Description

씨모스 이미지 센서 및 그것의 동작 방법
본 발명은 이미지 센서에 관한 것으로, 좀더 자세하게는 씨모스 이미지 센서 및 그것의 동작 방법에 관한 것이다.
이미지 센서에는 씨씨디(Charge Coupled Device, CCD) 이미지 센서와 씨모스(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor, CMOS) 이미지 센서가 있다. 씨모스(CMOS) 이미지 센서는 씨씨디(CCD) 이미지 센서에 비하여 구동 방식이 간편하고, 다양한 스캐닝(scanning) 방식의 구현이 가능하다. 또한, 씨모스(CMOS) 이미지 센서는 싱글 프로세싱(single processing) 회로를 하나의 칩에 집적할 수 있어 제품의 소형화가 가능하며, 제조 원가가 낮은 장점이 있다.
최근, 이러한 씨모스(CMOS) 이미지 센서는 화상 회의용 카메라, 디지털 스틸 카메라, PC 카메라, 영상 정보를 전달하는 기능을 갖춘 차세대 개인용 휴대 통신 장비 등에 광범위하게 사용되고 있다. 씨모스(CMOS) 이미지 센서의 특성을 향상시키기 위하여, 다이내믹 레인지(Dynamic Range)를 증대시켜 색상 표현력을 개선할 것이 요구된다.
본 발명은 다이내믹 레인지를 크게할 수 있는 씨모스 이미지 센서 및 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법을 제공하는 데 목적이 있다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법은 제 1 시간 동안 광 감지소자에서 광전자를 생성하는 단계; 상기 제 1 시간 보다 짧은 제 2 시간 동안 상기 광 감지소자에서 광전자를 생성하는 단계; 및 상기 광 감지소자에서 생성된 광전자를 감지하는 단계를 포함하며, 상기 광 감지소자에 연결된 전달 트랜지스터의 게이트 전압은 상기 제 1 시간 및 제 2 시간 동안 다르게 설정된다.

