Abstract

 本発明が解決しようとする課題は、高Tniと低粘度との両立することができる液晶組成物及びそれを用いた液晶表示素子を提供することにある。 第一成分として一般式(1)で表される化合物と、第二成分として下記一般式(2)で表される化合物の群から少なくとも一つと、を含有し、誘電率異方性が負であることを特徴とする液晶組成物を提供し、併せて該液晶組成物を用いた液晶表示素子を提供する。 本発明者は、上記課題を解決するために、鋭意研究を行った結果、一般式(1)および一般式(2)の液晶組成物を用いることにより、高Tniと低粘度との両立することができることを見出し、本発明を完成させた。

Description

液晶組成物およびそれを使用した液晶表示素子
 本発明は液晶組成物、さらに当該液晶組成物を使用した液晶表示素子に関する。
 液晶表示素子は、時計、電卓をはじめとして、各種測定機器、自動車用パネル、ワードプロセッサー、電子手帳、プリンター、コンピューター、テレビ、時計、広告表示板等に用いられるようになっている。また、当該液晶表示素子の構成は、対向する透明電極が形成された一対の基板間に液晶組成物を充填し、前記電極間に電圧をかけることで液晶の配向状態を変化させて通過する光の量を制御し、その通過する光の量の差により現れるパターンを表示するものである。液晶表示方式としては、その代表的なものにTN(ツイステッド・ネマチック)型、STN(スーパー・ツイステッド・ネマチック)型、TFT(薄膜トランジスタ)を用いたVA(以下、垂直配向とも称する)型やIPS(イン・プレーン・スイッチング)型等がある。これらの液晶表示素子に用いられる液晶組成物は水分、空気、熱、光などの外的要因に対して安定であること、また、室温を中心としてできるだけ広い温度範囲で液晶相を示し、低粘性であり、かつ駆動電圧が低いことが求められる。
 例えば、液晶TV等に広く用いられるVA型は、負のΔεを備えた液晶組成物を一般的には使用されており、PCモニター等に使用されているTN型やタッチパネル等に広く用いられているIPS型には主に正のΔεを備えた液晶組成物を一般的には使用されている。当然のことながら、これらIPSやVA型に限らず全ての駆動方式において低電圧駆動、高速応答、広い動作温度範囲を示す液晶組成物が求められている。このような要求に応えるために、大きい誘電率異方性差(Δε)と、大きい屈折率異方性差(Δn)と、小さい粘度(η)と、高いネマチック相-等方性液体相転移温度(Tni)と、を備えた液晶組成物が一般的に要求される。
 さらに、Δnとセルギャップ(d)との積であるΔn×dの設定から、液晶組成物のΔnをセルギャップに合わせて適当な範囲に調節する必要がある。加えて液晶表示素子をテレビ等へ応用する場合においては高速応答性が重視されるため、回転粘性係数(γ1)の小さい液晶組成物が要求される。
 そのため、液晶組成物に要求されるこれらの物性を満たす単独の化合物は存在しないため、個々の表示素子に対して誘電率異方性(Δε)や屈折率異方性(Δn)等の物性値を最適な値とするために、数種類から数十種類の化合物から構成されている。
 例えば、特許文献1の技術では、従来と比べ広い動作温度範囲、短い応答時間または低電圧駆動が優れると同時に、非常に大きい抵抗値を有する、ECB効果に基づくマトリックス液晶ディスプレイを提供できるとしている(特許文献1 段落「0013」参照)。具体的には、特許文献1には、末端にアルキル基またはアルケニル基を有するジフルオロフェニルシクロヘキサン骨格の化合物を必須成分とする液晶組成物が開示されている。
 また、同様の目的の他の技術としては、特許文献2が挙げられる。当該特許文献2には、式I~式IVに示す極性型の液晶化合物と、式V~式VIIIに示す非極性型の液晶化合物との組成物が開示されている。そして、この組成物により、利用可能なパラメーター範囲を著しく広げることが可能であるとしている(特許文献2 段落「0028」)。

 特許文献1および2はいずれも、シクロヘキサン環およびベンゼン環が2~3個連結した液晶化合物のみから構成された組成物であるため、確かに低粘度(η)を期待することができるが、そのような低粘度状態を維持したままTniが高い液晶組成物を得難いだけでなく、必要な原料化合物を多種類用いる必要があるいう問題点がある。そこで本発明に係る液晶組成物は、特定の化学構造を有する低粘度ビシクロヘキシルアルケニル化合物と特定の化学構造を有する高Tni直環4環化合物とを組み合わせることによりかかる問題を解決することを目的とする。
 本発明者は、上記課題を解決するために、鋭意研究を行った結果、一般式(1)および一般式(2)の液晶組成物を用いることにより、高Tniと低粘度との両立することができることを見出し、本発明を完成させた。

 本発明に係る液晶組成物は、高Tniと低粘度とを発揮することができる。

 低粘度特性は一般式(1)に示される2環の化合物が負担し、かつ高い転移温度(Tni)特性は一般式(2)で示される4環の化合物が負担することで互いの化学構造の相違点からそれぞれの効果を阻害することなく両者の効果を奏することができるため、他の同程度のTni、ΔnまたはΔε特性を備えた特許文献1や2の組成物と比較して、液晶組成物全体の粘度特性や転移温度に優れた組成物を提供できると考えられる。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)で表される第一成分および一般式(2)で表される第二成分を必須として含むものであり、必要に応じて、第三成分、第四成分ならびに重合性モノマーや添加剤などの他の成分からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種をさらに本発明に係る液晶組成物に含んでもよい。具体的には、本発明に係る液晶組成物は、一般式(1)および一般式(2)で表される化合物を必須の成分とするものであり、更に必要に応じて後述の一般式(3)~一般式(4)ならびに後述の一般式(V-A)および一般式(V-B)で表される化合物からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種を含有することができる。
 当該液晶組成物中に含有する一般式(1)、一般式(2)、一般式(3)~一般式(4)ならびに一般式(V-A)および一般式(V-B)で表される化合物の合計含有量は、下限値として60質量%が好ましく、65質量%が好ましく、70質量%が好ましく、75質量%が好ましく、80質量%が好ましく、85質量%が好ましく、90質量%が好ましく、92質量%が好ましく、95質量%が好ましく、98質量%が好ましく、99質量%が好ましく、上限値としては100質量%が好ましく、99.5質量%が好ましい。
 そのため、本発明に係る液晶組成物における添加剤(酸化防止剤、UV吸収剤など)は100ppm~1質量%であることが好ましい。また、本発明に係る液晶組成物における重合性モノマーは、500ppm~10質量%であることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物の誘電率異方性Δεの値は、25℃において、-2.0から-6.0であることが好ましく、-2.5から-5.0であることがより好ましく、-2.5から-4.0であることが特に好ましいが、更に詳述すると、応答速度を重視する場合には当該誘電率異方性Δεの値が-2.5~-3.4の範囲であると応答速度の観点で好ましいく、駆動電圧を重視する場合には-3.4~-4.0であることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物の屈折率異方性Δnの値は、25℃において、0.08から0.160であることが好ましいが、0.090から0.130であることがより好ましい。更に詳述すると、薄いセルギャップ(セルギャップ3.4μm以下)に対応する場合は0.100から0.130であることが好ましく、厚いセルギャップ(セルギャップ3.5μm以上)に対応する場合は0.080から0.100であることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物の回転粘度(γ)の上限値は、165(mPa・s)以下が好ましく、130(mPa・s)以下がより好ましく、120(mPa・s)以下が特に好ましい。一方、当該回転粘度(γ)の下限値は、20(mPa・s)以上が好ましく、30(mPa・s)以上がより好ましく、40(mPa・s)以上が更に好ましく、50(mPa・s)以上がより更に好ましく、60(mPa・s)以上がさらにより好ましく、70(mPa・s)以上が特に好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物では、回転粘度と屈折率異方性の関数であるZが特定の値を示すことが好ましい。

