 상기 실리콘계 입자의 외부 표면에 형성되어 있을 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층은 상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 형성되어 상기 실리콘계 입자의 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리에 의해 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피가 변화할 경우, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 미분화(pulverization)를 방지 내지 완화할 수 있으며, 또한 상기 실리콘계 입자와 전해질의 부반응을 효과적으로 방지 내지 완화할 수 있다. 또한, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체가 우수한 전도도를 가질 수 있도록 하여 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 리튬 이차 전지용 음극 활물질에 포함할 때 리튬과 용이하게 반응이 이루어지도록 할 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층은 비정질 탄소, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 활성탄, MCMB(MesoCarbon MicroBead), 탄소 섬유(carbon fiber), 및 석탄 타르 피치(coal tar pitch), 석유계 피치(petroleum pitch) 및 유기 재료(organic material)를 원료로 열처리하여 만든 탄소계 물질로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있고, 구체적으로는 비정질 탄소, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연 및 활성탄으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층의 두께는 50 nm 내지 500 nm일 수 있고, 구체적으로는 70 nm 내지 300 nm, 더욱 구체적으로는 100 nm 내지 200 nm일 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층의 두께가 50 nm 이상이면, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화에 대응하여 상기 실리콘계 입자의 미분화(pulverization)를 적절히 방지 내지 완화할 수 있으면서도, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 전해액과의 부반응을 방지할 수 있고, 상기 탄소 코팅층의 두께가 500 nm 이하이면, 상기 탄소 코팅층의 두께가 지나치게 두꺼워져 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리가 방해 받는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층은 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부를 기준으로 0.005 중량부 내지 30 중량부일 수 있고, 구체적으로는 0.05 중량부 내지 25 중량부, 더욱 구체적으로는 1 중량부 내지 10 중량부일 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층의 함량은 탄소 코팅층의 두께와 관련이 있으며, 따라서 상기 탄소 코팅층의 함량이 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부를 기준으로 0.005 중량부 이상이면, 적절히 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화에 대응하여 상기 실리콘계 입자의 미분화(pulverization)를 방지 내지 완화할 수 있으면서도, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 전해액과의 부반응을 방지할 수 있고, 상기 탄소 코팅층의 함량이 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부를 기준으로 30 중량부 이하이면, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 중 탄소 코팅층의 비율이 지나치게 많아져 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리가 방해 받는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 형성되어 있으며, 구체적으로 상기 탄소 코팅층의 상기 실리콘계 입자와 접하는 면의 타면, 즉 외부 표면에 형성되어 있을 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 형성되어 상기 실리콘계 입자와 상기 탄소 코팅층이 물리적인 결합을 유지하도록 도와, 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리에 의해 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피가 변화할 경우 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화에 따라 유발되는 탄소 코팅층의 탈리를 억제하며, 또한 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화를 수용할 수 있으므로, 실리콘계 입자의 부피 팽창에 따른 문제점을 효과적으로 억제할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 고분자를 포함하고, 상기 고분자 코팅층이 포함하는 고분자는 높은 전기 전도도를 제공할 수 있는 고분자라면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예컨대 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리아크릴산, 폴리비닐알코올, 폴리에틸렌이민, 폴리아세틸렌, 폴리파라페닐렌, 폴리피롤, 및 폴리아닐린으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상일 수 있고, 적절한 용매와 조합하여 사용될 수 있으며, 구체적으로 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리아크릴산, 폴리비닐알코올, 및 폴리에틸렌이민으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상일 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 단층막, 또는 2층 이상의 코팅막이 적층되어 있는 다중막일 수 있으며, 구체적으로는 2층 이상의 코팅막이 적층되어 있는 다중막일 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층이 다중막인 경우, 상기 다중막을 구성하는 2층 이상의 코팅막은 각각의 층이 모두 같은 종류의 고분자를 포함할 수 있고, 각각 다른 종류의 고분자를 포함할 수도 있으며, 이때 2층 이상의 코팅막은 각각의 층이 그 두께가 모두 같을 수 있고, 각각의 층이 그 두께가 모두 차이가 있을 수도 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 일례에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체에 있어서, 상기 다중막을 구성하는 각각의 층(코팅막)은 각기 다른 성분(고분자)을 포함할 수 있고, 그 두께도 각각 다를 수 있다.
