Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for generating a series of notes of a scale with a finite number of notes on the basis of a name comprising characters, wherein the characters are chosen from a set of characters.
- the present invention provides for this purpose a method of the above stated type, wherein the following steps are performed of: determining a starting point on a scale and assigning a note from the scale to each character of the name on the basis of a predetermined relation between character and note.
- a melody personalized according to the present invention can be used as "signature tune" in the broadest sense, such as a ringtone or ringback tone for a fixed telephone, mobile telephone or combined telephone. It is possible here that only a single ringtone is active in the telephone, so that the personalization relates to the user of this telephone. It is however also possible for the caller to send the ringtone together with the call signal and for the person called to be called with the ringtone in question. The ringtone is here specific to the caller.
- a number of series of characters are in use in the world, which are used for interpersonal communication, and in particular for composing names.
- a number of note systems are also in use in the world in composing, notation and performing of music.
- AU possible combinations of character series and note systems can be used in the present invention. Since use is made in a large part of the world of the alphabet of Arabic letters and of the western, diatonic scale, a preferred embodiment relates to the measure that the set of characters is formed by the western (Arabic) alphabet and that the scale is the western (diatonic) scale.
- rhythm is determined subject to a choice of genre.
- genre can vary from classical, via beat, rock, urban or techno. This is of course a non-limitative list
- the above stated method provides means for generating a melody individualized for a person.
- This method is preferably performed by a computer in some form.
- the invention therefore provides a computer which is adapted to generate a series of notes of a scale with a finite number of notes on the basis of a name comprising characters, wherein the characters are chosen from a set of characters, wherein the subsequent steps of determining a starting point on a scale and assigning a note from the scale to each character of the name are executed on the basis of a predetermined relation between character and note.
- the composing of such a melody requires a short calculation time of a computer, which means that a single computer can compose a personalized melody for many people. This makes it attractive to make use of one or a small number of computers which can compose such a melody for a large number of people. It is therefore attractive to make use of a computer of the above stated type, wherein the computer is situated at a first location and is coupled by means of communication links for the purpose of supplying the name and further data from a second location and for supplying the generated melody to this second location.
- the computer is preferably adapted for connection to the second location with temporary communication links.
- Generating the melody is an economic activity, which entails that in one way or another a payment will have to take place. It is therefore attractive that the computer is adapted to generate a melody only after a proof of payment in some form has been received.
- the computer is preferably configured as net server for the Internet.
- the result hereof is that the melody can be stored on a device which is connected to the Internet, such as a personal computer, but also that it can be stored on devices which are connected to the Internet temporarily, such as PDAs.
- a partial path of the communication link can of course also take place via an optionally wireless telephone network. A coupling between the Internet and the telephone network is assumed here.
- the computer it is however also possible for the computer to be incorporated in a network for digital telephony.
- the communication between computer and device herein takes place via a telephone network.
- Figure 1 is a diagram of an example of a relation table between letters and notes
- Figure 2 is a diagram of the method which forms the basis of the invention.
- FIG. 3 is a diagram of the components in which the present invention is implemented.
- the invention is based on a relation between characters and notes.
- use is made of the western alphabet of 26 letters and the diatonic scale. Both are placed in a series and shown one below the other in figure 1.
- a melody does after all comprises not only a series of notes but also other musical elements such as note length, accents (differences in loudness), timbre (harmonics) and a possible accompaniment These latter two elements determine the genre.
- the mutual relation between the note lengths of the individual notes is then determined on the basis of the nature of the character, such as the difference between capital letters and lowercase letters or the difference between consonants and vowels. It is possible for use to be made here not only of the above stated letter characteristics but also of the choice of genre.
- An accent is here understood to mean a difference in loudness. It is here also the case that use can also be made of the choice of genre to determine the differences in accent.
- the above stated method is preferably performed by a computer using an interactive process, this being preferably preceded by a payment process in some form. This process also preferably takes place via perhaps the same computer.
- a configuration of a computer 1 which is configured as a server and which is connected by means of a network 2 to client 3, i.e. the device onto which the melody must be placed.
- client 3 i.e. the device onto which the melody must be placed.
- This client is formed by a mobile telephone or another portable device which is adapted to play the melody as desired.
- the client will initially have to carry out a payment operation of some kind or have to submit proof of payment.
- the server will then ask for the name and the month of birth of the person for which the melody must be composed.
- the server will, as option, inquire into the genre of music in which the melody must be composed.
- the server composes the melody and sends these data to the client, which stores these data in its memory. After a command is given, the client will play the melody. It is however also possible for the client to send the melody to another device, for instance together with a call in the form of a ringtone for a mobile telephone. The person called can then recognize the person calling from the nature of the ringtone.