 Zは、13000以下が好ましく、12000以下がより好ましく、11000以下が特に好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物は、アクティブマトリクス表示素子に使用する場合においては、1011(Ω・m)以上の比抵抗を有することが好ましく、1012(Ω・m)がより好ましく、1013(Ω・m)以上がさらに好ましく、1014(Ω・m)以上がよりさらに好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物はネマチック相-等方性液体相転移温度(TNI)を幅広い範囲で使用することができるものであるが、当該相転移温度(TNI)は、60~120℃であることが好ましく、70~110℃がより好ましく、75~100℃が特に好ましい。
 以下、本発明に係る液晶組成物に含まれうる各成分について詳説する。
 本発明に係る第一成分は、一般式(1):

 当該一般式(1)で示される化合物は、本発明に係る他の成分との関係上比較的溶解度が高いため本発明に係る液晶組成物内に多く存在することができ、低粘度の液晶組成物を提供することができる。
 前記一般式(1)において、Rは、水素原子または炭素原子数1~15個のアルキル基であり、水素原子または炭素原子数1~10個のアルキル基であることが好ましく、水素原子または炭素原子数1~5個のアルキル基であることがより好ましく、水素原子または炭素原子数1~3個のアルキル基であることがさらに好ましく、水素原子またはメチル基であることが特に好ましい。中でも、Rが水素原子の化合物と、Rがメチル基の化合物とを併用することが特に好ましい。
 本発明に係る「炭素原子数1~15個のアルキル基」の例としては、メチル基、エチル基、プロピル基、ブチル基、イソプロピル基、イソブチル基、t-ブチル基、3-ペンチル基、イソペンチル基、ネオペンチル基、ペンチル基、ヘキシル基、ヘプチル基、オクチル基、ノニル基、デシル基、ドデシル基、ペンタデシル基などが挙げられる。なお、本明細書中において、アルキル基の例は共通であり、各々のアルキル基の炭素原子数の数によって適宜上記例示から選択される。また、本発明に係る炭素原子数1~15のアルキル基は、直鎖状又は分岐状が好ましく、直鎖状がより好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物における第一成分の含有量は、当該液晶組成物の使用態様・使用目的だけでなく他の成分との関係で適宜選択されるものであるため、当該液晶組成物に含まれる第一成分の含有量の好適範囲は実施形態によってそれぞれ別個独立していることが好ましい。本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第一成分の含有量の下限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量(100質量%)に対して、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては3質量%である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では5質量%である。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では7質量%である。またあるいは本発明の別の実施形態では110質量%である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では12質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では15質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では18質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では20質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では23質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では25質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では28質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では30質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では35質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では38質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では40質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では35質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では40質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では42質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では45質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では47質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では50質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では60質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では70質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では80質量%である。
 さらに、本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第一成分の含有量の上限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量に対して、例えば本発明の一つの形態では95質量%である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では85質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では75質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では65質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では55質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では45質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では35質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では25質量%である。
 本発明の液晶組成物において、一般式(1)で表される化合物の含有量は、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率、後述するプロセス適合性や滴下痕、焼き付き、誘電率異方性などの求められる性能に応じて適宜調整する必要がある。
 また、本発明の液晶組成物の粘度を低く保ち、応答速度が速い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。さらに、本発明の液晶組成物のTniを高く保ち、温度安定性の良い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。また、駆動電圧を低く保つために誘電率異方性を大きくしたいときは、上記の下限値を低く上限値が低いことが好ましい。
 本発明に係る第一成分において、一般式(1)で表す化合物同士の組み合わせ可能な種類は特に制限は無く、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率などの所望の性能に応じて適宜組み合わせて使用する。第一成分として使用する一般式(1)の化合物の種類は、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては、第一成分が1種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が2種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が3種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が4種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が5種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が6種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が7種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が8種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が9種類の一般式(1)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第一成分が10種類以上の一般式(1)で表される化合物を含む系である。
 本発明に係る一般式(1)で表される化合物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の下限値は、一つの実施形態では-1.5であり、別の実施形態では-1である。さらに別の実施形態では-0.5であり、さらに別の実施形態では0である。また一方、一般式(1)で表される化合物からなる液晶組成物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の上限値は、一つの実施形態では0であり、別の実施形態では+1である。さらに別の実施形態では-1であり、さらに別の実施形態では0.5である。またさらに別の実施形態では1.5であり、またさらに別の実施形態では-0.5である。
 本発明に係る第一成分の好ましい形態は、前記一般式(1)で表される化合物(前記一般式(1)(Rが水素原子または炭素原子数1~3個のアルキル基である)の中から、1~3種類の異なる化合物を混合したものである。また、その際、本発明に係る第一成分全体の質量比は、液晶組成物全体に対して5質量%以上45質量%以下が好ましい。さらに本発明に係る第一成分の好ましい形態は、Rが水素原子の化合物と、Rがメチル基の化合物とを組み合わせて使用することが特に好ましい。
 また、例えば、本発明に係る第一成分としてRが水素原子の化合物を単独で第一成分使用する場合は、20~45質量%が好ましく、例えば、本発明に係る第一成分としてRがメチル基の化合物を単独で第一成分使用する場合は、5~15質量%が好ましい。さらに、Rが水素原子の化合物と、Rがメチル基の化合物とを組み合わせて使用する場合は、液晶組成物全体における第一成分の割合は25~60質量%がより好ましい。
 本発明に係る第二成分は、一般式(2):

 第二成分として、一般式(2)で表される化合物を含むと、高いTniの液晶組成物を得ることができる。
 上記一般式(2)中、RおよびRはそれぞれ独立して、炭素原子数1~15個のアルキル基、炭素原子数1~15個のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数2~15個のアルケニル基であるからなる群から選択される少なくとも1つであることが好ましく、炭素原子数1~10個のアルキル基、炭素原子数1~10個のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数2~10個のアルケニル基からなる群から選択される少なくとも1つであることがより好ましく、炭素原子数1~5個のアルキル基、炭素原子数1~個のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数2~5個のアルケニル基からなる群から選択される少なくとも1つであることがさらに好ましい。
 また、RおよびRの少なくともいずれかがアルケニル基の場合、例えば上記式(A)に結合するアルケニル基は、炭素原子数2~5個が好ましく、例えば上記式(B)~(E)に結合するアルケニル基は、炭素原子数4~5個が好ましい。
 なお、上記アルキル基、アルコキシ基およびアルケニル基は、直鎖状又は分岐状が好ましく、直鎖状がより好ましい。
 本発明に係る「炭素原子数1~15個のアルキル基」の例は、上述した通りであるのでここでは省略する。
 本発明に係る「炭素原子数1~15個のアルコキシ基」の例は、該置換基中の少なくとも1個の酸素原子が環構造と直接結合する位置に存在することが好ましく、メトキシ基、エトキシ基、プロポキシ基(n-プロポキシ基、i-プロポキシ基)、ブトキシ基、ペンチルオキシ基、オクチルオキシ基、デシルオキシ基がより好ましい。なお、本明細書中において、アルコキシ基の例は共通であり、各々のアルコキシ基の炭素原子数の数によって適宜上記例示から選択される。
 本発明に係る「炭素原子数2~15個のアルケニル基」の例は、ビニル基、アリル基、1-プロペニル基、イソプロペニル基、2-ブテニル基、3-ブテニル基、1,3-ブタジエニル基、2-ペンテニル基、3-ペンテニル基、2-ヘキセニル基等が挙げられる。また、本発明に係るより好ましいアルケニル基としては次に記載する式(i)(ビニル基)、式(ii)(1-プロペニル基)、式(iii)(3-ブテニル基)および式(iv)(3-ペンテニル基):

で表されるが、本願発明の液晶組成物が重合性モノマーを含有する場合は、式(ii)および式(iv)で表される構造が好ましく、式(ii)で表される構造がより好ましい。まさらに、前記式(i)~(iv)の結合する環が式(A)の場合は、アルケニル基としては式(i)または式(ii)が特に好ましく、前記式(i)~(iv)の結合する環が式(B)~式(E)の場合は、アルケニル基としては式(iii)または式(iv)が特に好ましい。なお、本明細書中において、アルケニル基の例は共通であり、各々のアルケニル基の炭素原子数の数によって適宜上記例示から選択される。
 本発明に係る第二成分は、前記一般式(2)中において、AおよびAはそれぞれ独立して、上記式(B)~(E)からなる群から選択される少なくとも一つであることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第二成分として一般式(2)は、下記の一般式(2a)~(2i):

