Abstract
本発明は、光源と光学瞳とを共役な位置関係にしたときの、光源から光学瞳までのトータルでの結像性能を良好にして、観察映像の画質低下を回避することができる映像表示装置と、該映像表示装置を備えたHMDとを提供する。光源から射出された光は、絞りを通過した後、照明光学系の屈折面で屈折し、照明用反射面で反射した後、再度屈折面で屈折して表示素子に導かれる。表示素子からの映像光は、接眼光学系のホログラム光学素子に入射し、そこで回折反射されて光学瞳に導かれる。このとき、所定の条件式を満足することにより、照明用反射面の偏心配置によって発生する諸収差と、接眼用反射面の偏心配置によって発生する諸収差とを互いに相殺する方向に作用させることができるとともに、光源と光学瞳とが共役な位置関係のときに相殺しきれない諸収差を屈折面で補正することができる。
Description
本発明は、表示素子にて表示された映像を虚像として観察者に提供する映像表示装置と、その映像表示装置を備えたヘッドマウントディスプレイ(以下、HMDとも称する)とに関するものである。
従来から、表示素子に表示された映像を接眼光学系を介して観察者に観察させる映像表示装置が種々提案されている。中でも、特許文献1の映像表示装置は、図15に示すように、光源101からの照明光を照明光学系102(例えば偏心集光ミラー)を介して表示素子103(例えばLCD)に導き、表示素子103からの映像光を接眼光学系104(例えば偏心ミラー、半透過ミラー)で反射させて観察者の瞳に導く構成において、光源101を、照明光の照射を選択可能な複数の光源要素で構成し、観察者の瞳と略共役な位置にある光源要素を点灯させている。これにより、光源101を移動させる機械的な駆動手段を設けなくても、観察者は瞳の位置や視度(近視、遠視、乱視)によらずに良好な映像を観察することが可能となっている。
ところで、観察者が良好な映像を観察するためには、瞳位置で諸収差(コマ収差、像面湾曲、非点収差、歪曲収差等)が十分に補正されていることが必要である。接眼光学系単独で収差を良好に補正し、照明光学系単独で収差を良好に補正するように設計している場合でも、光源と観察者の瞳(接眼光学系の光学瞳)とを光学的に共役にした場合には、光源から光学瞳までの結像性能が保証されているわけではなく、瞳位置での諸収差を十分に補正できない場合がある。つまり、光源101から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像を考慮しない場合には、光源からの光線の光路は接眼光学系の設計時の光路とは異なる場合があり、接眼光学系の性能が十分に得られない場合がある。その結果、観察映像の画質低下を招いてしまう。
この点、特許文献1では、光源101と光学瞳Eとを共役にしたときの、光源101から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能については何ら言及されておらず、瞳位置での諸収差が十分に補正されているとは言えない。
本発明は、上記の問題点を解決するためになされたものであって、その目的は、光源と光学瞳とを共役な位置関係にしたときの、光源から光学瞳までのトータルでの結像性能を良好にして、観察映像の画質低下を回避することができる映像表示装置と、その映像表示装置を備えたHMDとを提供することにある。
本発明の映像表示装置は、光源と、入射光を変調して映像を表示する透過型の表示素子と、前記光源からの光を照明用反射面で反射させて前記表示素子に導く照明光学系と、前記表示素子からの映像光を接眼用反射面で反射させて光学瞳に導く接眼光学系とを備えた映像表示装置であって、前記光源の中心と、前記表示素子の表示領域の中心と、前記光学瞳の中心とを光学的に結ぶ軸を光軸とし、前記光軸を含む平面を主平面としたとき、前記光源と前記光学瞳とは、光学的に共役な位置関係にあり、前記照明用反射面および前記接眼用反射面は、前記主平面内で正のパワーを有しており、前記照明用反射面と光軸との交点での前記照明用反射面の垂線と、前記照明用反射面から前記表示素子に向かう光軸とのなす角をθillとし、ただし、前記交点を中心に前記垂線から前記光軸に向かう方向が前記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負とし、前記接眼用反射面と光軸との交点での前記接眼用反射面の垂線と、前記接眼用反射面から前記光学瞳に向かう光軸とのなす角をθviewとし、ただし、前記交点を中心に前記垂線から前記光軸に向かう方向が前記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負とし、前記接眼光学系における、前記接眼用反射面以外での反射による光軸の折り曲げ回数をnとしたとき、以下の条件式(1)(2)(3);

本発明のヘッドマウントディスプレイにおいて、前記支持手段は、前記接眼光学系の前記光学瞳の位置を観察者の瞳位置に合わせる位置調整を行った後に、観察者の頭部に対する前記接眼光学系の相対位置を固定する固定手段を有していることが望ましい。
条件式(1)(2)を満足することにより、照明用反射面および接眼用反射面は光軸に対して偏心して配置されるので、装置をコンパクトに構成することができる。また、条件式(3)を満足することにより、照明用反射面の偏心配置によって発生する諸収差と、接眼用反射面の偏心配置によって発生する諸収差とを互いに相殺する方向に作用させることができる。しかも、照明光学系は、光源からの光を屈折面で屈折させ、照明用反射面で反射させた後、再度屈折面で屈折させて表示素子に導くので、光源と光学瞳とが共役な位置関係のときに条件式(3)で相殺しきれない諸収差を上記屈折面で補正することができる。これにより、光源と光学瞳とが共役な位置関係であっても、光源から光学瞳までのトータルでの結像性能を良好に補正することができ、観察映像の画質が低下するのを回避することができる。
