  • LEDs have the advantages of higher energy efficiency, longer life and high-speed response than conventional light sources, and are commercialized in general lighting beyond mobile phones and LCD backlights, leading the electronics industry today.
  • epoxy which has been lacking in heat resistance, is being replaced by a silicon material.
  • LEDs need a package to realize light emission, and there are mechanical protective housings, LED chips, phosphors, adhesives, encapsulants, and heat dissipating parts, and encapsulation materials enclose LED chips. Only about 15% of the chip generated light energy is output as light, and the rest is absorbed by the encapsulant or the like. In recent years, LEDs of high brightness and high output power operate at high temperature, and heat resistance of encapsulant is required. In addition, the encapsulant should have a high yellowing resistance due to high energy short wavelength light, and have a low moisture absorption and thermal expansion coefficient.
  • the refractive index of the encapsulant must be higher than the refractive index of the chip so that the LED light is totally reflected at the interface between the encapsulant and the chip in order to be extracted out of the chip.

  • Conventional epoxy resins with low heat resistance, yellowing due to short wavelengths and high hygroscopicity are used for low power, and are being replaced by silicon materials for higher power white light. Airtight sealing of ceramics or metals is good for pressure and moisture, but these materials are not suitable for mass production.