상기 다중막을 구성하는 각각의 층(코팅막)이 각기 다른 성분(고분자)을 포함할 수 있으므로, 종류가 다른 고분자를 적절히 각각의 코팅막으로서 배치하여 고분자의 조합을 통해 제조되는 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체가 목적하는 물성을 발휘할 수 있도록 할 수 있고, 또한 각각의 코팅막의 두께를 조절하여 각각의 고분자를 통해 얻을 수 있는 물성의 정도를 조합할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층의 두께는 20 nm 내지 200 nm일 수 있고, 구체적으로는 30 nm 내지 150 nm, 더욱 구체적으로는 35 nm 내지 100 nm일 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층의 두께가 20 nm 이상인 경우, 적절히 상기 실리콘계 입자와 상기 탄소 코팅층이 물리적인 결합을 유지하도록 작용할 수 있으면서도, 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리에 의한 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화를 적절히 수용할 수 있고, 상기 고분자 코팅층의 두께가 200 nm 이하인 경우, 고분자 코팅층의 두께가 지나치게 두꺼워짐에 따라 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리가 방해받게 되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부를 기준으로 0.005 중량부 내지 40 중량부, 구체적으로는 0.5 중량부 내지 20 중량부일 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층 및 고분자 코팅층의 두께비는 1:1 내지 10:1일 수 있고, 구체적으로는 2:1 내지 3:1일 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층 및 고분자 코팅층의 두께비가 1:1 내지 10:1일 경우, 상기 적절한 비율의 탄소 코팅층의 존재에 의해, 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리에 따른 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화에 수반한, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 미분화(pulverization) 및 상기 실리콘계 입자와 전해질의 부반응 등을 효과적으로 방지 내지 완화할 수 있으며, 또한 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체가 우수한 전도도를 가질 수 있으면서도, 상기 고분자 코팅층에 의해 상기 실리콘계 입자와 상기 탄소 코팅층이 물리적인 결합이 유지될 수 있고, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 변화를 적절히 수용할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 리튬의 삽입 및 탈리가 원활하도록 공극을 포함하는 것일 수 있으며, 상기 공극은 표면에서 측정시 0.5 nm 내지 10 nm, 구체적으로는 1 nm 내지 6 nm의 직경(평균 기공 크기)을 가질 수 있다.
상기 공극의 평균 크기가 0.5 nm 이상일 경우, 상기 공극을 통해 전해액이 적절히 침투될 수 있으면서도, 상기 실리콘계 입자의 부피 팽창을 완화하기 위한 적절한 공간을 확보할 수 있으며, 상기 공극의 평균 크기가 10 nm 이하일 경우, 상기 탄소 코팅층이 상기 실리콘계 입자로부터 탈리되지 않도록 적절히 물리적인 결합을 유지할 수 있게 할 수 있다.
상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 0.05 ㎛ 내지 40 ㎛의 평균 입경(D50)을 가질 수 있고, 구체적으로는 0.05 ㎛ 내지 20 ㎛, 더욱 구체적으로는 1 ㎛ 내지 10 ㎛의 평균 입경을 가질 수 있다.
상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 평균 입경이 0.05 ㎛ 이상일 경우, 전극의 밀도가 낮아지는 것을 방지하여 적절한 부피당 용량을 가질 수 있고, 또한 평균 입경이 40 ㎛ 이하일 경우, 전극을 형성하기 위한 슬러리를 균일한 두께로 적절히 코팅할 수 있다.
본 발명에 있어서, 상기 실리콘계 입자 및 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 평균 입경(D50)은 입경 분포의 50% 기준에서의 입경으로 정의할 수 있다. 상기 평균 입경은 특별히 제한되지 않지만, 예컨대 레이저 회절법(laser diffraction method) 또는 주사전자현미경(SEM) 사진을 이용하여 측정할 수 있다. 상기 레이저 회절법은 일반적으로 서브미크론(submicron) 영역에서부터 수 mm 정도의 입경의 측정이 가능하며, 고 재현성 및 고 분해성을 가지는 결과를 얻을 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법을 제공한다.
