 この種の燃料電池は、実用化のために小型化及び低コスト化が求められている。この点、高温無加湿下で運転可能な燃料電池であれば、冷却系及び加湿系を簡略化することができる。
 特許文献1には、最も乾燥しやすい酸化剤ガス流路の入口近傍、すなわち上流部分の水分量が不足している場合に、燃料ガス流量を増加させるか或いは燃料ガス圧力を減少させるかすることによって、酸化剤ガス流路の入口近傍の水分量を増加させるように構成された高温無加湿下で運転可能な燃料電池が開示されている。
 特許文献2には、図12に示すような横断面を有する燃料電池が開示されている。この燃料電池の単セル100はそれぞれ、膜電極接合体(MEA)108と一対のセパレータ110,112とを備える。膜電極接合体108は、高分子電解質膜102がカソード(酸素極)104及びアノード(燃料極)106により挟まれた構成を有する。各単セル100のセパレータ110,112は、膜電極接合体108を間に挟んで配置されている。セパレータ110とカソード104との間には酸化剤ガス流路114が形成されている。セパレータ112とアノード106との間には、燃料ガス流路116が形成されている。カソード104は、カソード触媒層104aとガス拡散層104bを積層して形成されている。アノード106は、アノード触媒層106aとガス拡散層106bを積層して形成されている。各セパレータ110,112は複数の溝を有している。各単セル100のセパレータ110の溝は、同単セル100に隣接する単セル110のセパレータ112の溝と対向して位置しており、この互いに対向する溝によって冷却媒体流路120が形成されている。冷却媒体流路120が膜電極接合体108の近傍に設けられているため、冷却媒体流路120を流れる冷却媒体(例えば冷却水)によって燃料電池は小さい熱抵抗で効率よく冷却される。
 特許文献3には、図13に示すような横断面を有する燃料電池が開示されている。図13中、図12の燃料電池の構成と対応する構成については図12と同一の符号を付している。図13の燃料電池では、燃料ガス流路116及び酸化剤ガス流路114の各々の全体に均一にガスを拡散させるべく、ガス拡散多孔体130,140が燃料ガス流路116及び酸化剤ガス流路114にそれぞれ設けられており、これにより燃料電池の高性能化を図っている。
 又、特許文献4に記載の燃料電池では、燃料電池で生成する水の排水性を向上させるべく、ガス拡散多孔体に導水層を設けることが行われている。

 特許文献1及び特許文献2に記載の燃料電池は、冷却性が高いため、高温性能に優れる。しかしながら、特に水分量の多い酸化剤ガス流路の出口近傍すなわち下流部分の排水性及びガス拡散性が悪い。そのため、燃料電池の負荷がそれほど高くない領域、すなわち電池温度が約50~約60℃の常温域での運転性能が低いという問題がある。なお、この種の燃料電池を搭載した電気自動車の場合、巡航速度で走行時には常温域で燃料電池の発電が行われる。
 特許文献3に記載の燃料電池は、特に常温域での電圧安定性に優れるものの、熱抵抗が大きいために高温環境下での冷却性能が不足する傾向にある。そのため、高温性能が高くないという問題がある。
 又、図12に示すようにセパレータ110,112の全面に設けられた溝で酸化剤ガス流路114及び燃料ガス流路116を形成したり、或いは図13に示すように膜電極接合体108の全面に対応するようにガス拡散多孔体130,140を配置したりした場合、アノード(燃料極)及びカソード(酸素極)を均等に冷却することが可能である。しかし、酸化剤ガス流路の入口近傍(上流部分)に位置するカソードの部分を積極的に冷却することはできないため、高温性能に劣るという問題がある。
 そこで本発明の目的は、高温性能、高温無加湿下での運転性能、及び発電性能を向上させることができ、さらには、特に水分量の多い酸化剤ガス流路の下流部分の排水性及びガス拡散性を良好にして、常温域での電圧安定性を向上させることができる燃料電池を提供することにある。
 上記の目的を達成するために、本発明の第1の態様では、積層された複数の単セルを有する燃料電池を提供する。各単セルは、固体高分子電解質膜の両面にそれぞれ電極を配置した膜電極接合体と、前記膜電極接合体を間に挟んで配置される第1のセパレータ及び第2のセパレータとを備える。各単セルの第1のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には酸化剤ガス流路が形成されている。各単セルの第2のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には燃料ガス流路が形成されている。各単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向は、同じ単セルの燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向と対向している。各酸化剤ガス流路は、酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。酸化剤ガス流路の上流部分は、各単セルの膜電極接合体に面する第1のセパレータの面に複数の第1の溝が設けられることによって互いに独立した複数の溝流路として構成されている。各酸化剤ガス流路の下流部分には第1のガス拡散多孔体が配置されている。各燃料ガス流路は、燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。燃料ガス流路の上流部分は、各単セルの膜電極接合体に面する第2のセパレータの面に複数の第2の溝が設けられることによって互いに独立した複数の溝流路として構成されている。各燃料ガス流路の下流部分には第2のガス拡散多孔体が配置されている。各単セルの第1のセパレータと同単セルに隣り合う単セルの第2のセパレータとの間には冷却媒体流路が形成されている。互いに隣り合う単セル同士の間の冷却媒体流路を冷却媒体が流れる方向は、それらの単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じである。各冷却媒体流路は、冷却媒体流路を冷却媒体が流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。各冷却媒体流路の上流部分は、同じ冷却媒体流路の下流部分と比べて、その冷却媒体流路と隣接する酸化剤ガス流路に面する膜電極接合体の面に近接して位置する。
