Abstract

 斜め方向の広範囲な視角から画像表示装置の表示が見えないように遮光することができるディスプレイと、これに用いられる視野角制御素子とを提供する。視野角制御用液晶パネル(2)は、狭視野角状態の場合に、所定の波長域の光が極角φH以上で入射した際に、液晶セル(21)が位相差を与えることにより、この光が偏光板(22)を透過しないよう遮蔽する。視野角制御用液晶パネル(3)は、狭視野角状態の場合に、偏光板(22)を透過した光のうち極角φL以上で入射した光に対して液晶セル(31)が位相差を与え、この光が偏光板(32)を透過しないよう遮蔽する。これにより、全体として極角φL以上の光が遮蔽され、広範囲な狭視野角状態が実現される。