본 발명의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 (1) 실리콘계 입자 상에 탄소 코팅층을 형성하는 단계; 및 (2) 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법에 의해 제조될 수 있다.
상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 탄소 코팅층을 형성하는 단계는 상기 실리콘계 입자 상에서 탄소를 성장시킴으로써 복합체를 형성하여 이루어질 수 있고, 예컨대 상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 비정질 탄소, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 활성탄, MCMB(MesoCarbon MicroBead), 탄소 섬유(Carbon fiber), 및 석탄 타르 피치(coal tar pitch), 석유계 피치(petroleum pitch) 및 유기 재료(organic material)를 원료로 열처리하여 만든 탄소계 물질로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을, 화학 기상 증착법(CVD), 피치(pitch)를 이용한 코팅법, 용매 증발법, 공침법, 침전법, 졸겔법 또는 스퍼터링법을 이용하여 코팅함으로써 형성될 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계는, 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 상기 고분자 코팅층을 이루는 물질을 코팅하여 이루어질 수 있고, 예컨대 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리아크릴산, 폴리비닐알코올, 및 폴리에틸렌이민으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을, 화학 기상 증착법(CVD), 용매 증발법, 공침법, 침전법, 졸겔법 또는 스퍼터링법을 이용하여 코팅함으로써 형성될 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층은 단층막, 또는 2층 이상의 코팅막이 적층되어 있는 다중막일 수 있으며, 이를 위해 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법은 추가로 (3) 상기 고분자 코팅층 상에 추가 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층 상에 추가 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계는 목적하는 고분자 코팅층의 적층 수에 따라 적적히 반복될 수 있다.
상기 고분자 코팅층이 2층 이상의 다중막으로 이루어지는 경우, 상기 다중막을 구성하는 2층 이상의 코팅막은 모두 같은 종류의 고분자를 포함할 수 있고, 각각의 층이 다른 종류의 고분자를 포함할 수도 있으며, 이때 2층 이상의 코팅막은 각각의 층이 그 두께가 모두 같을 수 있고, 각각의 층이 그 두께가 모두 차이가 있을 수도 있다. 따라서, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법에 있어서, 상기 (2) 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계 및 상기 (3) 상기 고분자 코팅층 상에 추가 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계에서 적절히 고분자의 종류를 정하고, 코팅의 정도를 조절함으로써, 상기 다중막을 구성하는 각각의 층(코팅막)을 구성하는 성분 및 그 두께를 조절할 수 있다.
상기 단계 (2), 또는 단계 (2) 및 (3)을 통하여, 제조되는 상기 고분자 코팅층의 두께를 20 nm 내지 200 nm, 구체적으로는 30 nm 내지 150 nm, 더욱 구체적으로는 35 nm 내지 100 nm가 되도록 조절할 수 있다.
이때, 상기 탄소 코팅층 및 고분자 코팅층의 두께비가 1:1 내지 10:1, 구체적으로는 2:1 내지 3:1가 되도록 조절할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일례에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 그 자체로 음극 활물질로서 사용될 수 있고, 탄소 및/또는 리튬과 합금화가 가능한 물질과 혼합되어 음극 활물질로서 사용될 수도 있다. 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체는 리튬 이온의 삽입에 따른 부피 팽창이 감소되어 높은 수명 특성을 발휘할 수 있으므로, 이차전지의 음극 활물질의 제조에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
상기 리튬과 합금화가 가능한 물질로서는 Si, SiOx, Sn, SnOx, Ge, GeOx, Pb, PbOx, Ag, Mg, Zn, ZnOx, Ga, In, Sb 및 Bi로 이루어지는 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 들 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명은 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질, 및 상기 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극을 제공하며, 상기 음극을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지를 제공한다. 