 本発明の第2の態様では、積層された複数の単セルを有する燃料電池を提供する。各単セルは、固体高分子電解質膜の両面にそれぞれ電極を配置した膜電極接合体と、前記膜電極接合体を間に挟んで配置される第1のセパレータ及び第2のセパレータとを備える。各単セルの第1のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には酸化剤ガス流路が形成されている。各単セルの第2のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には燃料ガス流路が形成されている。各単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向は、同じ単セルの燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向と対向している。各酸化剤ガス流路は、酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。酸化剤ガス流路の上流部分は、各単セルの膜電極接合体に面する第1のセパレータの面に複数の第1の溝が設けられることによって互いに独立した複数の溝流路として構成されている。各酸化剤ガス流路の下流部分には第1のガス拡散多孔体が配置されている。各燃料ガス流路は、燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。燃料ガス流路の上流部分では、各単セルの膜電極接合体に面する第2のセパレータの面に複数の第2の溝が設けられている。各燃料ガス流路の下流部分及び上流部分には第2のガス拡散多孔体が配置されている。各単セルの第1のセパレータと同単セルに隣り合う単セルの第2のセパレータとの間には冷却媒体流路が形成されている。互いに隣り合う単セル同士の間の冷却媒体流路を冷却媒体が流れる方向は、それらの単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じである。各冷却媒体流路は、冷却媒体流路を冷却媒体が流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。各冷却媒体流路の上流部分は、同じ冷却媒体流路の下流部分と比べて、その冷却媒体流路と隣接する酸化剤ガス流路に面する膜電極接合体の面に近接して位置する。
 本発明の第3の態様では、積層された複数の単セルを有する燃料電池を提供する。各単セルは、固体高分子電解質膜の両面にそれぞれ電極を配置した膜電極接合体と、前記膜電極接合体を間に挟んで配置される第1のセパレータ及び第2のセパレータとを備える。各単セルの第1のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には酸化剤ガス流路が形成されている。各単セルの第2のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には燃料ガス流路が形成されている。各単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向は、同じ単セルの燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向と同じである。各酸化剤ガス流路は、酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。酸化剤ガス流路の上流部分は、各単セルの膜電極接合体に面する第1のセパレータの面に複数の第1の溝が設けられることによって互いに独立した複数の溝流路として構成されている。各酸化剤ガス流路の下流部分には第1のガス拡散多孔体が配置されている。各燃料ガス流路は、燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。各燃料ガス流路の下流部分及び上流部分には第2のガス拡散多孔体が配置されている。各単セルの第1のセパレータと同単セルに隣り合う単セルの第2のセパレータとの間には冷却媒体流路が形成されている。互いに隣り合う単セル同士の間の冷却媒体流路を冷却媒体が流れる方向は、それらの単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じである。各冷却媒体流路は、冷却媒体流路を冷却媒体が流れる方向に関して上流部分及び下流部分を有する。各冷却媒体流路の上流部分は、同じ冷却媒体流路の下流部分と比べて、その冷却媒体流路と隣接する酸化剤ガス流路に面する膜電極接合体の面に近接して位置する。
 上記第1~第3の態様の燃料電池において、各単セルの第1のセパレータは、冷却媒体流路の上流部分に対応する部分で同じ単セルの膜電極接合体に当接してもよい。
 上記第1~第3の態様の燃料電池において、各単セルの第1のセパレータと第1のガス拡散多孔体との間には、酸化剤ガス流路内の水を酸化剤ガス流路から排出するための第1の水流路が設けられてもよい。第1の水流路内の水は、酸化剤ガスが酸化剤ガス流路を流れるのに伴って、酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向にその隙間内を移動して酸化剤ガス流路から排出される。
 上記第1~第3の態様の燃料電池において、各単セルの第2のセパレータと第2のガス拡散多孔体との間には、燃料ガス流路内の水を燃料ガス流路から排出するための第2の水流路が設けられてもよい。第2の水流路内の水は、燃料ガスが燃料ガス流路を流れるのに伴って、燃料ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向にその隙間内を移動して燃料ガス流路から排出される。
