Abstract

 1フレーム期間が一定の階調レベルで表わされる入力画像信号に対し、連続するフレーム間で輝度が変化する箇所を検出し、その輝度変化直後のフレーム(変化後フレーム)において、画像表示パネル応答不足の改善のために階調レベルを補正する(オーバーシュート駆動)。階調レベルが補正された信号に基づいて、サブフレーム信号が生成され、画像表示パネルに出力される出力階調レベルが得られる。

[0003] ここで、液晶表示装置における一般的な問題として、動画表示時にお!、て表示輝 度が異なる部分での境界線がぼけて視認されると 、つた動画ボケの問題がある。上 記動画ボケの問題は、非選択期間の画素において前回書き込まれた表示内容が維 持されるホールド表示が行われることに起因しており、液晶表示装置や有機 EL表示 装置等のホールド型表示装置に特有の問題である。すなわち、 CRT (陰極線管)表 示装置やプラズマ表示装置等のインパルス型表示 (発光期間のみ表示がなされる表 示)を行う表示装置では、上記動画ボケの問題は生じない。
[0004] 液晶表示装置における動画ボケを防止する方法として、 1垂直期間(1フレーム)を 複数のサブフレームに時分割し、 1画素に複数回信号書込みを行うことで、擬似的に インパルス型表示に近い表示を行う技術 (擬似インパルス駆動)がある。すなわち、ホ 一ルド型表示装置にぉ 、ても、時分割駆動を行ってサブフレームの少なくとも一つで 低輝度の表示(黒表示に近い表示)を行えば、動画ボケの抑制に効果がある。

[0010] このような応答速度の低さを補うための技術としては、一般にオーバーシュート駆動 が知られている。オーバーシュート駆動とは、入力階調変化の上昇もしくは下降に応 じて所望の階調レベルを与える印加電圧よりも高い電圧やより低い電圧を液晶素子 に対して印加し、液晶素子を強制的に高速駆動させる駆動方法である。このようなォ 一バーシュート駆動は、例えば特許文献 1および 2において開示されている。

[0015] 尚、図 13に示す図は、擬似輪郭の発生原理を説明するために単純化された図とな つているが、実際には図 17に示すように、画像ボケの発生領域で変曲点を有する形 状となることが多い。このような輝度分布においても、変曲点の周囲で輝度変化の小 さい領域となり、その両端で輝度変化が大きくなるため、 2つの輪郭 (本来の輪郭と擬 似輪郭)が観察される。

[0017] 本発明は、上記の問題点に鑑みてなされたものであり、その目的は、液晶素子等の 表示素子における応答速度の遅さと擬似インパルス駆動との組み合わせによって発 生する擬似輪郭を解消できる画像表示装置を実現することにある。
[0018] 本発明に係る画像表示装置は、上記課題を解決するために、入力画像信号の 1フ レーム期間を、複数のサブフレーム期間に時分割して画像表示を行う画像表示装置 において、連続するフレーム間で階調レベルが所定値以上変化する画素に対して、 該画素の応答速度を速める方向に階調レベルを補正する補正手段と、上記補正手 段によって階調レベルの補正が行われた画像信号に基づき、 1フレーム期間内の各 サブフレームの輝度の時間積分値の総和力 上記入力画像信号に基づく 1フレーム 期間内の輝度を再現するように、各サブフレームへ輝度を配分する配分手段とを備 えて 、ることを特徴として!/、る。

発明を実施するための最良の形態
〔実施の形態 1〕
本発明の一実施形態について図面に基づいて説明すると以下の通りである。先ず は、本実施の形態 1に係る画像表示装置の概略構成を、図 2を参照して以下に説明 する。

[0050] 図 1は、表示素子における応答速度の遅さを補うためにオーバーシュート駆動を行 うにあたって、最も簡単な手法による印加電圧設定を示すものである。

[0052] この時、変化後フレームである第 Νフレームでは、入力階調レベルに対応した電圧 を印加すると、表示素子の応答速度が遅いがために、フレーム期間内に所望の輝度 応答レベルに到達しないものとする。このため、応答不足改善用の第 1の階調レベル 変換手段 13によって入力画像信号を補正し、変化後フレームにおける出力階調レ ベルを上げることでオーバーシュート駆動を行う。また、第 1の階調レベル変換手段 1 3における出力階調レベルを上げることで、画像表示パネル 20に対して最終的に送 出される信号の階調レベル、すなわち、データセレクタ 16の出力階調レベルもォー バーシュート駆動によって上げられることとなる。この場合は、第 2サブフレーム、すな わち第 3の階調レベル変換手段 15の出力が入力階調レベルに対応したレベルよりも 上げられている。これにより、画像表示パネル 20において、変化後フレーム終了時に おける輝度応答レベルを静止時の輝度応答レベルと合わせることができる。尚、ここ でいう静止時とは、連続するフレーム間での画素の入力階調レベルに変化が無い (も しくは少ない)状態を指し、図 1の例では、第 N+ 1フレーム以降が静止時の表示状 態といえる。

