Abstract

 VAモードの液晶表示装置であって、一対の垂直配向膜32a、32bの液晶層側の表面のそれぞれに形成された光重合物から構成される一対の配向維持層34a、34bと、対向電極にのみ設けられた十字形状の開口部22aを有する。液晶層に所定の電圧を印加したとき、4つの液晶ドメインが形成され、各液晶ドメインのディレクタの方位は互いに異なり、且つ、一対の偏光板の偏光軸に対して略45度をなす。液晶層に電圧を印加していないとき、4つの液晶ドメインのそれぞれに対応する領域の液晶分子は、配向維持層34a、34bによってプレチルト方位が規定されている。