 本発明によれば、高温性能、高温無加湿下での運転性能、及び発電性能を向上させることができ、さらには、特に水分量の多い酸化剤ガス流路の下流部分の排水性及びガス拡散性を良好にして、常温域での電圧安定性を向上させることができる。
 各単セルの第1のセパレータが、冷却媒体流路の上流部分に対応する部分で同じ単セルの膜電極接合体に当接している場合には、冷却媒体流路を流れる冷却媒体によって酸化剤ガス流路の上流部分を効率的に冷却することができ、高温性能、高温無加湿下での運転性能、及び発電性能の更なる向上が可能である。
 酸化剤ガス流路内の水を酸化剤ガス流路から排出するための第1の水流路を各単セルの第1のセパレータと第1のガス拡散多孔体との間に設けた場合には、酸化剤ガス流路の排水性が向上し、その結果、燃料電池の発電効率及び常温域での電圧安定性が向上する。
 燃料ガス流路内の水を燃料ガス流路から排出するための第2の水流路を各単セルの第2のセパレータと第2のガス拡散多孔体との間に設けた場合には、燃料ガス流路の排水性が向上し、その結果、燃料電池の発電効率が向上する。

 第1実施形態
 以下、本発明を具体化した第1実施形態の燃料電池を図1~図6を参照して説明する。
 図6に示すように、燃料電池10は、多数の単セル12(図2参照)が積層されたスタック構造を有している。積層された単セル12は一対の集電板11の間に配置されている。2つの集電板11は一対の絶縁板13の間に配置されている。2つの絶縁板13は一対のエンドプレート15の間に配置されている。締め付けボルト17で締め付けることにより2つのエンドプレート15の間に単セル12、集電板11及び絶縁板13が挟まれている。
 燃料電池10には、酸化剤ガス管路系、燃料ガス管路系、及び冷却媒体管路系が接続されている。酸化剤ガス管路系は、酸化剤ガスとしての空気(酸素)を燃料電池10に対して供給及び排出するためのものであって、図6に示すように、燃料電池10の図示しない酸化剤ガス供給口に接続された酸化剤ガス供給管51と、燃料電池10の図示しない酸化剤ガス排出口に接続された酸化剤ガス排出管52とを備える。
 燃料ガス管路系は、燃料ガスとしての水素を燃料電池10に対して供給及び排出するためのものであって、燃料電池10の図示しない燃料ガス供給口に接続された燃料ガス供給管54と、燃料電池10の図示しない燃料ガス排出口に接続された燃料ガス排出管56とを備える。
 冷却媒体管路系は、冷却媒体としての水を燃料電池10に対して供給及び排出するためのものであって、燃料電池10の図示しない冷却媒体供給口に接続された冷却媒体供給管58と、燃料電池10の図示しない冷却媒体排出口に接続された冷却媒体排出管60とを備える。
 (単セル12)
 図2に示すように、各単セル12は、固体高分子電解質膜14がアノード16とカソード18の間に設けられた膜電極接合体(MEA)20を備えている。MEA20は、第1のセパレータ22と第2のセパレータ24との間に配置されている。第1のセパレータ22とMEA20との間には第1のガス拡散多孔体26が配置されている。第2のセパレータ24とMEA20との間には第2のガス拡散多孔体28が配置されている。
 MEA20においては、燃料極であるアノード16が電解質膜14の一方の面に配置され、酸素極であるカソード18が電解質膜14の他方の面に配置されている。
 電解質膜14は、湿潤状態で良好なプロトン伝導性を有する固体高分子材料から形成されている。そのような固体高分子材料の例としてはフッ素系の高分子膜(例えば、デュポン社製のナフィオン膜等)がある。
 アノード16は、電極触媒層16aとガス拡散層16bとを備える。カソード18は、電極触媒層18aとガス拡散層18bとを備える。電極触媒層16a,18aは電解質膜14と接触しており、白金微粒子を担持させた導電性カーボンブラックにより形成されている。ガス拡散層16b,18bは、電極触媒層16a,18aに積層されており、導電性を有するカーボンペーパーにより構成されている。電極触媒層16a,18aに含まれる白金は、プロトンと電子への水素の分離及び酸素とプロトンと電子から水を生成する反応を促進する。同様の働きをする触媒を白金の代わりに使用してもよい。また、ガス拡散層16b,18bは、十分なガス拡散性及び導電性を有してさえいればカーボンペーパー以外の材料から形成してもよく、例えば炭素繊維からなるカーボンクロス又はカーボンフェルトで形成してもよい。
 (第1のセパレータ22及び酸化剤ガス流路30)
 第1のセパレータ22はチタンからなり、導電性を有する。ただし、第1のセパレータ22の材質はチタンに限定されない。導電性を有する炭素系又は金属系のその他の材料から第1のセパレータ22を形成してもよい。図2に示すように、各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22とMEA20との間には酸化剤ガス流路30が形成されている。酸化剤ガス流路30は、燃料電池10に設けられた前記酸化剤ガス供給口及び前記酸化剤ガス排出口に対して、図示しないマニホールドホールを介して接続されている。
 図1に示すように、各第1のセパレータ22は、酸化剤ガス流路30の下流側に位置する大型の平板部32と、酸化剤ガス流路30の上流側に位置する小型の平板部34とを有する。各第1のセパレータ22の2つの平板部32,34は互いに平行であり、段差部33によって互いに一体に連結されている。図2に示すように、各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22の大型の平板部32は、同単セル12のMEA20と同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12のMEA20との間の略中間に位置している。各第1のセパレータ22の小型の平板部34は、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向、すなわち図2中に破線の矢印Uで示す第1の方向の長さが、同じ第1のセパレータ22の大型の平板部32のそれよりも短い。段差部33は、第1の方向Uに対して傾斜している。
