- FIG. 3 is an example in which the relationship between the actual distance to the gaze target and the relative visual acuity (relative value of the target visibility) when the target is viewed with the naked eye is graphed.
- a relative visual acuity characteristic diagram In both graphs, the horizontal axis represents the actual distance to the gaze target, and the vertical axis represents an object 1 meter away from a person with normal vision.
- the relative visual acuity value when the visual acuity when viewed is 1.0 is taken.
- the relative visual acuity characteristic diagram is substantially inversely proportional to the actual distance as indicated by a broken line 100 in each figure.
- a solid line 101 in FIG. 3A shows an example of a relative visual acuity characteristic diagram of a myopic person.
- a person with myopia has a small difference from healthy relative visual acuity when the distance between objects is relatively short, but the relative visual acuity tends to decrease rapidly as the distance increases. Therefore, when the user has such a myopic visual acuity characteristic, for example, the actual distance of the object at the point P that can secure a relative visual acuity equivalent to 1.0 for a normal visual acuity characteristic (see FIG. 3A).
- 0.8 m may be set as the appropriate visual distance c of the virtual image described above.
- a person with hyperopia has a relative visual acuity that is equal to or greater than that of normal relative vision at relatively long distances, but the relative visual acuity at short distance is significantly lower than that of normal relative vision. Tend to. Therefore, even when the user has such a farsighted visual acuity, the object distance (relatively far) that can ensure a relative visual acuity substantially equivalent to that of a normal visual acuity is regarded as the appropriate virtual image viewing distance c. That's fine.
- the solid line in FIG. 3B shows an example of a relative visual acuity characteristic diagram of a presbyopic person.
- the short distance and the long distance tend to be lower than the normal visual acuity, and the point Q at which the relative visual acuity is the best near the middle distance (0.8 m to 1.0 m in the example of FIG. 3B).
- the actual object distance of the Q point may be set as the appropriate visual distance c of the virtual image.
- the determination method of the appropriate visual distance c of the virtual image described above is only an example, and the present embodiment is not limited to the above determination method.
- Human relative visual acuity characteristics vary greatly and vary due to various factors such as individual differences, age differences, and the influence of the surrounding environment.
- the proper visual distance c of the virtual image in the present embodiment may be determined arbitrarily according to the visual ability of each user.
- the user's eyesight can be corrected so that an arbitrary viewing distance is set to an appropriate viewing distance by mounting a predetermined visual auxiliary spectacle lens between the display screen 2 and the eyeball of the user 20. I do not care.
- the user can utilize the HMD as a highly functional visual assistance system that can visually recognize an external scene and a visual target object regardless of the difference or variation in visual recognition ability.
- the captured external scene image is projected as faithfully as possible while maintaining a good visual state and reproducing the perspective as if the user visually observes the external scene.
- a new virtual image display method or device that dispels discomfort and discomfort from the user. Specific examples thereof will be described below.
- FIG. 4 is a block diagram of the HMD applied visual assistance system of this embodiment. The function of each part of this block diagram will be described below.
- the external scene video information captured by the external scene capturing electronic camera 3 is sent to the in-view object distance detector 10 and the perspective image generator 11.
- the in-view object distance detector 10 has a function of detecting the actual distance (actual distance from the user to the object) of each object captured in the captured external scene image.
- the distance information is detected using a captured image or the distance measuring function provided in the electronic camera 3 itself.
- a dedicated distance measuring sensor or distance measuring device other than the electronic camera 3 may be used.
- the in-view object distance detector 10 is naturally configured to receive an information signal from the distance measuring sensor or the distance measuring device.
- photographed with the electronic camera 3 is stored in the memory 12 in the form which attached the distance information of each target object detected with the in-view target distance detector 10 as needed.
- the perspective image generator 11 is a core part of the visual assistance system of the present embodiment, and the distance between each external object image information captured by the electronic camera 3 and each object detected by the in-field object distance detector 10. Using the information and, if necessary, the predetermined video information extracted from the memory 12, etc., there is a perspective that is projected and displayed independently on the video display screen 2 arranged in front of the left and right eyes of the HMD user 20 It has a function to generate a virtual image. The details of the perspective imparting function in the perspective image generator 11 will be described later in detail.
- the display video generated by the perspective video generator 11 is sent to the video display controller 13.
- the video display controller 13 controls a virtual image projector provided in the HMD 1 in order to properly project a virtual image on the projection screen 2 in the HMD 1 with the display video sent from the perspective video generator 11. It has a function.
- the video display controller 13 may have a function of controlling a virtual image generation optical system provided in the virtual image projection apparatus so that the visual distance of the virtual image can be changed and adjusted to a predetermined distance. .
- Each of the electronic camera 3 for photographing an external scene, the object distance detector 10 in the visual field, the perspective image generator 11, the memory 12, and the image display controller 13 described above is controlled by the controller 14 and functions thereof. Operation is properly controlled.
- the perspective image generator 11 is the core of the present embodiment in each block in FIG. 4.