本発明の実施の一形態について、図面に基づいて説明すれば、以下の通りである。

接眼光学系4単独で、映像を観察するための諸収差(球面収差、非点収差、コマ収差、歪曲収差等)が補正されていても、光源から表示素子14の間で独立に収差補正された照明光学系とこの接眼光学系4とを組み合わせたとき、光源と共役に配置される光学瞳面では、良好に収差補正されていない場合が多い。特に、照明光学系として小型化のために偏心光学系を採用した場合、接眼光学系4との組み合わせによって、光源から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの収差補正が不十分となる場合が多い。なお、ここで言う偏心とは、ミラーの曲率中心が光軸上にない(光軸からずれた位置にある)ことを意味する。また、上記の光軸とは、表示素子14の表示領域の中心と光学瞳Eの中心とを光学的に結ぶ軸を指すものとする。
ここで、図2(b)(c)(d)は、図2(a)の構成に、さらに、光源11からの光を表示素子14に導く照明光学系13(例えば凹面ミラー)を組み合わせた映像表示装置1の各光路を模式的に示す説明図である。ただし、照明光学系13および接眼光学系4は、それぞれ偏心配置されている。
なお、便宜上、照明光学系13において、ミラーの光軸との交点における垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、上記交点から光学瞳Eに向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角度をθill(°)とする。ただし、上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が、入射面内で反時計回りとなる方向を正、時計回りとなる方向を負としている。なお、入射面とは、ミラーとの交点における入射光の光軸と出射光の光軸とを含む面を指す。また、接眼光学系4において、ミラーの光軸との交点における垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、上記交点から光学瞳Eに向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角度をθview(°)とする。ただし、上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が入射面内で反時計回りとなる方向を正、時計回りとなる方向を負としている。
図2(b)の映像表示装置1では、照明光学系13における偏心方向(θillの符号は正)と、接眼光学系4における偏心方向(θviewの符号は正)とが同一方向となっているので、照明光学系13の偏心配置によって発生する収差(ここでは光学瞳位置での収差で瞳収差とも称する)と接眼光学系4の偏心配置によって発生する収差(瞳収差)とを互いに打ち消し合う方向に作用させる(補正する)ことができない。しかし、図2(c)(d)の映像表示装置1では、照明光学系13における偏心方向(θillの符号は負)と、接眼光学系4における偏心方向(θviewの符号は正)とが反対方向となっているので、両光学系の収差を互いに打ち消し合う方向に作用させることが可能である。
ただし、図2(c)のように、照明光学系13を反射面のみで構成する場合は、光源11と光学瞳Eとが共役な位置関係である場合に、両光学系の収差を完全に相殺することが困難である。これに対して、図2(d)の映像表示装置1では、照明光学系13を裏面反射ミラーで構成している。つまり、照明光学系13に反射面のみならず、その表側に屈折面を設けている。これにより、照明光学系13と接眼光学系4とで相殺しきれなかった収差を上記屈折面で補正することが可能となる。したがって、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能を良好に補正することができ、観察映像の画質が低下するのを回避することができる。
なお、照明光学系13を裏面反射ミラーとせずに通常のミラーとし、別途、光学素子を光路中に追加してこれを偏心配置することにより、収差補正を行う方法も考えられる。しかし、これでは部品点数が多くなり、また、素子の位置精度を十分に保ったまま保持する機構が必要となるので、大型化したりコストアップすることが考えられる。上記のように照明光学系13を裏面反射ミラーで構成することにより、このような部品点数の増大や大型化を避けながら十分な収差補正が可能になる。
なお、図2(b)(c)(d)では、説明を理解しやすくするために、接眼光学系4が凹面ミラーのみで構成されている例を示したが、例えば、接眼光学系4が上記の凹面ミラー以外に反射面を1枚有し、その反射面で映像光の光路を1回折り曲げる構成とした場合、照明光学系13における偏心方向と接眼光学系4における偏心方向とが、光路を折り曲げた状態では入射面内で同一方向であっても、光路を展開したときには反対方向となる。接眼光学系4が凹面ミラー以外の反射面を奇数枚有している場合は、これと同様に考えることができる。したがって、照明光学系13および接眼光学系4の収差を互いに打ち消し合う方向に作用させるためには、接眼光学系4の凹面ミラー以外の反射面の枚数、すなわち、光路の折り曲げ回数も考慮して、上記両者の偏心方向を設定する必要がある。
以上のポイントを踏まえ、本発明の映像表示装置1およびHMDについて以下に説明する。
(HMDについて)
図3は、本発明の映像表示装置1を適用可能なHMDの概略の構成を示す斜視図である。HMDは、映像表示装置1と、支持部材2とで構成されている。

映像表示装置1は、映像を生成してそれを観察者に虚像として提供するとともに、観察者に外界像をシースルーで観察させるものである。この映像表示装置1は、光源11や表示素子14(図1参照)を収容する筐体3に接眼光学系4を一体化させて構成されている。光源11や表示素子14を制御するための信号や駆動電力は、筐体3を貫通するケーブル5を介して各部に供給される。接眼光学系4は、全体として眼鏡の一方のレンズ(図3では右眼用レンズ)のような形状をなしている。なお、眼鏡の左眼用レンズに相当するレンズ6は、ダミーレンズである。