 特に第二成分として一般式(2a)、(2i)、(2d)および(2g)からなる群から選択される少なくとも1種に表される化合物を含むと、高Tniの液晶組成物を調製することができる。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物における第二成分の含有量は、当該液晶組成物の使用態様・使用目的だけでなく他の成分との関係で適宜選択されるものであるため、当該液晶組成物に含まれる第二成分の含有量の好適範囲は実施形態によってそれぞれ別個独立していることが好ましい。本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第二成分の含有量の下限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量(100質量%)に対して、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては1質量%である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では2質量%である。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では3質量%である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では4質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では5質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では10質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では15質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では20質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では25質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では30質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では40質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では50質量%である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では60質量%である。

 本発明の液晶組成物において、一般式(2)で表される化合物の含有量は、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率、後述するプロセス適合性や滴下痕、焼き付き、誘電率異方性などの求められる性能に応じて適宜調整する必要がある。
 また、本発明の液晶組成物の粘度を低く保ち、応答速度が速い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。さらに、本発明の液晶組成物のTniを高く保ち、温度安定性の良い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。また、駆動電圧を低く保つために誘電率異方性を大きくしたいときは、上記の下限値を低く上限値が低いことが好ましい。
 本発明に係る第二成分において、一般式(2)で表す化合物同士の組み合わせ可能な種類は特に制限は無く、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率などの所望の性能に応じて適宜組み合わせて使用する。第二成分として使用する一般式(2)の化合物の種類は、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては、第二成分が1種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が2種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が3種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が4種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が5種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が6種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が7種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が8種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が9種類の一般式(2)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第二成分が10種類以上の一般式(2)で表される化合物を含む系である。
 本発明に係る一般式(2)で表される化合物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の下限値は、一つの実施形態では-15であり、別の実施形態では-11である。さらに別の実施形態では-6であり、さらに別の実施形態では-2であるまた一方、一般式(1)で表される化合物からなる液晶組成物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の上限値は、一つの実施形態では-1であり、別の実施形態では0である。さらに別の実施形態では-0.5であり、さらに別の実施形態では-2である。またさらに別の実施形態では-1.5である。
 本発明に係る第二成分の好ましい形態は、前記一般式(2)で表される化合物の中から一般式(2a)、(2i)、(2d)および(2g)好ましく、液晶組成物全体に対して2~15質量%含まれている。特に、第二成分として含まれる化合物が複数種類の場合は、合計で6~15質量%がより好ましい。また、この場合、各種類の化合物は、それぞれ2~5%程度含まれていることが好ましい。

で表される化合物の群から少なくとも一つをさらに含むことが好ましい。したがって、当該第三成分は任意成分である。
 RL1およびRL2は、それが結合する環構造がフェニル基(芳香族)である場合には、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~5のアルキル基、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~4(又はそれ以上)のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数4~5のアルケニル基が好ましく、それが結合する環構造がシクロヘキサン、ピランおよびジオキサンなどの飽和した環構造の場合には、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~5のアルキル基、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~4(又はそれ以上)のアルコキシ基および直鎖状の炭素原子数2~5のアルケニル基が好ましい。
 本発明に係る一般式(3)で表される化合物は液晶組成物の化学的な安定性が求められる場合には塩素原子をその分子内に有さないことが好ましい。
 一般式(3)で表される化合物を液晶組成物に添加すると、液晶表示素子の駆動電圧を変化を最小限に抑えつつ液晶組成物の粘性、Δn、転移点を任意に変えることができるという点で好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物における第三成分の含有量は、上述した第三成分等の任意成分と同様に、液晶組成物の使用態様・使用目的だけでなく他の成分との関係で適宜選択されるものであるため、当該液晶組成物に含まれる第三成分の含有量の好適範囲は実施形態によってそれぞれ別個独立していることが好ましい。

 また、前記一般式(III-a)および一般式(III-b)で表される第三成分の含有量の下限値は、20質量%、25質量%、30質量%、35質量%、40質量%、45質量%および50質量%の順に好ましい。また、前記一般式(III-a)および一般式(III-b)で表される第三成分の含有量の上限値は、70質量、65質量%、60質量%、55質量%、50質量%、45質量%、40質量%、35質量%および30質量%の順に好ましい。
 本発明に係る第三成分の特に好ましい形態は、式(3.11)、式(3.31)、式(3.53)、式(3.61)、式(3.62)、式(3.109)、式(3.110)、式(3.111)および式(3.112)からなる群から選択される少なくとも一つで表される化合物の中から、1~3種類の異なる化合物を混合したものである。また、その際、本発明に係る第三成分全体の質量比は、液晶組成物全体に対して25~70質量%が特に好ましい。
 「第四成分」
 本発明係る液晶組成物は、第四成分として下記一般式(4):

 前記(a)又は前記(b)に示す基に含まれる水素原子は、それぞれシアノ基、フッ素原子、トリフルオロメチル基およびトリフルオロメトキシ基からなる群から選択される基により置換されていても良いが、MX2および/又はMX3が複数存在する場合は、それらは同一でも良く異なっていても良く、
 LX1、LX2およびLX3はそれぞれ独立して単結合、-COO-、-OCO-、-CHCH-、-(CH-、-OCH-、-CHO-、-OCF-、-CFO-,-CH=CH-又は-C≡C-を表し、LX1および/又はLX3が複数存在する場合は、それらは同一でも良く異なっていても良く、
 XX1およびXX2はそれぞれ独立してトリフルオロメチル基、トリフルオロメトキシ基又はフッ素原子を表すが、Xx1およびXx2の何れか一つはフッ素原子を表す。ただし、前記一般式(1)~一般式(3)で表される化合物を除く。)で表される化合物の群から少なくとも一つをさらに含むことが好ましい。したがって、当該第四成分は任意成分である。
 前記RX1およびRX2が結合する環構造が、フェニル基(芳香族)である場合において、好ましくは、直鎖状又は分岐状の炭素原子数1~10のアルキル基、直鎖状又は分岐状の炭素原子数1~10(又はそれ以上)のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数2~10のアルケニル基であり、より好ましくは、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~5のアルキル基、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~4(又はそれ以上)のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数4~5のアルケニル基である。一方、当該RX1およびRX2が結合する環構造が、シクロヘキサン、ピランおよびジオキサンなどの飽和した環構造の場合には、好ましくは、直鎖状又は分岐状の炭素原子数1~10のアルキル基、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~10(又はそれ以上)のアルコキシ基および直鎖状の炭素原子数2~10のアルケニル基であり、より好ましくは、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~5のアルキル基、直鎖状の炭素原子数1~4(又はそれ以上)のアルコキシ基および直鎖状の炭素原子数2~5のアルケニル基である。
 また、本発明に係る一般式(4)において、表示素子の応答速度の改善を重視する場合はアルケニル基が好ましく、電圧保持率等の信頼性を重視する場合にはアルキル基が好ましい。
 上記一般式(4)におけるアルキル基およびアルコキシ基は、上記の第一成分~第三成分と同様のアルキル基および/又はアルコキシ基が好ましい。また、上記一般式(4)におけるアルケニル基は、上記第三成分と同様のアルケニル基の例示が好ましく、前記式(i)~式(iv)がより好ましい。
 また、一般式(4)で表される化合物は液晶組成物の化学的な安定性が求められる場合には塩素原子をその分子内に有さないことが好ましい。
 このような一般式(4)で表される化合物を液晶組成物に添加すると、液晶表示素子の駆動電圧を変化させるという観点で特に好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物における第四成分の含有量は、上述した必須成分である第一成分および第二成分などと同様に、液晶組成物の使用態様・使用目的だけでなく他の成分との関係で適宜選択されるものであるため、当該液晶組成物に含まれる第四成分の含有量の好適範囲は実施形態によってそれぞれ別個独立していることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第四成分の含有量の下限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量(100質量%)に対して、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては1質量%であることが好ましい。または、本発明の一つの実施形態としては5質量%であることが好ましい。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では10質量%であることが好ましい。また、本発明の別の実施形態では20質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では30質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では40質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では50質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では55質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では60質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では65質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では70質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では75質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では80質量%であることが好ましい。
 さらに、本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第四成分の含有量の上限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量(100質量%)に対して、例えば本発明の一つの形態では95質量%であることが好ましい。また、本発明の別の実施形態では85質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では75質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では65質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では55質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では45質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では35質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では25質量%であることが好ましい。
 本発明の液晶組成物において、一般式(4)で表される化合物の含有量は、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率、後述するプロセス適合性や滴下痕、焼き付き、誘電率異方性などの求められる性能に応じて適宜調整する必要がある。
 また、本発明の液晶組成物の粘度を低く保ち、応答速度が速い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。さらに、本発明の液晶組成物のTniを高く保ち、温度安定性の良い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。また、駆動電圧を低く保つために誘電率異方性を大きくしたいときは、上記の下限値を低く上限値が低いことが好ましい。
 本発明に係る第四成分において、一般式(4)で表す化合物同士の組み合わせ可能な種類は特に制限は無く、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率などの所望の性能に応じて適宜組み合わせて使用する。第四成分として使用する一般式(4)の化合物の種類は、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては、第四成分が1種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が2種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が3種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が4種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が5種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が6種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が7種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が8種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が9種類の一般式(4)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第四成分が10種類以上の一般式(4)で表される化合物を含む系である。
 本発明に係る一般式(4)で表される化合物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の下限値は、一つの実施形態では-20であり、別の実施形態では-15である。さらに別の実施形態では-13であり、さらに別の実施形態では-12である。またさらに別の実施形態では-10であり、またさらに別の実施形態では-8である。また一方、一般式(4)で表される化合物からなる液晶組成物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の上限値は、一つの実施形態では0であり、別の実施形態では-1である。さらに別の実施形態では-2であり、さらに別の実施形態では-3である。またさらに別の実施形態では-4であり、またさらに別の実施形態では-5である。

