Definitions
- the present invention relates to an animal tagging device particularly for applying ear tags to domestic livestock as well as a method for applying an ear tag to an animal's ear using the device and furthermore to a tag which may be used with the device in carrying out the method.
- ear tags are mounted in a magazine that rotates, such that it is possible to rotate the ear tag into a position where an actuating member forces the ear tag through the ear of the animal.
- the actuating member is connected to a relatively bulky automatic device such that the manual effort required to apply the ear tags is relatively little apart from having to carry the relatively bulky and heavy device.
- EP 0138570 wherein a device substantially similar to the device described above with reference to DE 10001176 is disclosed.
- This device differs in the way that the tag is fastened to the animal's ear in that the actuating member comprises a gripping member which gripping member penetrates the ear of the animal and on the backside of the ear grabs a tag to be placed on the animal, pulls the tag through the aperture created by the piercing action of the actuating mem- ber and in this manner makes it possible to fold a tag around the ear through the piercing.
- the device is furthermore described as being manually operated such that a relatively large force is needed in order to squeeze the piercing member attached to the actuating member through the ear of the animal, and at the same time in order to avoid distribution of bacteria, disease and the like it will be necessary to clean the piercing member each time it has been in contact with an animal.
- ear tag is provided with a protrusion which protrusion fits snugly into an actuating and piercing member such that by placing the ear tag onto the piercing member and actuating the device the piercing member will penetrate the ear of the animal thereby pulling the ear tag with it and in this manner fastening the ear tag in an animal's ear.
- the piercing member will be in contact with the animal as such and thereby as is already mentioned above constitute a health risk in that the piercing member may be polluted by bacteria, disease or the like which in this manner may spread from animal to animal.
- US 6053926 is known a device with an actuating member which forces a part of an ear tag through the ear of an animal where the ear tag part has a spike which engages the oppositely positioned part of the ear tag and engages this in a manner such that the ear tag becomes fastened to the animal's ear.
- the tags are arranged on a sliding system such that the device must be held in a determined position in order for gravity to propel the tags into the proper position for being fastened to the ear of an animal. Due to the environment in an animal stable the device may be very unreliable in that dirt, dust and the like will become stuck in the sliding mechanism such that proper op- eration of the device may be hampered due to air pollution, dust and the like.
- the apparatus is foreseen as being manually operated such that the operator may tire relatively quickly due to the force needed in order to make the ear tag parts penetrate the animal's ear and engage the oppositely positioned ear tag part.
- a device which may be operated by electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic means, where the tags are two part tags which are pushed through guide means towards a position where actuating means forces a spike member through an aperture in a female tag member.
- the activation of the actuating member will cause the spike to penetrate through the animal's ear and be inserted in the aperture in the female tag member whereby the tag is fastened to the animal's ear.
- the tags are loaded into a storage unit and are biased towards the actuating member by means of a spring in a guide member.
- the biasing means may force the array of tags laterally against the sides of the tag guiding means such that the agglomerated resistance created by the array of tags in the guide means create such a resistive force that it becomes very difficult to force the tags along the guiding means towards the actuating member.
- the invention provides an animal tagging device, particularly for applying ear tags to domestic livestock, where the device comprises:
- a trigger mechanism - ear tag guiding means, having inlet and outlet ends; a tagging station adjacent the outlet end of the guiding means; reciprocating ear tag moving means comprising at least one engagement member for engaging ear tags in the guiding means and placing the tags in the tagging station; actuating means superposed the tagging station;
- the pushing action of the engagement means only pushes the foremost tag in the array of tags into the tagging station and in embodiments where the array of tags is interconnected, i.e. injection moulded as an array of tags, the pushing action on the foremost tag will drag the following tag into a position where the engagement member on the following tagging cycle will push this tag into the tagging station.
- each guiding means are provided with a tagging station adjacent the outlet end and where upper and lower engagement members connected to the reciprocating means will propel a two part tag into the tagging station.
- tags i.e. tags where the two parts of the tags are suitable to be mutually engaged, for example tags as suggested in US 6053926 mentioned above.
- the engagement members are provided for each guiding means such that the engagement members for both the upper and lower guiding means will force the two tag parts into superposed tagging stations before the actuating member is activated thereby fastening the tag to the animal's ear.
- upper and lower guiding means define respective paths for the tags towards the tagging station, and where the paths are provided with lateral indentations adjacent the outlet end for slightly narrow- ing the paths.
