 本発明は上記のような事情に基づいて完成されたものであって、使用に伴う照明光の色味の変化を抑制することを目的とする。

 本発明の照明装置は、光源と、前記光源から発せられた光を透過または反射する光学部材とを備え、前記光学部材は、第1の波長領域の光が照射されるのに伴って透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少するのに対し、第2の波長領域の光が照射されるのに伴って透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に増加する光学特性を有していて、前記光源は、主発光波長が前記第1の波長領域に存する第1光源と、主発光波長が前記第2の波長領域に存する第2光源とからなる。
 このようにすれば、光源からの光が照射されることに伴って光学部材の光学特性が経時的に変化した場合であっても、光学部材は、第1光源からの光によって透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少する一方で、第2光源からの光によって透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に増加するので、全体として色度の変化が相殺され、もって透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びることが避けられる。これにより、当該照明装置の照明光の色味が使用に伴って変化するのを抑制することができる。
 本発明の実施態様として、次の構成が好ましい。
(1)前記第1光源は、主発光波長が422nmを上回るのに対し、前記第2光源は、主発光波長が422nmを下回るものとされる。このようにすれば、光学部材として、照射される光の波長が422nmを上回ると透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に減少するのに対し、照射される光の波長が422nmを下回ると透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に増加するものを用いた場合に好適とされる。
(2)前記第1光源は、主発光波長が425nm~500nmの範囲に存するのに対し、前記第2光源は、主発光波長が300nm~420nmの範囲に存するものとされる。このようにすれば、第1光源の主発光波長の下限値及び第2光源の主発光波長の上限値が共に上記した閾値である422nmを避けた値とされ、さらには第1光源の主発光波長の上限値及び第2光源の下限値がそれぞれ光学部材における透過光または反射光における色度を変化させるのに十分な値とされていることから、第1光源及び第2光源からの光が照射されることで光学部材における透過光または反射光の色度の変化がより確実に相殺される。従って、光学部材における透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びる事態をより確実に回避することができる。
(3)前記第2光源は、主発光波長が380nm~420nmの範囲に存するものとされる。このようにすれば、第2光源における主発光波長が、近紫外線の波長領域(200nm~380nm)を含まない、可視光線の波長領域とされているから、第2光源からの光を当該照明装置の照明光として有効に利用することができ、もって照明光の輝度向上を図る上で好適となる。
(4)前記第2光源は、主発光波長が約350nmとされる。このようにすれば、第2光源からの光によって光学部材における透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に効率的に増加するから、第2光源の発光光量が少なく済む。従って、例えば、第1光源と第2光源とで発光光の色度が互いに異なるとともに、第1光源における発光光の色度が当該照明装置の照明光において支配的な場合には、上記照明光に占める第2光源の発光光量の比率が下がることで、第2光源からの光が照明光の色味に与える影響を軽減することができる。
(5)前記第1光源は、主発光波長が約450nmとされる。このようにすれば、例えば第1光源としてLEDを用いた場合、主発光波長が約450nmのLEDチップを有するLEDの調達コストが低くなるので、当該照明装置に係る製造コストの低減を図る上で有用となる。
(6)前記第1光源及び前記第2光源は、共にLEDからなる。このようにすれば、高輝度化及び低消費電力化などを図ることができる。
(7)前記第1光源は、主発光波長が前記第1の波長領域に存するLED素子と、前記LED素子からの光により励起されて発光する蛍光体とから構成される。このようにすれば、蛍光体の種類や含有量などを適宜調整することで、第1光源の発光光の色度を適切なものとすることができる。
(8)前記第1光源が有する前記LED素子は、青色光を発光する青色LED素子とされるのに対し、前記第1光源が有する前記蛍光体は、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体との少なくともいずれか一方からなる。このようにすれば、第1光源は、全体として概ね白色光を発するものとされるから、当該照明装置の照明光に係る色度を白色とする場合に好適とされる。また、第1光源における蛍光体の種類や含有量などを選択することで、第1光源の発光光に係る色度を容易に調整することができるから、第2光源の発光光に係る色度に応じて照明光のホワイトバランスを適切なものとすることが可能とされる。
(9)前記第2光源は、主発光波長が前記第2の波長領域に存するLED素子と、前記LED素子からの光により励起されて発光する蛍光体とから構成される。このようにすれば、蛍光体の種類や含有量などを適宜調整することで、第2光源の発光光の色度を適切なものとすることができる。
(10)前記第2光源が有する前記LED素子は、近紫外線または可視光線における紫色光を発する紫LED素子とされるのに対し、前記第2光源が有する前記蛍光体は、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、青色光を発光する青色蛍光体、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体、及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体と、青色光を発光する青色蛍光体及び黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体の組とのうちのいずれか一つからなる。このようにすれば、第2光源は、全体として概ね白色光を発するものとされるから、当該照明装置の照明光に係る色度を白色とする場合に好適とされる。また、第2光源における蛍光体の種類や含有量などを選択することで、第2光源の発光光に係る色度を容易に調整することができるから、第1光源の発光光に係る色度に応じて照明光のホワイトバランスを適切なものとすることが可能とされる。
(11)前記第2光源は、前記第1光源よりも設置数が相対的に少ないものとされる。このようにすれば、当該照明装置の照明光に占める第2光源の発光光量の比率が低いものとなる。従って、例えば、第1光源と第2光源とで発光光の色度が互いに異なるとともに、第1光源における発光光の色度が当該照明装置の照明光において支配的な場合には、上記照明光に占める第2光源の発光光量の比率が下がることで、第2光源からの光が照明光の色味に与える影響を軽減することができる。
(12)前記第1光源及び前記第2光源は、前記光学部材の辺に沿って複数ずつ並列するとともに、隣り合う前記第2光源の間に前記第1光源が複数で且つ同数ずつ介在するよう配されている。このようにすれば、設置数が互いに異なる第1光源及び第2光源を、その並列方向について設置密度にムラが無くなるよう配置しているから、当該照明装置における照明光にも色ムラが生じ難いものとなる。
(13)前記第1光源及び前記第2光源は、前記光学部材の辺に沿って並列して配されることで光源群を構成しており、前記光源群に対して端部が対向状に配されるとともに、前記光源群からの光を光出射側へ導く導光部材が備えられている。このようにすれば、光源群から発せられた光は、導光部材の端部に入射されると、導光部材内を伝播された後、光出射側へ向けて出射されることで、当該照明装置の照明光にムラが生じ難いものとされる。
(14)前記光源群は、前記導光部材における一方の端部に対して対向状に配される第1の光源群と、前記導光部材における前記一方の端部とは反対側の他方の端部に対して対向状に配される第2の光源群とからなり、前記第1の光源群に含まれる前記第2光源と、前記第2の光源群に含まれる前記第2光源とが、前記光源群の並列方向についてオフセットして配されている。このようにすれば、第1の光源群に含まれる第2光源からの光と、第2の光源群に含まれる第2光源からの光とが、導光部材内において光源群の並列方向について分散されることになる。従って、例えば、第1光源と第2光源とで発光光の色度が互いに異なるとともに、第1光源における発光光の色度が当該照明装置の照明光において支配的な場合において、当該照明装置の照明光にムラが生じるのを効果的に防ぐことができる。
(15)前記第1光源及び前記第2光源を収容するとともに光出射側に開口する開口部を有するシャーシが備えられており、前記光学部材には、前記開口部を覆う形で配されるとともに前記第1光源及び前記第2光源からの光を透過する透光性光学部材が含まれている。このようにすれば、シャーシ内に収容された第1光源及び第2光源から発せられた光は、開口部を覆う形で配される透光性光学部材を透過してから外部へと出射される。この透光性光学部材の透過光が特定の色味を帯びることが避けられるから、当該照明装置の照明光の色味が使用に伴って変化するのを好適に抑制することができる。
(16)前記透光性光学部材には、透過光に集光作用を付与するプリズムシートが含まれている。このようにすれば、プリズムシートは、透過光に集光作用を付与するものであるため、仮に透過光が特定の色味を帯びた場合にはその色味がより目立つ傾向にある。その点、本発明によれば、第1光源及び第2光源によってプリズムシートの透過光が特定の色味を帯びるのが回避されているので、一層効果的である。