 一般式(IV-a)において、Aは1,4-シクロヘキシレン基、1,4-フェニレン基又はテトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル基を表すが、Aが1,4-フェニレン基を表す場合、該1,4-フェニレン基中の1つ以上の水素原子はフッ素原子に置換されていてもよいが、1,4-シクロヘキシレン基、又は1,4-フェニレン基が好ましいく、より具体的には、当該発明の液晶組成物を用いて作製される表示素子および液晶ディスプレイにおいて応答速度を重視する場合には、1,4-フェニレン基を表すことが好ましく、動作温度範囲を重視する場合、すなわち高い動作温度範囲(Tniが高い)を必要とする場合、1,4-シクロヘキシレン基を表すことが好ましく、1,4-フェニレン基を表す場合には、ベンゼン環中の1つ以上の水素原子はフッ素に置換されていても良いが、無置換、1置換又は2置換が好ましく、無置換がより好ましい。2置換の場合には2,3-ジフルオロ-1,4-フェニレン基を表すことが好ましい。
 前記一般式(IV-a)で表される化合物は、具体的には次に記載する一般式(IV-a-1)および/又は一般式(IV-b-1):

 上記一般式(IV-d)において、R4gは、炭素原子数1~8のアルキル基、炭素原子数2~8のアルケニル基、炭素原子数1~8のアルコキシ基又は炭素原子数2~8のアルケニルオキシ基を表すことが好ましく、炭素原子数1~8のアルキル基、炭素原子数2~8のアルケニル基を表すことがより好ましく、炭素原子数1~8のアルキル基を表すことが更に好ましく、炭素原子数3~5のアルキル基を表すことがより更に好ましい。

 前記一般式(IV-d)において、Aは1,4-シクロヘキシレン基、1,4-フェニレン基又はテトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル基を表すことが好ましいが、当該液晶組成物を用いて作製される表示素子および液晶ディスプレイにおいて応答速度を重視する場合には、1,4-フェニレン基又はテトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル基を表すことが好ましく、1,4-フェニレン基を表すことがより好ましい。駆動電圧を重視する場合には1,4-フェニレン基又はテトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル基を表すことが好ましく、テトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル基を表すことがより好ましい。動作温度範囲を重視する場合、すなわち高い動作温度範囲を必要とする場合、1,4-シクロヘキシレン基又はテトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル基を表すことが好ましく、1,4-シクロヘキシレン基を表すことがより好ましい。1,4-フェニレン基を表す場合には、ベンゼン環中の1つ以上の水素原子はフッ素原子に置換されていても良いが、無置換、1置換又は2置換が好ましく、2置換の場合には2,3-ジフルオロベンゼンを表すことが好ましい。
 前記一般式(IV-d)において、Zは単結合、-OCH-、-OCF-、-CHO-、又は-CFO-を表すが、単結合、-OCF-又は-CFO-を表すことが好ましく、単結合を表すことがより好ましい。
 前記一般式(IV-c)において、nは0又は1を表すが、応答速度を重視する場合0を表すことが好ましく、動作温度範囲を重視する場合、すなわち高い動作温度範囲を必要とする場合、1を表すことが好ましい。
 なお、上記一般式(IV-a)~(IV-d)において、R4a~R4hは、一般式(4)におけるRX1およびRX2に相当するものであるため、アルキル基、アルケニル基、アルコキシ基又はアルケニルオキシ基については、直鎖状又は分岐状が好ましく、直鎖状がより好ましいことは言うまでもない。
 本発明に係る一般式(IV-d)で表される化合物は具体的には次に記載する一般式(IV-d-1)~(IV-d-12):

 本発明に係る一般式(IV-d)(一般式(IV-d-1)~(IV-d-12)も含む。)におけるR4gおよびR4hはそれぞれ独立して、炭素原子数1~8のアルキル基、炭素原子数2~8のアルケニル基、炭素原子数1~8のアルコキシ基又は炭素原子数2~8のアルケニルオキシ基を表すが、炭素原子数1~8のアルキル基又は炭素原子数2~8のアルケニル基を表すことが好ましく、炭素原子数2~5のアルキル基又は炭素原子数2~5のアルケニル基を表すことがより好ましく、炭素原子数2~5のアルキル基を表すことが更に好ましく、直鎖であることが好ましく、R4gおよびR4hが共にアルキル基である場合には、それぞれの炭素原子数は異なっている方が好ましい。
 また、第四成分として一般式(IV-d-6)を選択する場合、前記一般式(2)で表される化合物とが同一の化学構造の条件は、前記一般式(IV-d-6)で表される化合物は第四成分には含まれないことが好ましい。
 更に詳述すると、R4gがプロピル基を表しR4hがエチル基を表す化合物又はR4gがブチル基を表しR4hがエチル基を表す化合物が好ましい。
 本発明に係る一般式(IV-d-1)で表される化合物は、具体的には式(4.44)~式(4.55)で表される化合物であることが好ましい。

 本発明に係る第四成分の特に好ましい形態は、上記式(4.28)、式(4.29)、式(4.30)、式(4.31)、式(4.38)、式(4.39)、式(4.40)、式(4.43)、式(4.44)、式(4.46)、式(4.47)、式(4.49)、式(4.50)、式(4.51)および式(4.52)で表される化合物からなる群から選択される化合物の中から、1~3種類の異なる化合物を混合したものである。また、その際、本発明に係る第四成分全体の質量比は、液晶組成物全体に対して15~45質量%が特に好ましい。
 本発明の液晶組成物は、第五成分として、以下の一般式(V-A)および一般式(V-B)で表される化合物を少なくとも1種以上さらに含有してもよい。

