Definitions

  • the invention relates to a wet oil sump of an internal combustion engine.
  • the invention also concerns an internal combustion engine.
  • Four-stroke internal combustion engines are both lubricated and cooled by oil which is circulated throughout the engine feeding the various bearings and other moving parts of the engine; and thereafter allowed to drain to the wet oil sump at the base of the engine under gravity. From the wet oil sump oil is circulated back through the engine by an oil pump.
  • This pump is often mounted internally to the engine and is typically driven by the crankshaft.
  • the oil pump can be an external pump, for instance an electrical pump.
  • the crankcase of the engine has an opening in the bottom to which the wet oil sump is attached.
  • the oil In a dry sump system, the oil still falls to the base of the engine, but rather than being allowed to collect in a reservoir style oil sump it falls into a much shallower sump where it is removed by one or more externally mounted pumps and pumped into an external reservoir where it is both cooled and deaerated. Oil is then drawn from this reservoir by the pressure pump and circulated through the engine.
  • the wet sump system offers the advantage of a simple design, using a single pump and no external oil reservoir. Since the oil sump is internal, there is no need for hoses or tubes connecting the engine to an external sump which may leak. An internal oil pump is generally more difficult to replace, but that is dependent on the engine design.
  • wet oil sumps are limited by the fact that they can work only in limited inclined situations, since too high inclination angle can prevent suction pipe from sucking oil from the sump. This can lead to an engine seizure and other serious engine damages.
  • the oil sump can be made deeper in order to guarantee that the oil suction pipe is below the oil level even in ex- treme inclined conditions, such as in oil rig installations. If the oil sump is made very deep, several structural problems may arise. For example, the natural frequencies of the oil sump decrease significantly due to the increased depth and big oil volume, resulting in a bigger sensibility to vibration load failures.