- predetermined virtual images are projected and displayed on the left and right image display screens 2 respectively.
- the virtual image image in which a predetermined perspective is felt when viewed from the user 20 is generated.
- specific examples of the perspective generation will be described.
- the binocular parallax in (1) refers to causing a difference in the in-plane direction at the position of the image (virtual image) that can be seen by the left and right eyes according to the distance from the observer to the object.
- An example is shown in FIG.
- Let d be the actual distance from the user 20 wearing the HMD 1 to the gaze real object 50 in front of the user, and the virtual image of the object 50 projected on the left and right projection screens 2 by the HMD 1.
- the viewing distance of 51 and 52 is set to c.
- W be the distance between both eyes of the user.
- the real object 50 and the left and right eyes of the user are connected to each other.
- the virtual images 51 and 52 of the real object 50 viewed with the left and right eyes must be projected at the intersection position between the straight line (broken line in the figure) and the virtual image viewing surface separated by the viewing distance c.
- the virtual image 51 of the real object 50 in the left eye is projected to a position that is shifted to the right by ⁇ x from the virtual image center
- the virtual image 52 in the right eye is projected to a position that is shifted to the left by ⁇ x from the virtual image center. It must be.
- the relative displacement ⁇ x between the left and right virtual images is generally expressed by the following equation using the real distance d, the virtual image viewing distance c, and the distance W between the observer's eyes.
- ⁇ x (W / 2) ⁇ (1-c / d) (1)
- the relative deviation amount ⁇ x is a predetermined plane on the virtual image projected on the left and right eyes, which is approximately inversely proportional to the distance from the observer (HMD user in this embodiment) to the gaze target. Giving an inward displacement (parallax) can help the observer feel a sense of perspective.
- the blurring of the virtual image according to the distance of (2) means that the human visual ability is almost inversely proportional to the distance to the target object, as described above. This is to give a predetermined “blur” to the virtual image according to the actual distance of the target object.
- FIG. This figure shows the relative visual acuity characteristics of a person as in FIG. 3, and the horizontal and vertical axes in the figure are the same as in FIG.
- relative visual acuity with respect to a real image obtained by directly macroscopically viewing an object decreases as substantially inversely proportional to the actual distance of the object, as indicated by a broken line 100 in the figure.
- the visual acuity of the target image is constant regardless of the distance of the target object, so the relative visual acuity of the target object relative to the virtual image image is as shown by a solid line 200 in the figure.
- the target object becomes a constant value regardless of the actual distance. This is a major factor in inhibiting the sense of perspective of virtual images.
- the relative distance at the actual distance of the gazing object corresponds to the actual distance of the object.
- the amount of “blur” may be adjusted appropriately.
- the object in the center of the imaging field of view substantially matched to the user's naked eye field may be identified as the user's gaze object, or used as described later.
- a person's gaze direction may be detected and an object in the gaze direction may be specified as a gaze object.
- Binocular vergence is a movement that causes the eyes of both eyes to turn inside each other (additional movement) in order to focus both eyes on the object, especially when directly viewing an object at a short distance. I mean. Even when the brain detects the inversion motion of the eyeball, the person detects the perspective of the object to some extent. This congestion occurs remarkably when the object is at a very short distance of about several tens of centimeters. On the other hand, when a person sees a virtual image, the focus of the person's eyes is consistent with the viewing distance of the virtual image.
- the purpose of this embodiment is to eliminate such discomfort and discomfort of the observer (HMD user). Therefore, in this embodiment, a method for applying a predetermined correction to the actual distance of the object and the visually converted distance given to the virtual image of the object is proposed.
- FIG. 8 is a diagram showing an example. This figure is a graph plotting the relationship between the actual distance to the gaze target and the visual conversion distance given to each object image in the virtual image (hereinafter, this relationship is referred to as distance conversion characteristics) in this embodiment. is there.
- the object in the middle distance and long distance areas, along the straight line 110 indicating the original correct distance relationship, in the area closer to the predetermined point R (actual distance 1 m in the example in the figure), the object is reached.
- the proportional coefficient of the change amount of the visual distance given to the virtual image with respect to the real distance change amount is gradually increased from 1.0 in accordance with the decrease of the target real distance, for example, the solid line 210 in the figure.
- the function of calculating the converted distance with the distance conversion characteristic on the curve as shown in FIG. 3 is provided in the in-view object distance detector 10 or the perspective image generator 11.
- the perspective image generator 11 assigns the left-eye and right-eye virtual image images respectively projected on the left-eye and right-eye image display screens 2.
- the image blurring amount is calculated according to the binocular parallax amount and the distance, and the image processing is performed so as to add them. By performing such processing, the deviation from the convergence with the perspective given arbitrarily to the virtual image image is reduced, and the discomfort and discomfort given to the observer (HMD user) can be wiped off satisfactorily. it can.
- the distance conversion characteristic 210 shown in FIG. 8 is merely an example, and of course, the present embodiment is not limited to this.