상기 리튬 이차전지는 양극, 음극, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 세퍼레이터를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 음극은 당 분야에 알려져 있는 통상적인 방법으로 제조될 수 있으며, 예컨대 상기 음극 활물질 및 바인더 및 도전재 등의 첨가제들을 혼합 및 교반하여 음극 활물질 슬러리를 제조한 후, 이를 음극 집전체에 도포하고 건조한 후 압축하여 제조할 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 음극 활물질 입자들을 결착시켜 성형체를 유지하기 위하여 사용될 수 있으며, 음극 활물질용 슬러리 제조 시 사용되는 통상적인 바인더라면 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 예컨대 비수계 바인더인 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복시메틸셀룰로즈, 히드록시프로필렌셀룰로즈, 디아세틸렌셀룰로즈, 폴리비닐클로라이드, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드(PVdF), 폴리에틸렌 또는 폴리프로필렌 등을 사용할 수 있고, 또한 수계 바인더인 아크릴로나이트릴-부타디엔고무, 스티렌-부타디엔 고무 및 아크릴 고무로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나 또는 이들 중 2종 이상의 혼합물을 사용할 수 있다. 수계 바인더는 비수계 바인더에 비해 경제적, 친환경적이고, 작업자의 건강에도 무해하며, 비수계 바인더에 비하여 결착 효과가 우수하므로, 동일 체적당 활물질의 비율을 높일 수 있어 고용량화가 가능하며, 수계 바인더로는 구체적으로 스티렌-부타디엔 고무가 사용될 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 음극 활물질용 슬러리 전체 중량 중에 10 중량% 이하로 포함될 수 있으며, 구체적으로 0.1 중량% 내지 10 중량%로 포함될 수 있다. 상기 바인더의 함량이 0.1 중량% 미만이면 바인더 사용에 따른 효과가 미미하여 바람직하지 않고, 10 중량%를 초과하면 바인더 함량 증가에 따른 활물질의 상대적인 함량 감소로 인해 체적당 용량이 저하될 우려가 있어 바람직하지 않다.
상기 도전재는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 상기 도전재의 예로서는 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서머 블랙 등의 카본블랙; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본, 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스커; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 또는 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등을 들 수 있다. 상기 도전재는 음극 활물질용 슬러리 전체 중량에 대해 1 중량% 내지 9 중량%의 양으로 사용될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 상기 음극에 사용되는 음극 집전체는 3 ㎛ 내지 500 ㎛의 두께를 갖는 것일 수 있다. 상기 음극 집전체는, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예컨대 구리, 금, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 구리나 스테인리스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면처리한 것, 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또한, 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 음극 활물질의 결합력을 강화시킬 수도 있으며, 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 사용될 수 있다.
상기 양극은 당 분야에 알려져 있는 통상적인 방법으로 제조할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 양극 활물질에 용매, 필요에 따라 바인더, 도전재, 분산제를 혼합 및 교반하여 슬러리를 제조한 후 이를 금속 재료의 집전체에 도포(코팅)하고 압축한 뒤 건조하여 양극을 제조할 수 있다.
상기 금속 재료의 집전체는 전도성이 높은 금속으로, 상기 양극 활물질의 슬러리가 용이하게 접착할 수 있는 금속으로 전지의 전압 범위에서 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예컨대 스테인레스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 또는 알루미늄이나 스테리인레스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면 처리한 것 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또한, 집전체 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 양극 활물질의 접착력을 높일 수도 있다. 집전체는 필름, 시트, 호일, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태로 사용 가능하며, 3 ㎛ 내지 500 ㎛의 두께를 갖는 것일 수 있다.
상기 양극 활물질은, 예컨대 리튬 코발트 산화물(LiCoO2), 리튬 니켈 산화물(LiNiO2), Li[NixCoyMnzMv]O2(상기 식에서, M은 Al, Ga 및 In으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나 또는 이들 중 2종 이상의 원소이고; 0.3≤x<1.0, 0≤y, z≤0.5, 0≤v≤0.1, x+y+z+v=1이다), Li(LiaMb-a-b'M'b')O2

상기 양극을 형성하기 위한 용매로는 NMP(N-메틸 피롤리돈), DMF(디메틸 포름아미드), 아세톤, 디메틸 아세트아미드 등의 유기 용매 또는 물 등이 있으며, 이들 용매는 단독으로 또는 2종 이상을 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다. 용매의 사용량은 슬러리의 도포 두께, 제조 수율을 고려하여 상기 양극 활물질, 바인더, 도전재를 용해 및 분산시킬 수 있는 정도이면 충분하다.