 このような一般式(V-A)および(V-B)で表される化合物を液晶組成物に添加すると、特に低粘度の液晶組成物が得られるという観点で特に好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物における第五成分の含有量は、上述した必須成分である第一成分および第二成分などと同様に、液晶組成物の使用態様・使用目的だけでなく他の成分との関係で適宜選択されるものであるため、当該液晶組成物に含まれる第四成分の含有量の好適範囲は実施形態によってそれぞれ別個独立していることが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第五成分の含有量の下限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量(100質量%)に対して、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては1質量%であることが好ましい。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では10質量%であることが好ましい。また、本発明の別の実施形態では20質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では30質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では40質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では50質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では55質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では60質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では65質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では70質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では75質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では80質量%であることが好ましい。
 さらに、本発明に係る液晶組成物において、第五成分の含有量の上限値は、本発明の液晶組成物の総量(100質量%)に対して、例えば本発明の一つの形態では95質量%であることが好ましい。また、本発明の別の実施形態では85質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では75質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では65質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では55質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では45質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では35質量%であることが好ましい。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では25質量%であることが好ましい。
 本発明の液晶組成物において、一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物の含有量は、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率、後述するプロセス適合性や滴下痕、焼き付き、誘電率異方性などの求められる性能に応じて適宜調整する必要がある。
 また、本発明の液晶組成物の粘度を低く保ち、応答速度が速い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。さらに、本発明の液晶組成物のTniを高く保ち、温度安定性の良い液晶組成物が必要な場合は上記の下限値が高く上限値が高いことが好ましい。また、駆動電圧を低く保つために誘電率異方性を大きくしたいときは、上記の下限値を低く上限値が低いことが好ましい。
 本発明に係る第五成分において、一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表す化合物同士の組み合わせ可能な種類は特に制限は無く、低温での溶解性、転移温度、電気的な信頼性、複屈折率などの所望の性能に応じて適宜組み合わせて使用する。第五成分として使用する一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)の化合物の種類は、例えば本発明の一つの実施形態としては、第五成分が1種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。あるいは本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が2種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。また、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が3種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が4種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が5種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が6種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が7種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が8種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が9種類の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物である。さらに、本発明の別の実施形態では第五成分が10種類以上の一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物を含む系である。
 本発明に係る一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の下限値は、一つの実施形態では-1であり、別の実施形態では-0.9である。さらに別の実施形態では-0.8であり、さらに別の実施形態では-0.7である。またさらに別の実施形態では-0.5であり、またさらに別の実施形態では-0.4である。また一方、一般式(V-A)又は(V-B)で表される化合物からなる液晶組成物の誘電率異方性(Δε)の上限値は、一つの実施形態では+1であり、別の実施形態では+0.9である。さらに別の実施形態では+0.8であり、さらに別の実施形態では+0.7である。またさらに別の実施形態では+0.6であり、またさらに別の実施形態では+0.5である。
 本発明に係る一般式(V-A)で表される化合物は、具体的には以下に挙げる式(5.1)~式(5.60)で表される化合物が好ましい。

 本発明に係る液晶組成物は、上述の第一成分~第五成分で表される化合物以外に、用途に応じて、通常のネマチック液晶、スメクチック液晶、コレステリック液晶、カイラル剤、酸化防止剤、紫外線吸収剤、重合性モノマーなどの他の成分を含有しても良い。また、これら他の成分のうち、酸化防止剤や紫外線吸収剤は特に制限されることはなく、公知のものを使用することができる。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物は、重合性モノマーをさらに含有することが好ましい。すなわち、本発明に係る重合性モノマーは、一般式(6):

 上記一般式(6)中、X61およびX62は、何れも水素原子を表すジアクリレート誘導体、何れもメチル基を有するジメタクリレート誘導体の何れも好ましく、一方が水素原子を表しもう一方がメチル基を表す化合物も好ましい。これらの化合物の重合速度は、ジアクリレート誘導体が最も早く、ジメタクリレート誘導体が遅く、非対称化合物がその中間であり、その用途により好ましい態様を用いることができる。PSA表示素子においては、ジメタクリレート誘導体が特に好ましい。
 上記一般式(6)中、SpおよびSpはそれぞれ独立して、単結合、炭素原子数1~8のアルキレン基又は-O-(CH-を表すが、PSA表示素子においては少なくとも一方が単結合であることが好ましく、共に単結合を表す化合物又は一方が単結合でもう一方が炭素原子数1~8のアルキレン基又は-O-(CH-を表す態様が好ましい。この場合1~4のアルキル基が好ましく、sは1~4が好ましい。
 上記一般式(6)中、Zは、-OCH-、-CHO-、-COO-、-OCO-、-CFO-、-OCF-、-CHCH-、-CFCF-又は単結合が好ましく、-COO-、-OCO-又は単結合がより好ましく、単結合が特に好ましい。
 上記一般式(6)中、Bは任意の水素原子がフッ素原子により置換されていても良い1,4-フェニレン基、トランス-1,4-シクロヘキシレン基又は単結合を表すが、1,4-フェニレン基又は単結合が好ましい。Bが単結合以外の環構造を表す場合、Zは単結合以外の連結基も好ましく、Bが単結合の場合、Zは単結合が好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(6)で表される重合性モノマーの含有量は、当該液晶組成物の全体の量(100質量%)に対して、0.05~1質量%が好ましく、0.1~0.5質量%がより好ましく、0.1~0.4質量%が更に好ましく、0.1~0.3質量%が特に好ましく、0.15~0.3質量%が最も好ましい。
 当該重合性モノマーの含有量が0.1~0.3質量%であると液晶表示素子の表示特性と信頼性のバランスの観点で好ましい。
 これらの点から、一般式(6)において、SpおよびSpの間の環構造は、具体的には次に記載する構造が好ましい。
 前記一般式(6)において、Bが単結合を表し、環構造が二つの環で形成される場合において、次の式(VIa-1)から式(VIa-5)

 これらの骨格を含む重合性モノマーは重合後の配向規制力がPSA型液晶表示素子に最適であり、良好な配向状態が得られることから、表示ムラが抑制されるか、又は、全く発生しない。
 以上のことから、本発明に係る重合性モノマーとしては、式(6.1)~式(6.4)が特に好ましく、中でも式(6.2)が最も好ましい。

