- Torque limiters intended to be interposed between a driving shaft and a driven shaft, are known from the prior art: such limiters are used in particular in the automotive field, and make it possible, for example, to limit the torque transmitted by an internal combustion engine to a non-disengageable transmission such as an automatic transmission or a continuously variable transmission (frequently referred to as "CVT").

- these torque limiters comprise a friction pinch between two support plates under the effect of elastic means, this pinch being calibrated so that when the torque exerted by the driving shaft exceeds a predetermined threshold, friction can slip between the two support plates and thus dissipate by friction the excess torque exerted by the driving shaft, thus avoiding the ruin of the bodies located downstream of the driven shaft.
- the torque limiter acts as a fuse between the driving and driven shafts.
- a particular type of torque limiter is the flexible flywheel torque limiter: the presence of a flexible flywheel makes it possible to absorb the jerks in axial translation and in nutation transmitted by the driving shaft, in particular when this shaft is driven by an internal combustion engine.