(17)前記第1光源及び前記第2光源を収容するとともに光出射側に開口する開口部を有するシャーシが備えられており、前記光学部材には、前記シャーシの内面に沿って延在する形で配されるとともに前記第1光源及び前記第2光源からの光を光出射側へ向けて反射する反射性光学部材が含まれている。このようにすれば、シャーシ内に収容された第1光源及び第2光源から発せられた光は、シャーシの内面に沿って延在する形で配される反射性光学部材によって光出射側へ向けて反射されることで出射が促される。この反射性光学部材の反射光が特定の色味を帯びることが避けられるから、当該照明装置の照明光の色味が使用に伴って変化するのを好適に抑制することができる。
(18)前記光学部材は、ポリエステル樹脂からなる。このようにすれば、第1光源及び第2光源によってポリエステル樹脂からなる光学部材の透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びる事態を好適に回避することができる。
(19)前記光学部材は、PET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート)からなる。このようにすれば、PETは、発色団としてカルボニル基を有しており、このカルボニル基が光学特性を変化させる一因となっている可能性があるものの、第1光源及び第2光源によって光学部材の透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びる事態を好適に回避することができる。
 次に、上記課題を解決するために、本発明の表示装置は、上記記載の照明装置と、前記照明装置からの光を利用して表示を行う表示パネルとを備える。
 このような表示装置によると、表示パネルに対して光を供給する照明装置が、使用に伴う照明光の色味の変化が抑制されたものであるから、表示品質の優れた表示を実現することが可能となる。
 前記表示パネルとしては液晶パネルを例示することができる。このような表示装置は液晶表示装置として、種々の用途、例えばテレビやパソコンのディスプレイ等に適用でき、特に大型画面用として好適である。
(発明の効果)
 本発明によれば、使用に伴う照明光の色味の変化を抑制することができる。

 <実施形態1>
 本発明の実施形態1を図1から図8によって説明する。本実施形態では、液晶表示装置10について例示する。なお、各図面の一部にはX軸、Y軸及びZ軸を示しており、各軸方向が各図面で示した方向となるように描かれている。また、図3及び図4に示す上側を表側とし、同図下側を裏側とする。
 本実施形態に係るテレビ受信装置TVは、図1に示すように、液晶表示装置10と、当該液晶表示装置10を挟むようにして収容する表裏両キャビネットCa,Cbと、電源Pと、チューナーTと、スタンドSとを備えて構成される。液晶表示装置(表示装置)10は、全体として横長(長手)の方形状(矩形状)をなし、縦置き状態で収容されている。この液晶表示装置10は、図2に示すように、表示パネルである液晶パネル11と、外部光源であるバックライト装置(照明装置)12とを備え、これらが枠状のベゼル13などにより一体的に保持されるようになっている。
 液晶パネル11は、図2に示すように、平面に視て横長(長手)の方形状(矩形状)をなしており、一対のガラス基板が所定のギャップを隔てた状態で貼り合わせられるとともに、両ガラス基板間に液晶が封入された構成とされる。一方のガラス基板には、互いに直交するソース配線とゲート配線とに接続されたスイッチング素子(例えばTFT)と、そのスイッチング素子に接続された画素電極、さらには配向膜等が設けられ、他方のガラス基板には、R(赤色),G(緑色),B(青色)等の各着色部が所定配列で配置されたカラーフィルタや対向電極、さらには配向膜等が設けられている。なお、両基板の外側には偏光板が配されている。
 バックライト装置12は、図2に示すように、表側、つまり光出射側(液晶パネル11側)に開口する開口部14cを有した略箱型をなすシャーシ14と、シャーシ14の開口部14cを覆う形で配される透過性光学部材15と、次述する導光部材19を表側から押さえるフレーム16とを備えている。さらにはシャーシ14内には、光源であるLED(Light Emitting Diode:発光ダイオード)17が実装されたLED基板(光源基板)18と、LED17からの光を導光して透過性光学部材15(液晶パネル11、光出射側)へと導く導光部材19とが収容されている。そして、このバックライト装置12は、その長辺側の両端部に、LED17を有するLED基板18をそれぞれ備えるとともに、両端側に配されたLED基板18間に挟まれた中央側に導光部材19を配置してなる、いわゆるエッジライト型(サイドライト型)とされている。以下では、バックライト装置12の各構成部品について詳しく説明する。
 シャーシ14は、例えばアルミニウム板や電気亜鉛めっき綱板(SECC)などの金属板からなり、図2から図4に示すように、液晶パネル11と同様に横長の方形状をなす底板14aと、底板14aにおける各辺(一対の長辺及び一対の短辺)の外端からそれぞれ表側に向けて立ち上がる側板14bとからなる。シャーシ14(底板14a)は、その長辺方向がX軸方向(水平方向)と一致し、短辺方向がY軸方向(鉛直方向)と一致している。また、側板14bには、フレーム16及びベゼル13がねじ止め可能とされる。
 透光性光学部材15は、図2に示すように、液晶パネル11及びシャーシ14と同様に平面に視て横長の方形状をなしている。透光性光学部材15は、導光部材19の表側(光出射側)に載せられていて液晶パネル11と導光部材19との間に介在して配される。透光性光学部材15は、光透過率が光反射率及び光吸収率のいずれよりも十分に大きな値を持つものであり、具体的には光透過率が90%以上とされていて照射される光の殆どを透過する。透光性光学部材15は、裏側(導光部材19側、光出射側とは反対側)に配される拡散板15aと、表側(液晶パネル11側、光出射側)に配される光学シート15bとから構成される。拡散板15aは、所定の厚みを持つほぼ透明な合成樹脂製で板状をなす透光性基材内に拡散粒子を多数分散して設けた構成とされ、透過する光を拡散させる機能を有する。光学シート15bは、拡散板15aと比べると板厚が薄いシート状をなしており、3枚が積層して配されている。具体的な光学シート15bとしては、例えば拡散シート20、プリズムシート21、反射型偏光シート22が用いられる。なお、図3及び図4では、都合上3枚の光学シート15bを1枚に簡略化して図示している。このうち、最も裏側に配される拡散シート20は、ほぼ透明な合成樹脂製でシート状をなす透光性基材内に拡散粒子を多数分散して設けた構成とされ、透過する光を拡散させる機能を有する。最も表側に配される反射型偏光シート22は、例えば屈折率の互いに異なる層を交互に積層した多層構造を有しており、導光部材19からの光のうちp波を透過させ、s波を導光部材19側へ反射させる構成とされる。導光部材19側に戻されたs波は、シャーシ14内にて反射されることでs波とp波に分離されてから再び反射型偏光シート22へと向かうので、光の利用効率(輝度)に優れる。
 光学シート15bのうちプリズムシート21の構成について詳しく説明する。プリズムシート21は、図6に示すように、透光性に優れたシート状の透光性基材21aと、透光性基材における板面に積層して形成されるプリズム層(光学機能層)21bとから構成されており、透過光に対して集光作用を付与することが可能とされる。プリズム層21bは、透光性基材21aに対して表側(光出射側、液晶パネル11側)に配されており、逆に透光性基材21aは、プリズム層21bに対して裏側(光出射側とは反対側)に配されている。透光性基材21aは、ほぼ透明な横長のシート状をなしており、表面が概ね平滑なものとされる。一方、プリズム層21bは、断面略三角形状のプリズム21b1を多数個並列配置してなり、各プリズム21b1が透光性基材21aの一辺に並行して延在する形態とされ、且つ各プリズム21b1の並列方向が同プリズム21b1の延在方向と略直交するものとされる。プリズムシート21を透過する光は、プリズム層21bをなす各プリズム21b1にて適宜に屈折または反射されることで、より多くが正面方向へ向かうものとされる。透光性基材21aは、例えば、ポリエチレン樹脂、より具体的にはPET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート:Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate)からなる。プリズム層21bは、非ハロゲン化アクリル系樹脂からなる。
 フレーム16は、図2に示すように、導光部材19の外周端部に沿って延在する枠状(額縁状)に形成されており、導光部材19の外周端部をほぼ全周にわたって表側から押さえることが可能とされる。このフレーム16は、合成樹脂製とされるとともに、表面が例えば黒色を呈する形態とされることで、遮光性を有するものとされる。フレーム16のうち両長辺部分における裏側の面、つまり導光部材19及びLED基板18(LED17)との対向面には、図3に示すように、光を反射させる第1反射シート23がそれぞれ取り付けられている。第1反射シート23は、フレーム16の長辺部分におけるほぼ全長にわたって延在する大きさを有しており、導光部材19におけるLED17と対向状をなす端部に直接当接されるとともに導光部材19の上記端部とLED基板18とを一括して表側から覆うものとされる。また、フレーム16は、液晶パネル11における外周端部を裏側から受けることができる。
 LED17は、図2及び図3に示すように、LED基板18に固着される基板部上にLEDチップを樹脂材により封止した構成とされる。なお、LED17に関しては後に詳しく説明する。LED基板18は、表面が光の反射性に優れた白色を呈する合成樹脂製(ガラスエポキシ樹脂など)とされ、図2及び図5に示すように、シャーシ14の長辺方向(導光部材19におけるLED17側の端部、X軸方向)に沿って延在する、長手の板状をなしており、その板面をX軸方向及びZ軸方向に並行させた姿勢、すなわち液晶パネル11及び導光部材19(透光性光学部材15)の板面と直交させた姿勢でシャーシ14内に収容されている。つまり、このLED基板18は、板面における長辺方向がX軸方向と、短辺方向がZ軸方向とそれぞれ一致し、さらには板面と直交する板厚方向がY軸方向と一致した姿勢とされる。
