Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a bi-functional compound lid, usable for any kind of cooking vessel such as saucepans, frying pans and the like, that beyond serving as a conventional lid, which completely closes the vessel, thus working as an anti-evaporation, energy-saving tool, can be advantageously used for concentrating the vessel contents, or frying something, operations which require, if the lid is a conventional one, the uncovering of the vessel.
  • the compound lid of this invention permits the evaporation- concentration-frying of the vessel contents to be carried out without the known, annoying inconvenience of the kitchen stove top soiling, because of material spurting/squirting out of the vessel, while at the same time giving the possibility of moving and/or stirring the vessel contents.
  • the compound lid of the present invention can be made with any of the materials commonly used for manufacturing lids for saucepans, frying pans and the like, such as aluminium, stainless steel, cast-iron, glass, copper or any other suitable material.

  • U.S. patent 4,000,830 discloses a lid provided with a centrally located plate containing a plurality of venting holes passing therethrough.
  • This lid structure has, however, the drawback of not allowing any access to the vessel contents, for moving and stirring it, unless the lid itself is lifted, thus making the goal of keeping the kitchen stove top clean, unattained, it being well known that the maximum of the spurting/squirting takes place when the vessel boiling content is moved/stirred.
  • lids are also known, which are incorrectly named lids, as they have a truncated-cone shape and are open at the top. Beyond being an added-on device to the normal kitchen lid equipment, their placing both in the dishwasher and in the cupboard is difficult, owing to their very bulky shape/size. Furthermore, they cannot have the anti-evaporation, energy-saving function of the conventional lids, when the cooking food does not require the concentration and/or the stirring of the vessel contents.
  • Other well known devices apt to avoid the kitchen stove top soiling, mainly when frying foods, are plastic or metal close-meshed nets, with a handle that makes them look like, by and large, a tennis racket, to be laid on the mouth of vessels. These devices however suffer from the drawback of intercepting only partially the spurts/squirts and to let oil drops trickle, when they are lifted up from the vessel. Description of the Invention
  • the bi-functional compound lid usable for any kind of vessel, object of the present invention, comprises: a) a first component shaped as a conventional lid, whose external rim is fit for adapting to any vessel mouth, such first component having a central opening permitting both the introduction of an utensil for moving/stirring the vessel contents and to let the steam venting off, said opening departing either at the external surface level or a bit lower, at a level of a hollow; b) a rigid or flexible wall, solidly connected, or clipped, to the first component, all along the rim of the central opening and projecting inside the vessel, when the first component is positioned on the vessel; c) a second component, provided with a handle of heat insulating material, shaped in such a way as to close the central opening of the first component, and to give to the whole the appearance, the function and the handiness of a conventional lid; and d) means for movably blocking the second component to the first one.

It is surprising how effective said wall is as a splash guard, and how it totally prevents grease, oil or gravy splattering on the area surrounding the cooking vessel, thus completely avoiding untidy situations.