- the tags are for example injection moulded in an array and interconnected at points common to two neighbouring tags the indentations arranged in the guiding means will create enough resistance to the second tag from the front relative to the first tag such that the connection between the two tags will be bro- ken when the engagement members force the foremost tag into the tagging station. In this manner the tags are separated prior to being fastened to the animal's ear.
- the reciprocating means and the actuating means are powered by an electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic source of power.
- the reciprocating means comprises a housing in which housing at least one cylinder and piston is provided where the piston is connected to the engagement member, such that the piston is moveable in the cylinder in a reciprocating manner.
- the engagement member comprises two engagement sections wherein the guiding means has a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the means, corresponding at least partly to the cross section of the tags to be applied.
- the engagement section will engage protrusions provided on the tag member and force the tag member forwards.
- the engagement means will due to the resilient construction of the engagement members slide over the protrusions on the next tag and in this manner be able to pass the tags in the backward direction while forcing them forward in the opposite direction due to the resilient construction of the engagement sections.
- backwards is the direction where no tag is pushed forward into the tag- ging station such that the backward direction is towards the inlet of the guiding means.
- the guiding means has a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the means, corresponding at least partly to the cross section of the tags to be applied.
- the guiding means may be designed specifically to one particular type of tags such that by further shaping the guide means according to the cross section of these tags, a much more stable and precise guiding may be achieved in the guiding means as the tags advance towards the tagging station.
- the invention is also directed at a method for applying an ear tag to an animal's ear using a device as described above wherein an array of tags are arranged in the guiding means of the device, where the tag adjacent the outlet end of the guiding means is brought into contact with the engagement member, such that as the device is made ready, the foremost tag is introduced into the tagging station, and the animal's ear is placed under the tagging station, where actuation of the actuating means by the trigger mechanism will cause the actuating means to push at least a part of the ear tag through the animals ear, and as the actuating means is retracted, the next tag from the array is introduced into the tagging station.
- the invention is also directed at a tag for use in a device according to any of the embodiments described above and the method as mentioned, where the tag on one outer surface comprises protrusions, which protrusions are engaged by the engagement member when the tag is mounted in the device, which pushes the tags towards the tag- ging section.
- the protrusions being shaped in this particular manner provides the unique feature of making it possible to push on the foremost tag in an array of tags, and when the engagement section moves backwards, it slides over the next tag without moving said tag such that as the engagement member reciprocates and thereafter moves forward, the engagement member will engage the substantially perpendicular first phase of the protrusion thereby pushing the tags further.

- Figure 4 illustrates a further figure detailing the interaction of tags and tagging station in the inventive device
- Figure 5 illustrates a view of the device from below Figure 6a, 6b and 7 illustrate a second embodiment.
- FIG 1 is illustrated a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention.
- the device 1 comprises a base frame 2 on which base frame the various parts of the device are mounted.
- a switch 3 is provided projecting into an aperture 4 of the base frame 2.
- the aperture 4 will include a trigger activating the movable switch member 5 such that it is clear to a user that the aperture 4 is part of a handle where the fingers of a hand may be inserted in order to operate the movable trigger mechanism 5.
- an actuating member 6 When activating the trigger mechanism an actuating member 6 is activated whereby a piston 7 projects downwards and engages a tag member 8 forcing the tag member 8 downwards into a female part 9 of the tag.
- an animal's ear will have been placed between the upper part of the tag member 8 and the female tag member 9 such that as the piston 7 is moved downwards the projecting part of the upper tag member 8 will penetrate the animal's ear and the aperture provided centrally in the lower tag member part 9 thereby locking the two tag members together around the animal's ear.
- the device 1 is provided with upper and lower guide means 10, 11 such that an array of tags 8, 9 may be placed in the guide means 10, 11 and due to the reciprocating motion of the ear tag moving means be forwarded to the tagging stations 12, 13.
- guide means lids 14, 15 which lids 14, 15 serve to maintain the tags inside the guide means 10, 11 and at the same time pro- tect the guide means for the influence of foreign matters.
- reciprocating means which in this embodiment is in the shape of a cylinder construction 16 from which two piston rods 17, 18 extend, where the piston rods are connected to engagement means 19.
- the engagement means will be further described with reference to figure 3.
- the cylinder construction 16 comprises two cylinders, one for driving each piston rod 17, 18 such that an even and safe transferral of the biasing force by the engagement means 19 to the tags 8, 9 is ensured.
- FIG 2 which is substantially similar to figure 1 the guide means lids 14, 15 have been removed in order to expose the array of tags 20, 21 placed in the guide means 10, 11.
- the tags are typically injection moulded and are connected where the peripheries of two adjacent tags touch in which manner a very simple, cheap and reliable construction of the array of tags 20, 21 is provided.
