Definitions
- the invention relates to an antimicrobial agent for the biocidal finishing of polymers, in particular of foams, based on a fine-grained silver-zinc zeolite A.
- NaiiAg (AIO2) i2 (SiO2) i2 * 27H 2 O incorporate zinc, resulting in a silver-zinc zeolite having the empirical formula Na 2 AgZn 7 (AIO2) i2 (SiO2) i2 * 27H 2 O is obtained.
- this is only possible to a limited extent when the zeolite A structure is retained should.
- the silver-zinc zeolite A typically only with a zinc oxide content of about 7 wt.% Can be expected.
- the cost savings are comparatively small because the silver content of silver zeolite A is reduced from about 4.65% by weight to only about 4.5% by weight in silver-zinc zeolite A.
- the invention is therefore based on the object, an antimicrobial agent for biocidal finishing of polymers, especially foams, on the basis of silver-zinc zeolite A in such a way that under favorable economic conditions, the antimicrobial effect can be increased.
- the invention achieves the stated object by adding zinc oxide powder to the fine-grained silver-zinc zeolite A.
- the biocidal effect of the foams equipped with such antimicrobial agent can be remarkably increased.
- This is surprising because the use of a zinc oxide powder in conjunction with a fine-grained silver zeolite A (without zinc oxide) rather brings about a deterioration of the antimicrobial effect. Due to the increase in the biocidal effect of the antimicrobial agent according to the invention either the higher biocidal effect can be used or the proportion of the antimicrobial agent can be reduced for economic reasons, without having to accept a disadvantage compared to the prior art with regard to the desired biocidal effect.
- the mixture of the fine-grained silver-zinc zeolite A and the zinc oxide powder may have a proportion of zinc oxide powder which corresponds to two to twenty times the amount of zinc oxide in the silver-zinc zeolite A.
- Particularly advantageous effects arise when the mixture of silver-zinc zeolite A and zinc oxide powder has a ten to twenty times the amount of zinc oxide in silver-zinc zeolite A corresponding amount of zinc oxide powder.
- the effect of the biocidal finish of a foam depends not only on the antimicrobial properties, but also on the amount and specific surface area of the agent used. For this reason, it is recommended to use a zinc oxide powder with a specific surface area between 2 and 10 m 2 / g. Preference is given to using zinc oxide powders having a specific surface area of between 4 and 8 m 2 , which corresponds to an average particle size of between 200 and 400 nm.
- this agent was added in varying amounts with different levels of free zinc oxide to a polyol component, and this polyol component was mixed with an isocyanate component for foaming reaction in an open vessel.
- the antimicrobial activity test was conducted in accordance with Japanese Industrial Standard JIS Z 2801: 2000.
- Escherichia coli DSM 787
- Staphylococcus aureus DSM 346
- the reduction number IR was determined to quantify the effectiveness of the biocidal equipment of the samples.
- a reduction factor of 2 a clearly antimicrobial effect of the evaluated samples is given, which increases logarithmically with increasing reduction factor.
- the polyol component comprised 99 g of a trifunctional base polyol (molecular weight 2500 to 3000 g / mol), 3.5 g of water as blowing agent, 1.2 g of a silicone stabilizer and 1.3 g of a foaming catalyst.
- the disocyanate component had 65 g of diphenylmethane diisocyanate with an isocyanate group content of 29.5% by weight.
- the isocyanate component and the polyol component were converted by a polyaddition reaction into an open-celled flexible foam having a density of about 40 kg / m 3 .
- Example 1 The polyol was added 1 g of a silver-zinc zeolite A with the formula Na 7 AgZn 2 (AIO 2) i2 (SiO2) i2 * 27H 2 O was added, the weight and a silver content of 4.5% and a. Contains zinc oxide content of 7 wt.%.
- EXAMPLE 2 1 g of a silver-zinc zeolite A according to Example 1 was used as the antimicrobial agent, but 1.05 g of zinc oxide having a specific surface area of 8 m 2 / g were admixed with this silver-zinc zeolite A. The ratio of the zinc oxide bound in the silver zeolite and the zinc oxide admixed with the zeolite powder was thus found to be 1:15.
- EXAMPLE 3 The biocidal finish of the foam was admixed with 1 g of a silver zeolite A having the molecular formula NanAg (AIO 2 ) 2 (SiO 2 ) 2 * 27H 2 O having a silver content of 4.65% by weight with 0.07 g of zinc oxide mixed with a specific surface area of 8 m 2 / g.
- This zinc oxide additive corresponds quantitatively to the zinc oxide content of the silver-zinc zeolite A according to Example 1.
- Example 4 As antimicrobial agent, according to Example 3, a silver zeolite A in an amount of 1 g was mixed with 1.40 g of zinc oxide (specific surface area 8 m 2 / g). This zinc oxide addition corresponds to 20 times the amount of the zinc oxide content of the silver-zinc zeolite A according to Example 1.
- samples 1 to 4 were prepared from open-cell flexible foam in the manner indicated and the antimicrobial according to the Japanese industrial standard JIS Z 2801: 2000 determined by determining the reduction factor IR for Escherichia coli (Gram positive) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram negative) after a week period. The results are summarized in the table below.