상기 바인더로는 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌 코폴리머(PVDF-co-HFP), 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드(polyvinylidenefluoride), 폴리아크릴로니트릴(polyacrylonitrile), 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트(polymethylmethacrylate), 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복시메틸셀룰로오스(CMC), 전분, 히드록시프로필셀룰로오스, 재생 셀룰로오스, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리아크릴산, 에틸렌-프로필렌-디엔 모노머(EPDM), 술폰화 EPDM, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무(SBR), 불소 고무, 폴리 아크릴산(poly acrylic acid) 및 이들의 수소를 Li, Na 또는 Ca 등으로 치환된 고분자, 또는 다양한 공중합체 등의 다양한 종류의 바인더 고분자가 사용될 수 있다.
상기 도전재는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예컨대 천연 흑연이나 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 파네스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서멀 블랙 등의 카본블랙; 탄소 섬유나 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 탄소 나노 튜브 등의 도전성 튜브; 플루오로카본, 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말; 산화아연, 티탄산 칼륨 등의 도전성 위스커; 산화 티탄 등의 도전성 금속 산화물; 폴리페닐렌 유도체 등의 도전성 소재 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 도전재는 양극 슬러리 전체 중량에 대해 1 중량% 내지 20 중량%의 양으로 사용될 수 있다.
상기 분산제는 수계 분산제 또는 N-메틸-2-피롤리돈 등의 유기 분산제를 사용할 수 있다.
또한, 세퍼레이터로는 종래에 세퍼레이터로 사용된 통상적인 다공성 고분자 필름, 예컨대 에틸렌 단독중합체, 프로필렌 단독중합체, 에틸렌-부텐 공중합체, 에틸렌-헥센 공중합체 및 에틸렌-메타크릴레이트 공중합체 등과 같은 폴리올레핀계 고분자로 제조한 다공성 고분자 필름을 단독으로 또는 이들을 적층하여 사용할 수 있으며, 다르게는 통상적인 다공성 부직포, 예컨대 고융점의 유리 섬유, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트 섬유 등으로 된 부직포를 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명에서 사용되는 전해질로서 포함될 수 있는 리튬염은 리튬 이차전지용 전해질에 통상적으로 사용되는 것들이 제한 없이 사용될 수 있으며, 예컨대 상기 리튬염의 음이온으로는 F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, NO3

본 발명에서 사용되는 전해질로는 리튬 이차전지 제조시 사용 가능한 유기계 액체 전해질, 무기계 액체 전해질, 고체 고분자 전해질, 겔형 고분자 전해질, 고체 무기 전해질, 용융형 무기 전해질 등을 들 수 있으며, 이들로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 발명의 리튬 이차전지의 외형은 특별한 제한이 없으나, 캔을 사용한 원통형, 각형, 파우치(pouch)형 또는 코인(coin)형 등이 될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 이차전지는 소형 디바이스의 전원으로 사용되는 전지셀에 사용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다수의 전지셀들을 포함하는 중대형 전지모듈에 단위전지로도 사용될 수 있다.
상기 중대형 디바이스의 바람직한 예로는 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차 및 전력 저장용 시스템 등을 들 수 있지만, 이들 만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
실시예
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예 및 실험예를 들어 더욱 상세하게 설명하나, 본 발명이 이들 실시예 및 실험예에 의해 제한되는 것은 아니다. 본 발명에 따른 실시예는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예는 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.
실시예 1 : 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조
평균 입경이 5 ㎛ 정도인 실리콘 산화물 입자를 thermal CVD 챔버에 넣고, 에틸렌 가스와 아르곤의 혼합 가스를 공급하고 800℃로 가열하여, 상기 실리콘 산화물 입자 상에 2 내지 3 nm 두께의 탄소 코팅층을 형성하였다.
상기 탄소 코팅층이 형성된 실리콘 산화물 100 g을 2% 폴리아크릴로니트릴(PAN) 400 g 과 도전제로서의 카본 블랙 100 g이 포함된 N-메틸-2-피롤리돈(NMP)에 침지시켜 교반기를 이용하여 충분히 교반하였다. 상기에서 제조된 탄소 코팅층이 형성된 실리콘 산화물과 PAN 고분자 용액을 2 L의 둥근 플라스크에 담고 회전 가열기를 사용하여 NMP를 제거하여 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 제조하였다. 용매가 제거된 복합체는 130℃에서 8시간 건조시킨 후 유발로 분쇄하였다.
