Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a new floating head mechanism to allow the self adjustment of a cutting head and associated rollers related to a ground surface on a hand mower.
  • prior art devices have been provided which are connected to the cutting head via a chain or other flexible linkage system.
  • This chain allows the head to move relative to the body and surface upon which it is acting.
  • the head can move freely up to and including the fullest extension of the chain.
  • This connection means has a significant disadvantage however, as the head can move in an uncontrolled manner, particularly during sudden or unexpected movements of the head, body or changes in the ground surface.
  • An alternative means of linking the cutting head to the main body of the grass treatment device is the provision of a four bar linkage system, connecting the cutting head of the device to the main body.
  • This four bar linkage system allows the cutting head to move in a single plane relative to the main body and as this is a less flexible fixation method, the cutting head feels and acts in a predictable and reproducible fashion unlike a cutting head connected using a flexible member such as a chain. Disadvantages exist however with this prior art coupling method as limitations of movement in this single plane makes it difficult sometimes to prevent the scalping of uneven surfaces with such a device.
  • the scalping of grass surfaces is a significant problem as the damaging of a grass surface can render it entirely unsuitable for its use as a playing surface.

  • said at least one gimbal is configured to allow movement of said head relative to said device and is configured so as to prevent the movement of an outer portion of said head directly anterior to a central portion of said at least one gimbal.

  • the device comprises at least one gimbal mechanism configured to move in an axis substantially perpendicular to that of the shared longitudinal axis of the first and second rollers.

  • the grass treatment device comprises a first gimbal capable of movement in an axis substantially parallel to that of the longitudinal axis shared by said first and said second roller and two gimbals formed on opposing sides of -A- said head and capable of movement in an axis substantially perpendicular to that of said first and said second rollers.

  • this floating head 100 configured to allow a grass treatment tool 102 and its associated rollers 101 to move relative to a grass treatment device which it is operatively connected to and powered by.
  • this floating head 100 comprises a first and second roller 101 and a grass treatment tool 102 positioned between these first and second rollers.
  • the first and second rollers are configured to contact a grass surface and to convey the grass treatment tool across this grass surface when the grass treatment device moves.
  • the grass treatment tool is shown in a front on orientation and therefore only the first roller and grass treatment tool are shown.
  • the front roller 101 is a substantially cylindrical body which extends from a first to a second side of the grass treatment device. This front roller 101 and rear roller are free to move about there central longitudinal axis so allowing movement of the tool across the grass surface which is being treated.
  • the inventors have provided a mechanism to allow the floating head to move relative to the grass treatment device to which it is connected.
  • connection mechanism 103 located centrally over the floating head member. Connected on either side of this mechanism 103 is a first and second chassis member 104 and 105, which are themselves connected to the floating head 100.
  • the floating head adjustment mechanism 102 comprises a gimbal which is connected to the floating head 100 via two connecting members which are substantially rigid and evenly sized.
  • the floating head gimbal mechanism 102 comprises means to allow the gimbal mechanism to move in both a leftwards and rightwards direction over a fixed arc.
  • this adjustment means is provided by a series of nylon wheels positioned inside of said gimbal mechanism 102 and which allow the outer covering of the gimbal mechanism 102 to move so allowing movement of the gimbal mechanism 102 at any of a range of positions from the far left extreme to a far right extreme. These ranges being defined by the position at which the outer most wheel comes into contact with the side wall of the gimbal mechanism 102 and therefore prevents the gimbal mechanism from moving in this direction.
  • a arc chamber has been formed in which the wheels may move. By providing an arced chamber this allows the floating head 100 to move along a similarly angled arc.
  • the adjustment mechanism comprises a number of wheels contained within an arced chamber formed into the gimbal mechanism 102, this allows the floating head 100 to adjust itself to the local conditions upon which the floating head finds itself.
  • the relative degree of offset of the gimbal mechanism 102 relative to the chassis is therefore determined by a slope of the surface upon which the floating head is positioned.
  • FIG. 2 there is shown a further aspect of the floating head mechanism provided by the inventors in the current application.
  • a second 202 and third floating (not shown) head gimbal mechanism on the first and second sides of the floating head.
  • These second 202 and third floating head gimbal mechanisms operate in an identical manner to that of the first previously described gimbal mechanism 102.
  • the floating head 100 is capable of movement both in an arc in a first axis so as to conform to the orientation of a surface and also in a second substantially perpendicular axis again so as to conform as closely as possible to the surface which the floating head is encountering.
  • the floating head 100 is shown in a backwards position and with reference to figure 6 the floating head is shown in a substantially forward position. Again these forward and backwards positions are defined by the arc chamber formed into the first and second gimbal mechanisms formed onto alternate sides of the floating head in accordance with this first specific embodiment of the present invention.
  • Each of these adjustment mechanisms comprises a number of rollers operably positioned on a track.
  • the rollers in the central floating head gimbal mechanism are able to move 5 degrees laterally each way making a total adjustment of 10 degrees in total.
  • the side gimbals are each capable of moving 2.5 degrees fore and aft, again making the total adjustment of 5 degrees in total.
  • the present floating head mechanism maintains the a portion of the grass treatment tool 102 immediately anterior or underneath the front gimbal 103 in a constant position with respect to this gimbal 103.
  • This is unlike previous floating head mechanisms in that such other mechanisms allow the entirety of the treatment tool and its lower edge to move and increasing the chances this edge damaging a surface as in such an instance the edge of the treatment tool may bare no relation to the disposition of the main body of the grass treatment device and so a use may inadvertently use the device in such a way as to cause damage to the surface.