 本発明の液晶組成物にモノマーを添加する場合において、重合開始剤が存在しない場合でも重合は進行するが、重合を促進するために重合開始剤を含有していてもよい。重合開始剤としては、ベンゾインエーテル類、ベンゾフェノン類、アセトフェノン類、ベンジルケタール類、アシルフォスフィンオキサイド類等が挙げられる。また、保存安定性を向上させるために、安定剤を添加しても良い。使用できる安定剤としては、例えば、ヒドロキノン類、ヒドロキノンモノアルキルエーテル類、第三ブチルカテコール類、ピロガロール類、チオフェノール類、ニトロ化合物類、β-ナフチルアミン類、β-ナフトール類、ニトロソ化合物等が挙げられる。
 また、本発明に係る液晶組成物および/又は重合性モノマーを含有する液晶組成物では、当該滴下痕の抑制にも有効であることが確認された。ここで、「滴下痕」とは、黒表示した場合に液晶組成物を滴下した痕が白く浮かび上がる現象と定義する。以下、簡単に滴下痕について説明する。
 近年における液晶表示素子の用途拡大に起因して、その使用方法や製造方法に大きな変化が見られ、これらに対応するためには、従来知られている基本的な物性値以外の特性についても最適化が求められるようになった。すなわち、液晶組成物を使用する液晶表示素子はVA型やIPS型等が広く使用されるに至り、その大きさも50型以上の超大型サイズの表示素子が使用されるようになった。このような基板サイズの大型化に伴い、液晶組成物の基板への注入方法が従来の真空注入法から滴下注入(ODF:One Drop Fill)法が主流となり(特開平6-235925参照)、液晶組成物を基板に滴下した際の滴下痕が表示品位の低下を招く問題が表面化するに至った。さらに、液晶表示素子中の液晶材料のプレチルト角の生成を高速応答性を目的に、PS液晶表示素子(polymer stabilized、ポリマー安定化)、PSA液晶表示素子(polymer sustained alignment、ポリマー維持配向)が開発され(特開2002-357830号公報参照)、滴下痕の問題はより大きな問題となっている。
 すなわち、当該PS又はPSAの表示素子は液晶組成物中にモノマーを添加し、組成物中のモノマーを硬化させることに特徴を有する。アクティブマトリクス用液晶組成物は、高い電圧保持率を維持する必要性から、使用可能な化合物が特定され、化合物中にエステル結合を有する化合物は使用が制限されている。PSA液晶表示素子に使用するモノマーはアクリレート系が主であり、化合物中にエステル結合を有するものが一般的であり、このような化合物はアクティブマトリクス用液晶化合物としては通常使用されないものである(特開2002-357830号公報参照)。このような異物は、滴下痕の発生を誘発し、表示不良による液晶表示素子の歩留まりの悪化が問題となっている。また、液晶組成物中に酸化防止剤、光吸収剤等の添加物を添加する際にも歩留まりの悪化が問題となる。
 このような滴下痕の抑制には、液晶組成物中に混合した重合性モノマーの重合により、液晶相層中にポリマー層を形成することにより配向制御膜との関係で発生する滴下痕を抑制する方法が開示されている(特開2006-58755号参照)。しかしながら、この方法においては液晶中に添加した重合性モノマーに起因する表示の焼き付きの問題があり、滴下痕の抑制についてもその効果は不十分であり、液晶表示素子としての基本的な特性を維持しつつ、焼き付きや滴下痕の発生し難い液晶表示素子の開発が求められている。
 本発明に係る重合性モノマーを含有する液晶組成物(以下、重合性モノマー含有液晶組成物とも称する。)は、液晶表示素子に有用であり、特にアクティブマトリクス駆動用液晶表示素子に有用であり、PSAモード、PSVAモード、VAモード、IPSモード又はECBモード用液晶表示素子に用いることができる。
 本発明の重合性モノマー含有液晶組成物は、これに含まれる重合性モノマーが紫外線照射により重合することで液晶配向能が付与され、液晶組成物の複屈折を利用して光の透過光量を制御する液晶表示素子に使用される。液晶表示素子として、AM-LCD(アクティブマトリックス液晶表示素子)、TN(ネマチック液晶表示素子)、STN-LCD(超ねじれネマチック液晶表示素子)、OCB-LCDおよびIPS-LCD(インプレーンスイッチング液晶表示素子)に有用であるが、AM-LCDに特に有用であり、透過型あるいは反射型の液晶表示素子に用いることができる。
 また、後述する液晶表示素子および図1~4の内容を参考にすると、液晶表示素子に使用される液晶セルの2枚の基板2,8はガラス又はプラスチックの如き柔軟性をもつ透明な材料を用いることができ、一方はシリコン等の不透明な材料でも良い。また、透明電極(層)6,14を有する透明基板2,8は、例えば、ガラス板等の透明基板2,8上にインジウムスズオキシド(ITO)をスパッタリングすることにより得ることができる。
 前記透明電極(層)やTFTが形成された基板2,8を、透明電極(層)6,14が内側となるように対向させる。その際、スペーサー(図示せず)を介して、基板の間隔を調整してもよい。このときは、得られる調光層の厚さが1~100μmとなるように調整するのが好ましく、1.5から10μmがより好ましい(図1~4参照)。
 また、偏光板を使用する場合は、コントラストが最大になるように液晶の屈折率異方性Δnとセル厚dとの積を調整することが好ましい。又、二枚の偏光板1,9がある場合は、各偏光板の偏光軸を調整して視野角やコントラトが良好になるように調整することもできる(図1~4参照)。更に、視野角を広げるための位相差フィルムも使用することもできる。スペーサーとしては、例えば、ガラス粒子、プラスチック粒子、アルミナ粒子、フォトレジスト材料等が挙げられる。その後、エポキシ系熱硬化性組成物等のシール剤を、液晶注入口を設けた形で該基板にスクリーン印刷し、該基板同士を貼り合わせ、加熱しシール剤を熱硬化させる。
 上記のように2枚の基板を対向して貼り合わせることにより形成した液晶組成物を収容する液晶組成物収容空間に対して重合性モノマー含有液晶組成物を導入する方法は、通常の真空注入法又はODF法などを用いることができる。しかし、真空注入法による重合性モノマー含有液晶組成物を導入する方法では滴下痕は発生しないものの、注入の痕が残る課題を有しているものであるが、本願発明においては、ODF法を用いて製造する表示素子により好適に使用することができる。
 本発明に係る重合性モノマーを重合させる方法としては、液晶の良好な配向性能を得るためには、適度な重合速度が望ましいので、紫外線又は電子線等の活性エネルギー線を単一又は併用又は順番に照射することによって重合させる方法が好ましい。紫外線を使用する場合、偏光光源を用いても良いし、非偏光光源を用いても良い。また、重合性モノマー含有液晶組成物を2枚の基板間に挟持させて状態で重合を行う場合には、少なくとも照射面側の基板は活性エネルギー線に対して適当な透明性が与えられていなければならない。また、光照射時にマスクを用いて特定の部分のみを重合させた後、電場や磁場又は温度等の条件を変化させることにより、未重合部分の配向状態を変化させて、更に活性エネルギー線を照射して重合させるという手段を用いても良い。特に紫外線露光する際には、重合性モノマー含有液晶組成物に交流電界を印加しながら紫外線露光することが好ましい。印加する交流電界は、周波数10Hzから10kHzの交流が好ましく、周波数60Hzから10kHzがより好ましく、電圧は液晶表示素子の所望のプレチルト角に依存して選ばれる。つまり、印加する電圧により液晶表示素子のプレチルト角を制御することができる。MVAモードの液晶表示素子においては、配向安定性およびコントラストの観点からプレチルト角を80度から89.9度に制御することが好ましい。
 前記紫外線又は電子線等の活性エネルギー線を照射する時の温度は、本発明の液晶組成物の液晶状態が保持される温度範囲内であることが好ましい。室温に近い温度、即ち、典型的には15~35℃での温度で重合させることが好ましい。紫外線を発生させるランプとしては、メタルハライドランプ、高圧水銀ランプ、超高圧水銀ランプ等を用いることができる。また、照射する紫外線の波長としては、液晶組成物の吸収波長域でない波長領域の紫外線を照射することが好ましく、必要に応じて、紫外線をカットして使用することが好ましい。照射する紫外線の強度は、0.1mW/cm~100W/cmが好ましく、2mW/cm~50W/cmがより好ましい。照射する紫外線のエネルギー量は、適宜調整することができるが、10mJ/cmから500J/cmが好ましく、100mJ/cmから200J/cmがより好ましい。紫外線を照射する際に、強度を変化させても良い。紫外線を照射する時間は照射する紫外線強度により適宜選択されるが、10秒から3600秒が好ましく、10秒から600秒がより好ましい。
 本発明における液晶組成物は、一般式(1)および一般式(2)の化合物を必須とするものであるが、より好ましい態様として、一般式(3)、一般式(4)、一般式(3)、一般式(4)、一般式(V-A)、一般式(V-B)および一般式(6)で表される重合性モノマーからなる群から選択される少なくとも1種を含有することができる。こ
