Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for framing images.
- the conventional manner of displaying a photographic image is to print the image onto paper, for example using an ink jet or dye sublimation printer, and then to mount the photograph in a picture frame.
- the picture frame may have a glass pane behind which the photograph is placed and a separate decorative frame surrounding the window.
- a rear cover is secured to the frame to retain both the glass pane and the photograph in position .
- the invention seeks to provide an alternative method of mounting and framing images which is cost effective, is capable of producing aesthetically pleasing results and is robust and long lasting.
- a method of producing a framed image for display which comprises providing a plastics mount having a transparent window injection moulded integrally with a decorative surrounding frame, the decoration of the frame being applied during the moulding of the mount, and printing the image directly onto the rear surface of the transparent window of the mount .
- the rear surface of the window refers herein to the side lying within the frame, the front surface being the side from which the image is normally viewed.
- the decorative frame and the protective window for the image are preformed as a moulded one-piece mount. Aside from reducing the assembly costs, such a one piece mount can benefit from the cost advantages offered by the use of plastics moulding techniques and the aesthetic possibilities offered by in-mould decoration.
- In-mould decoration is itself already known and used for example in producing the front faces fitted to mobile telephones.
- a carrier foil is placed inside the opened mould which carries dried paint layers which are to be transferred to the plastic part.
- the paint lies on the side of the foil facing the injection gate. After filling of the mould, the paint adheres to the plastics and is removed from the carrier when opening the mould.
- the carrier foil is advanced, positioning the next area to be transferred.
- a particularly desirable visual effect can be achieved when using in-mould decoration in that the transparent window can be flush with the front face of the surrounding frame.
- the glass has of necessity to be recessed into the frame.
- the invention does not simply reduce assembly costs but also allows improved positioning of the image within the frame.
- a border can be applied to it during the image processing or a montage can be created of several images.
- the image As the image is to be viewed from the opposite of the window from that to which it is applied, it needs to be printed as a mirror image and that too is readily achieved during the image processing.
- the transparent window may be made of a plastics material opaque to ultraviolet (UV) light or a UV coating may be applied to one of its surfaces.
- UV ultraviolet
- the inks or dyes in the image can be protected against the fading and discolouration that is caused by prolonged exposure to sun light.
- the front surface of the mount can also be made more scratch resistant either by incorporating a suitable coating as part of the in-mould decoration or by application of a suitable film, such as by spraying, as a secondary process.
- the mount is preferably provided with a rear cover to protect the image after it has been printed.
- a rear cover may conveniently incorporate different means for standing, suspending or attaching the mount. Thus it may have a fold out portion to enable the mount to stand on a horizontal surface in both portrait and landscape orientation.
- the rear cover preferably also comprises holes by means of which it can be wall mounted and magnets to allow the mount to adhere to a metal surface, such as the door of a refrigerator.
- the mount or the frame may additionally include means for enabling the image to be illuminated from the rear.
- Such means may include a light source and an optical system for evenly illuminating the image from the rear .
- the optical system may simply comprise a diffusing reflector mounted on an incline within the mount or it may comprise an edge-lit light guide having a roughened surface from which light is emitted towards the rear surface of the image.
- a mount have a transparent window formed integrally with a surrounding frame, wherein the mount is formed by injection moulding and the frame is formed by applying a decoration during the injection moulding process.
- the front face of the transparent window is advantageously flush and continuous with the front face of the surrounding frame.
- the invention further provides a mount as set out above wherein an image is printed on the rear surface of the transparent window.
- a rear cover is fitted to the mount having features to enable the mount to be stood on a horizontal surface, suspended on a wall and/or magnetically attached to a metal surface.
- proprietary images can be embedded into the mount as part of the in-mould decoration and/or into the rear cover fitted to the mount.
- text messages such as greetings may be incorporated into the frame and/or the rear cover. The facility to print such images and messages allows the mount to be used in advertising or in place of a greetings card.
- the rear covers may furthermore be interchangeable so that the user may select a backlight option or different colours or graphic design.
- Figure 1 is a front view of a mount of the invention framing a photograph of an infant
- Figure 2 is a section through the mount of Figure 1.
- the mount in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a transparent window 10 surrounded by a decorative frame 12.
- the window 10 and the frame 12 are formed integrally by injection moulded, the frame being formed by placing a decorative layer within the mould during the moulding process.
- a rear cover 18 carrying a magnet 20 is used to close the rear of the mount and thereby protect the printed image.
- the rear cover 18 has features such as a fold out flap and holes (not seen in the drawings) to enable the mount to the hung on a wall or stood on a horizontal surface in both a portrait (longer axis vertical) and a landscape orientation.
- Interchangeable rear covers may be provided so that the user may choose between a backlight option, or rear covers of different colour and graphic design.
- a reflector 22 may be placed within the mount to provide back illumination of the displayed image.
- the illustrated reflector is a card having a reflective coating, such as the coating used in reflective number plates.
- the reflector may be an edge lit light guide with etched surfaces from which light is scattered.
- the light may be placed within the mount, or it may be mounted outside the mount to shine through an edge region of the mount which is left transparent by omission of any in- mould decoration. In the latter case, the light may be part of an attachment secured to an edge of the mount or it may be built into a dedicated stand on which the mount can be placed.
- a particular advantage of the invention is that it permits the frame surrounding the displayed image to have any desired shape and it is not restricted to a square or a rectangle.
- the mount can be circular, elliptical or heart shaped without adding to the complexity of its manufacture nor detracting from its sturdiness.
- the invention offers protection to the image in that the inks or dyes do not lie on the exposed side of the transparent window.
- the plastics material can be rendered scratch resistant by incorporating a suitable coating as part of the in-mould decoration or by application of a protective film after moulding.
- the plastics material of the mount also protects the image from vapour or smoke in the air.
- the image can have applied to it a protective coating after it has been printed onto the rear of the transparent window to improve its longevity.
