Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for automatic injection of a product ensuring the user that the product has been substantially completely injected.
- the distal end of a component or of a device is to be understood as meaning the end furthest from the user's hand during proper use and the proximal end is to be understood as meaning the end closest to the user's hand during proper use.
- the distal direction is intended for defining the direction of the injection
- the proximal direction for defining the opposite direction to the direction of injection.
- the present invention meets this need by proposing a device for automatic injection of a product into an injection site, said device producing a sensitive indicator when the injection is completed.
- the present invention relates to a device for automatic injection of a product into an injection site, the product being carried by a container having an open proximal end and a substantially closed distal end carrying a needle to provide an outlet port for the product from the container, and a piston provided in the container and distally movable with respect to the container, the distal movement of the piston causing the product to be expelled from the container through the needle thereby realising the injection of said product, said device comprising:
- said device being characterized in that it further comprises
- - piston position indicating means designed for producing a sensitive indicator when said piston is near said distal end of the container and the product is substantially completely expelled from the container.
- the device of the invention allows the user to be clearly informed of the end of injection. To this effect, the patient does not need to be concentrated on the sound produced by the device.
- sensitive indicator in the present application is meant a visual indicator, ie a change that can be perceived by the eye, and/or a tactile indicator, ie a change that is tactile and can be perceived by touching, that can be felt.
- the sensitive indicator may be a visual indicator; in such a case, the user is allowed to see a change in the device, said change informing him that the injection of the product is substantially completed.
- the sensitive indicator may be a tactile indicator ; in such a case, the user is allowed to feel a change in the device, like a vibration for instance, informing him that the injection of the product is substantially completed.
- the sensitive indicator may be both visual and tactile ; in such a case, the user is allowed to see and feel a change in the device, informing him that the injection of the product is substantially completed.
- said piston position indicating means comprise at least a mobile part received within said housing, said mobile part being movable with respect to said housing from a first position, in which said mobile part is not perceivable by the user, to a second position, in which said mobile part is perceivable by the user, said mobile part being caused to move from its first position to its second position under the effect of said biasing means expanding during the injection phase.
- said housing being opaque and comprising at least one window allowing a user to see the interior of said housing there through, said mobile part is prevented from facing said window when said mobile part is in its first position, and said mobile part is allowed to face said window when said mobile part is in its second position.
- the housing is made of a material, for example plastic, not allowing the user to see the interior of the housing through said material.
- the window may define an open hole, free of material or alternatively it may define a hole closed with a transparent material, as long as a user can see the interior of the housing through said window.
- the window defines for example a hole closed by a transparent material, like a transparent film for instance, then the user is informed that the injection is completed when the mobile part comes in regard to said window, said mobile part therefore becoming perceivable to the user, ie the user can see the mobile part.
- the sensitive indicator in this case is a visual indicator.
- said window defines an open hole free of any material and at least a portion of said mobile part is designed for protruding to the exterior of the housing through said hole, when said mobile part is in its second position.
- said portion comprises an outer radial projection of said mobile part. In such a case, the user is allowed to feel the outer radial projection on the hand with which he handles the device.
- the user grasps the device by taking in one hand the housing of the device : when the outer radial projection is allowed to protrude to the exterior of the housing through the window, the user feels the outer radial projection on his hand.
- the device further comprises travel means for moving distally said mobile part from its first position to its second position.
- This travel means may be formed by part of the biasing means.
- said travel means comprising at least a piston rod coupled to said biasing means, said piston rod being intended to push said piston distally under the action of said biasing means
- the device further comprises coupling means designed for attaching said mobile part to said piston rod, at least at some time after the injection has begun and until the end of injection.
- Said coupling means may comprise at least a flexible tongue provided on said mobile part and at least a recess provided on an outer wall of said piston rod, said flexible tongue being caused to engage said recess at some time during the injection under the action of said biasing means, thereby coupling said mobile part to said piston rod.
- Figure 1 is a schematic longitudinal cross section view of an embodiment of the device of the invention, before use;
- Figure 2 is a schematic longitudinal cross section view of the device of figure 1 once the needle has been inserted in the injection site and at the beginning of the injection phase,
- Figure 3 is a schematic longitudinal cross section view of the device of Figure 1 during the injection phase, before the end of the injection;
- Figure 4 is a schematic longitudinal cross section view of the device of figure 1 at the end of injection.
- Figure 1 shows a longitudinal cross section of an embodiment of the device for automatic injection according to the present invention, as provided to the user before use, and which is referred to as device 1 in the following description.
- the device 1 comprises a container 2 having a proximal open-end 3, a substantially closed distal end 4 bearing a needle 5; the container 2 carries a product 6 to be injected at an injection site 7. At its proximal end 3, the container 2 is provided with an outer flange 2a.
- a piston 8 is provided in the container 2 and is movable with respect to said container 2.
- the device 1 comprises also a piston rod 9 intended to be coupled to the piston 8 and to push it distally during the injection.
- the piston rod 9 in the example shown, comprises a hollow cylinder 10 closed at its distal end by a transversal wall 11 intended to come in contact with and push the piston 8 during the injection phase, as will appear below.
- the piston rod 9 is provided in the proximal region of its outer wall with a recess 12. The proximal end of the piston rod 9 is open and a helical spring 13 is received within the hollow cylinder 10.