 LED基板18は、図2,図3及び図5に示すように、Y軸方向について導光部材19を挟んだ位置に対をなして配されており、詳しくは導光部材19とシャーシ14における長辺側の各側板14bとの間に介在するようそれぞれ配され、シャーシ14に対してはZ軸方向に沿って表側から収容されるようになっている。LED基板18の板面のうち、内側、つまり導光部材19側を向いた面(導光部材19との対向面)には、複数(図5では27個)のLED17がLED基板18の長辺方向(透光性光学部材15の長辺方向、X軸方向)に沿って間欠的に並列して配されており、この一列に並列したLED17によりLED群17Gが構成されている。LED群17GをなすLED17は、LED基板18における導光部材19側を向いた面に表面実装されており、ここが実装面とされている。LED基板18の実装面には、X軸方向に沿って延在するとともにLED群17Gを横切って隣り合うLED17同士を直列接続する、金属膜(銅箔など)からなる配線パターン(図示せず)が形成されており、この配線パターンの両端部に形成された端子部が外部の駆動回路に接続されることで、駆動電力を各LED17に供給することが可能とされる。このLED基板18は、板面の片面のみが実装面とされる片面実装タイプとされている。X軸方向について隣り合うLED17間の間隔、つまりLED17の配列ピッチは、ほぼ等しいものとされる。
 一対のLED基板18は、図3及び図5に示すように、実装面とは反対側の板面がシャーシ14における長辺側の一対の側板14bの内面に接する形でそれぞれ取り付けられているので、両LED基板18にそれぞれ実装された各LED17の発光面が対向状をなすとともに、各LED17における光軸がY軸方向とほぼ一致する。言い換えると、一対のLED基板18に実装された各LED17は、それぞれ導光部材19におけるY軸方向の両端部(長辺側の両端部)に対してそれぞれ対向状に配されている。一対のLED基板18のうち、導光部材19における一方(図3では左側、図5では下側)の長辺側端部に対して対向状をなすLED基板18上に並列配置された複数のLED17が第1のLED群17G1を構成するのに対し、導光部材19における他方(図3では右側、図5では上側)の長辺側端部に対して対向状をなすLED基板18上に並列配置された複数のLED17が第2のLED群17G2を構成している。なお、LED基板18に用いる素材としては、例えばシャーシ14と同じアルミ系材料などの金属材料とし、その表面に絶縁層を介して配線パターンを形成された構成とすることも可能である。
 導光部材19は、屈折率が空気よりも十分に高く且つほぼ透明な(透光性に優れた)合成樹脂材料(例えばアクリルなど)からなる。導光部材19は、図2に示すように、液晶パネル11及びシャーシ14と同様に平面に視て横長の方形状をなす板状とされており、その板面における長辺方向がX軸方向と、短辺方向がY軸方向とそれぞれ一致し、且つ板面と直交する板厚方向がZ軸方向と一致している。導光部材19は、図3に示すように、シャーシ14内において液晶パネル11及び透光性光学部材15の直下位置に配されており、シャーシ14における長辺側の両端部に配された対をなすLED基板18間にY軸方向について挟み込まれる形で配されている。従って、LED17(LED基板18)と導光部材19との並び方向がY軸方向と一致するのに対して、透光性光学部材15(液晶パネル11)と導光部材19との並び方向がZ軸方向と一致しており、両並び方向が互いに直交するものとされる。そして、導光部材19は、LED17からY軸方向に向けて発せられた光を導入するとともに、その光を内部で伝播させつつ透光性光学部材15側(表側、光出射側)へ向くよう立ち上げて出射させる機能を有する。この導光部材19は、シャーシ14の底板14aにおいてその短辺方向の中央位置に配されていることから、底板14aにおける短辺方向の中央部分により裏側から支持されていると言える。なお、導光部材19は、上記した透光性光学部材15よりも一回り大きく形成されており、その外周端部が透光性光学部材15の外周端面よりも外側に張り出すとともに既述したフレーム16により押さえられるものとされる(図3)。
 導光部材19は、図3及び図4に示すように、シャーシ14の底板14a及び透光性光学部材15の各板面に沿って延在する略平板状をなしており、その板面がX軸方向及びY軸方向に並行するものとされる。導光部材19の板面のうち、表側を向いた面が内部の光を透光性光学部材15及び液晶パネル11に向けて出射させる光出射面19aとなっている。導光部材19における板面に対して隣り合う外周端面のうち、X軸方向に沿って長手状をなす長辺側の両端面は、図3に示すように、それぞれLED17(LED基板18)と所定の空間を空けて対向状をなしており、これらがLED17から発せられた光が入射される光入射面19bとなっている。このLED17と光入射面19bとの間に保有される空間の表側には、既述した第1反射シート23が配されているのに対し、同空間の裏側には、第1反射シート23との間で同空間を挟み込む形で第2反射シート24が配されている。両反射シート23,24は、上記空間に加えて導光部材19におけるLED17側の端部及びLED17をも挟み込む形で配されている。これにより、LED17からの光を両反射シート23,24間で繰り返し反射することで、光入射面19bに対して効率的に入射させることができる。また、光入射面19bは、X軸方向及びZ軸方向に沿って並行する面とされ、光出射面19aに対して略直交する面とされる。また、LED17と光入射面19bとの並び方向は、Y軸方向と一致しており、光出射面19aに並行している。
 導光部材19の板面のうち、光出射面19aとは反対側の面19cには、図3及び図4に示すように、導光部材19内の光を反射して表側へ立ち上げることが可能な反射性光学部材(反射シート)25がその全域を覆う形で設けられている。言い換えると、反射性光学部材25は、シャーシ14の底板14aと導光部材19との間に挟まれた形で配されている。反射性光学部材25は、導光部材19及び透光性光学部材15と同様に平面に視て横長な方形状をなしており、その長辺方向及び短辺方向も導光部材19及び透光性光学部材15と同一とされる。反射性光学部材25は、光反射率が光透過率及び光吸収率のいずれよりも十分に大きな値を持つものであり、具体的には光反射率が90%以上とされていて照射される光の殆どを反射する。この反射性光学部材25は、合成樹脂材料に白色の顔料を分散配合することで表面が光の反射性に優れた白色を呈するものとされており、その具体的な合成樹脂材料としては、例えば、ポリエチレン樹脂、さらに具体的にはPET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート:Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate)が用いられる。なお、導光部材19における光出射面19aと反対側の面19cとの少なくともいずれか一方、または反射性光学部材25の表面には、導光部材19内内の光を散乱させる散乱部(図示せず)などが所定の面内分布を持つようパターニングされており、それにより光出射面19aからの出射光が面内において均一な分布となるよう制御されている。
 上記したように本実施形態に係るバックライト装置12においては、材料にPETを含む光学部材として、透光性光学部材15であるプリズムシート21と、反射性光学部材25とが使用されている。これらプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25は、光源であるLED17から所定の波長領域の光が照射されると、経時的にその透過光や反射光の色度が変化するおそれがある。具体的には、LED17として主発光波長が青色の波長領域(第1の波長領域)に存するものを用いた場合には、プリズムシート21における青色の波長領域の光の透過率、及び反射性光学部材25における青色の波長領域の光の反射率がそれぞれ増加し、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光における色度がそれぞれ青色寄りにシフトするおそれがあった。このような色度シフトが発生すると、液晶パネル11の表示画像の色味が使用時間の経過に伴って次第に青色気味に変化することになるため、表示品位が著しく損なわれる可能性がある。
 上記のような問題に鑑み、本願発明者は鋭意研究を重ねた結果、次の知見を得るに至った。すなわち、主発光波長が青色の波長領域よりも短波長側の波長領域(第2の波長領域)、具体的には紫色の波長領域または近紫外線の波長領域とされる光源からの光をプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25に対して照射すると、プリズムシート21における青色の波長領域の光の透過率、及び反射性光学部材25における青色の波長領域の光の反射率がそれぞれ減少し、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光における色度がそれぞれ黄色寄りにシフトすることを見出したのである。以下、上記した知見を得るに至るまでに本願発明者が行った実験について詳しく説明する。
 本願発明者は、プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25に対して照射する光の波長を変化させたとき、透過光及び反射光の色度がどのように変化するかを測定する実験を行った。この実験では、まず、光源として単色光を発する(単一のピーク波長を有する)単色LEDを用い、その単色LEDからの光をプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25にそれぞれ所定時間(例えば300時間程度)照射し続けた。その後、上記単色LEDとは別の白色光を発する白色LED(後に説明する第1LED17Aと同じもの)からの光をプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25にそれぞれ照射しつつプリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光における色度、具体的にはCIE1931色度図における色度座標値であるx値及びy値をそれぞれ測定した。上記した作業を、主発光波長が異なる複数の単色LEDを用い、使用する単色LED毎にプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25を交換して繰り返し行った。
 なお、CIE1931色度図は、図7に示す通りであり、横軸のx軸及び縦軸のy軸がそれぞれ色度座標値であるx値及びy値を示している。1931色度図である図6において点Wは、白色の基準色度を表しており、この白色の基準色度に係る点Wからx値及びy値が共に小さくなるほど青色味が強くなり、逆にx値及びy値が共に大きくなるほど黄色味が強くなる傾向とされる。