 図1及び図5に示すように、各第1のセパレータ22には、第1の方向Uと平行に延びる複数の突条35が設けられている。各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22の突条35は、金型プレス成形により、同じ単セル12のMEA20に向かって突出するように形成されている。各第1のセパレータ22の突条35は、大型の平板部32の第1の方向Uの略中央から段差部33を横切って小型の平板部34の第1の方向Uの略中央まで延びている。
 各第1のセパレータ22の互いに隣り合う突条35同士は等ピッチで配置されることが望ましいが、場合によっては不等ピッチでもよい。
 突条35がプレス成形により形成されることより、各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22は、図5に示すように、その単セル12のMEA20に面する面とは反対側の面に、第1の方向Uと平行に延びる複数の溝36を有している。また、各第1のセパレータ22の互いに隣り合う突条35同士の間にはそれぞれ、図1及び図5に示すように第1の溝35bが形成されている。MEA20に面する各突条35の部分は、図1及び図5に示すように平坦な壁部35aとして形成されており、図3及び図5に示すように酸化剤ガス流路30の上流部分でMEA20のカソード18(ガス拡散層18b)に対して密接している。
 各酸化剤ガス流路30の上流部分は、MEA20に面する第1のセパレータ22の面に複数の第1の溝35bが設けられていることによって互いに独立した複数の溝流路として構成されている。各酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分には、第1のガス拡散多孔体26が配置されている。
 (第2のセパレータ24及び燃料ガス流路40)
 第2のセパレータ24はチタンからなり、導電性を有する。ただし、第2のセパレータ24の材質はチタンに限定されない。導電性を有する炭素系又は金属系のその他の材料から第2のセパレータ24を形成してもよい。
 図2に示すように、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24とMEA20との間には燃料ガス流路40が形成されている。本実施形態では、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と燃料ガス流路40を燃料ガスが流れる方向は互いに対向している。すなわち、酸化剤ガスと燃料ガスは互いに対向流となるように流れる。燃料ガス流路40は、燃料電池10に設けられた前記燃料ガス供給口及び前記燃料ガス排出口に対して、図示しないマニホールドホールを介して接続されている。
 図1に示すように、各第2のセパレータ24は、燃料ガス流路40の下流側に位置する大型の平板部42と、燃料ガス流路40の上流側に位置する小型の平板部44とを有する。各第2のセパレータ24の2つの平板部42,44は互いに平行であり、段差部43によって互いに一体に連結されている。図2に示すように、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24の大型の平板部42は、同単セル12のMEA20と同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12のMEA20との間の略中間に位置している。各第2のセパレータ24の小型の平板部44は、燃料ガス流路40を燃料ガスが流れる方向、すなわち図2中に破線の矢印Pで示す第2の方向の長さが、同じ第2のセパレータ24の大型の平板部42のそれよりも短い。段差部43は、第2の方向Pに対して傾斜している。なお、本実施形態では、第2の方向Pは第1の方向Uとは180度反対である。
 図2及び図3に示すように、各第2のセパレータ24には、第2の方向Pと平行に延びる複数の突条45が設けられている。各第2のセパレータ24に設けられている突条45の数及びピッチは、各第1のセパレータ22に設けられている突条35の数及びピッチと同じである。第1のセパレータ22と第2のセパレータ24は、突条35と突条45がそれぞれ互いに整合するように配置されている。
 各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24の突条45は、金型プレス成形により、同じ単セル12のMEA20に向かって突出するように形成されている。各第2のセパレータ24の突条45は、大型の平板部42の第2の方向Pの略中央から段差部43を横切って小型の平板部44の第2の方向Pの略中央まで延びている。
 突条45がプレス成形により形成されることより、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24は、図1に示すように、その単セル12のMEA20に面する面とは反対側の面に、第2の方向Pと平行に延びる複数の溝46を有している。また、各第2のセパレータ24の互いに隣り合う突条45同士の間にはそれぞれ、図2に示すように第2の溝45bが形成されている。
 MEA20に面する各突条45の部分は、図2及び図3に示すように平坦な壁部45aとして形成されており、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分でMEA20のアノード16(ガス拡散層16b)に対して密接している。
 各燃料ガス流路40の上流部分は、MEA20に面する第2のセパレータ24の面に複数の第2の溝45bが設けられていることによって互いに独立した複数の溝流路として構成されている。各燃料ガス流路40の下流部分には、第2のガス拡散多孔体28が配置されている。
 図2に示すように、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24の大型の平板部42は、同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12の第1のセパレータ22の大型の平板部32と密接して電気的に接続されている。