支持部材2は、映像表示装置1を観察者の眼前で支持する支持手段であり、例えば眼鏡のフレーム、テンプルに相当する部材の集合で構成されている。この支持部材2を観察者の頭部に固定することにより、映像表示装置1は観察者の眼前の位置で正確に保持され、観察者は映像表示装置1から提供される映像をハンズフリーで長時間安定して観察することができる。なお、本実施形態では、支持部材2は、観察者の右眼に対応して1個の映像表示装置1を支持しているが、観察者の両眼に対応して2個の映像表示装置1を支持してもよい。
また、支持部材2は、固定機構7を有している。固定機構7は、接眼光学系4によって形成される光学瞳(射出瞳)の位置を観察者の瞳(瞳孔、虹彩)の位置に合わせる位置調整を行った後に、観察者の頭部に対する接眼光学系4の相対位置を固定する固定手段であり、観察者の鼻と当接して移動可能な右鼻当て7Rおよび左鼻当て7Lと、これらをロックするロック部とを有して構成されている。支持手段2が固定機構7を有していることにより、光学瞳の位置調整後、観察者は、光学瞳の位置にて、良好な映像を長時間にわたって確実にかつ安定して観察することができる。
(映像表示装置について)
次に、映像表示装置1の詳細について、実施例1および2として説明する。

<実施例1>
図1は、実施例1の映像表示装置1の概略の構成を示す断面図である。映像表示装置1は、光源11と、絞り12と、照明光学系13と、表示素子14と、接眼光学系4とを有している。光源11から表示素子14までの各光学要素は、筐体3(図3参照)内に収容されている。また、接眼光学系4の一部(後述する接眼プリズム21の一部)も、筐体3内に位置している。
図1は、実施例1の映像表示装置1の概略の構成を示す断面図である。映像表示装置1は、光源11と、絞り12と、照明光学系13と、表示素子14と、接眼光学系4とを有している。光源11から表示素子14までの各光学要素は、筐体3(図3参照)内に収容されている。また、接眼光学系4の一部(後述する接眼プリズム21の一部)も、筐体3内に位置している。
ここで、以下での説明の便宜上、方向を以下のように定義しておく。まず、光源11の中心と、表示素子14の表示領域の中心と、接眼光学系4によって形成される光学瞳Eの中心とを光学的に結ぶ軸を光軸とする。そして、光源11から光学瞳Eまでの光路を展開したときの光軸方向をZ方向とする。また、上記光軸を含む面を主平面と称する。本実施形態では、後述する照明光反射面13bおよび接眼光学系4のホログラム光学素子23によって光軸が折り曲げられるので、主平面は一義的に決まる。
また、ホログラム光学素子23の光軸入射面に垂直な方向をX方向とし、ZX平面に垂直な方向をY方向とする。なお、ホログラム光学素子23の光軸入射面とは、ホログラム光学素子23における入射光の光軸と反射光の光軸とを含む平面、すなわち、YZ平面を指す。すなわち、光軸入射面は、上記した主平面でもある。
光源11は、例えば、R(赤)、G(緑)、B(青)の3原色に対応する波長の光を出射するRGB一体型のLEDで構成されている。光源11は、光学瞳Eと共役な位置関係となるように配置されている。これにより、光源11からの光利用効率が高くなり(光源11からの光が効率よく光学瞳Eに入射し)、明るい映像を観察者に観察させることができる。言い換えれば、低消費電力の映像表示装置1を実現することができる。絞り12は、光源11に近接して設けられている。
光源11は、RGBの各発光部を有する光源群を1組備えたもので構成されてもよいし、2組以上備えたもので構成されてもよい。本実施形態では、光源11は、上記光源群を2組備えたもので構成されている。より詳しくは、以下の通りである。
図4は、光源11の照明光学系13側からの平面図である。光源11は、2つの光源群11P・11Qで構成されている。光源群11Pは、RGBの3色の光をそれぞれ発光する3つの発光部11R1・11G1・11B1を有するRGB一体型のLEDで構成されている。また、光源群11Qも同様に、RGBの3色の光をそれぞれ発光する3つの発光部11R2・11G2・11B2を有するRGB一体型のLEDで構成されている。
また、各光源群11P・11Qの各発光部は、X方向に並んで配置されているが、さらに、光軸入射面に対して各色ごとに面対称となるように配置されている。より詳細には、発光部11R1・11R2が光軸入射面に近い位置で面対称となるように配置され、そのX方向外側に発光部11G1・11G2が光軸入射面に対して面対称となるように配置され、さらにそのX方向外側に発光部11B1・11B2が光軸入射面に対して面対称となるように配置されている。つまり、各光源群11P・11Qでは、光軸入射面側からX方向外側に向かうにつれて出射光の波長が短くなるような順序で、各発光部が配置されている。
なお、光源11が2組の光源群11P・11Qで構成されるときの光源11の中心とは、X方向に並ぶ発光部11R1・11R2の中間の位置を指す。ちなみに、光源11が1組の光源群で構成されるときの光源11の中心とは、例えばX方向に並ぶRGBの各発光部のうちで真ん中の発光部(例えばG光を出射する発光部)の位置を指す。
照明光学系13は、光源11からの光を照明用反射面13bで反射させて表示素子14に導く光学系である。本実施形態では、照明光学系13は、表面に屈折面13aを有し、裏面に照明用反射面13bを有する裏面反射ミラーで構成されている。
