Definitions
- the present description relates to a hang tab for packaging.
- the present description provides a hang tab for use in a packaging of an adhesive film comprising a support structure for hanging the packaging and a film application surface, wherein the hang tab is an application tool for the adhesive film.
- the present description provides a method comprising removing an adhesive film from a packaging comprising a hang tab, applying an adhesive film to a surface and removing trapped air from the interface between the adhesive film and the surface using the hang tab.
- Fig. 1 is a hang tab according to an embodiment of the present description
- Fig. 2a-2c show various configurations for hanging structures of hang tabs according to the present description
- Fig. 3a is a hang tab according to an embodiment of the present description
- Fig. 3b-3e illustrate various film application surfaces of hang tabs according to the present description
- Fig. 4a-4c are hang tabs according to an embodiment of the present invention.
- Fig. 5a-5e is a packaging kit according to the present description in various stages of assembly.
- a hang tab that may function as a tool that can allow a product-package to hang and also provide an additional functionality.
- the hang tab can function as a product applicator for a film.
- the hang tab may slide into a slot in the packaging for easy removal from the packaging.
- the hang tab has a cutout to facilitate hanging the package on a product display peg, a storage rack or the like.
- the hang tab may be manufactured as a durable storage device for extra product.
- the hang tab may, in one embodiment work as a squeegee eliminating the need for a separate item in the package which provides a more sustainable design. By working as a squeegee, it meant that may function as a tool to apply a film uniformly on a surface. In such embodiments, the hang tab is used to squeeze the film into place by removing air bubbles while pushing product onto device surface.
- Such hang tab squeegee application may prevent fingerprints from getting on the film, since the user would not be required to use her hand or fingers to provide application pressure to the film.
- the lamination force provided by the hang tab when used in such a squeegee function can be influenced by the amount of flex in the hang tab material.
- the hang tab material should have enough rigidity to provide a spring tension adequate to apply a firm, even pressure to the surface to which the film is to be applied.
- the particular flex of the material chosen for the hang tab will depend in part on the thickness and type of material selected. For instance, a construction of die cut polystyrene sheet of approximately 1 mm thickness may be appropriate for a hang tab according to the present description. Variations from this performance are myriad, as the combination of materials chosen and thickness vary. For instance, for thinner designs, harder materials may be used and thicker designs might call for more flexible materials.
- Additional conformability of the hang tab to the surface on which a film is applied may be accomplished by wrapping the hang tab with a cloth or soft rag around the film application surface. This method can also be used to clean the surface to which the film is to be applied, to clean the film, or both.
- the hang tab is reusable and may work with multiple size films.
- the hang tab may be designed such that it may be used as an edge guide for trimming a product to size, or may itself be used as a trimming device for trimming a film. That is, in the event that a film does not conform precisely to the surface dimensions to which it is applied, or in the event that the film is not squarely applied, the edge of the hang tab may be used to guide the cutting of the film to fit the precise dimensions of the surface to which it is applied. Such trimming may be by a separate trimming device such as scissors, a knife, a box cutter, or the like. In another embodiment, there may exist a sharp edge of the hang tab itself that is configured to allow a user to trim a film to fit the dimensions of a surface to which the film is applied.
- the tool can be multi-colored to make aesthetically pleasing, or "cool" looking. Further, the color may be chosen such that a given color corresponds to a given size of adhesive film included in the packaging, thus facilitating the selection of the appropriate package by a customer. Further, a manufacturer of a display surface (such as a mobile device) may be assigned a color for all adhesive films packaged to be used in the manufacturer's products, allowing a customer to easily identify the appropriate film for the customer's desired application.
- the hang tab can also be imprinted with logos, advertisements, instructions, rebates, or charitable donation information. This item can be made by any of a variety of methods for making such parts including molding, punching, steel rule die, laser cutting, or other method. Such methods may, in some embodiments, lend themselves to inexpensive, high volume manufacturing operations. Such manufacturing methods allow for flexibility for various shapes like curved edges to accommodate unique device shapes. The shape can be customized to make the hang tab easy to hold for good ergonomics.
- hang tab 10 comprises support structure 20 and edge surface 30.
- Support structure 20 further comprises hanging surface 22 and cutout 24.
- Cutout 24 is a composite of rounded rectangular hole 24a and semicircular feature 24b.
- Hang tab 10 further comprises packaging accommodation slot 40, which is configured to, in some embodiments, receive packaging materials (not shown) as they are folded over to encase an adhesive film (not shown).
- Packaging accommodation slot 40 may, in some embodiments, aid in retaining hang tab 10 and, in particular the portion of hang tab 10 comprising support structure 20, outside the packaging materials. Without packaging accommodation slot 40, in some embodiments, hang tab 10 can slip into the packaging materials when the package is not being hung. Packaging accommodation slot 40 may help to avoid this packaging failure.
- Figures 2a to 2c illustrate exemplary support structures, in particular they illustrate various cutout shapes for use in hang tabs of the present description.
- cutout 24 sometimes referred to in the packaging industry as a "sombrero" slot, comprises hanging surface 22 and rounded rectangular hole 24a with the semicircular feature 24b located at the geometric center of rectangular hole 24a.
- Figure 2b illustrates an embodiment wherein cutout 24 comprises hanging surface 22 and rounded triangular hole 24c.
- Figure 2c illustrates an embodiment wherein cutout 24 comprises hanging surface 22 and circular hole 24d.
- film application surface is one edge of the hang tab.
- the hang tab may be configured so as to facilitate its use as an application tool for an adhesive film.
- the film application surface may have a width that is equal to the width of the adhesive film. In another embodiment, the film application surface has a width that is less than the width of the adhesive film.
- Figure 3 illustrates various embodiments for the film application surface shape for hang tabs described herein.
- Figure 3a shows hang tab 10 having edge surfaces 30, 50, and 60. These surfaces may each have the same shape, may each have different shapes, or for instance, the shape of edge surface 50 and 60 may be of the same shape as each other and the shape of edge surface 30 may be independently chosen to be the same or different than the shape of edge surfaces 50 and 60.
- one or more of edge surfaces 30, 50, or 60 may be film application surfaces.
- the shape of the film application surface may be selected depending upon the film to be applied, the surface to which it is applied, and the material from which the film application surface is made.

- film application surface 70b has an equilateral triangular leading edge.
- film application surface 70c has a right triangular leading edge.
- film application surface 70d has a square leading edge, such as might be produced from die cutting a hang tab from a flat sheet of material.
- the film application surface may be made of different material than the rest of the hang tab.
- the film application surface may be a rubber or elastomeric material
- the hang tab is made of molded thermoplastic material.
- the film application surface might be flexible, allowing it to conform to the surface to which a film is being applied, thereby facilitating a more even application force and leading to greater adhesion between an adhesive film and a surface onto which the film is being adhered.
- the shape of the leading edge may be selected to accommodate any shape to the surface to which a film may be applied.
- the leading edge may be linear for application to a two dimensional surface, it may be convex to accommodate application to a correspondingly concave surface, or it may be concave to accommodate application to a correspondingly convex surface.
- hang tab 10 comprises a linear edge surface 30.