 又、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24の溝46は、同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12の第1のセパレータ22の溝36に対して、図3中に符号Aで示す部分でオーバーラップして連通している。
 (冷却媒体流路50)
 各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22と、同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12の第2のセパレータ24とによって、より具体的には第1のセパレータ22に設けられた溝36と第2のセパレータ24に設けられた溝46とによって冷却媒体流路50は形成されている。第1のセパレータ22の小型の平板部34と第2のセパレータ24の大型の平板部42との間の隙間が冷却媒体流路50の入口として機能し、第2のセパレータ24の小型の平板部44と第1のセパレータ22の大型の平板部32との間の隙間が冷却媒体流路50の出口として機能する。
 図3に示すように、各冷却媒体流路50の上流部分、すなわち溝36は、冷却媒体流路50の下流部分、すなわち溝46と比べて、冷却媒体流路50と隣接する酸化剤ガス流路30に面するMEA20の面に近接して位置する。換言すれば、各冷却媒体流路50の上流部分は、冷却媒体流路50を形成している第1及び第2のセパレータ22,24のうち第1のセパレータ22を備える単セル12のMEA20に近接して位置する。又、各冷却媒体流路50の下流部分、すなわち溝46は、冷却媒体流路50の上流部分、すなわち溝36と比べて、冷却媒体流路50と隣接する燃料ガス流路40に面するMEA20の面に近接して位置する。換言すれば、各冷却媒体流路50の下流部分は、冷却媒体流路50を形成している第1及び第2のセパレータ22,24のうち第2のセパレータ24を備える単セル12のMEA20に近接して位置する。
 冷却媒体流路50は、燃料電池10に設けられた前記冷却媒体供給口及び前記冷却媒体排出口に対して、図示しないマニホールドホールを介して接続されている。図3中に破線の矢印Sで示す冷却水等の冷却媒体が冷却媒体流路50を流れる方向は、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じである。すなわち、冷却媒体と酸化剤ガスは互いに平行流(コフロー)となるように流れる。
 上記のように冷却媒体流路50が形成されていることにより、冷却媒体流路50の上流部分では、酸化剤ガス流路30の上流部分に位置するカソード18の部分が効率よく冷却される一方、冷却媒体流路50の下流部分では、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分に位置するアノード16の部分が効率よく冷却されることになる。本実施形態ではこのように、カソード18とアノード16のそれぞれを全体に均等に冷却するのではなく、最も乾燥しやすい酸化剤ガス流路30の入口近傍、すなわち上流部分に位置するカソード19の部分を積極的に冷却することができる。
 (ガス拡散多孔体26,28)
 次に、ガス拡散多孔体26,28について説明する。図4は第1のガス拡散多孔体26の一部分を示す斜視図であるが、第2のガス拡散多孔体28も第1のガス拡散多孔体26と同一の構成を有する。
 各ガス拡散多孔体26,28は、図4に示すように、多数の六角形のリング部26a,28aが千鳥状に設けられたラスカットメタルにより形成されている。各ガス拡散多孔体26,28は、リング部26a,28aの貫通孔26b,28b)の軸線が前記第1の方向U又は第2の方向Pと交差して延びるように酸化剤ガス流路30又は燃料ガス流路40内に配置される。そのため、リング部26a,28aの貫通孔26b,28bであるガス拡散多孔体26,28のガス流路26c,28cを通過することによって、酸化剤ガス又は燃料ガスは酸化剤ガス流路30又は燃料ガス流路40内で拡散されることになる。
 各単セル12の第1のガス拡散多孔体26は、同じ単セル12のカソード18及び第1のセパレータ22に接触して両者を電気的に接続している。各単セル12の第2のガス拡散多孔体28は、同じ単セル12のアノード16及び第2のセパレータ24に接触して両者を電気的に接続している。
 次に、本実施形態の燃料電池10の作用について説明する。
 燃料電池10の発電時には、図2に示すように、酸化剤ガス流路30及び燃料ガス流路40をそれぞれ酸化剤ガス(本実施形態では空気)及び燃料ガス(本実施形態では水素ガス)が互いに対向流となるように通過する。又、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向に、冷却媒体(本実施形態では冷却水)が冷却媒体流路50を通過する。
 図3に示すように、冷却媒体は、第1のセパレータ22の小型の平板部34と第2のセパレータ24の大型の平板部42との間の隙間から冷却媒体流路50に入ってまず溝36を通過する。溝36を冷却媒体が通過することにより、酸化剤ガス流路30の上流部分に位置するカソード18の部分が、壁部35aを介して冷却される。図3中の矢印Qは、カソード18からの熱の移動方向を示している。
 続いて冷却媒体は溝46を通過する。溝46を冷却媒体が通過することにより、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分に位置するアノード16の部分が、壁部45aを介して冷却される。図3中の矢印Rは、アノード16からの熱の移動方向を示している。その後、冷却媒体は、第2のセパレータ24の小型の平板部44と第1のセパレータ22の大型の平板部32との間の隙間から冷却媒体流路50の外に出る。このように本実施形態では、酸化剤ガス流路30の上流部分に位置するカソード18の部分を、酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分に位置するカソード18の部分よりも積極的に冷却する。又、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分に位置するアノード16の部分を、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分に位置するアノード16の部分よりも積極的に冷却する。