실시예 2 : 음극 및 리튬 이차 전지의 제조

실시예 1에서 제조된 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 음극 활물질로 사용하고, 도전재로 아세틸렌 블랙, 바인더로 폴리아크릴레이크(PAA)를 사용하여 이들을 60:20:20의 중량비로 혼합한 다음, 용매인 물(H2O)과 함께 혼합하여 균일한 음극 활물질 슬러리를 제조하였다.
상기 제조된 음극 활물질 슬러리를 구리 집전체의 일면에 65 ㎛의 두께로 코팅하고, 건조 및 압연한 후 일정크기로 펀칭하여 음극을 제조하였다.
<리튬 이차 전지의 제조(코인형 반쪽전지)>
상대(counter) 전극으로 Li 금속을 사용하였고, 상기 음극과 Li 금속 사이에 폴리올레핀 세퍼레이터를 개재시킨 후, 에틸렌 카보네이트(EC) 및 디에틸 카보네이트(DEC)를 30:70의 부피비로 혼합한 용매에 1M LiPF6가 용해된 전해질을 주입하여 코인형 반쪽전지를 제조하였다.
비교예 1 : 실리콘 산화물-탄소 복합체의 제조
상기 실시예 1에서 고분자 코팅층 형성 과정을 실시하지 않은 것을 제외하고는, 실시예 1과 마찬가지의 방법을 통하여 고분자 코팅층이 형성되어 있지 않은 실리콘 산화물-탄소 복합체를 제조하였다.
비교예 2 : 음극 및 리튬 이차 전지의 제조
음극 활물질로서 비교예 1의 실리콘 산화물-탄소 복합체를 사용한 것을 제외하고는, 실시예 2와 마찬가지의 방법으로 코인형 반쪽전지를 제조하였다.
실험예 1 : SEM 현미경 사진
주사전자현미경(SEM)을 이용하여, 상기 실시예 1에서 제조된 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체에 대한 사진을 촬영하여 그 결과를 도 1에 나타내었다.
도 1에는 실시예 1에서 제조된 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 5 ㎛ 스케일의 이미지가 나타나 있다. 상기 이미지를 통하여 입자 상의 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체가 형성되었음을 확인할 수 있으며, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 표면에 폴리머와 함께 도전성을 부여하기 위하여 함께 코팅한 도전재 입자들이 고르게 분포되어 있는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
실험예 2 : TG-DTA 분석
TG-DTA 분석을 통하여 상기 실시예 1에서 제조된 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 및 비교예 1에서 제조된 실리콘 산화물-탄소 복합체에 대한 성분을 분석하여 그 결과를 도 2에 나타내었다.
도 2를 참조하면, 탄소 코팅층만 포함한 SiO의 경우 580℃ 근처에서의 무게 감소만 나타나지만, 고분자 코팅층을 함께 포함한 경우 450 내지 500℃ 근처에서 고분자 성분이 검출됨을 확인할 수 있다.
실험예 3 : 사이클 특성 평가
실시예 2 및 비교예 2에서 각각 제조한 리튬 이차 전지에 대하여 사이클 수에 따른 상대 효율을 알아보기 위해 다음과 같이 전기화학 평가 실험을 수행하였다.
도 3은 실시예 2 및 비교예 2의 리튬 이차전지의 수명 특성 그래프를 나타낸 것으로, 도 3을 통하여 확인할 수 있는 바와 같이, 실시예 2의 리튬 이차전지의 경우 1 내지 50 회의 사이클까지의 상대 용량에 대한 기울기가 비교예 2의 리튬 이차전지에 비해 완만함을 확인할 수 있었다.
즉, 실시예 1에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 포함하는 실시예 2의 리튬 이차전지는, 비교예 1에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 교예 2의 리튬 이차전지보다 수명 특성이 우수함을 확인할 수 있었다.