 上記した実験の結果を図8に示す。図8において横軸はプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25に所定時間断続的に光を照射した単色LEDにおける主発光波長を示し、縦軸は白色LEDからの光を照射したときのプリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の変化量であるΔx値及びΔy値を示す。図8によれば、単色LEDの主発光波長が約420nmを上回ると、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に減少するのに対し、単色LEDの主発光波長が約420nmを下回ると、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に増加することが分かる。つまり、420nm近辺がプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25の光学特性を真逆に変化させる閾値となっており、この閾値は詳細には422nmとされる。また、単色LEDの主発光波長が約420nm(422nm)~500nmの範囲とされたときの上記x値及びy値の減少量と、単色LEDの主発光波長が約300nm~420nm(422nm)の範囲とされたときの上記x値及びy値の増加量とを比較すると、後者の方が前者よりも相対的に大きなものとなっている。色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少することは、色度が青色寄りにシフトすることを意味し、x値及びy値が共に増加することは、色度が黄色寄りにシフトすることを意味する(図7に示すCIE1931色度図を参照)。なお、単色LEDの主発光波長を約350nmとしたとき、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の増加量がピークとなり、単色LEDの主発光波長を約440nmとしたとき、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の減少量がピークとなる。また、図8によれば、単色LEDの照射に伴う、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の変化量(Δx値及びΔy値)は、概ねx値よりもy値の方が相対的に大きくなっていることが分かる。
 上記のような知見に基づき、本実施形態では、バックライト装置12に主発光波長が互いに異なる2種類のLED17を用いるようにしており、LED17は、主発光波長が422nmを上回る第1の波長領域に存する第1LED17Aと、主発光波長が422nmを下回る第2の波長領域に存する第2LED17Bとからなるものとされる。続いて、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bについて詳しく説明する。
 第1LED17Aは、図5に示すように、発光源であるLEDチップ(LED素子、発光素子)と、LEDチップを封止する樹脂材と、樹脂材に含有されるとともにLEDチップからの光により励起されて発光する蛍光体とからなり、全体としては概ね白色光を発するものとされる。第1LED17Aが有するLEDチップは、例えばInGaN系の材料からなるとともに、425nm~500nmの範囲に単一のピーク波長を有するものとされる。つまり、第1LED17Aが有するLEDチップは、主発光波長が概ね青色の波長領域(420nm~480nm)に存しており、青色光を単色発光する青色LEDチップであると言える。この青色LEDチップの主発光波長は、440nm~460nmの範囲とされるのがより好ましく、具体的には例えば451nmとされる。主発光波長が440nm~460nmの範囲、特に451nmとされる青色LEDチップは、製造コストが低廉なものであることから、そのような青色LEDチップを用いるのが第1LED17Aの調達コストを低減する上で好ましい。しかも、この青色LEDチップにおける発光光のピーク波長は、第1LED17Aにおける主発光波長であることから、図8に示すグラフを参照すると、第1LED17Aからの光による、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の減少量は、後述する第2LED17Bからの光(主発光波長が400nm程度)による上記x値及びy値の増加量よりも相対的に少なくなることが分かる。従って、第1LED17Aによるプリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光の色度シフトを補償するために用いられる第2LED17Bの設置数や発光光量を極力少なくすることができる。
 蛍光体としては、青色LEDチップからの光に励起されて緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体からなる組のものを用いることができる。また、上記以外の蛍光体としては、青色LEDチップからの光に励起されて黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体を用いることができる。いずれにしても、青色LEDチップが発する光と、蛍光体が発する光とによって第1LED17Aは、全体として概ね白色光を発することが可能とされる。そして、本実施形態に係るバックライト装置12は、3色のカラーフィルタを有する液晶パネル11にカラー画像を表示するため、その照明光の色度が既述した白色の基準色度に近いものとされており、第1LED17Aの発光光の色度もこの照明光の色度に近いものとされる。つまり、第1LED17Aの発光光の色度は、バックライト装置12の照明光において支配的であると言える。なお、上記した緑色光は緑色の波長領域(500nm~570nm)の光であり、また赤色光は赤色の波長領域(600nm~780nm)の光であり、黄色光は黄色の波長領域(570nm~600nm)の光である。
 第2LED17Bは、図5に示すように、発光源であるLEDチップ(LED素子、発光素子)と、LEDチップを封止する樹脂材とからなり、LEDチップからの光がそのまま全体の発光光となる。第2LED17Bが有するLEDチップは、例えばInGaN系の材料からなるとともに、380nm~420nmの範囲に単一のピーク波長を有するものとされる。つまり、第2LED17Bが有するLEDチップは、主発光波長が紫色の波長領域(380nm~420nm)に存しており、紫色光を単色発光する紫色LEDチップであると言える。従って、第2LED17Bは、全体の発光光が紫色光となる。この紫色LEDチップの主発光波長は、上記した数値範囲の中でも400nm程度とされるのがより好ましい。この紫色LEDチップにおける発光光のピーク波長は、第2LED17Bにおける主発光波長であることから、図8に示すグラフを参照すると、第2LED17Bからの光による、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の増加量は、第1LED17Aからの光による上記x値及びy値の減少量よりも相対的に多くなることが分かる。この第2LED17Bの発光光の色度は、既述したバックライト装置12の照明光(白色光)の色度とは大きく(少なくとも第1LED17Aの発光光の色度よりは)異なるものであることから、その発光光量は必要最小限であることが好ましい。従って、上記のように第2LED17Bの主発光波長を400nm程度とすることで、第2LED17Bの設置数や発光光量を極力少なくすることができ、バックライト装置12の照明光の色味に第2LED17Bが与える影響を低減することができる。なお、バックライト装置12の照明光のホワイトバランスを調整するには、例えば第2LED17Bの予定設置数や予定発光光量に基づいて第1LED17Aの蛍光体の含有量や種類を調整することが考えられるが、上記のように第2LED17Bの発光光量を極力少なくすることで、第1LED17Aに関する調整を軽微なものとすることができる。また、第2LED17Bは、第1LED17Aに比べると、調達コストが高価であることから、その設置数を少なくすることで、製造コストの削減を図る上で好適とされる。なお、少なくとも第1LED17Aにおける発光光の主発光波長を約420nm(422nm)~500nmの範囲とし、且つ第2LED17Bにおける発光光の主発光波長を約300nm~420nm(422nm)の範囲とすれば、第1LED17Aの発光光によるプリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の減少量よりも、第2LED17Bの発光光による上記x値及びy値の増加量の方が相対的に大きなものとなる(図8を参照)から、上記した作用及び効果(第2LED17Bの設置数及び発光光量を極力少なくすることができるなど)を得ることができる。
 続いて、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bの配置などについて詳しく説明する。第1LED17Aは、図5に示すように、第2LED17Bよりも設置数が相対的に多く、逆に言うと第2LED17Bは、第1LED17Aよりも設置数が相対的に少なくなっている。第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bは、LED基板18においてその長辺方向(透光性光学部材15及び反射性光学部材25の長辺方向、X軸方向)に沿って複数ずつ並列して配されることで、1つのLED群17Gを構成している。LED群17Gを構成する第1LED17Aは、X軸方向に2つ続けて並んでから1つの第2LED17Bを挟んで再び2つ続けて並ぶ配置とされている。言い換えると、LED群17Gを構成する第2LED17Bは、X軸方向について隣り合う第2LED17Bとの間に2つの第1LED17Aを挟み込むよう配されている。Y軸方向について導光部材19を挟んで配される一対のLED群17G1,17G2のうち、第1のLED群17G1に含まれる第2LED17Bと、第2LED群17G2に含まれる第2LED17Bとは互いにX軸方向、つまりLED17の並列方向についてオフセットした位置に配されている。従って、第1のLED群17G1に含まれる第2LED17Bからの発光光と、第2のLED群17G2に含まれる第2LED17Bからの発光光とが導光部材19内において分散され易くなり、もって導光部材19からの出射光において第2LED17Bからの発光光がムラとして視認され難くなる。しかも、第1のLED群17G1を有するLED基板18と、第2のLED群17G2を有するLED基板18とでは、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bの配列が同一であって、シャーシ14内に収容する際の向きを180度異ならせたものであるから、LED基板18の品種を1種類とすることができ、製造コストの低減を図る上で有用である。
