発明が解決しょうとする課題
[0013] 近年の光スィッチにおいては、通信分野のみならず光情報処理分野においても、 1 XNだけでなぐ NXNの入出力切り替え機能が求められている。
[0014] 前記したアレイ光導波路型の空間偏向スィッチでは、マトリクススィッチのように導波 路交差を生じず、さらに、チャネル数の増大に伴うサイズの増大も比較的緩やかであ り、今後の実用化が期待される方式ではあるものの、 NXNの入出力切り替え機能が 出来ない、という課題があった。
[0015] したがって、本発明は、このような課題を解決するために為されたのものであり、そ の主たる目的は、チャネル数の増加に対して光学損失およびサイズの増大を抑止可 能とし、 NXNの入出力切り替えが可能な光スィッチを提供すること目的とする。
課題を解決するための手段

本発明に係る光スィッチによれば、複数入力で複数出力の経路切り替えが可能で あり、かつ、入出力光の干渉を生じずに各ポートへの同時切り替えが可能な光スイツ チである。複数ある入力ポートの中である特定の入力ポートから入力された光波は、 このポートに接続されたサブスラブ光導波路を伝播した後に、アレイ光導波路に分波 される。このアレイ光導波路では、近傍に設けられた制御電極により、アレイ状に隣 接する光導波路間でその屈折率に一定の差異をもたせることが可能であり、アレイ光 導波路を伝播した光波の等位相面には、アレイ光導波路の終端であるメインスラブ 光導波路端面で、前記屈折率差に応じた傾きが生じることになる。ある傾きをもった 光波は、メインスラブ光導波路を伝播する過程でメインスラブ光導波路端面に設けら れた特定の出力ポート端に集光し、その出力ポートを介して、光スィッチ外部へ出力 されることになる。また、上記アレイ光導波路の屈折率変化を適当に制御することによ り、メインスラブ光導波路での集光ポイントを変化させることが可能であり、これにより、 出力ポートの切り替えが可能となる。上記の光波行路 (経路)の選択は、複数ポート の行路 (経路)切り替えが同時に行われる場合であっても、特に別段の問題は生じな い。
[0028] また、本発明に係る光スィッチは、石英基板を用いた平面光回路で構成することが 可能であり、アレイ光導波路の屈折率変化に石英の熱光学効果を用いることにより、 石英材料単体で構成することができる。また、前記アレイ光導波路に半導体材料また は強誘電体材料を用いることにより高速の経路切り替えも可能となる。
発明の効果
[0029] 本発明の光スィッチによれば、複数の入力ポートに接続されている複数のサブスラ ブ光導波路が一つの共通のメインスラブ光導波路に接続されて 、ることによって、全 体として、 NXNスィッチの経路切り替えを実現することができる。アレイ光導波路を用 V、た経路切り替えスィッチは、通常 2つのスラブ光導波路間を結ぶアレイ光導波路の 屈折率を制御することにより、出力側のスラブ光導波路を伝播する光波の等位相面 を変化させて、スラブ光導波路端面の集光点を移動させることにより、出力ポートを変 えている。この場合、 1XNの経路切り替えスィッチの構成となり、これらの光スィッチ を N個並べても、 NXNスィッチの構成にはならない。
[0030] また、本発明に係る光スィッチによれば、入力光導波路、サブスラブ光導波路、ァレ ィ光導波路、出力光導波路の各要素を一つの基板上の平面光回路としてモノリシッ ク集積できるので、小型化および実装コストの低減が可能となる。

発明を実施するための最良の形態
次に、本発明の実施の形態について図面を参照して詳細に説明する。図 1は、本 発明の光スィッチの一実施の形態の構成概略を示す模式図である。図 1を参照する と、本発明の一実施の形態に係る光スィッチにおいては、石英基板 18上に、入力導 波路 11とサブスラブ光導波路 12が接続されて 、る。サブスラブ光導波路 12とメイン スラブ光導波路 15との間は、アレイ光導波路 14にて光学的に接続されている(なお 、「サブスラブ光導波路」、「メインスラブ光導波路」は、それぞれ、「サブスラブ導波路 」、「メインスラブ導波路」とも略記される)。そして、アレイ光導波路 14の上部には、楔 型のヒーター制御電極 13が形成されている。また、複数ある全てのサブスラブ光導 波路は、共通のメインスラブ光導波路の一端 19に光学的に接続されている。そして、 メインスラブ光導波路 15の他端 20には、出力光導波路 16が光学的に接続されてい る。本実施例において、メインスラブ光導波路 15の平面形状としては、複数の出力光 導波路 16に接続する側で幅狭とされ (出力光導波路 16の間隔を狭めている)、複数 のアレイ型光導波路 14に接続する側は幅広とされる。図 1に示す例の場合、メインス ラブ光導波路 15の複数のアレイ型光導波路 14に接続する側は弧状に拡げられ、略 扇型の平面形状を有する。メインスラブ光導波路 15の幅狭とされた端面側(中心側) での相隣る出力光導波路 16間の間隔は、幅狭とされたメインスラブ光導波路 15に対 応して相対的に小とされており、複数の出力光導波路 16の 1部又は全ては、メインス ラブ光導波路 15に接続される側力 一旦直線状に延在された後、該直線の延長方 向に対して、所定角度で開くように曲げられ、つづいて、該直線方向と並行に延在さ れて出力ポート 17に導かれており、相隣る出力ポート間の間隔は、メインスラブ光導 波路 15の幅狭とされた端面での相隣る出力光導波路 16間の間隔よりも大とされる。 このように、メインスラブ光導波路 15を略扇型の平面形状とすることで、 NXNの光ス イッチの素子サイズの縮減に貢献する。以下に、この実施の形態の動作'機能につ いて詳細に説明する。

複数の前記サブスラブ導波路の扇型の弧側に、一側が、それぞれ光学的に接続さ れる複数のアレイ光導波路と、
複数の前記アレイ光導波路の他側に、幅広の弧側で光学的に接続され、幅狭の中 心側で、複数の前記出力光導波路に光学的に接続される、相対的に大きな扇型形 状のメインスラブ導波路と、
を備え、
複数の前記アレイ光導波路の各々は、
前記アレイ光導波路の一側と他側間に並設された複数の光導波路と、 複数の前記光導波路の屈折率を制御するための電極と、
を備え、前記電極により、複数の前記光導波路間での屈折率に差異をもたせる制 御が行われ、前記メインスラブ導波路の前記中心側での集光ポイントを可変させるこ とで前記出力光導波路の切替が行われ、複数の前記入力ポートと複数の前記出力 ポート間での NXNスィッチを実現してなる、ことを特徴とする光スィッチ。