실험예 4 : 전기화학적 반응에 따른 전극의 부피 팽창률 특성
도 4는 실시예 2 및 비교에 2에서 제조된 리튬 이차 전지에 대하여 전기화학적 특성을 평가한 후 전극의 부피 변화율을 측정한 그래프로, 구체적으로 충방전율 2 mAh에서 50 사이클 후, 코인형 셀 내부에 있는 전극의 두께 변화를 측정하여 나타낸 것이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 실온(RT)에서 SiO에 탄소코팅만을 실시한 비교예 1에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소 복합체를 포함하는 비교에 2는 41.8%의 부피 팽창율을 나타내지만, 추가적인 고분자 코팅을 실시한 실시예 1에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 포함하는 실시예 2는 40.2%의 부피 팽창율을 나타내었다. 또한, 고온(45℃)에서의 부피 팽창율은 비교예 2의 경우 41.3%인데 비해 실시예 2는 37.3%를 나타내어 부피 팽창율이 상대적으로 감소하여, 그 경향이 고온에서 더욱 크게 나타남을 확인할 수 있었다.
Claims (22)
- 실리콘계 입자;상기 실리콘계 입자 상에 형성되어 있는 탄소 코팅층; 및상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 형성되어 있는 고분자 코팅층을 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 실리콘계 입자는 Si, 실리콘 산화물 입자(SiOx, 0<x≤2), Si-금속합금, 및 Si와 실리콘 산화물 입자(SiOx, 0<x≤2)의 합금으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 실리콘계 입자의 평균 입경(D50)은 0.05 nm 내지 30 ㎛이고,상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 평균 입경(D50)은 0.05 ㎛ 내지 40 ㎛인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 실리콘계 입자는 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부에 대하여 30 내지 99 중량부인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 탄소 코팅층은 비정질 탄소, 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 활성탄, MCMB(MesoCarbon MicroBead), 탄소 섬유(Carbon fiber), 및 석탄 타르 피치(coal tar pitch), 석유계 피치(petroleum pitch) 및 유기 재료(organic material)를 원료로 열처리하여 만든 탄소계 물질로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 탄소 코팅층의 두께는 50 nm 내지 500 nm인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 탄소 코팅층은 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부에 대하여 1 내지 30 중량부인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 고분자 코팅층은 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리아크릴산, 폴리비닐알코올, 폴리에틸렌이민, 폴리아세틸렌, 폴리파라페닐렌, 폴리피롤, 및 폴리아닐린으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 고분자 코팅층은 2층 이상의 코팅막이 적층되어 있는 다중막인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 9 항에 있어서,상기 2층 이상의 코팅막은 각각의 층이 다른 종류의 고분자를 포함하는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 9 항에 있어서,상기 2층 이상의 코팅막은 각각의 층이 두께가 차이가 있는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 고분자 코팅층의 두께는 20 nm 내지 200 nm인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 고분자 코팅층은 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체 100 중량부를 기준으로 0.005 중량부 내지 40 중량부인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 탄소 코팅층 및 고분자 코팅층의 두께비는 1:1 내지 10:1인, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 고분자 코팅층은 공극을 포함하고,상기 공극은 0.5 내지 10 nm의 직경을 가지는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체.
- 제 1 항 내지 제 15 항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체를 포함하는 음극 활물질.
- 제 16 항에 따른 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극.
- 제 17 항에 따른 음극을 포함하는 리튬 이차전지.
- (1) 실리콘계 입자 상에 탄소 코팅층을 형성하는 단계; 및(2) 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법.
- 제 19 항에 있어서,상기 탄소 코팅층을 형성하는 단계는 화학 기상 증착법(CVD), 피치(pitch)를 이용한 코팅법, 용매 증발법, 공침법, 침전법, 졸겔법 또는 스퍼터링법을 이용하여 이루어지는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법.
- 제 19 항에 있어서,상기 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계는 화학 기상 증착법(CVD), 용매 증발법, 공침법, 침전법, 졸겔법 또는 스퍼터링법을 이용하여 이루어지는, 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법.
- 제 19 항에 있어서,상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법이 추가로 (3) 상기 고분자 코팅층 상에 추가 고분자 코팅층을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는, 상기 실리콘 산화물-탄소-고분자 복합체의 제조방법.