 一般に、無加湿の燃料ガス及び酸化剤ガスを供給して燃料電池を運転した場合、すなわち、いわゆる無加湿運転の場合には、燃料電池10の各単セル12の面内で水分量分布の偏りが生じやすくなる。より具体的には、酸化剤ガス流路30の入口近傍(上流部分)は乾燥状態になりやすく、酸化剤ガス流路30の出口近傍(下流部分)は湿潤状態になりやすい。このため、各単セル12の面内で水分量の均一化を図る必要がある。
 本実施形態では上記のように、酸化剤ガス流路30の入口近傍(上流部分)を積極的に冷却することで燃料電池10の高温性能を向上させている。
 酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分では、発電による酸化剤ガス中の酸素の消費に伴って酸素濃度の低下が起こるとともに、カソード18上の反応で水が生成する。この生成水は、第1のガス拡散多孔体26のガス流路26cを通って酸化剤ガス流路30を流れる酸化剤ガス(酸化剤オフガス)により酸化剤ガス流路30の外に排出される。酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分に第1のガス拡散多孔体26が配置されているため、生成水によるガス拡散層18bにおけるガス拡散の阻害が抑制される。その結果、燃料電池10の発電性能は向上する。また、酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分の排水性が向上するために、常温域での電圧安定性が向上する。
 生成水の一部は、電解質膜14を透過して、アノード16の電極触媒層16a及びガス拡散層16b並びに燃料ガス流路40の第2のガス拡散多孔体28に浸透する。この浸透水は、第2のガス拡散多孔体28のガス流路28cを通って燃料ガス流路40を流れる燃料ガス(燃料オフガス)により燃料ガス流路40の外に排出される。
 本実施形態は、以下の効果を有する。
 (1) 本実施形態の燃料電池10の場合、酸化剤ガス流路30は、複数の溝流路として構成された上流部分と、ガス拡散多孔体26が配置された下流部分とを有する。燃料ガス流路40は、複数の溝流路として構成された上流部分と、ガス拡散多孔体28が配置された下流部分とを有する。各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22と同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12の第2のセパレータ24との間には冷却媒体流路50が形成されている。冷却媒体流路50を冷却媒体が流れる方向は、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じである。冷却媒体流路50の上流部分は、冷却媒体流路50の下流部分と比べて、冷却媒体流路50と隣接する酸化剤ガス流路に面するMEA20の面に近接して位置する。そのため本実施形態の燃料電池10によれば、高温性能、高温無加湿下での運転性能、及び発電性能が向上する。また、特に水分量の多い酸化剤ガス流路の下流部分の排水性及びガス拡散性が良好であることから、常温域での電圧安定性が向上する。高温無加湿下での運転性能及び発電性能が向上する結果、燃料電池10は小型化及び低コスト化が可能である。
 さらには、本実施形態の燃料電池10の場合、ガス拡散多孔体26,28が酸化剤ガス流路30及び燃料ガス流路40のそれぞれの下流部分にだけ配置されている。そのため、アノード16及びカソード18のそれぞれの全面に対応するようにガス拡散多孔体を配置した場合に比べて、燃料電池10の軽量化が可能である。
 (2) 本実施形態の燃料電池10の場合、各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22は、冷却媒体流路50の上流部分に対応する部分で同じ単セル12のMEA20のカソード18に当接している。そのため、冷却媒体流路50を流れる冷却媒体によって酸化剤ガス流路30の上流部分を効率的に冷却することができ、高温性能、高温無加湿下での運転性能、及び発電性能の更なる向上が可能である。
 第2実施形態
 次に、本発明の第2実施形態の燃料電池を、図7(a)、図7(b)及び図8を参照して説明する。第2実施形態の燃料電池は、図4に示す第1及び第2のガス拡散多孔体26,28の代わりに図7(a)に示す第1及び第2のガス拡散多孔体70,80が使用されている点で第1実施形態の燃料電池10と異なる。以下、第1実施形態の燃料電池10の構成と同一の又は対応する第2実施形態の燃料電池の構成(ただし第1及び第2のガス拡散多孔体70,80を除く)には第1実施形態の説明で使用したのと同一の符号を付す。
 図7(a)に示すように、第1及び第2のガス拡散多孔体70,80は、断面略S字状の多数の切り起こし部を有する平板部72,82を備える。各切り起こし部は、平板部72,82と一体に形成されており、第1の突部74,84及び第2の突部76,86を形成している。第1の突部74,84は、平板部72,82の一方の面から突出した切り起こし部の一部分であって、扁平な台形状の断面を有する。第1の突部74,84の断面形状は半円形状であってもよい。第2の突部76,86は、平板部72,82の他方の面から突出した切り起こし部の別の一部分であって、半円形状の断面を有する。第2の突部76,86の断面形状は台形状であってもよい。第2の突部76,86の高さは、第1の突部74,84の高さに比べて小さい。
 図8に示すように、第1のガス拡散多孔体70は、第1の突部74がカソード18のガス拡散層18bと接触してかつ第2の突部76が第1のセパレータ22に接触するようにして酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分に配置されている。同様に、第2のガス拡散多孔体80は、第1の突部84がアノード16のガス拡散層16bと接触してかつ第2の突部86が第2のセパレータ24に接触するようにして燃料ガス流路40の下流部分に配置されている。