屈折面13aおよび照明用反射面13bは、主平面内で正のパワーを有し、かつ、光軸に対して偏心して配置されているとともに、光源11側および表示素子14側に対して凹となる凹面で構成されている。ここで、図5は、実施例1の映像表示装置1の斜視図である。同図に示すように、照明光学系13の屈折面13aおよび照明用反射面13bは、回転非対称な面で構成されている。より具体的には、屈折面13aは、主平面と平行な面内でのみ光学パワーを有するシリンドリカル面となっており、照明用反射面13bは、主平面と平行な面内でのみ光学パワーを有するシリンドリカル非球面となっている。なお、屈折面13aおよび照明用反射面13bは、回転対称な球面または回転対称な非球面であってもよい。
なお、照明光学系13と表示素子14との間の光路中に、入射光を一方向(例えばX方向)に拡散する一方向拡散板をさらに備えていてもよい。一方向拡散板を配置することにより、光源11からのRGBの各色光をX方向で混ぜることができるので、各発光部の位置が異なることに起因する色ムラを低減することができるとともに、一方向拡散板での拡散によって光学瞳Eを一方向に拡大することができる。
なお、一方向拡散板を配置した場合、光源11と光学瞳Eとは、位置関係が共役であっても、X方向では光学的に共役とはならないが、Y方向では依然として光学的に共役である。したがって、Y方向については、光源11からの光を効率よく光学瞳Eに導くことができる。
なお、上記の一方向拡散板の代わりに、入射光を全方向に拡散する通常の拡散板を配置してもよい。この場合、拡散板の位置を光源位置(2次光源位置)と考え、その光源位置と光学瞳Eとを共役な位置関係に設定してもよい。
表示素子14は、入射光を画像データに応じて変調して映像を表示するものであり、例えば透過型のLCDで構成されている。表示素子14は、矩形の表示画面の長辺方向がX方向となり、短辺方向がY方向となるように配置されている。
接眼光学系4は、表示素子14からの映像光を接眼用反射面で反射させて光学瞳Eに導くとともに、外界像の光(外光)を光学瞳Eに導く光学系であり、YZ面に対して面対称に形成されている。この接眼光学系4は、接眼プリズム21と、偏向プリズム22と、ホログラム光学素子23とを有して構成されている。なお、ホログラム光学素子23が上記の接眼用反射面を構成している。
接眼プリズム21は、表示素子14からの映像光を内部で全反射させてホログラム光学素子23を介して光学瞳Eに導く一方、外光を透過させて光学瞳Eに導く導光部材であり、偏向プリズム22とともに、例えばアクリル系樹脂で構成されている。この接眼プリズム21は、平行平板の下端部を楔状にし、上端部を厚くした形状で構成されている。また、接眼プリズム21の上端面は、映像光の入射面としての面21aとなっており、前後方向に位置する2面は、互いに平行な面21b・21cとなっている。
偏向プリズム22は、平面視で略U字型の平行平板で構成されており(図3参照)、接眼プリズム21の下端部および両側面部(左右の各端面)と貼り合わされたときに、接眼プリズム21と一体となって略平行平板となるものである。偏向プリズム22は、ホログラム光学素子23を挟むように接眼プリズム21と接着して設けられている。これにより、観察者が接眼プリズム21を介して観察する外界像に歪みが生じるのを防止することができる。
つまり、例えば、偏向プリズム22を設けない場合、外光は接眼プリズム21の楔状の下端部を透過するときに屈折するので、接眼プリズム21を介して観察される外界像に歪みが生じる。しかし、接眼プリズム21に偏向プリズム22を接合して一体的な略平行平板を形成することで、外光が接眼プリズム21の楔状の下端部を透過するときの屈折を偏向プリズム22でキャンセルすることができる。その結果、シースルーで観察される外界像に歪みが生じるのを防止することができる。
ホログラム光学素子23は、表示素子14からの映像光を回折反射させて光学瞳Eに導くと同時に、外光を透過させて光学瞳Eに導く体積位相型で反射型のホログラム光学素子であり、接眼プリズム21において偏向プリズム22との接合面に設けられている。体積位相型の反射型ホログラム光学素子は、反射波長域が狭く、外光の透過率が高いので、これを映像光と外光との光路を合成するためのコンバイナとして用いることにより、観察者は、表示映像(虚像)を観察しながら、外界像をシースルーで観察することが可能となる。ホログラム光学素子23は、主平面内で正のパワーを有している。
次に、上記構成の映像表示装置1の動作について説明する。光源11から射出された光は、絞り12を通過した後、照明光学系13の屈折面13aで屈折し、照明用反射面13bで反射した後、再度屈折面13aで屈折して表示素子14に導かれる。表示素子14に入射した光は、そこで変調されて映像光として出射される。表示素子14からの映像光は、接眼光学系4の接眼プリズム21の内部に面21aから入射し、面21b・21cの間で複数回全反射されて、ホログラム光学素子23に入射する。
ホログラム光学素子23は、光源11の発光波長に対応する波長の光のみに対して回折素子として機能する波長選択性を有しており、上記波長の光に対してのみ凹面反射面として機能するように設計されている。したがって、ホログラム光学素子23に入射した光は、そこで回折反射されて光学瞳Eに達する。よって、光学瞳Eの位置に観察者の瞳Pを合わせると、観察者は、表示素子14に表示された映像の拡大虚像を観察することができる。
一方、接眼プリズム21、偏向プリズム22およびホログラム光学素子23は、外光をほとんど全て透過させるので、観察者は外界像を観察することができる。したがって、表示素子14に表示された映像の虚像は、外界像の一部に重なって観察されることになる。
以上のように、照明光学系13の照明用反射面13bおよび接眼光学系4の接眼用反射面(ホログラム光学素子23)は、主平面内で正のパワーを有しているので、装置を構成する各光学部材の配置の自由度を高めて装置を容易に小型化することができる。さらに、透過型の表示素子14を用いる場合、照明光学系13は表示素子14に対して接眼光学系4とは反対側に配置しなければならず、装置が大型化する要因となり得る。しかし、照明光学系13の照明用反射面13bで光路を折り畳む構成とすることにより、透過型の表示素子14を用いる構成でも、装置をコンパクトに構成することができる。