 本実施形態は以上のような構造であり、続いてその作用を説明する。液晶表示装置10の電源をONすると、図示しない制御回路により液晶パネル11の駆動が制御されるとともに、バックライト装置12における各LED17の駆動が制御されることで液晶パネル11に照明光が照射され、もって液晶パネル11に所定の画像が表示される。以下、バックライト装置12に係る作用について詳しく説明する。各LED17を点灯させると、各LED17から出射した光は、図3に示すように、導光部材19における光入射面19bに入射する。ここで、LED17と光入射面19bとの間には、所定の空間が保有されているものの、その空間が表側の第1反射シート23と裏側の第2反射シート24とにより光学的に閉鎖されているので、LED17からの光は両反射シート23,24により繰り返し反射されることで、殆ど外部に漏れ出すことなく効率的に光入射面19bに入射される。
 光入射面19bから導光部材19内に入射した光は、図3に示すように、反射性光学部材25にて反射されたり、導光部材19における外部(空気層)との界面にて全反射されることで、外部に漏れ出すことなく効率的に導光部材19内を伝播された後、光出射面19aから表側の透光性光学部材15に向けて出射される。導光部材19から出射された光は、透光性光学部材15を構成する拡散板15a及び拡散シート20を透過することで面内の輝度分布が均一なものとなるよう拡散されてから、プリズムシート21を透過することで画像を表示する上で有効な方向に集光され、その後、反射型偏光シート22に照射されると、p波については透過されるものの、液晶パネル11の偏光板に吸収されるs波については選択的に導光部材19側へ反射された後、s波とp波に分離されてから再び反射型偏光シート22へ向かうことで効率的に液晶パネル11へ向けて出射される。
 上記のようにして液晶表示装置10が使用されると、PET製の光学部材であるプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25が、LED17からの光によってその光学特性が経時的に変化し、バックライト装置12の照明光が特定の色味を帯びることが懸念されるところである。その点、本実施形態では、バックライト装置12に用いるLED17として、主発光波長が422nmを上回る第1LED17Aと、主発光波長が422nmを下回る第2LED17Bとの2種類を用いるようにしているから、第1LED17Aの発光光によって経時的にプリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少される一方で、第2LED17Bの発光光によって経時的にプリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光のx値及びy値が共に増加される(図8を参照)ので、全体として色度の変化が相殺されることになる。従って、バックライト装置12の照明光及び液晶表示装置10における表示画像が特定の色味を帯びることが抑制され、もって使用に伴う上記照明光及び表示画像の色味が変化するのを防ぐことができる。
 以上説明したように本実施形態のバックライト装置12は、光源であるLED17と、LED17から発せられた光を透過または反射する光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)とを備え、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)は、第1の波長領域の光が照射されるのに伴って透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少するのに対し、第2の波長領域の光が照射されるのに伴って透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に増加する光学特性を有していて、LED17は、主発光波長が第1の波長領域に存する第1光源である第1LED(第1光源)17Aと、主発光波長が第2の波長領域に存する第2光源である第2LED(第2光源)17Bとからなる。
 このようにすれば、LED17からの光が照射されることに伴って光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)の光学特性が経時的に変化した場合であっても、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)は、第1LED17Aからの光によって透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少する一方で、第2LED17Bからの光によって透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に増加するので、全体として色度の変化が相殺され、もって透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びることが避けられる。これにより、当該バックライト装置12の照明光の色味が使用に伴って変化するのを抑制することができる。
 また、第1LED17Aは、主発光波長が422nmを上回るのに対し、第2LED17Bは、主発光波長が422nmを下回るものとされる。このようにすれば、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)として、照射される光の波長が422nmを上回ると透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に減少するのに対し、照射される光の波長が422nmを下回ると透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に増加するものを用いた場合に好適とされる。
 また、第1LED17Aは、主発光波長が425nm~500nmの範囲に存するのに対し、第2LED17Bは、主発光波長が300nm~420nmの範囲に存するものとされる。このようにすれば、第1LED17Aの主発光波長の下限値及び第2LED17Bの主発光波長の上限値が共に上記した閾値である422nmを避けた値とされ、さらには第1LED17Aの主発光波長の上限値及び第2LED17Bの下限値がそれぞれ光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)における透過光または反射光における色度を変化させるのに十分な値とされていることから、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bからの光が照射されることで光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)における透過光または反射光の色度の変化がより確実に相殺される。従って、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)における透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びる事態をより確実に回避することができる。
 また、第2LED17Bは、主発光波長が380nm~420nmの範囲に存するものとされる。このようにすれば、第2LED17Bにおける主発光波長が、近紫外線の波長領域(200nm~380nm)を含まない、可視光線の波長領域とされているから、第2LED17Bからの光を当該バックライト装置12の照明光として有効に利用することができ、もって照明光の輝度向上を図る上で好適となる。
 また、第1LED17Aは、主発光波長が約450nmとされる。このようにすれば、例えば第1光源としてLEDを用いた場合、主発光波長が約450nmのLEDチップを有するLEDの調達コストが低くなるので、当該バックライト装置12に係る製造コストの低減を図る上で有用となる。
 また、第1光源及び第2光源は、共にLED17からなる。このようにすれば、高輝度化及び低消費電力化などを図ることができる。
 また、第1LED17Aは、主発光波長が第1の波長領域に存するLEDチップ(LED素子)と、LEDチップからの光により励起されて発光する蛍光体とから構成される。このようにすれば、蛍光体の種類や含有量などを適宜調整することで、第1LED17Aの発光光の色度を適切なものとすることができる。
 また、第1LED17Aが有するLEDチップ(LED素子)は、青色光を発光する青色LEDチップ(青色LED素子)とされるのに対し、第1LED17Aが有する蛍光体は、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体との少なくともいずれか一方からなる。このようにすれば、第1LED17Aは、全体として概ね白色光を発するものとされるから、当該バックライト装置12の照明光に係る色度を白色とする場合に好適とされる。また、第1LED17Aにおける蛍光体の種類や含有量などを選択することで、第1LED17Aの発光光に係る色度を容易に調整することができるから、第2LED17Bの発光光に係る色度に応じて照明光のホワイトバランスを適切なものとすることが可能とされる。
 また、第2LED17Bは、第1LED17Aよりも設置数が相対的に少ないものとされる。このようにすれば、当該バックライト装置12の照明光に占める第2LED17Bの発光光量の比率が低いものとなる。従って、例えば、第1LED17Aと第2LED17Bとで発光光の色度が互いに異なるとともに、第1LED17Aにおける発光光の色度が当該バックライト装置12の照明光において支配的な場合には、上記照明光に占める第2LED17Bの発光光量の比率が下がることで、第2LED17Bからの光が照明光の色味に与える影響を軽減することができる。