- the device 1 further comprises a housing 14 : the housing 14 has the global shape of a tube open at both ends.
- the housing 14 receives the container 2 and the piston rod 9.
- the container 2 is fixed with respect to the housing 14 during the injection phase.
- the container 2 may be fixed to the housing 14 during the injection phase by any coupling or fixation means such as clips, cooperating parts engaged with each other : such coupling and/or fixation means are described in WO2007/132353 and will not be repeated herein.
- the housing 14 comprises in its proximal region an inner cylinder
- the housing 14 is made of an opaque material, for example plastic, not allowing the user to see the interior of the housing 14.
- the housing 14 nevertheless comprises in the middle region of its outer wall a window 17 through which the user may see a part of the interior of the housing 14.
- the window 17 defines an open hole free of any material.
- the window may define a hole closed with a transparent material so that the user may see through said window into the housing 14;
- the device 1 of figures 1-4 further comprises a push button 18 for activating the injection.
- the push button 18 is located within the proximal region of the housing 14 and is capable of being moved slightly in the distal direction under pressure exerted by the user on a proximal transversal wall 18a of said push button 18.
- the push button 18 is provided on the inner face of its proximal transversal wall 18a with a tooth 19 extending in the distal direction, the function of which will be explained later.
- the device 1 further comprises a mobile part 20 located between the piston rod 9 and the outer wall of the housing 14.
- the mobile part 20 comprises a longitudinal wall 21 : this longitudinal wall 21 is provided on its outer face, facing the outer wall of the housing 14, with an outer radial projection 22, and on its inner face, facing the outer wall of the piston rod 9, with a flexible tongue 23, extending inwardly radially and proximally.
- the proximal end of the helical spring 13 is attached to the transversal wall 18a of the push button 18, and the distal end of the said helical spring 13 bears on the proximal face of the flange 11 of the proximal end of the piston rod 9.
- the proximal end of the helical spring 13 could be attached to a proximal point of fixation on the housing 14. In this position, the helical spring 13 is in a compressed position. In this position also, the flexible tooth 16 of the inner cylinder 15 of the housing 14 is engaged in the recess 12 of the outer wall of the piston rod 9.
- the mobile part 20 is in a first position where it is maintained fixed with respect to the housing 14 and to the piston rod 9, for example by friction forces exerted on one hand by its outer radial projection 22 coming in abutment against the inner face of the outer wall of the housing 14, and on the other hand by its flexible tongue 23 coming in abutment against the outer wall of the piston rod 9.
- the mobile part 20 is therefore prevented to face the window 17 of the housing 14; in this first position of said mobile part 20, because of the opaque nature of the housing 14, the user cannot see the mobile part 20 : the mobile part 20 is therefore not perceivable by the user when it is in its first position.
- the piston rod 9 comes in contact with the piston 8 and couples with the container 2, thereby causing the limited distal movement of the container 2 and insertion of the needle 5 in the injection site 7 (as shown on figure 2) : such an insertion step is described for example in WO2007/132353.
- the container 2 is then stopped from further moving distally, by means of its outer flange 2a coming in abutment, via an intermediate spring 30, against a needle shield 40 received in the distal region of the housing 14 and coupled to said housing 14 via classic means, for example described in WO2007/132353.
- the distal end of the needle shield 40 is in abutment on the injection site 7.
- the further distal movement of the piston rod 9 causes the piston 8 to move distally : the injection steps begins.
- the piston 8 is therefore coupled to the biasing means, ie the helical spring 13, via the piston rod 9 during the injection phase.
- the device 1 does not comprise any piston rod and the piston 8 is directly coupled to the biasing means, for example a helical spring, during the injection phase.
- the biasing means may be coupled to the piston directly or indirectly (via a piston rod for example).
- the flexible tongue 23 is at that moment caused to come back to its natural non deflected position and engages the recess 12 : the consequence is that the engagement force of the flexible tongue 23 into the recess 12 becomes greater than the friction force exerted by the radial projection 22 of the mobile part 20 on the inner face of the outer wall of the housing 14.
- the recess 12 and the flexible tongue 23 act then as coupling means for attaching the mobile part 20 to the piston rod 9 at that time of the injection phase.
- the travel means may be formed by a part of the helical spring becoming coupled to the mobile part 20 at a certain time during the injection, said part of the helical spring then drawing the mobile part distally as the helical spring expands distally.
- the mobile part 20 has reached its second position : in this second position of the mobile part 20, the outer radial projection 22 becomes visible and even sensible, ie touchable, by the user, who holds the housing 14 of the device 1 in his hand, the skin of his hand being in contact with said window 17. The user is then able to perceive the mobile part 20, either by seeing it or by feeling it on its hand.
- the mobile part 20 acts as piston position indicating means for producing a sensitive indicator, which is both a visual and tactile indicator in the example shown, when the piston 8 is near the distal end of the container 2 and the product 6 is substantially completely expelled from the container 2, thereby informing the user that injection of the product is completed.
- the device of the invention allows the user to be clearly informed that the injection is completed. This is particularly important in self-injection devices where the injection is realized via automatic means such as biasing means, on which the user has no influence.
- the user being a patient, not used to injection devices in general, it is important that he be informed of the end of injection and of the time when the product is substantially completely expelled, so that he can safely withdraw the injection device from the injection site.