また、照明光学系13の屈折面13aおよび照明用反射面13bは、回転非対称な面であるので、主平面とそれに垂直な平面とで補正すべき収差が異なるときに、それぞれの平面で収差を独立に補正することができる。特に、屈折面13aおよび照明用反射面13bは、主平面と平行な面内で光学パワーを有するシリンドリカル面であり、一方向に光学パワーを有する照明光学系13となるので、光学瞳Eの形状を楕円状にすることができる。したがって、本発明の映像表示装置1をHMDに適用したときに、観察者の瞳Pの移動の少ない上下方向に狭く、左右方向に広い光学瞳Eを得ることができる。この場合、光学瞳Eの位置では、上下方向には光源11からの光が集光して明るい映像が観察可能であり、左右方向に光学瞳Eが広いので、眼幅の異なる複数の観察者にも容易に対応することが可能となる。
また、光源11において、照明光学系13が光学パワーを持たないX方向に配置されたRGBの各発光部は、光軸入射面(主平面)に対して対称になるように配置されている。これにより、RGBの照明光がほぼ均等に混ざり、観察者は色ムラの低減された映像を観察することができる。また、RGBの各発光部が並ぶ方向にのみ拡散性のある一方向拡散板を光路中に挿入すれば、より均一にRGBの照明光を混合することができる。
(条件式について)
接眼光学系4においては、表示素子14に表示された映像を観察者が良好に観察することができるように、諸収差(コマ収差、像面湾曲、非点収差、歪曲収差等)が補正されている。しかし、接眼光学系4単独で、光源11と共役な光学瞳Eにおける収差(瞳収差)、つまり、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの収差(結像性能)が補正されているわけではない。本実施形態では、上述したように照明光学系13を裏面反射ミラーで構成するとともに、以下のように条件式を満足させることにより、そのようなトータルでの収差を補正するようにしている。
接眼光学系4においては、表示素子14に表示された映像を観察者が良好に観察することができるように、諸収差(コマ収差、像面湾曲、非点収差、歪曲収差等)が補正されている。しかし、接眼光学系4単独で、光源11と共役な光学瞳Eにおける収差(瞳収差)、つまり、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの収差(結像性能)が補正されているわけではない。本実施形態では、上述したように照明光学系13を裏面反射ミラーで構成するとともに、以下のように条件式を満足させることにより、そのようなトータルでの収差を補正するようにしている。
図6は、実施例1の映像表示装置1におけるθillおよびθviewをそれぞれ示す説明図である。θillは、照明用反射面13bと光軸との交点での照明用反射面13bの垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、照明用反射面13bから表示素子14に向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角(°)である。ただし、上記交点を中心に上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負としている。一方、θviewは、接眼用反射面を構成するホログラム光学素子23と光軸との交点でのホログラム光学素子23の垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、ホログラム光学素子23から光学瞳Eに向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角(°)である。ただし、上記交点を中心に上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が上記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負としている。
接眼光学系4におけるホログラム光学素子23以外での反射による光軸の折り曲げ回数をnとしたとき、映像表示装置1は、以下の条件式(1)(2)(3);

条件式(1)(2)を満足することにより、照明用反射面13bおよびホログラム光学素子23は、光軸に対して偏心して配置されることになるので、装置をコンパクトに構成することができる。なお、ホログラム光学素子23の偏心配置については、ホログラム光学素子23を凹面反射面と考えることにより、上述した偏心の定義に即して考えることができる。
また、条件式(3)を満足することにより、照明用反射面13bの偏心配置によって発生する諸収差と、ホログラム光学素子23の偏心配置によって発生する諸収差とを互いに相殺する方向に作用させることができる。しかも、照明光学系13は、光源11からの光を屈折面13aで屈折させ、照明用反射面13bで反射させた後、再度屈折面13aで屈折させて表示素子14に導くので、光源11と光学瞳Eとが共役な位置関係のときに条件式(3)で相殺しきれない諸収差を屈折面13aで補正することができる。これにより、光源11と光学瞳Eとが共役な位置関係であっても、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能を良好に補正することができ(光学瞳の位置での諸収差を十分に補正することができ)、観察映像の画質が低下するのを回避することができる。