の場合に含有量は次に記載する含有量が好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)および一般式(2)で表される化合物を含有する場合には、これらの化合物の合計含有量が、20~70質量%が好ましく、25~65質量%がより好ましく、30~60質量%が更に好ましく、35~55質量%が特に好ましく、40~50質量%が最も好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)、一般式(2)および一般式(3)で表される化合物を含有する場合には、これらの化合物の合計含有量が、20~90質量%が好ましく、25~85質量%がより好ましく、30~80質量%が更に好ましく、35~75質量%が特に好ましく、40~70質量%が最も好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)、一般式(2)および一般式(4)で表される化合物を含有する場合には、これらの化合物の合計含有量が40~100質量%が好ましく、50~100質量%がより好ましく、60~100質量%が更に好ましく、70~100質量%が特に好ましく、80~100質量%が最も好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)、一般式(2)および一般式(6)で表される化合物を含有する場合には、これらの化合物の合計含有量が20~75質量%が好ましく、25~70質量%がより好ましく、30~65質量%が更に好ましく、35~60質量%が特に好ましく、40~55質量%が最も好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)、一般式(2)、一般式(3)および一般式(4)で表される化合物を含有する場合には、これらの化合物の合計含有量が70~100質量%が好ましく、80~100質量%がより好ましく、90~100質量%が更に好ましく、95~100質量%が特に好ましく、98~100質量%が最も好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物において、一般式(1)、一般式(2)、一般式(3)および一般式(6)で表される化合物を含有する場合には、これらの化合物の合計含有量が20~95質量%が好ましく、25~90質量%がより好ましく、30~85質量%が更に好ましく、35~80質量%が特に好ましく、40~75質量%が最も好ましい。
 本発明における液晶組成物を構成する各化合物中、1分子内にフッ素原子数を2個以上有する化合物、具体的には一般式(1)、(2)、(4)、および(6)で表される化合物の占める割合は液晶組成物中の40~90質量%が好ましく、45~85質量%がより好ましく、50~80質量%が更に好ましいが、更に詳述すると、応答速度を重視する場合には50質量%~60質量%が好ましく、駆動電圧を重視する場合には60~80質量%が好ましい。
 本発明の第二は、本発明に係る液晶組成物を用いた液晶表示素子である。図1は、液晶表示素子の構成を模式的に示す図である。また、図1では、説明のために便宜上各構成要素を離間して記載している。図2は、当該図1における基板上に形成された薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3(または薄膜トランジスタ層3とも称する。)のII線で囲まれた領域を拡大した平面図である。図3は、図2におけるIII-III線方向に図1に示す液晶表示素子を切断した断面図である。図4は、図3におけるIVの領域である薄膜トランジスタを拡大した図である。以下、図1~4を参照して、本発明に係る液晶表示素子を説明する。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子10の構成は、図1に記載するように透明導電性材料からなる透明電極(層)6(または共通電極6とも称する。)を具備した第一の基板8と、透明導電性材料からなる画素電極および各画素に具備した前記画素電極を制御する薄膜トランジスタを形成した薄膜トランジスタ層3を含む第二の基板2と、前記第一の基板8と第二の基板2との間に挟持された液晶組成物(または液晶層5)を有し、該液晶組成物中の液晶分子の電圧無印加時の配向が前記基板2,8に対して略垂直である液晶表示素子であって、該液晶組成物として前記本発明の液晶組成物を用いたことに特徴を有するものである。また図1および図3に示すように、前記第二の基板2および前記第一の基板8は、一対の偏光板1,9により挟持されてもよい。さらに、図1では、前記第一の基板8と共通電極6との間にカラーフィルタ7が設けられている。またさらに、本発明に係る液晶層5と隣接し、かつ当該液晶層5を構成する液晶組成物と直接当接するよう一対の配向膜4を透明電極(層)6,14表面に形成してもよい。
 すなわち、本発明に係る液晶表示素子10は、第二の偏光板1と、第二の基板2と、薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層(又は薄膜トランジスタ層とも称する)3と、配向膜4と、液晶組成物を含む層5と、配向膜4と、共通電極6と、カラーフィルタ7と、第一の基板8と、第一の偏光板9と、が順次積層された構成である。
 また図2および図3に示すように、第二の基板2の表面に形成されている薄膜トランジスタを含む電極層3は、走査信号を供給するためのゲート配線25と表示信号を供給するためのデータ配線24とが互いに交差しており、かつ前記複数のゲート配線25と複数のデータ配線24とに囲まれた領域には、画素電極21がマトリックス状に形成されている。画素電極21に表示信号を供給するスイッチ素子として、前記ゲート配線25と前記データ配線24が互いに交差している交差部近傍において、ソース電極26、ドレイン電極23およびゲート電極27を含む薄膜トランジスタが、前記画素電極21と連結して設けられている。さらに、前記複数のゲート配線25と複数のデータ配線24とに囲まれた領域にはデータ配線24を介して供給される表示信号を保存するストレイジキャパシタ22が設けられている。
 本発明においては、図2に記載するように薄膜トランジスタが逆スタガード型である液晶表示素子に好適に使用でき、ゲート配線25やデータ配線24などは金属膜であることが好ましく、アルミニウム配線を用いる場合が特に好ましい。さらに、ゲート配線25およびデータ配線24はゲート絶縁膜を介して重なっている。
 また、当該カラーフィルタ7は、光の漏れを防止する観点で、薄膜トランジスタおよびストレイジキャパシタ22に対応する部分にブラックマトリックス(図示せず)を形成することが好ましい。
 本発明に係る液晶表示素子の薄膜トランジスタの構造の好適な一態様は、例えば、図3および図4で示すように、基板2表面に形成されたゲート電極11と、当該ゲート電極11を覆い、かつ前記基板2の略全面を覆うように設けられたゲート絶縁層13と、前記ゲート電極11と対向するよう前記ゲート絶縁層13の表面に形成された半導体層17と、前記半導体層17の表面の一部を覆うように設けられた保護膜18と、前記保護層18および前記半導体層17の一方の側端部を覆い、かつ前記基板2表面に形成された前記ゲート絶縁層13と接触するように設けられたドレイン電極15と、前記保護膜18および前記半導体層17の他方の側端部を覆い、かつ前記基板2表面に形成された前記ゲート絶縁層13と接触するように設けられたソース電極19a,19bと、前記ソース電極19a,19bを覆い、かつ前記ゲート絶縁層13に倣って前記ゲート絶縁層13の略全面を覆うように設けられた透明電極14と、前記透明電極14の一部および前記ソース電極19a,19bを覆うように設けられた保護層101(図3では図示せず)と、を有している。
 また、図3および4に示すようにゲート電極11の表面にゲート電極との段差を無くす等の理由により陽極酸化被膜12を形成してもよい。さらに、ショットキー障壁の幅や高さを低減する目的で半導体層17とドレイン電極15との間にオーミック接触層16を設けても良い。
 上述したように液晶表示素子を製造する過程において、滴下痕の発生は、注入される液晶材料に大きな影響を受けるものであるが、液晶表示素子の構成によってもその影響は避けられない。特に、液晶表示素子内に形成されるカラーフィルタ7、又は薄膜トランジスタなどは、図3に示すように、薄い配向膜4や透明電極6,14等だけが液晶組成物と隔てる部材であるため、例えばカラーフィルタ7に用いられる顔料の化学構造あるいはカラーフィルタ樹脂の化学構造と特定化学構造を有する液晶化合物との組合せにより滴下痕の発生に影響が生じる。
 特に、本発明に係る液晶表示素子の薄膜トランジスタとして上記のような逆スタガード型を使用する場合には、ドレイン電極15がゲート電極11を覆うように形成されるためドレイン電極15の面積が増大する傾向にある。一般にドレイン電極は、銅、アルミニウム、クロム、チタン、モリブデン、タンタル等の金属材料で形成され、パッシベーション処理を施されるのが通常の形態である。しかし、例えば図3および図4で示すように、保護膜18は一般に薄く、配向膜4も薄く、イオン性物質を遮断しない可能性が高いことから、金属材料と液晶組成物の相互作用による滴下痕の発生を避けることができなかった。
 しかし、本発明に係る液晶組成物を含む液晶表示素子では、例えば液晶表示素子の部材と、本発明に係る液晶組成物の表面自由エネルギーあるいは吸着エネルギー等との間の微妙なバランスの観点から滴下痕の発生の問題も低減することができると考えられる。
 本発明に係る液晶組成物を用いた液晶表示素子は高速応答と表示不良の抑制を両立させた有用なものであり、特に、アクティブマトリックス駆動用液晶表示素子に有用であり、VAモード、PSVAモード、PSAモード、IPSモード、FFSモード又はECBモード用に適用できる。
 以下に実施例を挙げて本発明を更に詳述するが、本発明はこれらの実施例に限定されるものではない。また、以下の実施例及び比較例の組成物における「%」は『質量%』を意味する。
 実施例中、測定した特性は以下の通りである。
 (Tni):ネマチック相-等方性液体相転移温度(℃)
 (Δn):293Kにおける屈折率異方性
 (Δε):293Kにおける誘電率異方性
 (η):293Kにおける粘度(mPa・s)
 (γ1):293Kにおける回転粘度(mPa・s)
 (VHR):周波数50Hz,印加電圧4.5Vの条件下で333Kにおける電圧保持率(%)
耐熱試験後VHR:液晶組成物サンプルを封入した電気光学特性評価用TEG(テスト・エレメント・グループ)を120℃の恒温槽中に1.5時間保持した後、上述のVHR測定方法と同条件で測定した。
 尚、実施例において化合物の記載について以下の略号を用いる。