- the guide means 10, 11 accommodates the tags such that they may only move in the longitudinal direction of the guide means whereas sideways limitations are provided.
- All the tags in the arrays 20, 21 are substantially identical and comprises a top surface 22 on which surface is provided two wedge-shaped protrusions 23 where the protrusions as will be explained with reference to figure 3 comprises an oblique second face and a first face substantially perpendicular to the top surface 22 of the tags.
- the engagement member 19 comprises two engagement sections 24, 25 which are designed to engage the protrusions 23 provided on the top surface 22 of the tags.
- the tag 8 moves downwards whereby the connection 27 between two adjacent tags, namely the foremost tag placed in the tagging station 12 and the second tag immediately adjacent the tagging station 12 will be severed due to shear forces generated by the actuating cylinder 7.
- the cylinder construction 16 reciprocates whereby the piston rods 17, 18 retracts such that the engagement section 24, 25 slides over the oblique face 30 of the protrusion 23 whereby the engagement sec- tions 24, 25 when the piston rods 17, 18 again move forward towards the tagging station, pushes on the perpendicular side face 31 of the protrusion 23 thereby biasing the following tag 8 into the tagging station 12.
- progressive tags 8 will due to the engagement sections 24, 25 engage with the surfaces 31 of the protrusions 23 continuously push new tags into the tagging station making the device instantly ready for tagging the next animal.
- indentations 30, 31 are provided inside the guide means 10 relative to the position of number two tag in the array of tags or in other words the indentations 30, 31 are provided at a position where the tag which is next to be placed in the tagging station 12 is arranged prior to advancement into the tagging station 12.
- the indentations 30, 31 serve to break the advancement of the array of tags 20 such that sharing of the connection 27 between two adjacent tags, namely the foremost tag placed in the tagging station 12 and the second tag held between the indentations 30, 31, becomes easier.
- the principle of advancing the foremost tag at any one time provides a pulling action for adjacent tags in the array of tags 20 stored in the tag guiding means 10 such that the tags following the foremost tag will never be exposed to anything but pulling forces pulling them along the guide means. In this manner it is avoided that deformation of the tags, debris, dust and the like may hamper the propulsion of the tags through the guide means 10.
- FIG 5 a view of the device 1 from below is illustrated where the lower guiding means 11 are only indicated as transparent lines whereby it becomes possible to view the female part of the tags 9.
- the bottom surface 32 of the female tags 9 are provided with protrusions 23 exactly identical to the protrusions 23 provided on the upper tags 8 and the interplay between the engagement member 19, the engagement sections 24, 25 are completely analogue to what is described above with reference to the upper tag in the upper guiding member 10.
- a pneumatic quick-lock connection 35 is illustrated, but as already explained above, any type of power source may be utilized in connection with the inventive device.
- fig. 6 and 7 is illustrated a second embodiment of the invention. All reference numbers correspond to the same features throughout the application. The second embodiment differs from the embodiment disclosed above in that the guide means are config- ured differently.
- the guide means 10', 11' are configured in the inlet end to accommodate the tags in a position where the tags are turned 90° relative to the position in the tagging station 12,13. This feature makes it possible to utilise tags as illustrated in fig. 6a and 6b.
- the individual tags 8, 9 are injection moulded, to a carrier strip 36.
- the carrier strip 36 is provided with protrusions 23 as discussed above with reference to fig. 2 and 3.
- the tags 8, 9 are inserted in the guide means 10', 11' in a flat configuration, as illustrated in the right hand side of fig. 6a, and left hand side of fig. 6b.
- the guide means 10', 11 ' near the tagging stations 12, 13, is provided with turning members 37, 38.
- the turning members 37, 38 forces the tags to rotate relative to the carrier strip 36, such that as the tags enter the tagging station 12, 13, the tags will have the same orientation as mentioned above with reference to fig. 1-3.
- the lower turning member 38 is provided with a slit 40, such that the receiving stud 41 is accommodated in the turning member 38, during the turning operation.
- the tags 8, 9 will therefore, as they progress towards the tagging station 12,13, be turned by the guide means 10', 11 ' as illustrated in fig 6b.
- tags may be injection moulded as one collective unit, introduced and advanced through the device as one unit, and only separated during the actual tagging action of the device, which will lock the male tag 8 to the female tag 9, through the animal's ear. In this manner it is easier to advance the two tag parts evenly and at the exact same rate through the device, which again eases the tagging action. It is easier to handle the tags as they are attached to the carrier strip 36.