이하 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 용이하게 실시할 수 있을 정도로 상세하게 설명하기 위하여 본 발명의 실시 예를 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 설명하기로 한다.
도 1은 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서(10)를 보여주는 블록도이다. 도 1을 참조하면, 씨모스 이미지 센서(10)는 APS(Active Pixel Sensor, APS) 어레이(100), 로우 드라이버(200), 그리고 아날로그-디지털 변환기(Analog Digital Converter, ADC)(300)를 포함한다.
APS 어레이(100)는 복수의 픽셀 회로들을 포함한다. 예를 들어, 픽셀 회로들은 복수의 행들과 열들을 따라 배열될 것이다. 픽셀 회로들은 광 감지소자를 포함한다. 예를 들어, 광 감지소자는 포토 다이오드(photodiode)일 것이다. 다른 예로, 광 감지소자는 포토 트랜지스터(phhoto-transistor)일 것이다. 이하에서는 간략ㅅ한 설명을 위하여 광 감지소자는 포토 다이오드(photodiode)인 것으로 가정된다.
APS 어레이(100)는 포토 다이오드(photodiode)를 이용하여 영상 신호를 생성한다. 즉, APS 어레이(100)는 포토 다이오드(photodiode)를 이용하여 빛을 감지하고, 감지된 빛을 전기적 신호로 변환함으로써 영상 신호를 생성한다. 예를 들어, APS 어레이(100)에서 출력되는 영상 신호들은 3가지 색상들(R,G,B)에 대응하는 아날로그 영상 신호들일 것이다.
아날로그-디지털 변환기(300)는 APS 어레이(110)로부터 출력되는 아날로그 영상 신호를 디지털 신호로 변환한다. 예를 들어, 아날로그-디지털 변환기(300)는 CDS(Correlated Double Sampling) 방식을 이용하여 아날로그 영상 신호를 디지털 신호로 변환할 것이다. 예를 들어, 아날로그-디지털 변환기(300)에 의하여 변환된 디지털 신호는 신호 처리부로 제공될 것이다.
로우 드라이버(200)는 APS 어레이(100)의 행들을 선택한다. 예를 들어, 로우 드라이버(200)는 APS 어레이(100)의 행들을 순차적으로 선택할 것이다. 한편, 씨모스 이미지 센서(10)는 픽셀 회로들을 선택하거나 감지된 영상 신호들을 출력하기 위한 어드레스 신호들을 생성하는 컨트롤러를 더 포함할 수 있다. 이하의 도 2에서는 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 픽셀 회로의 구성이 좀더 자세히 설명될 것이다.
도 2는 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 픽셀 회로(110)를 보여주는 회로도이다. 예를 들어, 도 2의 픽셀 회로(110)는 도 1의 APS 어레이(100)에 포함될 것이다. 도 2를 참조하면, 픽셀 회로(110)는 제 1 내지 제 4 트랜지스터(M1-M4)와 포토 다이오드(PD)를 포함한다.
제 1 트랜지스터(M1)는 전원 전압(VDD)과 부유 확산(Floating Defusion, FD) 노드 사이에 연결된다. 제 1 트랜지스터(M1)의 드레인은 전원 전압(VDD)에 연결된다. 제 1 트랜지스터(M1)의 소스는 부유 확산(FD) 노드에 연결된다. 제 1 트랜지스터(M1)는 리셋 신호(RST)에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성한다. 예를 들어, 제 1 트랜지스터(M1)는 리셋 신호(RST)에 응답하여 부유 확산(FD) 노드를 전원 전압(VDD)으로 리셋할 것이다. 제 1 트랜지스터(M1)는 리셋 트랜지스터(Reset Transistor)라고 칭해질 수 있다.
제 2 트랜지스터(M2)는 부유 확산(FD) 노드와 포토 다이오드(PD) 사이에 위치한다. 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)의 드레인은 부유 확산(FD) 노드에 연결된다. 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)의 소스는 포토 다이오드(PD)에 연결된다. 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)는 전달 신호(TX)에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성한다. 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)는 전달 신호(TX)에 응답하여 포토 다이오드(PD)에서 생성된 광전자(photo-generated electro)를 부유 확산(FD) 노드에 전달할 것이다. 예를 들어, 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)는 전달 트랜지스터(Transfer Transistor)라 칭해질 수 있다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상에 따른 실시 예에 있어서, 포토 다이오드(PD)에서 광전자가 생성되는 동안, 전달 신호(TX)의 전압 레벨은 가변된다. 예를 들어, 포토 다이오드(PD)에서 광전자가 생성되는 동안, 전달 신호(TX)의 전압 레벨은 전달 조정 전압(Transfer Adjusting Voltage)에서 접지 전압(Ground)으로 가변될 것이다.
여기서, 전달 조정 전압(Transfer Adjusting Voltage)은 전달 활성화 전압(Transfer Enabel Voltgage)보다 낮고 접지 전압(Ground)보다 높은 전압을 의미한다. 전달 활성화 전압(Tranfer Enable Voltage)은 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)를 턴 온(turn on) 시키기 위한 전압을 의미한다.
전달 신호(TX)의 전압 레벨을 가변함으로써, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 픽셀 회로(110)는 광전자가 축적될 수 있는 포토 다이오드(PD)의 전하 축적 용량을 가변시킬 수 있다.
포토 다이오드(PD)는 제 2 트랜지스터(M2)와 접지 전압(Ground) 사이에 위치한다. 포토 다이오드(PD)는 빛을 감지하여 광전자(photon)를 생성한다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상에 따른 실시 예에 있어서, 포토 다이오드(PD)는 광전자를 생성하고, 생성된 광전자를 축적한다. 예를 들어, 포토 다이오드(PD)는 제 1 및 제 2 축적 시간(Tint 1, Tint 2) 동안 생성된 광전자를 축적할 것이다.
여기서, 제 1 축적 시간(Tint 1)은 전달 신호(TX)의 전압 레벨이 전달 조정 전압(Transfer Adjusting Voltage)인 상태에서 광전자가 생성되는 시간을 의미한다. 제 2 축적 시간(Tint 2)은 전달 신호(TX)의 전압 레벨이 접지 전압(Ground)인 상태에서 광전자가 생성되는 시간을 의미한다.
이 경우, 제 1 축적 시간(Tint 1)과 제 2 축적 시간(Tint 2)의 비율은 적절히 조절될 수 있다. 제 1 축적 시간(Tint 1)과 제 2 축적 시간(Tint 2)의 비율을 달리함으로써, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서의 다이내믹 레인지(Dynamic Range)가 증대될 수 있다.
계속해서 도 2를 참조하면, 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)는 전원 전압(VDD)과 제 4 트랜지스터(M4) 사이에 위치한다. 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)의 드레인은 전원 전압(VDD)에 연결된다. 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)의 소스는 제 4 트랜지스터(M4)의 드레인에 연결된다. 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)는 부유 확산(FD) 노드의 전압에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성한다. 예를 들어, 부유 확산(FD) 노드의 전압은 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)의 게이트에 전달된다. 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)는 소스 팔로워(Source Follower) 트랜지스터라고 칭해질 수 있다.
제 4 트랜지스터(M4)는 제 3 트랜지스터(M3)에 연결되며, 선택 신호(SEL)에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성한다. 즉, 제 4 트랜지스터(M4)는 선택 신호(SEL)에 응답하여 출력 신호(Vout)를 출력한다.
상술한 바와 같이, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 있어서, 전달 신호(TX)의 전압 레벨은 전달 조정 전압(Transfer Adjusting Voltage)에서 접지 전압(Ground)으로 가변된다. 이 경우, 제 1 축적 시간(Tint 1)과 제 2 축적 시간(Tint 2)을 달리함으로써, 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서의 다이내믹 레인지(Dynamic Range)가 증대될 수 있다.