 図7(a)及び図8に示すように、第1のセパレータ22と第1のガス拡散多孔体70との間、より正確には第1のガス拡散多孔体70の平板部72との間には、第2の突部76の高さと同じ幅の隙間が形成されている。この隙間は、酸化剤ガス流路30内の水を酸化剤ガス流路30から排出するための第1の水流路78として機能する。すなわち、酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分は、平板部72によって第1の水流路78とそれ以外の部分に区画されている。第1の水流路78は、第1の突部74の切り起こし形成に伴って生じる凹所75を通じて酸化剤ガス流路30のそれ以外の部分と連通している。第1の水流路78の幅は例えば5μm~30μmであって、酸化剤ガス流路30のそれ以外の部分の幅、例えば100μm~500μmよりも小さい。カソード18上の反応で生成した水は、毛管作用によって凹所75を通って第1の水流路78に移動する。そして、酸化剤ガスが酸化剤ガス流路30を第1の方向Uに流れるのに伴ってそれと同じ方向、すなわち図7(b)中の矢印方向に第1の水流路78内を移動して酸化剤ガス流路30から排出される。
 同様に、第2のセパレータ24と第2のガス拡散多孔体80との間、より正確には第2のガス拡散多孔体80の平板部82との間には、第2の突部86の高さと同じ幅の隙間が形成されている。この隙間は、燃料ガス流路40内の水を燃料ガス流路40から排出するための第2の水流路88として機能する。すなわち、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分は、平板部82によって第2の水流路88とそれ以外の部分に区画されている。第2の水流路88は、第1の突部84の切り起こし形成に伴って生じる凹所85を通じて燃料ガス流路40のそれ以外の部分と連通している。第2の水流路88の幅は例えば5μm~30μmであって、燃料ガス流路40のそれ以外の部分の幅、例えば100μm~500μmよりも小さい。カソード18上の反応で生成した後に電解質膜14を透過して燃料ガス流路40に浸透した水は、毛管作用によって凹所85を通って第2の水流路88に移動する。そして、燃料ガスが燃料ガス流路40を第2の方向Pに流れるのに伴ってそれと同じ方向、すなわち図7(b)中の矢印方向とは反対の方向に第2の水流路88内を移動して燃料ガス流路40から排出される。
 第2実施形態は、以下の効果を有する。
 (1) 第2実施形態の燃料電池の場合、各単セル12の第1のセパレータ22と第1のガス拡散多孔体70との間に第1の水流路78が設けられており、酸化剤ガス流路30内の水は、酸化剤ガスが酸化剤ガス流路30を流れるのに伴って、酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向に第1の水流路78内を移動して酸化剤ガス流路30から排出される。かくして酸化剤ガス流路30の排水性は向上する。その結果、酸化剤ガス流路30を流れる酸化剤ガスがカソード18の電極触媒層18aにまで適正に拡散して安定供給される。また、酸化剤ガス流路30の圧力損失が低下する。これらにより、燃料電池の発電効率は向上する。また、カソード18上の反応で生成した水の滞留が起こりやすい常温域での電圧安定性も向上する。
 (2) 第2実施形態の燃料電池の場合、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24と第2のガス拡散多孔体80との間に第2の水流路88が設けられており、燃料ガス流路40内の水は、燃料ガスが燃料ガス流路40を流れるのに伴って、燃料ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向に第2の水流路88内を移動して燃料ガス流路40から排出される。かくして燃料ガス流路40の排水性は向上する。その結果、燃料ガス流路40を流れる燃料ガスがアノード16の電極触媒層16aにまで適正に拡散して安定供給される。また、燃料ガス流路40の圧力損失が低下する。これらにより、燃料電池の発電効率は向上する。また、アノード16の電極触媒層16aへの燃料ガスの供給が欠乏したときに生じる電位上昇が原因で電極触媒層16aに腐食が起こるのを回避することもできる。
 第3実施形態
 次に、本発明の第3実施形態の燃料電池を、第1実施形態の燃料電池10と異なる点を中心にして、図9及び図10を参照して説明する。
 第1実施形態の燃料電池10は、第2のセパレータ24に設けられた突条45の壁部45aがMEA20のアノード16に対して接触する構成を有している。これに対し、第3実施形態の燃料電池は、図9に示すように、第2のセパレータ24の突条45の壁部45aがアノード16から離間している。そして、壁部45aとアノード16との間の隙間、すなわち燃料ガス流路40の上流部分には、第3のガス拡散多孔体29が配置されている。第3のガス拡散多孔体29は、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分にある第2のガス拡散多孔体28とは厚さが異なるだけで、第2のガス拡散多孔体28と同様、体多数の六角形のリング部が千鳥状に設けられた構成を有している。各単セル12の第3のガス拡散多孔体29は、同じ単セル12のアノード16及び第2のセパレータ24に接触して両者を電気的に接続している。
 したがって、第3実施形態の燃料電池では、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分に第2のガス拡散多孔体28が設けられているだけでなく、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分には第3のガス拡散多孔体29が設けられている。また、第1実施形態の燃料電池10と同様、各燃料ガス流路30の上流部分では、MEA20に面する第2のセパレータ24の面に複数の第2の溝45bが設けられている。