また、体積位相型で反射型のホログラム光学素子は、角度選択性が高く、設計値から外れた角度でホログラム光学素子に光が入射すると、その光についての回折効率は急激に低下する。一方、上記のように照明光学系13に屈折面13aを設けることにより、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能を良好に補正することができるが、このことは、接眼用反射面を構成するホログラム光学素子23に入射する光の入射角度を設計値に近づけていることを意味する。したがって、接眼用反射面を体積位相型で反射型のホログラム光学素子23で構成した場合でも、表示素子14の画面全体からホログラム光学素子23に到達する光を全て効率よく回折反射させて光学瞳Eに導くことができ、光学瞳Eの位置にて、明るく高品位な映像を観察者に観察させることができる。
特に、実施例1では、ホログラム光学素子23からなる接眼用反射面は光軸に対して偏心して配置されているため、設計値から外れた角度でホログラム光学素子23に光が入射したときの回折効率の低下は著しい。このことを考慮すると、照明光学系13に屈折面13aを設ける構成は、接眼用反射面を体積位相型で反射型のホログラム光学素子23で構成した場合に非常に有効となる。
また、上述したように、照明光学系13の屈折面13aおよび照明用反射面13bは、光源11側および表示素子14側に対して凹となる凹面である。つまり、照明光学系13は、メニスカスタイプの裏面反射ミラーである。これにより、照明光学系13単独で発生する瞳収差を小さく抑えることができるとともに、偏心配置の凹面からなる照明用反射面13bで発生し、条件式(3)で相殺しきれなかった諸収差(瞳収差)を、偏心配置の凹面からなる屈折面13aで確実に補正することができる。その結果、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能をより良好に補正することができる。
なお、ホログラム光学素子23が入射光線に対して傾いて配置される場合(光軸に対して偏心して配置される場合)は、回折による倍率色収差の影響も大きくなるが、RGBのそれぞれについて光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能を良好に補正しておくことにより、画面内の色ムラの影響を低減することができる。
(製造光学系について)
次に、上記したホログラム光学素子23の作製方法について説明する。図7は、ホログラム光学素子23を作製する製造光学系の概略の構成を示す断面図である。反射型のホログラム光学素子23は、RGBのそれぞれについて、レーザー光を2光束に分離してそれぞれ参照光および物体光とし、基板(ここでは接眼プリズム21)上のホログラム感光材料23aを基板側およびその反対側から2光束(参照光、物体光)で露光し、これら2光束による干渉縞をホログラム感光材料23aに記録することにより作製される。より具体的には、以下の通りである。なお、ここでは、観察者の眼を配置する側の光を参照光、反対側からの光を物体光と呼ぶことにする。また、RGBのレーザーの発光波長は、例えば、R:647nm、G:532nm、B:476nmである。
次に、上記したホログラム光学素子23の作製方法について説明する。図7は、ホログラム光学素子23を作製する製造光学系の概略の構成を示す断面図である。反射型のホログラム光学素子23は、RGBのそれぞれについて、レーザー光を2光束に分離してそれぞれ参照光および物体光とし、基板(ここでは接眼プリズム21)上のホログラム感光材料23aを基板側およびその反対側から2光束(参照光、物体光)で露光し、これら2光束による干渉縞をホログラム感光材料23aに記録することにより作製される。より具体的には、以下の通りである。なお、ここでは、観察者の眼を配置する側の光を参照光、反対側からの光を物体光と呼ぶことにする。また、RGBのレーザーの発光波長は、例えば、R:647nm、G:532nm、B:476nmである。
まず、RGBのそれぞれについて、レーザー光をビームスプリッタで2光束に分離した後、それぞれの光束(参照光、物体光)を点光源31・32から発散する発散光となるように集光する。RGBの参照光は、同一位置の点光源31から出射される球面波であり、接眼プリズム21側からホログラム感光材料23aに入射する。このとき、RGBの点光源31は、映像観察時の接眼光学系4の光学瞳Eの中心に位置する。なお、使用状態において、光源11(LED)からのRGBのピーク波長の光がホログラム光学素子23にて回折されたときに同じ点光源31の位置に重なるように、使用時に用いる光源11のピーク波長と製造時に用いるレーザーの発光波長とのずれ量に応じて、接眼光学系4の光学瞳E上でRGBの各点光源をずらして配置してもよい。
一方、RGBの物体光は、同一位置の点光源32から出射される発散光であり、自由曲面ミラー33によって所定の波面に整形され、反射ミラー34で反射され、色補正プリズム35を介して接眼プリズム21とは反対側からホログラム感光材料23aに入射する。このとき、色補正プリズム35の面35aは、使用時に用いられる接眼光学系4の接眼プリズム21の面21aでの映像光の屈折に起因して発生する色収差を打ち消すように、その角度が決定されている。なお、色補正プリズム35は、表面反射によるゴーストを防止するためにホログラム感光材料23aに対して密着して配置されるか、エマルジョンオイルなどを介して配置されることが望ましい。
以上のようにして、ホログラム感光材料23aに対して参照光と物体光とを照射することにより、これら2光束による干渉縞がホログラム感光材料23aに記録され、ホログラム光学素子23が作製される。
このように、参照光および物体光の2光束のうち、接眼プリズム21側からホログラム感光材料23aに入射する光束(参照光)を生成する点光源31の位置は、映像観察時における接眼光学系4の光学瞳Eと同じ位置である。これにより、映像観察時に観察者の瞳Pを光学瞳Eの中心に配置すれば、観察者は輝度ムラ、色ムラのない映像を観察することができる。特に、本発明のように、光源11と光学瞳Eとを共役な位置関係としたときの瞳収差を良好に補正することにより、全ての画角において、照明光がホログラム光学素子23で確実に回折反射されて観察者の瞳Pに到達するので、観察者は、画面全域にわたって明るく高品位な映像を観察することができる。
