Description
本形態では、透過型の液晶表示装置を用いた例について述べるが、これ以外にも、自発光素子のプラズマディスプレイやEL(electroluminescence)ディスプレイなどを用いることができる。また、本発明は、カラー表示、白黒表示のいずれにも適用可能である。
(1)遮光領域24が二色性色素のゲスト−ホスト型液晶により形成されており、かつ、映像表示装置13として偏光板を必要とする素子例えば液晶素子などを用いる場合
(2)遮光領域24が二色性色素のゲスト−ホスト型液晶により形成されており、かつ、映像表示装置13として偏光板を必要としない自発光素子例えばEL素子などを用いる場合
(3)遮光領域24が高分子分散型液晶により形成されており、かつ、映像表示装置13として偏光板を必要とする素子例えば液晶素子などを用いる場合
(4)遮光領域24が高分子分散型液晶により形成されており、かつ、映像表示装置13として偏光板を必要としない自発光素子例えばEL素子などを用いる場合
を挙げることができる。
次に、図4および図5を参照しながら、本形態の映像表示装置の表示原理について説明する。なお、本形態では、遮光領域24を高分子分散型液晶にて形成した場合について説明する。

Claims (12)
- 光源と観察者との間に置かれて、映像表示装置を広視野角モードと狭視野角モードとに切り替える視野角制御素子において、
一つの画素に対向して、
柱状透光性樹脂層からなり、ある透過度T1を有する第1領域と、
液晶層からなり、ある透過度T2と、T1およびT2より小さいある透過度T3とに切り替えることができる第2領域とを備えたことを特徴とする視野角制御素子。 - 前記液晶層を駆動するための透明電極として、パターニングされていない面一電極が用いられていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- T1とT2とが互いに等しいことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 上記第2領域は、液晶層の吸収により透過度T3を示すことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 上記第2領域が、二色性色素を含有したゲスト−ホスト型液晶であることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 上記第2領域は、液晶層の散乱により透過度T3を示すことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 上記第2領域が、高分子分散型液晶であることを特徴とする請求項6に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 複数個のそれぞれが視野角を決定し、複数個の第1領域の、1つの画素あたりの総面積が輝度を決定するように、一つの画素に対向する部位に上記第1領域が複数個存在することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 上記第1領域がストライプ状であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 水平ラインと平行な方向に上記第1領域と第2領域とが並んでいることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 水平ラインと平行な方向および水平ラインと垂直な平行な方向に上記第1領域と第2領域とが並んでいることを特徴とする請求項10に記載の視野角制御素子。
- 広視野角モードと狭視野角モードとを有する映像表示装置において、
上記請求項1ないし11のいずれかに記載の視野角制御素子により広視野角モードと狭視野角モードとを切り替えられることを特徴とする映像表示装置。