 また、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bは、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)の辺に沿って複数ずつ並列するとともに、隣り合う第2LED17Bの間に第1LED17Aが複数で且つ同数ずつ介在するよう配されている。このようにすれば、設置数が互いに異なる第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bを、その並列方向について設置密度にムラが無くなるよう配置しているから、当該バックライト装置12における照明光にも色ムラが生じ難いものとなる。
 また、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bは、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)の辺に沿って並列して配されることでLED群17Gを構成しており、LED群17Gに対して端部が対向状に配されるとともに、LED群17Gからの光を光出射側へ導く導光部材19が備えられている。このようにすれば、LED群17Gから発せられた光は、導光部材19の端部に入射されると、導光部材19内を伝播された後、光出射側へ向けて出射されることで、当該バックライト装置12の照明光にムラが生じ難いものとされる。
 また、LED群17Gは、導光部材19における一方の端部に対して対向状に配される第1のLED群17G1と、導光部材19における一方の端部とは反対側の他方の端部に対して対向状に配される第2のLED群17G2とからなり、第1のLED群17G1に含まれる第2LED17Bと、第2のLED群17G2に含まれる第2LED17Bとが、LED群17Gの並列方向についてオフセットして配されている。このようにすれば、第1のLED群17G1に含まれる第2LED17Bからの光と、第2のLED群17G2に含まれる第2LED17Bからの光とが、導光部材19内においてLED群17Gの並列方向について分散されることになる。従って、例えば、第1LED17Aと第2LED17Bとで発光光の色度が互いに異なるとともに、第1LED17Aにおける発光光の色度が当該バックライト装置12の照明光において支配的な場合において、当該バックライト装置12の照明光にムラが生じるのを効果的に防ぐことができる。
 また、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bを収容するとともに光出射側に開口する開口部14cを有するシャーシ14が備えられており、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)には、開口部14cを覆う形で配されるとともに第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bからの光を透過する透光性光学部材15が含まれている。このようにすれば、シャーシ14内に収容された第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bから発せられた光は、開口部14cを覆う形で配される透光性光学部材15を透過してから外部へと出射される。この透光性光学部材15の透過光が特定の色味を帯びることが避けられるから、当該バックライト装置12の照明光の色味が使用に伴って変化するのを好適に抑制することができる。
 また、透光性光学部材15には、透過光に集光作用を付与するプリズムシート21が含まれている。このようにすれば、プリズムシート21は、透過光に集光作用を付与するものであるため、仮に透過光が特定の色味を帯びた場合にはその色味がより目立つ傾向にある。その点、本実施形態によれば、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bによってプリズムシートの透過光が特定の色味を帯びるのが回避されているので、一層効果的である。
 また、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bを収容するとともに光出射側に開口する開口部14cを有するシャーシ14が備えられており、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)には、シャーシ14の内面に沿って延在する形で配されるとともに第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bからの光を光出射側へ向けて反射する反射性光学部材25が含まれている。このようにすれば、シャーシ14内に収容された第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bから発せられた光は、シャーシ14の内面に沿って延在する形で配される反射性光学部材25によって光出射側へ向けて反射されることで出射が促される。この反射性光学部材25の反射光が特定の色味を帯びることが避けられるから、当該バックライト装置12の照明光の色味が使用に伴って変化するのを好適に抑制することができる。
 また、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)は、ポリエステル樹脂からなる。このようにすれば、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bによってポリエステル樹脂からなる光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)の透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びる事態を好適に回避することができる。
 また、光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)は、PET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート)からなる。このようにすれば、PETは、発色団としてカルボニル基を有しており、このカルボニル基が光学特性を変化させる一因となっている可能性があるものの、第1LED17A及び第2LED17Bによって光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)の透過光または反射光が特定の色味を帯びる事態を好適に回避することができる。
 <実施形態2>
 本発明の実施形態2を図9によって説明する。この実施形態2では、第2LED117Bを変更したものを示す。なお、上記した実施形態1と同様の構造、作用及び効果について重複する説明は省略する。
 本実施形態に係る第2LED117Bは、図9に示すように、第2LED117Bは、図8に示すように、発光源であるLEDチップ(LED素子、発光素子)と、LEDチップを封止する樹脂材と、樹脂材に含有されるとともにLEDチップからの光により励起されて発光する蛍光体とからなり、全体としては概ね白色光を発するものとされる。第2LED117Bが有するLEDチップは、例えばInGaN系の材料からなるとともに、300nm~420nmの範囲に単一のピーク波長を有するものとされる。つまり、第2LED17Bが有するLEDチップは、主発光波長が紫色の波長領域または近紫外線の波長領域(200nm~380nm)の一部に存している。例えば、第2LED117BのLEDチップとして、380nm~420nmの範囲に単一のピーク波長を有するものを用いた場合には、そのLEDチップは可視光線の紫色光を発する紫色LEDチップとなる。一方、第2LED117BのLEDチップとして、300nm~380nmの範囲に単一のピーク波長を有するものを用いた場合には、そのLEDチップは近紫外線を発する近紫外線LEDチップとなる。
 第2LED117BのLEDチップの主発光波長は、上記した数値範囲の中でも350nm程度とされるのが好ましい。このLEDチップ(紫外線LEDチップ)における発光光のピーク波長は、第2LED117Bにおける主発光波長であることから、図8に示すグラフを参照すると、第2LED117Bからの光による、プリズムシート21の透過光及び反射性光学部材25の反射光におけるx値及びy値の増加量はピーク値となることが分かる。この第2LED117Bの発光光の色度は、既述したバックライト装置12の照明光(白色光)の色度において支配的となる第1LED17Aの発光光の色度とは多少なりとも異なる場合があることから、その発光光量は必要最小限であることが好ましい。従って、上記のように第2LED117Bの主発光波長を350nm程度とすることで、第2LED117Bの設置数や発光光量を極力少なくしつつも、第1LED17Aからの光によるプリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25の色度(光学特性)の変化を効率的に相殺することができ、もってバックライト装置12の照明光の色味に第2LED117Bが与える影響を低減することができる。なお、バックライト装置12の照明光のホワイトバランスを調整するには、例えば第2LED117Bの予定設置数や予定発光光量に基づいて第1LED17Aの蛍光体の含有量や種類を調整することが考えられるが、上記のように第2LED117Bの発光光量を極力少なくすることで、第1LED17Aに関する調整を軽微なものとすることができる。また、第2LED117Bは、第1LED17Aに比べると、調達コストが相対的に高価であることから、その設置数を少なくすることで、製造コストの削減を図る上で好適とされる。
 第2LED117Bの蛍光体としては、紫色LEDチップまたは近紫外線LEDチップからの光に励起されて青色光を発する青色蛍光体、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体、及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体からなる組のものを用いることができる。また、上記以外の蛍光体としては、紫色LEDチップまたは近紫外線LEDチップからの光に励起されて青色光を発する青色蛍光体及び黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体からなる組のものを用いることができる。いずれにしても、紫色LEDチップまたは近紫外線LEDチップが発する光と、蛍光体が発する光とによって第2LED117Bは、全体として概ね白色光を発することが可能とされる。このような構成とすれば、第1LED17Aと第2LED117Bとの少なくともいずれか一方における蛍光体の含有量や種類を調整することで、第1LED17Aの発光光と、第2LED117Bの発光光とを同等の色度とすることが可能となるから、実施形態1に比べるとバックライト装置の照明光及び液晶表示装置の表示画像に色ムラが生じ難いものとなる。なお、第2LED117Bに用いる蛍光体としては、紫色LEDチップまたは近紫外線LEDチップからの光に励起されて緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体からなる組のものを用いることもできる。また、上記以外の蛍光体としては、紫色LEDチップまたは近紫外線LEDチップからの光に励起されて黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体のみを用いることもできる。