<実施例2>
次に、実施例2の映像表示装置1について説明する。図8は、実施例2の映像表示装置1の概略の構成を示す断面図である。この映像表示装置1は、接眼光学系4を接眼光学系41に置き換えた以外は、実施例1と全く同様の構成である。なお、図8では、絞り12の図示を省略している。

接眼光学系41は、接眼プリズムのみで構成されている。この接眼プリズムは、自由曲面からなる3つの面41a・41b・41cを有する自由曲面プリズムである。面41a・41b・41cは、それぞれ、映像光の入射面、全反射兼透過面、接眼用反射面としてのハーフミラー面(凹面反射面)である。つまり、表示素子14からの映像光は、接眼光学系41の面41aを介して内部に入射し、面41bで全反射した後、面41cで反射集光され、面41bを透過して光学瞳Eに導かれる。
図9は、実施例2の映像表示装置1におけるθillおよびθviewをそれぞれ示す説明図である。θillは、照明用反射面13bと光軸との交点での照明用反射面13bの垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、照明用反射面13bから表示素子14に向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角(°)である。ただし、上記交点を中心に上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負としている。一方、θviewは、接眼用反射面を構成する面41cと光軸との交点での面41cの垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、面41cから光学瞳Eに向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角(°)である。ただし、上記交点を中心に上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が上記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負としている。
接眼光学系41における面41c以外での反射による光軸の折り曲げ回数をnとしたとき、実施例2では、θill=17.6°、θview=19.7°、n=1(面41bでの反射が1回)である。したがって、実施例2の映像表示装置1も、上述した条件式(1)(2)(3)を満足しており、光源11と光学瞳Eとが共役な位置関係であっても、光源11から光学瞳Eまでのトータルでの結像性能を良好に補正することができ、観察映像の画質が低下するのを回避することができると言える。
<比較例>
次に、比較例について説明する。図10は、比較例の映像表示装置51の概略の構成を示す断面図である。この映像表示装置51は、照明光学系13を照明光学系52に置き換えた以外は、実施例1の映像表示装置1と同様の構成である。照明光学系52は、表面に照明用反射面52aを形成した凹面シリンドリカルミラーで構成されている。すなわち、照明光学系52は、実施例1で示したような屈折面を有していない。このように、照明光学系が屈折面を有していない点では、比較例の映像表示装置51は、従来の図15で示した映像表示装置に対応していると言える。
次に、比較例について説明する。図10は、比較例の映像表示装置51の概略の構成を示す断面図である。この映像表示装置51は、照明光学系13を照明光学系52に置き換えた以外は、実施例1の映像表示装置1と同様の構成である。照明光学系52は、表面に照明用反射面52aを形成した凹面シリンドリカルミラーで構成されている。すなわち、照明光学系52は、実施例1で示したような屈折面を有していない。このように、照明光学系が屈折面を有していない点では、比較例の映像表示装置51は、従来の図15で示した映像表示装置に対応していると言える。
上記の構成では、光源11からの光は、照明光学系52の照明用反射面52aで反射されて表示素子14に入射し、そこで変調されて映像光として接眼光学系4に導かれる。以降の光路は、実施例1と同様である。
図11は、比較例の映像表示装置51におけるθillおよびθviewをそれぞれ示す説明図である。θillは、照明用反射面52aと光軸との交点での照明用反射面52aの垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、照明用反射面52aから表示素子14に向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角(°)である。ただし、上記交点を中心に上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負としている。一方、θviewは、接眼用反射面を構成するホログラム光学素子23と光軸との交点でのホログラム光学素子23の垂線(図中、破線の矢印で示す)と、ホログラム光学素子23から光学瞳Eに向かう光軸(図中、実線の矢印で示す)とのなす角(°)である。ただし、上記交点を中心に上記垂線から上記光軸に向かう方向が上記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負としている。
接眼光学系4におけるホログラム光学素子23以外での反射による光軸の折り曲げ回数をnとしたとき、比較例では、θill=24.9°、θview=27.4°、n=3(面21bでの反射が2回、面21cでの反射が1回)である。したがって、比較例の映像表示装置51も、上述した条件式(1)(2)(3)を満足しているが、実施例1と比較すると、瞳収差の補正不足が生じるために光学性能は劣る(後述の収差図参照)。光学瞳E上における光源像の結像性能が十分でないときは、言い換えれば、反射型のホログラム光学素子23への入射光線が設計値(設計した入射角度)から若干ずれているということを意味しており、画面内の輝度ムラや、周辺での色ムラが発生しやすくなる。なお、光源11の直後に絞り12を配置して不要な光をカットする工夫をしても、瞳収差補正不足による画質の劣化を大幅に改善することは困難である。