 第1実施形態の燃料電池10と同様、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と燃料ガス流路40を燃料ガスが流れる方向は互いに対向している。
 また、各単セル12の第2のセパレータ24の溝46は、同単セル12に隣り合う単セル12の第1のセパレータ22の溝36に対して、図10中に符合Aで示す部分でオーバーラップして連通しており、これにより、冷却媒体流路50が形成されている。第1実施形態の燃料電池10と同様、冷却水等の冷却媒体が冷却媒体流路50を流れる方向は、酸化剤ガス流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じである。
 第3実施形態では、第1実施形態の(1)及び(2)の利点に加えて、以下の利点を有する。
 (1) 第3実施形態の燃料電池の場合、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分に第2のガス拡散多孔体28が設けられているだけでなく、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分には第3のガス拡散多孔体29が設けられている。そのため、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分だけでなく上流部分でも、燃料ガスを均一に拡散させることができる。カソード18上の反応で生成した後に電解質膜14を透過して燃料ガス流路40に浸透した水は、第3のガス拡散多孔体29及び第2のガス拡散多孔体28を通過して流れる燃料ガス(燃料オフガス)により燃料ガス流路40の外に排出される。
 上記実施形態は次のように変更しても良い。
 ・ 第3実施形態において、燃料ガス流路40を燃料ガスが流れる方向を、酸化剤流路30を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向、すなわち第1の方向Uと同じに変更してもよい。この場合、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分に第2のガス拡散多孔体28が配置され、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分に第3のガス拡散多孔体29が配置されることになる。また、第2のセパレータ24に設けられた第2の溝45bは、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分に位置することになる。この変更例の場合も、第3実施形態と同様の効果を得ることができる。
 ・ 上記の変更例に、次の変更をさらに加えて図11に示すような構成としてもよい。すなわち、第2のセパレータ24の第2の溝45bを省略する。また、第3のガス拡散多孔体29を省略して、その代わりに第2のガス拡散多孔体28を、燃料ガス流路40の上流部分及び下流部分の両方に位置するような大きさに変更する。この場合も、第3実施形態と同様の効果を得ることができる。
 ・ 前記各実施形態では、冷却媒体として冷却水を使用したが、冷却水以外の冷却媒体、例えばオイル、アルコール等を使用してもよい。
 ・ 第2実施形態では、酸化剤ガス流路30の下流部分は、第1のガス拡散多孔体70によって第1のセパレータ22と第1のガス拡散多孔体70との間の第1の水流路78とそれ以外の部分に区画されている。第1の水流路78の幅は、5μm~30μmの範囲に限られるものでなく、10μm~50μmの範囲であってもよい。また、酸化剤ガス流路30のそれ以外の部分の幅は、100μm~500μmの範囲に限られるものでなく、30μm~1000μmの範囲であってもよい。
 ・ 第2実施形態では、燃料ガス流路40の下流部分は、第2のガス拡散多孔体80によって第2のセパレータ24と第2のガス拡散多孔体80との間の第2の水流路88とそれ以外の部分に区画されている。第2の水流路88の幅は、5μm~30μmの範囲に限られるものでなく、10μm~50μmの範囲であってもよい。また、燃料ガス流路30のそれ以外の部分の幅は、100μm~500μmの範囲に限られるものでなく、30μm~1000μmの範囲であってもよい。

  1.  積層された複数の単セルを有する燃料電池であって、各単セルは、固体高分子電解質膜の両面にそれぞれ電極を配置した膜電極接合体と、前記膜電極接合体を間に挟んで配置される第1のセパレータ及び第2のセパレータとを備え、各単セルの第1のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には酸化剤ガス流路が形成されており、各単セルの第2のセパレータと膜電極接合体との間には燃料ガス流路が形成されており、各単セルの酸化剤ガス流路を酸化剤ガスが流れる方向は、同じ単セルの燃料ガス流路を燃料ガスが流れる方向と対向しており、その燃料電池の特徴とするところは、

  4.  各単セルの第1のセパレータは、冷却媒体流路の上流部分に対応する部分で同じ単セルの膜電極接合体に当接している、請求項1乃至請求項3のうちいずれか1項に記載の燃料電池。
  5.  各単セルの第1のセパレータと第1のガス拡散多孔体との間には、酸化剤ガス流路内の水を酸化剤ガス流路から排出するための第1の水流路が設けられており、第1の水流路内の水は、酸化剤ガスが酸化剤ガス流路を流れるのに伴って、酸化剤ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向に移動して酸化剤ガス流路から排出される、請求項1乃至請求項4のうちいずれか1項に記載の燃料電池。
  6.  各単セルの第2のセパレータと第2のガス拡散多孔体との間には、燃料ガス流路内の水を燃料ガス流路から排出するための第2の水流路が設けられており、第2の水流路内の水は、燃料ガスが燃料ガス流路を流れるのに伴って、燃料ガスが流れる方向と同じ方向に移動して燃料ガス流路から排出される、請求項1乃至請求項5のうちいずれか1項に記載の燃料電池。
