Abstract

 本発明の外部変調器の制御装置は、光源からの出射光を入力信号に基づいて変調する外部変調器の制御装置であって、所定の周波数を有する低周波信号を生成し、出力する低周波信号生成手段と;前記入力信号である第1の変調信号と前記低周波信号とを重畳させて第2の変調信号とし、この第2の変調信号を前記外部変調器に印加する信号重畳手段と;前記外部変調器の光出力から前記低周波信号成分を検出し、この検出した低周波信号の位相と前記低周波信号生成手段から出力される低周波信号の位相とを比較し、その位相差に応じた信号を出力する低周波信号検出手段と;前記低周波信号検出手段の出力信号に基づいて、前記外部変調器の動作点ドリフトを補償するように制御する動作点制御手段と;前記外部変調器の光出力の平均値を検出する光パワーレベル検出手段と;前記光パワーレベル検出手段の検出出力に基づいてゲインが設定されるように構成され、前記低周波信号検出手段の出力を増幅し、前記動作点制御手段に出力する可変利得増幅手段と;を有し、前記可変利得増幅手段のゲインは、前記外部変調器の出力側から前記動作点制御手段を介して前記外部変調器に至るループにおける閉ループゲインが一定になるように設定される。