즉, 포토 다이오드(PD)에는 긴 시간 빛이 조사된 경우에 생성된 광전자들과 짧은 시간 빛이 조사된 경우에 생성된 광전자들이 모두 축적된다. 따라서, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서는 긴 시간 빛이 조사된 경우에 촬상된 영상과 짧은 시간 빛이 조사된 경우에 촬상된 영상을 합성하는 것과 동일한 효과를 갖는다.
결국, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서의 다이내믹 레인지(Dynamic Range)가 증대될 수 있다. 다만, 일반적인 듀얼 캡쳐(dual capture) 방식이 적어도 두 번 영상을 캡쳐해야함에 반하여, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서는 한 번의 영상 캡쳐로 동작할 수 있다.
또한, 포토 다이오드(PD)에 긴 시간 빛이 조사된 경우에 생성된 광전자들과 짧은 시간 빛이 조사된 경우에 생성된 광전자들이 모두 축적되기 때문에, 본 발명의 기술적 사상의 실시 예에 따른 씨모스 이미지 센서는 긴 시간 동안 빛이 조사되었을 때 촬상된 영상과 짧은 시간 동안 빛이 조사되었을 때 촬상된 영상을 합상하기 위한 외부 장치를 필요로 하지 않는다.

한편, 본 발명의 상세한 설명에서는 구체적인 실시 예에 관하여 설명하였으나, 본 발명의 범위와 기술적 사상에서 벗어나지 않는 한도 내에서 여러 가지 변형이 가능함은 자명하다. 그러므로 본 발명의 범위는 상술한 실시 예에 국한되어 정해져서는 안 되며, 후술하는 특허청구범위뿐만 아니라 이 발명의 특허청구범위와 균등한 것들에 의해 정해져야 한다.

  9. 제 8 항에 있어서,
    상기 전달 트랜지스터의 게이트 전압 레벨은
    상기 광 감지소자에서 광전자가 생성되는 동안에 제 1 전압에서 상기 제 1 전압보다 낮은 제 2 전압으로 변경되는 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법.
  10. 제 9 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 전압은 상기 전달 트랜지스터를 턴 온 시키는 전압보다 낮고 접지 전압보다 높은 것을 특징으로 하는 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법.
  11. 제 10 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 2 전압은 접지 전압인 것을 특징으로 하는 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법.
  12. 제 9 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 전압은 제 1 시간 동안 상기 전달 트랜지스터의 게이트에 인가되며, 상기 제 2 전압은 상기 제 1 시간 보다 짧은 제 2 시간 동안 상기 전달 트랜지스터의 게이트에 인가되는 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법.
  13. 제 12 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 시간 동안 생성된 광전자는 상기 광 감지소자에 축적되는 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법.
  14. 제 13 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 시간 동안 상기 광 감지소자에 축적된 광전자는 상기 부유 확산 노드에 전달되는 씨모스 이미지 센서의 동작 방법
  15. 제 1 및 제 2 시간 동안에 광전자를 생성하는 광 감지소자; 및
    전달 신호에 응답하여, 상기 광 감지소자 및 부유 확산 노드 사이에 전하 통로를 형성하는 전달 트랜지스터를 포함하며,
    상기 전달 신호의 전압 레벨은 상기 제 1 및 제 2 시간 동안 각각 다르게 설정되는 씨모스 이미지 센서.
  16. 제 15 항에 있어서,
    상기 전달 신호의 전압 레벨은
    상기 제 1 시간 동안 상기 전달 트랜지스터를 턴 온 시키는 전압보다 낮고 접지 전압보다 높은 제 1 전압이며, 상기 제 2 시간 동안 상기 제 1 전압보다 낮은 제 2 전압인 씨모스 이미지 센서.
  17. 제 16 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 시간은 상기 제 2 시간에 비하여 긴 것을 특징으로 하는 씨모스 이미지 센서.
  18. 제 15 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 시간에 생성된 광전자는 상기 광 감지소자의 웰(well)에 축적되는 씨모스 이미지 센서.
  19. 제 1 시간 및 상기 제 1 시간보다 짧은 제 2 시간 동안에 광전자를 생성하는 광 감지소자; 및
    상기 광 감지소자 및 부유 확산 노드 사이에 연결되며, 전달 신호에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성하는 제 1 트랜지스터를 포함하며,
    상기 부유 확산 노드 및 전원 전압 사이에 연결되며, 리셋 신호에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성하는 제 2 트랜지스터를 포함하며,
    상기 제 1 시간 동안 상기 전달 신호의 레벨은 상기 제 1 트랜지스터를 턴 온 시키는 전압보다 낮은 전달 조정 전압이고 상기 리셋 신호의 레벨은 상기 제 2 트랜지스터를 턴 온 시키는 리셋 활성화 전압인 씨모스 이미지 센서.
  20. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 2 시간 동안 상기 전달 신호의 레벨은 상기 전달 조정 전압보다 낮은 전압인 것을 특징으로 하는 씨모스 이미지 센서.
  21. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    전원 전압에 연결되며, 상기 부유 확산 노드의 전압에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성하는 제 3 트랜지스터; 및
    상기 제 3 트랜지스터에 연결되며, 선택 신호에 응답하여 전하 통로를 형성하는 제 4 트랜지스터를 포함하며,
    상기 선택 신호는 상기 제 1 및 제 2 시간 동안 접지 전압인 것을 특징으로 하는 씨모스 이미지 센서.
