Definitions
- the invention relates to a wet oil sump of an internal combustion engine.
- the invention also concerns an internal combustion engine.
- Four-stroke internal combustion engines are both lubricated and cooled by oil which is circulated throughout the engine feeding the various bearings and other moving parts of the engine; and thereafter allowed to drain to the wet oil sump at the base of the engine under gravity. From the wet oil sump oil is circulated back through the engine by an oil pump.
- This pump is often mounted internally to the engine and is typically driven by the crankshaft.
- the oil pump can be an external pump, for instance an electrical pump.
- the crankcase of the engine has an opening in the bottom to which the wet oil sump is attached.
- the oil In a dry sump system, the oil still falls to the base of the engine, but rather than being allowed to collect in a reservoir style oil sump it falls into a much shallower sump where it is removed by one or more externally mounted pumps and pumped into an external reservoir where it is both cooled and deaerated. Oil is then drawn from this reservoir by the pressure pump and circulated through the engine.
- the wet sump system offers the advantage of a simple design, using a single pump and no external oil reservoir. Since the oil sump is internal, there is no need for hoses or tubes connecting the engine to an external sump which may leak. An internal oil pump is generally more difficult to replace, but that is dependent on the engine design.
- wet oil sumps are limited by the fact that they can work only in limited inclined situations, since too high inclination angle can prevent suction pipe from sucking oil from the sump. This can lead to an engine seizure and other serious engine damages.
- the oil sump can be made deeper in order to guarantee that the oil suction pipe is below the oil level even in ex- treme inclined conditions, such as in oil rig installations. If the oil sump is made very deep, several structural problems may arise. For example, the natural frequencies of the oil sump decrease significantly due to the increased depth and big oil volume, resulting in a bigger sensibility to vibration load failures.
- the object of the invention is to provide a wet oil sump in which the above- mentioned problems can be avoided.
- the objects of the invention can be achieved by the oil sump according to claim 1 .
- the wet oil sump according to the invention comprises an oil reservoir for storing lubricating oil, and at least one partition wall for dividing the oil reservoir into reservoir compartments, which are in flow connection with each oth- er.
- the partition wall comprises a V-shaped bend.
- the shape of the partition walls makes the structure of the oil sump stiffer, which, in turn, increases the natural frequencies of the oil sump.
- the depth and oil volume of the oil sump reservoir can be increased without compromising the operational reliability of the engine.
- Fig. 1 shows a wet oil sump according to an embodiment of the invention.
- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the wet oil sump of fig. 1 .
- Fig. 3 shows a partition wall of the wet oil sump of figs. 1 and 2 viewed from above.
- Fig. 1 shows a wet oil sump 1 of an internal combustion engine such as a large diesel or otto engine, which can be used as a main and/or an auxiliary engine in ships and/or in power plants for generation of electricity and/or heat.
- the engine is a medium speed, four-stroke engine.
- the maximum rotational speed of the engine is 300-1500 rpm.
- Cylinders of the engine can be arranged in a single bank or in two banks in a V-configu ration.
- the engine has 4-20 cylinders.
- the cylinder bore is typically 10-100 cm.
- the wet oil sump 1 serves as a reservoir for storing lubricating oil and a collection reservoir for lubricating oil flowing back from the engine bearings and other components to be lubricated. Additionally, the wet oil sump 1 seals the engine crank case.
- the wet oil sump 1 can be attached to the engine block.
- the wet oil sump 1 comprises an oil reservoir 6 for storing lubricating oil.
- the wet oil sump 1 comprises two side walls 2 and two end walls 3 and a bottom plate 4, which form the oil reservoir 6.
- the wet oil sump 1 further comprises at least one partition wall 5 for dividing the oil reservoir 6 into compartments 7, which are in flow connection with each other.
- the wet oil sump 1 comprises 2-6 partition walls 5. One end of the partition wall 5 is attached to the side wall and the other end to the other side wall .
- the purpose of the partition wall(s) 5 is to slow down the movement of the lubricating oil in the oil reservoir 6.
- the partition wall 5 comprises a V-shaped bend 8.
- a tip 14 of the V-shaped bend 8 is arranged in the middle part of the partition wall 5.
- the V-shaped bend 8 extends from the bottom edge of the partition wall to its top edge.
- the V-shaped bend 8 has two sides 15 which are arranged at an angle (a) of 90- 150° with respect to each other.
- the partition wall 5 is also provided with two further V-shaped bends 9, which are arranged on both sides of the V-shaped bend 8. Sides 16 of the further V-shaped bends 9 are arranged at an angle ( ⁇ ) of 135-165° with respect to each other.
- the further V-shaped bends 9 are arranged at such an angle that the partition wall 5 between the side wall 2 and the further V-shaped bend 9, which is closest to said side wall, is perpendicular to the side wall 2.
- the V-shaped bend 8 and the further V-shaped bend 9 have a common side.
- the partition walls 5 comprise pipe openings 10 for receiving an oil suction pipe 12, through which oil can be supplied from the oil reservoir 6 to the engine bearings and other parts to be lubricated.
- the pipe opening 10 is arranged in the lower part of the partition wall 5.
- the partition walls 5 further comprise further openings 13 for forming a flow connection between the reservoir compartments 7.
- each partition wall 5 comprises two further openings 13.
- the further openings 13 are arranged on both sides of the V-shaped bend 9.