 以上説明したように本実施形態によれば、第2LED117Bは、主発光波長が第2の波長領域に存するLEDチップ(LED素子)と、LEDチップからの光により励起されて発光する蛍光体とから構成される。このようにすれば、蛍光体の種類や含有量などを適宜調整することで、第2LED117Bの発光光の色度を適切なものとすることができる。
 また、第2LED117Bが有するLEDチップ(LED素子)は、近紫外線または可視光線における紫色光を発する紫LEDチップ(紫LED素子)とされるのに対し、第2LED117Bが有する蛍光体は、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、青色光を発光する青色蛍光体、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体、及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体と、青色光を発光する青色蛍光体及び黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体の組とのうちのいずれか一つからなる。このようにすれば、第2LED117Bは、全体として概ね白色光を発するものとされるから、当該バックライト装置12の照明光に係る色度を白色とする場合に好適とされる。また、第2LED117Bにおける蛍光体の種類や含有量などを選択することで、第2LED117Bの発光光に係る色度を容易に調整することができるから、第1LED17Aの発光光に係る色度に応じて照明光のホワイトバランスを適切なものとすることが可能とされる。
 また、第2LED117Bは、主発光波長が約350nmとされる。このようにすれば、第2LED117Bからの光によって光学部材(プリズムシート21及び反射性光学部材25)における透過光または反射光におけるx値及びy値が共に効率的に増加するから、第2LED117Bの発光光量が少なく済む。従って、例えば、第1LED17Aと第2LED117Bとで発光光の色度が互いに異なるとともに、第1LED17Aにおける発光光の色度が当該バックライト装置12の照明光において支配的な場合には、上記照明光に占める第2LED117Bの発光光量の比率が下がることで、第2LED117Bからの光が照明光の色味に与える影響を軽減することができる。
 <実施形態3>
 本発明の実施形態3を図10から図12によって説明する。この実施形態3では、上記した実施形態1からバックライト装置212を直下型に変更したものを示す。なお、上記した実施形態1と同様の構造、作用及び効果について重複する説明は省略する。
 本実施形態に係る液晶表示装置210は、図10に示すように、液晶パネル211と、直下型のバックライト装置212とをベゼル213などにより一体化した構成とされる。なお、液晶パネル211の構成は、上記した実施形態1と同様であるから、重複する説明は省略する。以下、直下型のバックライト装置212の構成について説明する。
 バックライト装置212は、図11に示すように、光出射側(液晶パネル211側)に開口部214cを有した略箱型をなすシャーシ214と、シャーシ214の開口部214cを覆うようにして配される透光性光学部材215、シャーシ214の外縁部に沿って配され透光性光学部材215の外縁部をシャーシ214との間で挟んで保持するフレーム216とを備える。さらに、シャーシ214内には、透光性光学部材215(液晶パネル211)の直下となる位置に対向状に配されるLED217と、LED217が実装されたLED基板218と、LED基板218においてLED217に対応した位置に取り付けられる拡散レンズ26と、LED基板218をシャーシ214に対して取付状態に保持するための基板保持部材27とが備えられる。その上、シャーシ214内には、シャーシ214内の光を光学部材215側に反射させる反射性光学部材225とが備えられる。このように本実施形態に係るバックライト装置212は、直下型であるから、実施形態1にて示したエッジライト型のバックライト装置12で用いていた導光部材19が備えられていない。また、フレーム216の構成については、実施形態1とは第1反射シート23を有していない点以外は同様であるから、説明を省略する。続いて、バックライト装置212の各構成部品について詳しく説明する。
 シャーシ214は、金属製とされ、図10及び図11に示すように、液晶パネル211と同様に横長な方形状をなす底板214aと、底板214aの各辺の外端からそれぞれ表側(光出射側)に向けて立ち上がる側板214bと、各側板214bの立ち上がり端から外向きに張り出す受け板28とからなり、全体としては表側に向けて開口した浅い略箱型をなしている。シャーシ214は、その長辺方向がX軸方向(水平方向)と一致し、短辺方向がY軸方向(鉛直方向)と一致している。シャーシ214における各受け板28には、表側からフレーム216及び次述する透光性光学部材215が載置可能とされる。各受け板28には、フレーム216がねじ止めされている。シャーシ214の底板214aには、各基板保持部材27を取り付けるための取付孔がそれぞれ開口して設けられている。
 透光性光学部材215は、拡散板215aと、光学シート215bであるプリズムシート221及び反射型偏光シート222とから構成されており、上記した実施形態1とは光学シート215bに拡散シート20(図2を参照)が含まれていない点を除いては同様であるから、重複する説明を省略する。
 次に、LED217が実装されるLED基板218について説明する。LED基板218は、図11及び図12に示すように、平面に視て横長の方形状をなす基材を有しており、長辺方向がX軸方向と一致し、短辺方向がY軸方向と一致する状態でシャーシ214内において底板214aに沿って延在しつつ収容されている。このLED基板218の基材の板面のうち、表側を向いた面(透光性光学部材215側を向いた面)には、LED217が表面実装されている。LED217は、その発光面が透光性光学部材215(液晶パネル211)と対向状をなすとともに、その光軸がZ軸方向、つまり液晶パネル211の表示面と直交する方向と一致している。
 LED217は、図12に示すように、LED基板218の板面上において長辺方向(X軸方向)及び短辺方向(Y軸方向)に沿って複数ずつマトリクス状に並列して配されており、所定の配線パターン(図示せず)により相互が接続されている。なお、図12は拡散レンズ26を外した状態のLED基板218の平面図である。LED217を構成する第1LED217Aは、第2LED217Bよりも設置数が相対的に多く、逆に言うと第2LED217Bは、第1LED217Aよりも設置数が相対的に少なくなっている。第1LED217A及び第2LED217Bは、LED基板218においてその長辺方向及び短辺方向に沿って複数ずつ並列して配されている。第1LED17Aは、X軸方向に2つ続けて並んでから1つの第2LED17Bを挟んで再び2つ続けて並ぶ配置とされており、この配置はY軸方向についても同様とされる。言い換えると、第2LED217Bは、X軸方向について隣り合う第2LED217Bとの間に2つの第1LED217Aを挟み込むよう配されており、この配置はY軸方向についても同様とされる。さらに別言すると、第1LED217A及び第2LED217Bは、それぞれX軸方向及びY軸方向の双方に対して傾いた方向に沿って並列して配されているとも言える。これら第1LED217A及び第2LED217Bの構成などは、上記した実施形態1に記載したものと同様であるから、重複する説明は省略する。
 拡散レンズ26は、ほぼ透明で(高い透光性を有し)且つ屈折率が空気よりも高い合成樹脂材料(例えばポリカーボネートやアクリルなど)からなる。拡散レンズ26は、図10及び図11に示すように、所定の厚みを有するとともに、平面に視て略円形状に形成されており、LED基板218に対して各LED217を表側から個別に覆うよう、つまり平面に視て各LED217と重畳するようそれぞれ取り付けられている。そして、この拡散レンズ26は、LED217から発せられた指向性の強い光を拡散させつつ出射させることができる。つまり、LED217から発せられた光は、拡散レンズ26を介することにより指向性が緩和されるので、隣り合うLED217間の間隔を広くとってもその間の領域が暗部として視認され難くなる。これにより、LED217の設置個数を少なくすることが可能となっている。この拡散レンズ26は、平面に視てLED217とほぼ同心となる位置に配されている。
 基板保持部材27は、ポリカーボネートなどの合成樹脂製とされており、表面が光の反射性に優れた白色を呈する。基板保持部材27は、図10及び図11に示すように、LED基板218の板面に沿う本体部と、本体部から裏側、つまりシャーシ214側に向けて突出してシャーシ214に固定される固定部とを備える。なお、基板保持部材27のうち、画面中央側に配された一対の基板保持部材27には、本体部から表側に突出する支持部が設けられており、この支持部によって透光性光学部材215を裏側から支持することが可能とされる。
 反射性光学部材225は、図10及び図11に示すように、シャーシ214の内面をほぼ全域にわたって覆う大きさ、つまり底板214aに沿って平面配置された全LED基板218を一括して覆う大きさを有している。この反射性光学部材225によりシャーシ214内の光を透光性光学部材215側に向けて反射させることができるようになっている。反射性光学部材225は、シャーシ214の底板214aに沿って延在するとともに底板214aの大部分を覆う大きさの底部225aと、底部225aの各外端から表側に立ち上がるとともに底部225aに対して傾斜状をなす4つの立ち上がり部225bと、各立ち上がり部225bの外端から外向きに延出するとともにシャーシ214の受け板28に載せられる延出部225cとから構成されている。この反射性光学部材225の底部225aが各LED基板218における表側の面、つまりLED217の実装面に対して表側に重なるよう配される。また、反射性光学部材225には、各拡散レンズ26を通す孔と、各基板保持部材27を通す孔とが対応する位置に開口して形成されている。なお、本実施形態に係る反射性光学部材225は、上記した実施形態1の反射性光学部材25と同様の材料からなるものであり、重複する説明を省略する。