[0063] また、観察者に見える輝度分布波形を測定によって得るためには、以下のような方 法を用いることができる。すなわち、 2つの入力階調の境界部が動く映像を実際に表 示させて、 CCD (Charge-Coupled Device)のような一定面積内の輝度の時間積分値 の分布を測定できる装置を、上記境界部と並行に移動させる力、もしくは上記境界部 を追うように首を振らせながら、上記境界部付近の輝度を測定する。これにより、ある 一定時間内におけるの 2つの入力階調の境界部とその付近の輝度分布波形を得る ことができる。 [0064] こうして得られる輝度分布波形は、例えば図 17のように 2つの静止時輝度をつなぐ 曲線の中途に変曲点を持つ場合や、図 7のように低階調側の静止輝度より低 、ボイ ントや、高階調側の静止輝度より高いポイントを発生する事がある。変曲点は擬似輪 郭を発生させ、また静止時より低すぎたり高すぎる積分輝度は白光りや黒沈みなどの 画質劣化の原因となる。従って、輝度分布波形の観測結果をフィードバックしながら 、画像表示パネル 20に対して供給する画像信号の階調レベルを調整することによつ て、輝度分布波形上の変曲点や静止時より低すぎたり高すぎる積分輝度が発生しな いような階調レベルを求めることができる。したがって、こうして求まった階調レベルを オーバーシュート駆動時の出力階調レベルとして、第 1の階調レベル変換手段 13の テーブル設定値とすればょ ヽ。
[0065] ここで、第 1の階調レベル変換手段において、全ての入力階調に対する変換階調 値を記憶しておけば、全ての入力階調に対して上述のような階調補正を行う事がで きる。し力しながら全ての入力階調に対する変換階調値を記憶しておく事は階調レべ ル変換手段である ROMの容量が非常に大きくなりコストアップ要因となる。そこで例 えば階調レベル変換手段への入力 bit数を制限して、 V、くつかの代表値における測 定もしくは演算による変換階調値のみを記憶しておく事でコストアップを抑える事が 考えられる。このとき代表値ではな 、階調値の入力に対してどの程度の誤差を許容 するかという問題がある。この許容誤差を図 8に示すように静止時の輝度応答レベル との間に所定のマージン Mを設けて設定することが考えられる。また、図 8の例では、 上記マージン Mは、変化後フレームの終了時 (すなわち変化後フレームにおける最 後のサブフレームの終了時)においてのみ設定されている力 変化後フレームおける 各サブフレーム終了時にマージン Mを設定しても良い。

[0067] 階調変換手段の構成はこの限りではなぐ目標とする輝度到達レベルに対する誤 差範囲の設定によって変更される。目標とする輝度到達レベルに対する誤差範囲に ついては、階調変換手段に対するコストや変換階調値の測定精度などによるが、ここ で、上記マージン Mの設定の目安としては、例えば以下の (1)〜(3)に示すような各種 設定例が考えられる。

(2)輝度上昇時の場合に、画像表示パネルにおける最小輝度レベルと目標輝度 (安 定時)レベルとの差の 15%以内、より好ましくは 5%以内に合わせる。尚、ここでの輝 度上昇時とは、変化前フレームの輝度よりも変化後フレームの輝度が大きくなる場合 をいう。
(3)輝度下降時の場合に、画像表示パネルにおける最大輝度レベルと目標輝度 (安 定時)レベルとの差の 15%以内、より好ましくは 5%以内に合わせる。尚、ここでの輝 度下降時とは、変化前フレームの輝度よりも変化後フレームの輝度が小さくなる場合 をいう。