 (実施例)
 次に示す組成を有する液晶組成物を調製し、その物性値を測定した。この結果を次の表に示す。
 実施例1~6の液晶組成物および比較例を用いて、図1に示すVA液晶表示素子を作製した。この液晶表示素子は、アクティブ素子として逆スタガード型の薄膜トランジスタを有している。液晶組成物の注入は、滴下法にて行い、焼き付き、滴下痕、プロセス適合性、低温での溶解性および揮発性の評価を行った。本実施例1~6および比較例の組成および当該評価の実験結果を下記の表1~6に記す。
 尚、含有量の左側の記号は、上記化合物の略号の記載である。

 上記実施例2と比較例1、2との実験結果を見比べてみると、例えば、上記実施例2の組成である「3-Cy-CyV0/3-Cy-Cy-V1」を、分子量が同等の非アルケニル基を端部に備えた「3-Cy-Cy-2、3-Cy-Cy-4、3-Cy-Cy-5」に置き換えると、回転粘性が82から122に大幅に増加して応答速度が大幅に悪化することが確認できる。また、「3-Cy-CyV0/3-Cy-Cy-V1」は非アルケニル基を端部に備えた「3-Cy-Cy-2」などと比較して溶解度が優れているため、実施例2では「3-Cy-CyV0および3-Cy-Cy-V1」の2種類を利用するのみであったが、当該実施例2の同等の「Tni」、「Δε」および「Δn」を発揮するために比較例1では、「3-Cy-Cy-2、3-Cy-Cy-4、3-Cy-Cy-5」の3種類を混合する必要があり、液晶組成物の調製工程と原料管理工程が煩雑になって不利である。本来は、3-Cy-Cy-2のみ置換できれば応答速度的には有利であるが、転移点(Tni)の低下と溶解度の悪さからある「3-Cy-Cy-4」および「3-Cy-Cy-5」を併用せざるを得ない。以上のことから、本発明に係る一般式(1)が非存在下では、回転粘性が上昇して応答速度が低下し、また回転粘性を低くしようとするとTniが低下すると考えられる。さらに、溶解度が悪化して低温での保存性が悪化すると考えられる。

 上記実施例4と比較例3との実験結果を見比べてみると、例えば、上記(1*)や(2*)の化合物を用いて実施例4と同等の物性を得ようとすると、粘性および回転粘性が大幅に上昇して応答速度の悪化が起きることが確認できる。この際、一般式(2)で表される直環4環化合物が4種類から3種類に減っていることから、このような直環4環を減らして上記(1*)や(2*)の化合物を用いると応答速度が悪化するという点で好ましくない。

 上記実施例5と比較例3との実験結果を見比べてみると、例えば、実施例5において一般式(2)で表される直環4環化合物3種類に変えて(2*)~(2**)や(3*)~(3**)を用いて実施例と同等の物性を得ようとした場合、粘度と回転粘性が大幅に上昇し、応答速度が悪化することが確認される。

 以上で説明した各実施形態における各構成およびそれらの組み合わせ等は一例であり、本発明の趣旨を逸脱しない範囲で、構成の付加、省略、置換、およびその他の変更が可能である。また、本発明は各実施形態によって限定されることはなく、請求項(クレーム)の範囲によってのみ限定される。
 本発明にかかる液晶組成物は、液晶表示素子および液晶ディスプレイの分野に広く適用可能である。

Claims (8)

  1.  第一成分として一般式(1):

    で表される化合物と、
     第二成分として下記一般式(2):

    (上記一般式(2)中、RおよびRは、それぞれ独立して、炭素原子数1~15個のアルキル基、炭素原子数1~15個のアルコキシ基および炭素原子数2~15個のアルケニル基であるからなる群から選択される少なくとも1つであり、
    ~Aはそれぞれ独立して、以下の式(A)~(E):

    (上記一般式(3)中、RL1及びRL2はそれぞれ独立して、炭素原子数1~8のアルキル基を表し、該アルキル基中の1個又は非隣接の2個以上の-CH-はそれぞれ独立して-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-O-、-CO-、-COO-又は-OCO-によって置換されていてもよく、
     OLは0、1、2又は3を表し、
     BL1、BL2及びBL3はそれぞれ独立して、以下の(a)および(b)からなる群から選択される基であり、
     (a)1,4-シクロヘキシレン基(この基中に存在する1個の-CH-又は隣接していない2個以上の-CH-は-O-に置き換えられてもよい。)
     (b)1,4-フェニレン基(この基中に存在する1個の-CH=又は隣接していない2個以上の-CH=は-N=に置き換えられてもよい。)
     前記(a)および前記(b)に表される基に含まれる水素原子は、それぞれ独立してシアノ基、塩素原子またはフッ素原子で置換されても良く、
     LL1及びLL2はそれぞれ独立して、単結合、-CHCH-、-(CH-、-OCH-、-CHO-、-COO-、-OCO-、-OCF-、-CFO-、-CH=N-N=CH-、-CH=CH-、-CF=CF-又は-C≡C-を表し、
     OLが2又は3であってLL2が複数存在する場合は、それらは同一であっても異なっていても良く、OLが2又は3であってBL3が複数存在する場合は、それらは同一であっても異なっていても良いが、一般式(1)で表される化合物及び一般式(2)で表される化合物を除く。)
    で表される化合物の群から少なくとも一つをさらに含む、請求項1~3のいずれか1項に記載の液晶組成物。
  5.  第四成分として下記一般式(4):

    (上記一般式(4)中、RX1及びRX2はそれぞれ独立して、炭素原子数1から10のアルキル基、炭素原子数1から10のアルコキシ基又は炭素原子数2から10のアルケニル基を表し、これらの基中に存在する1個のメチレン基又は隣接していない2個以上のメチレン基は-O-又は-S-に置換されていても良く、またこれらの基中に存在する1個又は2個以上の水素原子はフッ素原子または塩素原子に置換されても良く、
    u及びIIIはお互い独立して、0、1又は2を表すが、u+IIIは2以下であり、
    X1、MX2及びMX3はそれぞれ独立して、以下の(a)および(b)からなる群から選択され、
     (a)トランス-1,4-シクロへキシレン基(この基中に存在する1個のメチレン基又は隣接していない2個以上のメチレン基は-O-又は-S-に置き換えられてもよい)、
     (b)1,4-フェニレン基(この基中に存在する1個の-CH=又は隣接していない2個以上の-CH=は-N=に置き換えられてもよい。)
     前記(a)又は前記(b)に表される基に含まれる水素原子は、それぞれシアノ基、フッ素原子、トリフルオロメチル基およびトリフルオロメトキシ基からなる群から選択される基により置換されていても良いが、MX2及び/又はMX3が複数存在する場合は、それらは同一でも良く異なっていても良く、
     LX1、LX2及びLX3はお互い独立して単結合、-COO-、-OCO-、-CHCH-、-(CH-、-OCH-、-CHO-、-OCF-、-CFO-,-CH=CH-又は-C≡C-を表し、LX1及び/又はLX3が複数存在する場合は、それらは同一でも良く異なっていても良く、
     XX1及びXX2はお互い独立してトリフルオロメチル基、トリフルオロメトキシ基又はフッ素原子を表すが、X31及びX32の何れか一つはフッ素原子を表す。ただし、一般式(2)および一般式(3)で表される化合物を除く。)
    で表される化合物の群から少なくとも一つをさらに含む、請求項1~4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶組成物。
  6.  反応性モノマーをさらに含有する、請求項1~4のいずれか1項に記載の液晶組成物。
  7.  請求項1~6のいずれか1項に記載の液晶組成物を用いた液晶表示素子。
  8.  請求項7に記載の液晶表示素子を用いた液晶ディスプレイ。