(収差図について)
図12~図14は、実施例1、実施例2および比較例の構成において、光源(LED)が出射するG光のピーク波長(例えば525nm)の光について、光学瞳Eでの像を光源11の位置に結像させたときのYZ平面(Y-FAN)での横収差図をそれぞれ示している。縦軸は、瞳位置でのY座標が、y=-1.5mm、1.5mm、0mm(瞳中心)の点の光源位置での収差(例えばコマ収差)を示し、単位はmmである。横軸は、絞りまたは表示素子において各光線が通過する位置(座標)に対応している。
図12~図14は、実施例1、実施例2および比較例の構成において、光源(LED)が出射するG光のピーク波長(例えば525nm)の光について、光学瞳Eでの像を光源11の位置に結像させたときのYZ平面(Y-FAN)での横収差図をそれぞれ示している。縦軸は、瞳位置でのY座標が、y=-1.5mm、1.5mm、0mm(瞳中心)の点の光源位置での収差(例えばコマ収差)を示し、単位はmmである。横軸は、絞りまたは表示素子において各光線が通過する位置(座標)に対応している。
これらの図より、実施例1および2の構成では、各瞳位置に対する光源位置での収差が良好に補正されていることがわかるが、比較例では、収差が十分に補正されていないことがわかる。このことから、条件式(1)(2)(3)を全て満足していても、条件式(3)では相殺しきれない収差を補正する屈折面を照明光学系に設けなければ、光源と光学瞳とを共役な位置関係にしたときのトータルでの収差を補正することはできないと言える。よって、照明光学系に屈折面を設ける実施例1および2の構成によれば、光源と光学瞳とが共役な位置関係であっても、光源から光学瞳までのトータルでの収差を良好に補正して、観察映像の画質が低下するのを回避することができる。
なお、以上の実施例1および2では、HMDに好適な映像表示装置について種々説明したが、実施例1および2の映像表示装置は、例えばヘッドアップディスプレイ(HUD)などの他の装置にも適用することが可能である。
本発明の映像表示装置は、例えばHMDやHUDに利用可能である。

Claims (8)
- 光源と、
入射光を変調して映像を表示する透過型の表示素子と、
前記光源からの光を照明用反射面で反射させて前記表示素子に導く照明光学系と、
前記表示素子からの映像光を接眼用反射面で反射させて光学瞳に導く接眼光学系とを備えた映像表示装置であって、
前記光源の中心と、前記表示素子の表示領域の中心と、前記光学瞳の中心とを光学的に結ぶ軸を光軸とし、前記光軸を含む平面を主平面としたとき、
前記光源と前記光学瞳とは、光学的に共役な位置関係にあり、
前記照明用反射面および前記接眼用反射面は、前記主平面内で正のパワーを有しており、
前記照明用反射面と光軸との交点での前記照明用反射面の垂線と、前記照明用反射面から前記表示素子に向かう光軸とのなす角をθillとし、ただし、前記交点を中心に前記垂線から前記光軸に向かう方向が前記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負とし、
前記接眼用反射面と光軸との交点での前記接眼用反射面の垂線と、前記接眼用反射面から前記光学瞳に向かう光軸とのなす角をθviewとし、ただし、前記交点を中心に前記垂線から前記光軸に向かう方向が前記主平面内で反時計回りとなる場合を正、時計回りとなる場合を負とし、
前記接眼光学系における、前記接眼用反射面以外での反射による光軸の折り曲げ回数をnとしたとき、
以下の条件式(1)(2)(3);

を満足し、
前記照明光学系は、前記主平面内で正のパワーを有し、かつ、光軸に対して偏心した屈折面をさらに有しており、前記光源からの光を前記屈折面で屈折させ、前記照明用反射面で反射させた後、再度前記屈折面で屈折させて前記表示素子に導くことを特徴とする映像表示装置。 - 前記接眼用反射面は、体積位相型で反射型のホログラム光学素子で構成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の映像表示装置。
- 前記ホログラム光学素子は、基板上のホログラム感光材料を基板側およびその反対側から2光束で露光し、これら2光束による干渉縞を前記ホログラム感光材料に記録することにより作製されており、
前記2光束のうちで前記基板側から前記ホログラム感光材料に入射する光束を生成する点光源の位置は、映像観察時における前記接眼光学系の光学瞳と同じ位置であることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の映像表示装置。 - 前記照明光学系の前記屈折面および前記照明用反射面は、前記光源側および前記表示素子側に対して凹となる凹面であることを特徴とする請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の映像表示装置。
- 前記照明光学系の前記屈折面および前記照明用反射面は、回転非対称な面であることを特徴とする請求項1から4のいずれかに記載の映像表示装置。
- 前記照明光学系の前記屈折面および前記照明用反射面は、前記主平面と平行な面内で光学パワーを有するシリンドリカル面であることを特徴とする請求項5に記載の映像表示装置。
- 請求項1から6のいずれかに記載の映像表示装置と、
前記映像表示装置を観察者の眼前で支持する支持手段とを有していることを特徴とするヘッドマウントディスプレイ。 - 前記支持手段は、前記接眼光学系の前記光学瞳の位置を観察者の瞳位置に合わせる位置調整を行った後に、観察者の頭部に対する前記接眼光学系の相対位置を固定する固定手段を有していることを特徴とする請求項7に記載のヘッドマウントディスプレイ。