上記実施の形態 1に係る画像表示装置 1は、画像表示パネル 20の応答不足を補う ためのオーバーシュート駆動を、第 1の階調レベル変換手段 13において行っている 。すなわち、画像表示装置 1では、フレーム全体の表示階調レベルを表している入力 階調信号の段階で、オーバーシュート駆動を行うための階調レベルの補正が行われ ている。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 入力画像信号の 1フレーム期間を、複数のサブフレーム期間に時分割して画像表 示を行う画像表示装置において、
連続するフレーム間で階調レベルが所定値以上変化する画素に対して、該画素の 応答速度を速める方向に階調レベルを補正する補正部と、
上記補正部によって階調レベルの補正が行われた画像信号に基づき、 1フレーム 期間内の各サブフレームの輝度の時間積分値の総和が、上記入力画像信号に基づ く 1フレーム期間内の輝度を再現するように、各サブフレームへ輝度を配分する配分 部とを備えて ヽることを特徴とする画像表示装置。
[2] 入力画像信号の 1フレーム期間を、複数のサブフレーム期間に時分割して画像表 示を行う画像表示装置において、
連続するフレーム間で階調レベルが所定値以上変化する画素に対して階調レベル を補正すると共に、
1フレーム期間内の各サブフレームの輝度の時間積分値の総和力 上記入力画像 信号に基づく 1フレーム期間内の輝度を再現するように、各サブフレームへ輝度を配 分して各サブフレーム信号を生成するサブフレーム信号生成部を備えていることを特 徴とする画像表示装置。
[3] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、階調レベルが変化した後のフ レームの各サブフレーム終了時における輝度力 補正前の階調レベルの静止時に 対応する各サブフレーム終了時の輝度と一致するように階調レベルを補正することを 特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示装置。
[4] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、連続するフレーム間で階調レ ベルが所定値以上変化する上記画素に対して、階調レベルが変化した後のフレーム の各サブフレーム終了時における輝度と、補正前の階調レベルの静止時に対応する 各サブフレーム終了時の目標輝度との差を、画像表示パネルにおける最小輝度レべ ルと最大輝度レベルとの差の 10%以内に合わせるように階調レベルを補正すること を特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示装置。
[5] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、連続するフレーム間で階調レ ベルが所定値以上変化する上記画素に対して、階調レベルが変化した後のフレーム の各サブフレーム終了時における輝度と、補正前の階調レベルの静止時に対応する 各サブフレーム終了時の目標輝度との差を、画像表示パネルにおける最小輝度と最 大輝度との差の 3%以内に合わせるように階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請 求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示装置。
[6] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、連続するフレーム間で階調レ ベルが所定値以上変化する上記画素に対して、変化の前後で輝度が上昇する場合 には、階調レベルが変化した後のフレームの各サブフレーム終了時における輝度と、 補正前の階調レベルの静止時に対応する各サブフレーム終了時の目標輝度との差 を、画像表示パネルにおける最小輝度と上記目標輝度との差の 15%以内に合わせ るように階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示 装置。
[7] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、連続するフレーム間で階調レ ベルが所定値以上変化する上記画素に対して、変化の前後で輝度が上昇する場合 には、階調レベルが変化した後のフレームの各サブフレーム終了時における輝度と、 補正前の階調レベルの静止時に対応する各サブフレーム終了時の目標輝度との差 を、画像表示パネルにおける最小輝度と上記目標輝度との差の 5%以内に合わせる ように階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示装 置。
[8] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、連続するフレーム間で階調レ ベルが所定値以上変化する上記画素に対して、変化の前後で輝度が下降する場合 には、階調レベルが変化した後のフレームの各サブフレーム終了時における輝度と、 補正前の階調レベルの静止時に対応する各サブフレーム終了時の目標輝度との差 を、画像表示パネルにおける最大輝度と上記目標輝度との差の 15%以内に合わせ るように階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示 装置。
[9] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、連続するフレーム間で階調レ ベルが所定値以上変化する上記画素に対して、変化の前後で輝度が下降する場合 には、階調レベルが変化した後のフレームの各サブフレーム終了時における輝度と、 補正前の階調レベルの静止時に対応する各サブフレーム終了時の目標輝度との差 を、画像表示パネルにおける最大輝度と上記目標輝度との差の 5%以内に合わせる ように階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像表示装 置。
[10] 上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、階調レベルが変化した後のフレームの最初のサ ブフレームにおいて階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請求項 2に記載の画像 表示装置。
[11] 上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、階調レベルが変化した後のフレームの最後のサ ブフレームにおいて階調レベルを補正することを特徴とする請求項 2に記載の画像 表示装置。

[16] 上記補正部または上記サブフレーム信号生成部は、画面上で 2つの異なる入力階 調レベルの領域の境界部が動くとき、この境界部と同じ速度で動きこの境界部を含む 一定範囲領域の、 1フレームの整数倍期間での輝度の時間積分量の分布波形にお いて、 一方の入力階調で安定している領域における時間積分量と、他方の入力階調で安 定している領域における時間積分量との間を繋ぐ波形上の中途に変曲点を生じない ように上記階調レベルの補正を行うことを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載の画像 表示装置。

入力階調の低い方で安定している領域における時間積分量よりも低いポイントが発 生しな 、ように上記階調レベルの補正を行うことを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載 の画像表示装置。

入力階調の高い方で安定している領域における時間積分量よりも高いポイントが発 生しな 、ように上記階調レベルの補正を行うことを特徴とする請求項 1または 2に記載 の画像表示装置。
