Definitions

  • the present invention concerns jewelry articles with mounted additions.
  • the gem is traditionally mounted by initially making an opening, for example generally using a burin to provide a new space for the gem. Then, prick punches are fastened, which function as fetching plugs for the gem.
  • the jeweler does not normally carry out this work himself, but places the job with a specialist in this field - a gem mounter ("fatter").
  • Rubbing is required for each mounting, which also leads to thinner material, and which again makes it more difficult to mount additional gems at a later stage.
  • EP-Al 671135 describes a jewelry article (illustrated by, but not limited to, a ring), with a main body that has a number of mounting spaces for gems, and where there are attachment devices for the gems.
  • the invention comprises the preparation of standardized jewelry articles with prefabricated mounting spaces for additions, the mounting of additions of the right size in some of the spaces, and putting a cover on the spaces that are not in use.
  • the invention is characterized by the jewelry article comprising a main body of metal with a number of mounting spaces for the mounting of additions, such a gems or the like, as well as covers for covering the mounting spaces that are not in use.

  • Fig. 1 illustrates an alliance ring prepared according to prior art and method, with a small number of mounted gems 1, 2, 3 as well as spaces 4, 5, 6 where there is room for adding gems at a later stage.
  • a later addition must be carried out by a craftsman with a burin.
  • the ring in the drawing was delivered with only one gem.
  • two additional gems were added, and the result is clearly a somewhat irregular setting.
  • the present invention is based on the fact that a jewelry article is obtained, for example a necklace, a broche, a ring or a bracelet, where mounting spaces have been prepared in advance, for example openings for the mounting of additions such as gems, in a number for which there is room or that may possibly be required in the future.
  • the openings which also can exist in the form of indentations, have a circular cross-section, or they might have other geometrical shapes, such as quadrangular, rectangular, trapezoid or hexagonal, or also generally polygonal if the customer requires a special adaptation to specific gem types or rubbings.
  • indentations/openings are possible, for instance pins protruding from the surface of the ring or a combination of an indentation with one or several pins in it, for instance a pin in the bottom of the indentation.
  • the jewelry article can be manufactured using modern techniques providing high precision and precisely identical mounting spaces.
  • Relevant material for the preparation may for example be gold, platinum, silver, steel, nickel, titanium, tin, brass etc., as well as alloys of these materials or the like.
  • Fig. 2 illustrates a main body according to the invention, in this case a ring article 20, with mounting spaces 21-24, in this case exemplified by one gem 25 being mounted, and where there are prick punches 28 in the remaining openings for mounting new gems.
  • a gem or the like When a gem or the like is to be mounted, it is placed in the mounting space, in this case in an opening, so that it rests against the notches 27 in the prick punches. Then, the tip of each prick puncher is bent over the gem in order to lock it in place. This is shown in Fig. 2, with a gem 25 being mounted in its intended mounting space 22.
  • This is a job which can be done by any jeweler. For instance, gems of standard sizes that fit the article 20 can be delivered.
  • the jeweler has a standard article in which he can mount a number of gems, and the customer can choose any number, type and quality he or she desires.
  • the jeweler mounts the gems and places a cover 30 over the unused mounting spaces 21-24.
  • the covers are also produced with high precision so that they fit perfectly into the prefabricated mounting spaces.
  • the ring/bracelet can thus give the appearance of having a smooth and integral surface.
  • the covers will have formations that cooperate with the formations of the notches in the jewelry article, or vice versa.
  • the cover itself can also be furnished with decorative devices, possibly in accordance with formations and other design features of the jewelry article.
  • the covers may for instance also include gems or other articles that can be replaced at a later stage.
  • Jewelry articles, covers and gems can be delivered to the jeweler in standard sets.
  • Fig. 3 illustrates a cover 30 in perspective, with a surface 31 and hooks 32 according to the invention. Hooks 32 are intended to fetch into the corresponding notches of the mounting spaces 21-24.

  • Fig. 5 illustrates an assembled ring with a gem in the opening and covers on the remaining mounting spaces, according to the invention.
  • the covers can for instance be fixed in their places with glue.
  • a possible type of glue may be thermoplastic glue, which is hard at body temperature, but becomes fluid at higher temperatures (but below the melting point for the relevant metal in the jewelry article). Such a temperature can for instance be within the range of 60- 100 0 C.
  • the choice of glue type will be apparent for the person skilled in the art.
  • the term "main body” means a jewelry article, for example a ring or the like, where covers are not mounted.
  • “Jewelry article” refers to the complete product with cover and its devices.