 上記したような直下型のバックライト装置212においても、PET製のプリズムシート221及び反射性光学部材225が、LED217からの光によってその光学特性が経時的に変化し、バックライト装置12の照明光が特定の色味を帯びることが懸念されるところであるが、バックライト装置212に用いるLED217として第1LED217A及び第2LED217Bを用いているから、全体としての色度の変化を相殺することができ、もってバックライト装置212の照明光及び液晶表示装置210における表示画像が特定の色味を帯びることが好適に抑制される。
 <他の実施形態>
 本発明は上記記述及び図面によって説明した実施形態に限定されるものではなく、例えば次のような実施形態も本発明の技術的範囲に含まれる。
 (1)上記した各実施形態では、プリズムシート(透光性光学部材)及び反射性光学部材の光学特性を真逆に変化させるLEDの主発光波長の閾値が422nmとされる場合を例示したが、透光性光学部材及び反射性光学部材に用いる材料の種類や添加物によって上記した閾値は変動する場合があり、その場合には変動後の閾値を基準として第1LED及び第2LEDの主発光波長を設定すればよい。また、第1LED及び第2LEDの主発光波長の具体的な数値は、上記した各実施形態以外の数値に適宜に変更することが可能である。
 (2)上記した実施形態1において、第2LEDに近紫外線を発する近紫外線LEDチップを用いたものを使用することも可能である。
 (3)上記した実施形態2において、第1LEDとして蛍光体を省略し、全体の発光光が青色の単色光とされる構成のものを用いることも可能である。
 (4)上記した各実施形態では、第2LEDが第1LEDよりも設置数が少なくなるものを例示したが、第1LEDと第2LEDとを同数ずつ設置した構成のものや、第1LEDが第2LEDよりも設置数が少なくなる構成のものも本発明に含まれる。
 (5)上記した各実施形態以外にも、第1LED及び第2LEDの具体的な設置数や配置などについては適宜に変更可能である。例えば第2LEDを1つのみ設置するようにしても構わない。
 (6)上記した各実施形態では、プリズムシートにおける透光性基材とプリズム層とが別の材料からなるものを示したが、透光性基材とプリズム層とを同一の材料からなるものとすることも可能である。
 (7)上記した各実施形態以外にも、プリズムシート(透光性光学部材)及び反射性光学部材に用いる具体的な材料は適宜に変更可能であり、他のポリエステル樹脂である例えばPEN、PBT、PTTなどに変更することができる。なお、ポリエステル樹脂以外にも、AS樹脂、アクリル樹脂、PS(ポリスチレン)、PP(ポリプロピレン)などに変更することも可能である。
 (8)上記した各実施形態以外にも、透光性光学部材の使用枚数及び種類などについては適宜に変更可能である。
 (9)上記した各実施形態では、色度シフトが生じる光学部材としてプリズムシート及び反射性光学部材を例示したが、それ以外の種類の光学部材として、例えば導光部材、拡散板、拡散シート、反射型偏光シートなどにおいても、同様の問題が生じるのであれば、本発明を適用することができる。
 (10)上記した各実施形態では、第1LEDからの発光光によってプリズムシート(透光性光学部材)における青色の波長領域の光の透過率、及び反射性光学部材における青色の波長領域の光の反射率がそれぞれ増加する場合を示したが、透光性光学部材及び反射性光学部材に用いる材料の種類や添加物によっては、第1LEDからの発光光に起因して透光性光学部材における赤色の波長領域及び緑色の波長領域の光の透過率、及び反射性光学部材における赤色の波長領域及び緑色の波長領域の光の反射率がそれぞれ減少することで、結果として透過光及び反射光が青色寄りに色度シフトすることがあるが、そのような光学特性を持つ透光性光学部材及び反射性光学部材を用いることも可能である。
 (11)上記した(10)と同様に、透光性光学部材及び反射性光学部材に用いる材料の種類や添加物によっては、第2LEDからの発光光に起因して透光性光学部材における赤色の波長領域及び緑色の波長領域の光の透過率、及び反射性光学部材における赤色の波長領域及び緑色の波長領域の光の反射率がそれぞれ増加することで、結果として透過光及び反射光が黄色寄りに色度シフトすることがあるが、そのような光学特性を持つ透光性光学部材及び反射性光学部材を用いることも可能である。
 (12)上記した各実施形態では、液晶パネルが有するカラーフィルタの着色部をR,G,Bの3色としたものを例示したが、着色部を4色以上とすることも可能である。
 (13)上記した各実施形態では、光源としてLEDを用いた場合を示したが、他の種類の光源(有機ELなど)を用いることも勿論可能である。
 (14)上記した各実施形態では、液晶表示装置のスイッチング素子としてTFTを用いたが、TFT以外のスイッチング素子(例えば薄膜ダイオード(TFD))を用いた液晶表示装置にも適用可能であり、カラー表示する液晶表示装置以外にも、白黒表示する液晶表示装置にも適用可能である。
 (15)上記した各実施形態では、表示パネルとして液晶パネルを用いた液晶表示装置を例示したが、他の種類の表示パネルを用いた表示装置にも本発明は適用可能である。
 (16)上記した各実施形態では、チューナー基板を備えたテレビ受信装置を例示したが、チューナー基板を備えない表示装置にも本発明は適用可能である。

Claims (23)

  1.  光源と、
     前記光源から発せられた光を透過または反射する光学部材とを備え、
     前記光学部材は、第1の波長領域の光が照射されるのに伴って透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に減少するのに対し、第2の波長領域の光が照射されるのに伴って透過光または反射光におけるCIE1931色度図の色度座標値であるx値及びy値が共に増加する光学特性を有していて、
     前記光源は、主発光波長が前記第1の波長領域に存する第1光源と、主発光波長が前記第2の波長領域に存する第2光源とからなる照明装置。
  2.  前記第1光源は、主発光波長が422nmを上回るのに対し、
     前記第2光源は、主発光波長が422nmを下回るものとされる請求項1記載の照明装置。
  3.  前記第1光源は、主発光波長が425nm~500nmの範囲に存するのに対し、
     前記第2光源は、主発光波長が300nm~420nmの範囲に存するものとされる請求項2記載の照明装置。
  4.  前記第2光源は、主発光波長が380nm~420nmの範囲に存するものとされる請求項3記載の照明装置。

  11.  前記第2光源が有する前記LED素子は、近紫外線または可視光線における紫色光を発する紫LED素子とされるのに対し、
     前記第2光源が有する前記蛍光体は、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、青色光を発光する青色蛍光体、緑色光を発光する緑色蛍光体、及び赤色光を発光する赤色蛍光体の組と、黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体と、青色光を発光する青色蛍光体及び黄色光を発光する黄色蛍光体の組とのうちのいずれか一つからなる請求項10記載の照明装置。
  12.  前記第2光源は、前記第1光源よりも設置数が相対的に少ないものとされる請求項1から請求項11のいずれか1項に記載の照明装置。
  13.  前記第1光源及び前記第2光源は、前記光学部材の辺に沿って複数ずつ並列するとともに、隣り合う前記第2光源の間に前記第1光源が複数で且つ同数ずつ介在するよう配されている請求項12記載の照明装置。
  14.  前記第1光源及び前記第2光源は、前記光学部材の辺に沿って並列して配されることで光源群を構成しており、
     前記光源群に対して端部が対向状に配されるとともに、前記光源群からの光を光出射側へ導く導光部材が備えられている請求項1から請求項13のいずれか1項に記載の照明装置。
  15.  前記光源群は、前記導光部材における一方の端部に対して対向状に配される第1の光源群と、前記導光部材における前記一方の端部とは反対側の他方の端部に対して対向状に配される第2の光源群とからなり、
     前記第1の光源群に含まれる前記第2光源と、前記第2の光源群に含まれる前記第2光源とが、前記光源群の並列方向についてオフセットして配されている請求項14記載の照明装置。
  16.  前記第1光源及び前記第2光源を収容するとともに光出射側に開口する開口部を有するシャーシが備えられており、
     前記光学部材には、前記開口部を覆う形で配されるとともに前記第1光源及び前記第2光源からの光を透過する透光性光学部材が含まれている請求項1から請求項15のいずれか1項に記載の照明装置。
  17.  前記透光性光学部材には、透過光に集光作用を付与するプリズムシートが含まれている請求項16記載の照明装置。
  18.  前記第1光源及び前記第2光源を収容するとともに光出射側に開口する開口部を有するシャーシが備えられており、
     前記光学部材には、前記シャーシの内面に沿って延在する形で配されるとともに前記第1光源及び前記第2光源からの光を光出射側へ向けて反射する反射性光学部材が含まれている請求項1から請求項17のいずれか1項に記載の照明装置。
  19.  前記光学部材は、ポリエステル樹脂からなる請求項1から請求項18のいずれか1項に記載の照明装置。
  20.  前記光学部材は、PET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート)からなる請求項19記載の照明装置。
  21.  請求項1から請求項20のいずれか1項に記載の照明装置と、前記照明装置からの光を利用して表示を行う表示パネルとを備える表示装置。
  22.  前記表示パネルは、一対の基板間に液晶を封入してなる液晶パネルとされる請求項21記載の表示装置。
  23.  請求項21または請求項22に記載された表示装置を備えるテレビ受信装置。
