Definitions
- the present invention relates to cooling devices that comprise a controlled atmosphere compartment and a generator that supplies the required gas mixture to this compartment.
- cooling and freezing compartments are formed in order to provide the most suitable conditions required for the storing of different types of food.
- the shelf lives are further prolonged by forming con trolled atmosphere compartments containing the gas mixture determined according to the type of the food such that the activity of the microorganisms which is one of the causes of food deterioration is minimized.
- the meat products oxygen (O2) enriched
- N2 vegetables and fruit nitrogen
- CO2 carbon dioxide
- the gas to be delivered to the controlled atmosphere compartment can be supplied from a variety of sources.
- the required gas (N2) is provided from a tube wherein it is stored previously.
- the temperature of the gas recently delivered to the controlled atmosphere compartment is different from the interior temperature of the compartment. This prolongs the time period in which the gas mixture reaches the desired temperature and humidity conditions. The time spent in achieving the desired temperature and humidity conditions results in reducing the shelf life of the food.
- the aim of the present invention is the realization of a cooling device wherein the temperature of the gas mixture pumped into the controlled atmosphere compartment reaches the desired conditions as fast and as easy as possible.
- the gas mixture extracted by the gas generator to be delivered into the controlled atmosphere compartment is aspirated from within the body of the cooling device.
- the inlet of the gas generator is in fluid communication with the interior the body of the cooling device, and the outlet is in fluid communication with the interior of the controlled atmosphere compartment. Since the air within the body has already been cooled to a certain temperature, the difference between the current temperature of the controlled atmosphere compartment and the temperature of the gas mixture recently delivered from the generator is reduced as much as possible. Accordingly, the gas mixture reaches the desired temperature in a short while after being delivered to the controlled atmosphere compartment.
- the controlled atmosphere compartment is situated just above the vegetable container and the inlet of the generator opens into the vegetable container. Consequently, the possible temperature differences within the body are eliminated and a gas mixture having a temperature as close as possible to the current temperature of the controlled atmosphere compartment is delivered inside.
- Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a cooling device.
- the cooling device (1) comprises:
- [28] - a generator (5) that aspirates air and extracts the required gas mixture to be delivered into the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) from the air.
- the generator (5) comprises:
- the generator (5) comprises a separator (8) in the form of a semi-permeable membrane.
- the separator (8) allows the passage of the gases with a certain molecular size, consequently provides the separation of the desired and the undesired gasses.
- the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is situated inside the body (2).
- the inlet (6) of the generator (5) is attached to the inside of the body (2).
- the outlet (7) of the generator (5) opens into the controlled atmosphere compartment (4).
- the air with a temperature of 3-4°C aspirated from within the body (2) by a pump (not shown in the figures) reaches into the generator (5).
- the desired gases pass to the other side of the separator (8), the undesired gases stay on the side of the inlet (6).
- the gas mixture having the desired content is delivered from the outlet (7) into the controlled atmosphere compartment (4).
- the temperature of the gas mixture entering into the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) does not differ significantly from the temperature of the body (2) and the controlled atmosphere compartment (4). Consequently, the time period for reaching the desired conditions in the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is shorter, and once the conditions are maintained, it is possible to keep these conditions unaltered to a great extent even if gas mixture is continued to be delivered inside. Since the body (2) is not completely insulated from the exterior environment, the aspirated air from within does not create a vacuum.
- the cooling device (1) comprises a vegetable container (9) situated at the bottom portion of the body (2).
- the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is situated just above or below the vegetable container (9). Since the air distribution within the body (2) is not homogeneous in practice, the temperature of the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is closer to the temperature of the vegetable container (9).
- the inlet (6) of the generator (5) opens into the vegetable container (9). Consequently, the temperature difference between the temperature of the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) and the temperature of the gas mixture to be delivered to the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is provided to be lesser by means of aspirating the air from within the vegetable container (9).
- a nitrogen (N2) generator is utilized in the cooling device (1) of the present invention.
- This nitrogen generator (5) separates the air aspirated from the body (2) into two parts by means of the separator (8).
- the first part is comprised of 85-96 % nitrogen, 3-5 % oxygen and 3-10 % carbon dioxide by volume and is delivered to the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) via the outlet (7).
- the remaining part being rich in oxygen, is discharged from the second outlet (7) to the exterior environment.
- the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is positioned just above the vegetable container (9).
- the inlet (6) of the nitrogen generator (5), situated outside of the body (2), is attached to the vegetable container (9).
- the nitrogen- enriched gas outlet (7) of the nitrogen generator (5) extends into the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) and the oxygen-enriched gas outlet (70) extends into the exterior environment.
- the air with a temperature of 3-4°C aspirated from the vegetable container (9) by a pump (not shown in the drawings) reaches into the generator (5).
- the oxygen and carbon gases having very large molecules cannot pass through the separator (8) that has a certain pore size; however, the smaller nitrogen molecules can pass.
- the oxygen-rich mixture stays on the side of the inlet (6).
- the nitrogen-rich mixture is delivered into the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) from the outlet (7). Since the temperature within the generator (5) does not rise much, the temperature of the nitrogen-rich mixture entering the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) is quite close to the temperature of the vegetable container (9) and the controlled atmosphere compartment (4). Accordingly, the temperature conditions of the controlled atmosphere compartment (4) can be preserved.
